Allegany County Fair honors 4-H members who died in fire

ANGELICA — Five 4-H Club members who died in a house fire in April were honored with their own bench by the Allegany County Fair Board.

Each year the board selects individuals or couples to dedicate the fair to and presents them with specially made wooden benches with the honorees’ names inscribed on them. The benches are then installed on the fairgrounds during fair week and then stored until the next fair.

At the Vesper Service on July 17 to open and bless the week ahead, two benches were dedicated. The first went to retired and past board president Karen Tripp and her husband Glenn.

She was involved with the fair for 30 years, spending 15 years on the board and seven years as president. Earlier this year she moved out of the area.

A surprise came when Board President Harry Hurd took the microphone and said, “This is probably the hardest thing this fair has ever gone through.

Earlier this year we lost five 4-H children all of whom participated in this fair. Now they have a bench that honors

them and will be a memorial to them on the fairgrounds for years to come.”

The 4-H’rs, Mikala Roulo and Krysta Kane and Raymond, Triston and Evan Erway were staying at the Charles and Michele Erway home in Genesee, Pa., on April 11 when the home caught fire early in the morning. The Erways attempted to save the children, who were in the basement of the home, and suffered life-threatening injuries as a result. The children could not escape.

Michele Erway, who was hospitalized in crit-

ical condition for several weeks, and Charles Erway, who was also hospitalized with his injuries, attended the vesper service, clinging to each other as the bench was revealed.

Following the dedication, the Genesee Valley Chorus sang “Let There Be Peace on Earth.”

Allegany County Legislature Chairman Phillip Stockin also presented Tripp with a certificate of appreciation from the legislature.

Good launches, crowds at 2022 Wellsville Balloon Rally

WELLSVILLE — The 45th annual Great Wellsville Balloon Rally is in the record books as being one of the most successful in recent years.

Coming off a morning launch July 17 that saw all but one of the more than two dozen registered balloons take flight, Great Wellsville Balloon Rally chairman Brad Thompson was full of good news.

“We got in four launches for the weekend and the crowd hung in there,” he noted.

Angelica Community Radio presents ‘MxBETH’ ANGELICA — Angelica Community Radio, a non-profit radio station, will present a professional touring production of Shakespeare’s classic play.

sion for many years before becoming part of the executive board and advancing to president, recognized former long-time fair board president Martha Roberts, who was in the audience.

“I learned half of what I know about running the fair from Karen (Tripp) and the other half from Martha,” Hurd said.

Later, the Rev. Fred Francisco gave a sermon on the relationship between God and farmers and an agrarian society.

The Allegany County Fair, which runs through Saturday, is planned each year by the Allegany County Agricultural Society and is classed as an agricultural fair.

The Genesee Valley Chorus brought the service to an end, inviting the audience to sing along to “God Bless America.”

44th Engine Show in Port Allegany PORT ALLEGANY, Pa. — The 44th Annual Engine Show sponsored by the Allegheny Mountain Engine and Implement Association is set for this weekend at the club grounds on Route 155 South.

DEC tracking new threat to beech trees The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is concerned about a new threat to beech trees — beech leaf disease (BLD), found in 35 counties to date — including Cattaraugus and Allegany.

DEC began tracking BLD in 2018 after it was confirmed in Chautauqua County. Fourteen of the counties with BLD were confirmed in 2022, and more are likely to be identified.

“Many American beech trees are already heavily impacted by beech bark disease,

but beech leaf disease appears to be an even bigger threat,” says DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos. “The decline of beech in New York could have far-reaching consequences, including significant changes to the composition of our northern hardwood forests and the loss of a valuable food source for wildlife.”

BLD affects all beech, so the impacts would also be felt in urban forests, where ornamental beech trees, including the popular copper beech cultivar, are widely used for landscaping

Much is still unknown about BLD, including how it spreads, but it can kill mature beech trees in six to 10 years and saplings in as little as two years. There is no known treatment for infected trees, DEC says.

