Wellsville’s Texas Hot to be honored with Chamber award

WELLSVILLE — In recognition of its 100th anniversary, Texas Hot will receive the Business of the Year award from the Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce on May 14 at the Wellsville Country Club.

The Chamber’s annual awards were curtailed in 2021, while in 2020 the winners were informed by the Chamber of their distinction.

The 2022 ceremony will mark the first time the event has been held in two years.

Spencer Peavey, who is heading up the ceremony, said that one of the highlights of the night will be a slide show presentation of the member businesses that were able to continue to serve the community during the pandemic.

The format of the awards has been changed — the largest and smallest business categories have given way to the Business of the Year and the Newest Business categories. The Spirit of Wellsville and the Community Award remain.

Now slipping into its fourth generation as a family owned and operated business, Texas Hot was founded in November 1921, when Geek immigrant Jim Rigas opened the business with the help of some partners from Olean. He was joined a little over a month

later by George Raptis, his cousin, as the two formed a partnership and the Olean partners were bought out.

Going with a trend at the time they opened a restaurant that specialized in hot dogs. According to the written history of Texas Hot, “They knew nothing about running a restaurant, or even about cooking,” but with the help of friends who ran such a business in Olean they learned to make chili sauce, pies and other staples on a dinner menu.

Texas Hot opened with four tables and a counter with 12 stools.

In the mid-1920s, they bought imitation marble top tables as well as chairs. In 1937, wooden booths were constructed to replace the tables and chairs, and the booths are still in use today.

In the 1950s the second generation, Gus Rigas and Jim Raptis, took over the running of the business. In 1983, Chris Rigas, the son of Gus, became involved and in 1984, Mike Raptis, the son of Jim, came on board. They are the current co-owners.

Now, the fourth generation of the Rigas and Raptis families have joined the work force: they are James Rigas, Isabelle Raptis, Demetrios Raptis and Gabriel Raptis.

Tim Hortons to be included in new Quicklee’s site in Wellsville

WELLSVILLE — Tim Hortons is coming to Wellsville.

When the new Quicklee’s opens on the Bolivar Road early next year, the site will include a Tim Hortons, says Lou Terragnoli, director of real estate and development for Quicklee’s.

A family-owned business serving Upstate New York since 1995, Quicklee’s is a hybrid convenience store with 26 locations in Western New York.

The latest Quicklee’s will open in the town of Niagara later this year, with the Wellsville site to follow, Terragnoli said.

“The Wellsville facil-

ity will be dramatically smaller than the Travel Plaza in Belvidere,” he said. “It will not serve large trucks with pumps in back and is geared instead to serve the local community. It will only be about 4,200 square feet. The Belmont Travel Plaza is much bigger.”

Terragnoli worked for Tim Hortons before moving to the Quicklee’s team a little over two years ago. He said that he knew that Tim Hortons was looking to expand and had looked at the Wellsville area in the past. When Walmart was in negotiations with the village a few years ago, Tim Hortons was mentioned as one of the ancillary businesses.

Quicklee’s was also

interested in the Wellsville market after opening the Travel Plaza, he said.

“This new facility is a convenience store,” he noted. “We have only two Travel Plazas. As we expand our footprint across Western New York these are the kinds of facilities we are opening. This is a residential facility.”

The Tim Hortons chain was first opened in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario. Since then, it has grown into Canada’s largest national chain in the coffee and fresh baked goods segment, with more than 2,200 stores across Canada and with approximately 160 locations in the United States. The nearest

Tim Hortons to Wellsville is in Allegany.

The new Wellsville site, located across the highway from The Wellsville Plaza in the town of Wellsville, will be 4,200 square feet with a convenience store covering around 3,000 square feet. It will include a drive-thru lane and a pickup window.

There will be 21 parking spaces with four fuel dispensers under a 110foot by 30-foot canopy.

The site will be shared with a Walgreens.

Currently, the site is undergoing an environmental review required buy the state, but Terraagnoli said he is optimistic that construction will start in mid- to late summer.

Makers on Main accepting submission for June 11 exhibition Calling all Makers!

Makers on Main is accepting submissions for its June 11 arts and crafts exhibit on Main Street the Village of Alfred.

The first Makers on Main event was held in 2019 as a celebration of the artists, crafters, growers, farmers, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, authors, students, and entrepreneurs in the Alfred community. People interested in participating in the upcoming exhibit are welcome to join as a demonstrator, seller, or a combination.

Submissions are currently being accepted and will be accepted through June 6. For further information regarding submissions,

contact Anne Cornell at cornella@alfred.edu.

The June 11 show will be held in the Village Bandstand area and the lawn space next to Jordan Hall at the intersection of Main Street and Saxon Drive.

It will be an opportunity for Alfred “makers” to demonstrate their crafts, offer adults and children hands-on experience, and to sell their own arts and crafts. Makers on Main requires that all materials be original

and handcrafted.

