Project Honor recognizes veterans in Allegany County

BOLIVAR — Matt Gaynor’s grandfather was a World War II veteran, who was tight-lipped about his combat experiences ... until his grandson was a senior in high school and tasked with writing a paper about something he was passionate about.

To honor his grandfather and neighbor, Gaynor used his talent as an artist and woodworker to carve their military information onto a wooden plaque.

In recent years, Gaynor started Project Honor to help veterans.

His goal is to recognize 100 veterans.

He said Project Honor is a military appreciation organization that presents custom-made plaques to veterans at special dinners, recognizing the veterans for

their service. He also provides programs about veterans to elementary schools.

“What sets us apart from other programs is that we partner with different organizations to increase awareness of the service of veterans and the problems they face today and visit them in their homes, nursing homes or veteran’s facilities,” Gaynor said.

“If you listen to a veteran, you’ll have a whole new respect for veterans,” he added.

“You don’t learn what

I’ve learned from these veterans in school.”

On his Project Honor Facebook page, Gaynor takes nominations for veterans to receive plaques. He visits the veterans in their homes and interviews them.

“Not being a veteran myself, it is a little harder for me to get the information,” he said. “Most times the family doesn’t even know the background, so I use their discharge papers to get a lot of the information and I work with the county department for veterans. It is

So far, five veterans have been recognized from Friendship, Wellsville and Belmont in March. On May 21 in Bolivar, 10 veterans will be honored at a dinner in which their military biographies will be read, and they will receive plaques. Another 10 will be honored on Armed Services Day. Kio was thrilled and it was decided that he and his son would be returning quickly to Fish Central in Island Park to collect the winnings.

For the half-hour it took the Kios to get back to Wellsville, Lions Club members mused about what it would be like for a 10-year-old to come into such a windfall.

Of course, many mothers present thought it should go into a college fund.

Kayden was about to come into possession of $3,397.

That amount is one of the larger payoffs, according to the Lions,

“He told me that he served in the Army and had fought in Germany,” Gaynor said. “He marched Nazi war criminals to Nuremburg,” referring to post-war trials of Nazi leaders.

“He was an amazing man,” Gaynor said. “He went to Vietnam when he was 17 and when I knew him he needed a liver transplant because of his exposure to Agent Orange. ... That is what he got for doing his

However, the fish with the biggest payout was the “community fish,” which by the end of the Greater Wellsville Trout Derby Sunday had reached a total value of $6,794. At 3 p.m. Sunday the event ended but there was still excitement in the air when the tickets for the community fish were tossed one last time.

In the meantime, the name was looked up in

the registration records and it was learned that the winner was only 10 years old and that he had already caught a $25 fish.

When Don Kio answered the phone, Hand asked if he had a son named Kayden.

When he replied in the positive, Hand told him,

Cuba man retiring as senior DEC wildlife biologist in Region 9 agement activities to improve grouse habitat.

Alfred State College holds 38th annual Honors Convocation Alfred State College (ASC) celebrated the achievements of hundreds of students recently during the 38th annual Honors Convocation. Dr. Craig Clark, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs, presided over the event.

Following welcome remarks from ASC President Dr. Steven Mauro and remarks from Clark, the deans of three schools presented the Dean’s Awards for Academic Excellence.

Heavy Equipment Operations major Kelsey Kellam (Liberty, NY) was the recipient for the School of Applied Technology, Graphic and Media Design major Juliana Elwood (Sewell, NJ) for the School of Architecture, Management & Engineering Technology, and Forensic Science major Collen Farley (Staten Island, NY) for the School of Arts and Sciences.

Nursing student Riley Mucher (Warsaw) was honored with the

Provost’s Award for Academic Excellence and Digital Media & Animation major Megan Delianne (Bayshore, NY) and Architecture Technology Alec Harrigan (Springville, NY) were honored for their Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.

Patricia Fogarty, Chair of the college Council awarded Mercedes Torpey (Cuba, NY) with the Leadership through Civic Engagement Award and Gabriel Cooks (Brooklyn, NY) with the Newman Civic Fellows Award.

Elijah Blumberg, Student Senate President, awarded Dr. Angela Graves with the Student Advocate Award.

Dr. Mauro returned to the stage and presented the annual alumni awards. Joseph Laraiso ’67 received the Distinguished Alumni Award while Madison Szpaicher ’17 received the Outstanding Young Alumni Award.

Emilio Rende retires at the end of this month from the state Department of Environmental Conservation where he is a senior wildlife biologist in the Allegany DEC office.

Rende, who lives in Cuba with his wife Christina, caps a 36-year career with DEC. He coordinated the stewardship and land management and upland game bird programs for DEC Region 9 out of the Allegany office.

Rende began his career at DEC on July 27, 1984, as a fish and wildlife technician.

From 2003-06 he worked as a habitat protection biologist in the DEC Region 6 office in Utica, before returning to his

current position in June of 2006.

As land manager, Rende contributed significantly to habitat management, public access and hunting and trapping opportunities on the 27 wildlife management areas in the region.

He was involved in the acquisition of three new wildlife management areas — Poverty Hill WMA in Cattaraugus County, Genesee River WMA in Allegany County nand Clear Lake WMA in Erie county — as well as the expansion of other areas.

The Erie County Sportsmen’s Federation recently honored Rende for his work as the regional upland game bird biologist. Rende coordinated pheasant stocking, the day-old pheasant chick program and he conducted research on wild turkeys and ruffed grouse, including man-

Alice and her adventures through Wonderland become an allegory for a child facing the nightmare of growing up. It’s a coming of age

story where the dream becomes a nightmare.

Take an expedition into Wonderland and see a fresh look at the horror of the journey to adulthood.

This show features themes of abuse, bullying, drug addiction, alcoholism, narcissism,

peer pressure and selfishness. It is not suitable for young children.