BLD is associated with an invasive microscopic worm Litylenchus crenatae, a nematode that enters and spends the winter in leaf buds, causing damage to leaf tissue on American, European and Asian beech species. DEC says it is unknown whether the nematode causes all of the damage, or if it is in association with another pathogen such as a virus, bacteria or fungus.

BLD was first detected in Ohio in 2012.

DEC is working with the Cornell Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, neighboring states, and New York’s Partnerships for Regional Invasive Species Management (PRISMs) to survey for new infections, track disease progression using longterm monitoring plots, and investigate the nematode’s role in the disease. More information is needed to develop an

DEC’s Forest Health Diagnostic Lab is experiencing a recent surge in requests for BLD diagnosis and treatment options as landowners begin to notice a rapid decline in the health of their beech trees. Most of the reports are from Suffolk and Westchester counties where BLD is widespread. DEC is asking the public to submit reports through

NYimapInvasives if they encounter a beech tree showing signs of BLD, especially for counties where BLD has not yet been confirmed.

The main symptom to look for on beech foliage is darkened striping between the veins, which is best seen when looking up through the canopy. Leaves with severe symptoms can be heavily banded and crinkled, with a thick-

ened leathery texture.

At this time there are no specific recommendations for managing trees that are infected with BLD, however, DEC encourages the public to report potential BLD infections using iMapInvasives to help track the disease while research is ongoing.

However, the night was still alight with many balloons inflating for the Balloon After Glow and entertained by the live music until an expansive fireworks display, which lasted more than half an hour.

“It doesn’t matter how many balloons go up,” Thompson said.

According to past chairs of the event, if one goes up it still counts as a launch, he said, tongue in cheek.

He also explained that although this is the 47th year since the Rally started, the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2020 and ‘21 rallies and in a nod to superstition the 13th Rally was skipped and counted as the 14th.

“There was nothing but positives for this Rally,” Thompson said. “There were no problems that I was informed of. We had a lot of people. We had four new balloonists, several new sponsors and some of our old sponsors stepped up to the next level. It was an absolute success.”

The success also pertained to the annual Main Street Festival on Saturday which saw several new vendors, organizations participating and plenty of entertainment and food.

The crowd was steady from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“I think it was a good event with steady crowds throughout the day. It was good for us,” said Angela Glickstein a board member who staffed a booth for the Thelma Rogers Genealogical and Historical Society/Nathaniel Dike Museum.

She noted that there was a wide variety of people who stopped to take a look at the antiques and photographs of old Wellsville and find out that the Dyke Street museum is open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays.

After two consecutive weekend events in Wellsville, the village is taking a well-earned rest, while the Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce is already planning events for the Fall.

What noisy brakes may be telling you The only noises many drivers ever want to hear coming from their vehicles are the sounds of their favorite songs blasting from their car stereos. But cars sometimes make noises that aren’t nearly as inviting as music.

Noises that seem to pop up when applying the brakes can be especially scary for motorists. No one wants to drive a vehicle with faltering or suspect brakes, so learning to distinguish between the two most common brake noises can be a wise move for drivers.

Grinding brakes

The automotive retailer Pep Boys® notes that grinding noises indicate a serious problem with the braking system.

According to CarsDirect.com, there are two major causes behind the grinding noise made by brakes. If the grinding sound is audible when pressing on the brake pedal, this likely because the rotor disc is

coming into contact with part of the caliper. This typically occurs because the brake pads or rotors are extremely worn down, causing the steel backing of the worn out pad to grind against the

rotor. In such instances, Pep Boys® recommends replacing the brake pads immediately.

If the grinding noise is audible while the vehicle is in motion, debris might be stuck inside the brakes.

Drivers might be able to dislodge this debris by repeatedly moving their cars forward and backward in a safe place,

such as a driveway. If that does not work, have the brakes serviced by a qualified mechanic.

Squealing

Many drivers are familiar with the highpitched squealing sound that comes from their vehicles or those of fellow motorists. That squeal, while certainly not music to the ears, might be a good thing.