Spaces will be assigned on a first come, first served basis and will measure 10’x10’. If you would like a larger space or access to electric service, please make note of this in registering. A registration fee of $15 also is requested.

Fees will be used for the advertising budget to promote the makers in our midst and is a flat registration charge for makers, vendors or both.

the newest businesses in town, The Wellsville General Store, which opened during the pandemic in 2021.

Brad Gena had been living in South Carolina for several years and working in a seafood restaurant. In 2020 he decided along with his wife Rebekah and family to make the move back to Wellsville where his parents Pam and John still live.

He wanted to open a restaurant specializing in Southern-style seafood. He looked around this part of the state until he discovered the former Gee’s Garage on the Andover Road.

It didn’t take long to move in and install the equipment needed to open a small seafood grill and convenience store that specialized in ice cream. It also provided several picnic tables outside for diners.

The restaurant’s popularity grew and in late 2021, after a thriving summer business, they completed renovations for indoor seating.

Along with dining they sometimes also enter-

tain customers with music.

The Wellsville General Store also offers fishing poles and tackle, t-shirts, hats and sweatshirts.

The Spirit of Wellsville Award will go to a well-known member of the local community whose roots run deep.

Brenda Szabo is the director of rehabilitation and heads up many of the wellness programs at Jones Memorial Hospital.

She is also involved in the Genesee River Local Waterfront Revitalization Program, having been responsible for revitalizing the WAG Trail with the help of JMH and developing an under-the-bridge walkway for pedestrians using the Bolivar Road to accesses Riverwalk Plaza. Both projects have benefitted the health and safety of the people of Wellsville.

The Community Award will go to Denis and Joanne White, who have both been active in the community.

Denis is active in the American Legion and has played a key

role in the American Legion Riders motorcycle group, which rides escort in veterans’ burials and does charitable work throughout the year. Last year, he became concerned about the condition of the Johnson Cemetery and spearheaded a drive to clean up and rehabilitate the site. Throughout the spring of 2021 he led a group of volunteers who worked on the cemetery.

Joanne volunteers her time at Hart Comfort House and has worked with the Music on the Lawn committee to provide free summer concerts to Wellsville.

The recipients of the awards are selected through a nomination process and are voted on by the members of the Chamber.

dining & Entertainment Wellsville Arbor Day celebrated at Island Park in Wellsville

Arbor Day, an annual national holiday to celebrate trees was celebrated in Island Park in Wellsville, Friday April 29, by planting an Autumn Blaze Maple tree and listening to poetry presentations by Wellsville students.

The Wellsville Elementary School Fifth grade attended in full force and planted the

young tree with the help of the Wellsville Village Tree Board and the Wellsville Village Public Works Department under sunny blue skies.

Wellsville Mayor Randy Shayler was on hand to speak to the fifth graders and read a proclamation that April 29th is declared as Arbor Day in Wellsville.

Wellsville is an

official Tree City USA, under the auspices of the National Arbor Day Foundation. The celebration marks the 31st annual planting and was attended by Wellsville Tree Board President Susan Duke, in her 19th year on the board, and Wellsville Village Supervisor of Public Works Dean Arnold.

Fifth Grade teachers included Rachel Gunzburger, Stephanie Viglietta, Dan Allen, and Heather Brubaker supervised their students in the presentations of numerous poems including an introduction

by Vanessa Carr, a poem “Trees, Trees, Trees,” by Ayla Long, and Amelia Childs.

4 apps that can make driving safer Technology has changed the world in ways too numerous to count. Many of those changes have made the world a safer place, but a growing dependence on smartphones, particularly when behind the wheel, continues to put the safety of drivers, their passengers, fellow

motorists, and pedestrians in jeopardy.

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that distracted driving was responsible for the deaths of more than 3,100 people in the United States in 2019.

The threat of distracted driving is just as

significant beyond U.S. borders as well. That includes Canada, where estimates from Transport Canada’s National Collision Database indicate 21 percent of the country’s fatal collisions involved distracted drivers.

Though smartphones are not the lone distraction drivers face, they do pose a significant threat. But smartphones also can help drivers be safer behind the wheel.

The following are four

apps that drivers can install on their smartphones that were designed to make modern driving safer.

1. SafeDrive: The SafeDrive app can block all the textual apps in a phone, removing a major threat to drivers’ ability to concentrate behind the wheel. Drivers who utilize SafeDrive can still make phone calls, but

they won’t be able to receive or send messages.

2. LifeSaver: The LifeSaver app runs silently in the background and then wakes up and locks the phone when a driver begins driving. Parents of young drivers should know that the app’s “Family View” feature can enable them to track their children’s driving and even see when kids are behind the wheel so parents won’t contact them. The app also can alert loved ones when drivers

arrive at their destination.

3. TextDrive: This app sends auto response messages to people who try to call or text drivers while they’re behind the wheel. Drivers can reply to messages using voice commands as well.