That’s because Pep Boys® notes that some brake pads are equipped with small steel clips that serve as wear indicators. When brake pads have worn down, these devices produce a squealing sound to let drivers know it’s time to get new brake pads.

Langworthy says his ‘style’ is biggest difference with Paladino

Two months ago running for Congress was the furthest thing from Nicholas Langworthy’s mind.

Langworthy, a Cattaraugus County native and longtime Erie County Republican Party chairman, had been elected state Republican chairman three years ago and was focused on getting Rep. Lee Zeldin of Long Island elected governor.

Then, former Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning, resigned from the 23rd Congressional District, sparking Rep. Claudia Tenney of Utica to announce she would seek re-election in the Southern Tier instead of Central New York.

As the redistricting process went through the courts, the congressional districts changed and Rep. Chris Jacobs of Orchard Park in Erie County inherited much of the Southern Tier District. Tenney then aimed her sights on what had been much of Jacobs’ old district.

In the wake of mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas, Jacobs said he had decided to support an assault weapons ban in Congress. His Republican support dried up overnight and two weeks later, he dropped out of the race.

Soon afterward, Buffalo developer and former Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino announced he would seek Jacobs’ seat in the November election.

Langworthy, who does not live in the new 23rd District, decided then to run.

NO APOLOGIES

While he is friends with Paladino, Langworthy is familiar with

the controversy that follows him. “No one is going to have to apologize for voting for me,” Langworthy told the Times Herald.

He also has the Conservative Party endorsement, but indicated he would not do anything that would result in splitting the Republican vote in November by running in a three-way race. “I intend to win the primary,” he declared.

The two will face off in the Republican primary for the new 23rd District on Aug. 23, with the winner facing Democrat Max Della

Pia in the November election.

A special election is scheduled for the same day between Della Pia and Republican Joe Sempolinski, the Steuben County Republican chairman and a former aide to Reed.

Langworthy said he has been well-vetted.

“I’ve swung at the biggest bullies,” he said. If they had anything on him, they would have used it against him, he added. He stands for “conservative Republican values.”

He remembers the national stage commanded by congressmen like Amo Houghton, Bill Paxon and Reynolds. The Southern Tier seat has since been like a revolving door, with no one staying long enough for the district to benefit from seniority.

“Based on the relationships I’ve developed, I can be impactful from day one” in Congress, Langworthy said.

TRUMP FRIENDS

Both Langworthy and Paladino consider themselves good friends with former President Donald Trump and both are hoping for his endorsement. “I’d be delighted to have his endorsement, but I’m fully prepared to run on my own merits.”

Paladino ran

Trump’s presidential campaign in New York in 2016, while Langworthy ran for chairman of the New York Republican Party at the former president’s urging.

Langworthy’s message is that he can be an effective representative for the new 23rd District. Much of Southern Erie County is made up of farms and small towns and is very similar to the Southern Tier counties.

“I think the Southern Tier has been left behind,” partly because of its location along the border with Pennsylvania where wages and taxes are lower and there is less regulation of business, Langworthy said. “It is a unique challenge and we need special help.”

The biggest difference between him and Paladino is style, Langworthy said. “There are “no distractions. You are not going to take a bunch of heat for voting for me.”

Langworthy and Paladino are both pro-life.

Langworthy said the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court means “every state will make their own decisions. Nothing is going to change in New York,” he predicted. Gov. Kathy Hochul is spending taxpayer money to help outof-state women have access to abortion services, which he called abortion tourism.

Langworthy’s road to Congress is paved with criticism of President Joe Biden, who he sees as responsible for the current inflation.

“America is going to vote for change” in the mid-terms.” They are also getting hammered on their 401(k)s and the stock market, he added.

No one came up and asked him about the Jan. 6 Select Committee or abortion when he was at a parade last weekend in Wellsville, he said. “They were talking about inflation.”

He was also critical of the state ban on fracking, which he said put production of Marcellus shale gas across the Southern Tier out of reach. Allegany County could use some of the $50,000 and up jobs from fracking that has gone for years across the border in Pennsylvania without environmental catastrophe, he said. As a congressman, he said he’d work with others to change that.

Langworthy said the recent Jan. 6 Select Committee hearings are like “a made for TV movie. It’s a TV production.” He said, “Jan. 6 was an ugly moment.

We can’t undo it. People are not talking about it now.” Instead, he said, they are talking about inflation, gas prices, jobs, a trip to the grocery store. “Joe Biden has been an absolute disaster in his first two years.”

EYEING GOP VICTORY

Republicans, Langworthy said, “will win a massive amount of seats” in the upcoming midterm elections, something he hopes to be part of — starting with a win in the primary.

Asked if he’s in an uphill battle against Paladino — who got a lot of votes in Erie County and the Southern Tier when he ran for governor in 2010 and has pledged $1.5 million to his campaign, Langworthy responds that his campaign just raised $307,000 in 20 days and that his name recognition is pretty high in the district as well.

“We’re going to have everything we need in this race,” he said.

Langworthy, who has just released his first television ad, said that 80% of the district is reached by Buffalo TV stations, with the rest in the Elmira TV market. A portion of the old 23rd District was in

the Rochester and Syracuse TV markets.

About 40% of the Republican enrollment in the new 23rd District is in Erie County, but expect to see Langworthy in the Southern Tier, on TV and radio and in your mailbox. There are fewer than 40 days left before the election.

Langworthy, who grew up in South Dayton, where his mother still resides, and graduated from Pine Valley High School in 1999, lives about 4½ miles outside the new 23rd District boundary, but plans to move into the district if elected.

Neither Langworthy, Paladino or Democrat Max Della Pia live in the new 23rd District, although Della Pia, a retired Air Force colonel from Tioga County, resides in the current 23rd District where he’s running against Sempolinski for the remainder of Reed’s term in a special election also on Aug. 23.

Before lacing up and heading out, three-time World Champion and Paralympic bronze medalist Melissa Stockwell draws from her years of experience training for paratriathlons and her former life as a U.S. Army officer to offer tips for protecting yourself from the elements while getting your sweat on outside.

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

You’ve probably

heard this before, but it bears repeating. Working out means perspiring, which takes moisture from your body, and working out when it’s hot outdoors makes staying hydrated even more important.

“Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink water. Before heading out drink some water then make sure to keep a bottle (or two!) on you for during and after your workout,” says Stockwell. “Staying hydrated helps your body regulate its temperature, keeps your joints lubricated and energy levels up, as well as helps prevent more serious health issues arising from being in the heat.”

2. Pile on the SPF

Even on days when it is cloudy, the skin needs protection from the sun.

“I usually opt for a sweat- or water-resistant sunscreen and wear a hat or clothing made out of sun-protective fabric

to help protect my skin,” advises Stockwell. “Further, instead of exercising mid-day, aim to get your workout in during the morning or evening hours when the sun’s rays aren’t as strong.”

3. Protect your pucker

The delicate skin on the lips is also especially vulnerable to damage from sun exposure, as well as from elements like the wind, heat or cold during any season of the year. 4. Warm up, cool down

“If I am running, my warm-up includes a walk that gradually builds up to a jog. If I am cycling, I’ll slowly cycle around the block a few times to get my muscles and joints ready to go. This helps my body get ready for higher intensity movements.” Stockwell says.

To cool down, incorporate static stretches after a workout to help gradually cool the body and muscles. Stretches like touching your toes or laying on your back and gently bringing your knee to your chest help tired muscles relax, increase flexibility and decrease the risk of injury post-workout.

5. Buddy up

Training outdoors can be hazardous, especially if you’re running, hiking or cycling in an unfamiliar area or on a new path. To stay safer, arrange to exercise with

a friend or two so you are accountable for each other.

“Training with someone else means you know you’ll have a backup in case of the unexpected,” Stockwell adds. “Plus, it’s more

fun - and motivating - to have company!”