4. DriveWell: Drivers who want some insight into their driving habits should consider the DriveWell app.

The app is designed to provide drivers with feedback about their driving habits.

Drivers can access trip summaries, details on their maneuvers and even track their speeds.

The basics of panic disorder It’s not uncommon or abnormal for people to approach certain situations with a degree of fear. For example, no one can be faulted for being a little fearful during an initial foray into base jumping.

However, individuals who experience a sudden, unexpected wave

of intense fear may be dealing with panic disorder, which elicits more concern than routine jitters.

What is panic disorder?

Panic disorder is a condition characterized by frequent and unexpected panic attacks. According to

the National Institute of Mental Health, panic attacks are characterized by a sudden wave of fear or discomfort.

Individuals in the midst of a panic attack may feel as though they have lost control, even if there is no clear danger or trigger. Repeated panic attacks is one of the hallmarks of panic disorder, which also can be characterized by significant behaviorial changes, such as avoiding places that

previously triggered attacks. HelpGuide.org, a nonprofit dedicated to mental health, notes that panic disorder also is characterized by persistent anxiety about future attacks.

Does everyone who experiences a panic attack develop panic disorder?

The NIMH notes that a person will not necessarily develop panic disorder if they

HelpGuide.org notes that panic attacks may be a one-time experience, though many people experience repeat episodes triggered by specific situations, such as driving across a bridge or through a tunnel. That’s especially true if those situations have triggered attacks in the past.

What causes panic disorder?

The NIMH reports that researchers continue to study how the brain and body interact in people with panic disorder and the role that stress and environmental factors may play in its development.

Some researchers think that the survival in-

stincts in people with panic disorder may be active too often or too strongly or some combination of the two.

Researchers also note that panic disorder tends to run in families, though no one is certain why some people may develop panic disorder while their close family members don’t.

Stressful events, such

as job loss or the death of a loved one, can trigger panic attacks that can potentially lead to panic disorder.

Panic disorder is treatable, and individuals who feel they are dealing with disorder, or those concerned about a previous panic attack, are urged to speak with a mental health professional.

5 ways to clean your house like a professional (BPT) — As we move into spring and summer, there will be plenty of opportunities to get together with loved ones. Whether it’s a family dinner, a graduation party, holiday or friendly brunch, you may find yourself hosting multiple events during the rest of the year. Now is the time to clean your home, so you’re prepared to host the important events in your life.

Cleaning can be a dreaded chore for many, but it doesn’t have to be. Check out these five tips, and you’ll have a home your friends will think was cleaned by a professional.

1. Designate cleaning zones

To make cleaning easy and manageable, break up your home into cleaning zones and tackle them one at a time. You can define these zones by individual rooms or adjoining spaces. For example, if you have a guest room, you can think of the bedroom and en suite as one zone.

Once you’ve designated these zones, choose one and get to work. Start by decluttering the zone so you can see all surfaces, then break out the cleaning supplies and get to work.

2. Make a cleaning schedule

According to a survey by the American Cleaning Institute (ACI), the average American spends six hours a week cleaning, which increases to seven hours a week if you’re a parent. It can be overwhelming if you leave all that cleaning for one day.

Light cleaning should be done daily, while a deep clean can be done less frequently. To ensure you’re consistently doing both, schedule daily light cleaning of your zones and weekly or biweekly deep cleans.

If you’re using a timer, double or triple the time you would spend light cleaning a zone, so you do a thorough job. If you keep up with frequent light cleaning, you may spend less time during your deep cleaning sessions.

Five Archers reach podium at East Region Championships Five members of the Alfred State College (ASC) archery team reached the podium at the 2022 USA Archery East Region Outdoor Championships at James Madison University (Harrisonburg, VA).

The men’s compound team of Jacob Houseknecht (Candor, NY), Simon Bond (Orchard Park, NY), and Matt Stungis (Neversink, NY) won back-toback elimination matches over James Madison and Penn College of

Technology to win the title.

Individually, Houseknecht secured a bronze medal finish in the men’s compound division while the mixed pins team of Matt Szczepanski (Rochester, NY) and Brianna Fagan (Spencerport, NY) finished second after defeating Liberty University to reach the gold medal match.

Head Coach Greg Sammons was proud of the team’s performance.

New education, life issues support initiative starting in Allegany County BELMONT — A new initiative will enable thousands of streaming videos related to all types of life issues to become available to help provide Allegany County area residents with free education, facilitated support and discussion groups and Bible studies for all ages.

Casey Jones, executive director of Allegany Hope, Inc., said today the organization has acquired a license to use an expansive library of materials and is seeking to identify the greatest interests and needs in order to maximize this opportunity.

Studies and associated materials are expected to be made available online initially, he said, providing more individuals with potential for greater use due to not having to spend time and cost in travel.

Allegany Hope also is seeking to partner with church bodies and other entities to maxi-

mize use of the resources, Jones said.

Non-denominational subject matter includes popular studies by pastors such as Max Lucado, J.D.