There are some scenes that may be too intense for children under 16.

Rende also conducted a couple of different turkey projects including hen survival

from 2013-16. What they found there was a declining turkey population. As a result of that research, the fall turkey season was reduced to a two-week season to help the species recover.

He also conducted research and helped establish regulations

to help manage pheasants, which have lost a lot of critical habitat in Western New York and across the state.

Rende said he will miss working with other DEC employees and their interactions.

“I’m taking it easy,” he said. “I’m going to

spend some time with the family and do a little more hunting, maybe some fishing.”

He said would often get busy with work during hunting seasons and not always have time to hunt himself.

That changes next month.

Driving habits that could help the planet Driving habits are one area where individuals can alter their daily routines in ways that benefit the planet. These eco-friendly alterations can be instituted each day by individuals who want to do their part to combat climate change.

• Avoid aggressive driving. Aggressive

driving is both a safety risk and a threat to the environment.

According to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, aggressive driving can lower gas mileage in light-duty vehicles by as much as 40 percent in stop-and-go traffic and by as much as 30

percent at highway speeds.

• Avoid idling. Many drivers have long relied on idling to warm up their vehicles on cold mornings. However, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control notes that modern vehicles do not need warming up in temperatures above 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

It’s important that

drivers recognize this, as idling wastes fuel and increases the amount of vehicle exhaust in the air.

Vehicle exhaust increases air pollution and contains pollutants that have been linked to asthma, additional lung diseases and heart disease. A far more effective, and considerably less harmful, way to warm up a vehicle is to do so for 30 seconds and then

drive slowly for the first few minutes.

• Purchase a fuel-efficient vehicle. Drivers looking for their next vehicle can prioritize fuel efficiency if they want their driving habits to have a smaller carbon footprint. The Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency provide information on fuel efficient vehicles, and that information can be accessed at Fueleconomy.gov. In addition, the EPA’s Green Vehicle Guide notes that electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen fuel cell

vehicles, and cleaner burning gasoline vehicles are among the more efficient and less polluting cars and trucks on the market.

• Make fewer trips.

The Fremont Green Challenge reports that more than half of all driving trips in the United States are taken for social, recreational, shopping, or family/ personal errands.

By combining these trips, drivers can greatly reduce their driving miles. Fewer trips conserves fuel and can reduce air pollution.

who were hosting the annual event for the first time in two years due to the coronavirus pandemic. Tickets for the community fish are just $1 each and, other than at the derby, they could be purchased from a Lion or at the Chamber of Commerce.

Like the other fish it is tagged and placed in the river before the derby. The community fish can be caught at anytime during the derby by any registered fishermen. When it is brought to Fish Central for the removal of the tag, nobody knows its worth until the registered number is looked up to determine its value. Its worth is determined by the number of tickets that have been purchased by that time.

The Kios arrived at Fish Central as the Lions were tearing down, at about 4 p.m. Immediately asked what he planned to do with the money, Kayden said he plans to buy a dirt bike.

Lion Al Mosher stepped forward to hand the check to the youth as Kayden’s father and sister, Marissa, lined up in front of the Lions Club logo.

Kayden is the son of Don Kio and Sheila Prouty. It was his first time at the derby and he plans on returning next year. His father has at-

tended previous derbies but has never caught a money fish.

While Kayden took home half the pot on the top fish prize, the other half goes to the Lions’ Club Charities, which benefits the entire community.

According to the Lions Club’s Dean Arnold, who headed up this year’s event, “It was a great success. We didn’t have any problems and the weather has been awesome.”

There were also more sponsorships than in previous years with Bokman of Wellsville and Gildner and Associates each sponsoring $1,000 fish.

“We even had someone come in (Sunday) to sponsor a fish,” Arnold said.

The two fish sponsored by Bokman were caught by Brian Benz and Cody Sebastion, respectively.

Fish tagged at $500 each were caught by Eric Case in memory of Lazlo Szabo, Quentin Case in memory of departed Lions members, Jeff Studer for the employees of Curtiss-Wright and Julia Becker for Curtiss-Wright.

During the derby, 266 of the 450 tagged fish placed in the water were caught for a total payout of more than $20,000.

“In the 33 years I’ve

been around this event that’s the most fish I’ve ever seen caught on the first day,” said Mosher, noting that nearly 200 fish were caught on Saturday.

A Henry .30-30 rifle donated by Gaylord’s Guns and Ammo of Andover was won by Dave Miller of Elmira.

The unofficial number of fishermen in the Derby was around 1,280, making it a great day for the Lions and the fishermen.

Allegany County officials warn COVID rates on the rise

BELMONT — Allegany County health officials have reported higher COVID-19 case counts and positive test return rates seen in months.

According to the New York State Department of Health, the COVID-19 positivity rate in Allegany County is increasing slightly week over week.

The 7-day average for individuals testing positive was 8.2% on April 25, up from 7.7% as of April 21 and 3.9% on April 14.

The percentage is calculated based on laboratory testing, not on at-home test results.

“After seeing the case total decrease for 10 straight weeks from January through March, we are now seeing the total case number increase for the last four weeks,” officials said.

More cases were tallied over this past weekend, bringing the total to date to 10,945.

County health officials reported April 25 that April 22 saw 25 reported cases, April 23 saw nine and 11 were reported April 24.

The Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention reported that transmission in the area still remains relatively low. In 23 counties across the state, CDC officials report high levels of transmission, triggering warnings to wear masks indoors in public and additional precautions for people at high risk for severe illness.

And despite higher case counts, no fatalities have been reported in almost a month from the disease.

The state Department of Health reported 154 deaths to date on April 25 among county residents at state-licensed facilities, while 94 have been reported in the county’s borders at licensed facilities. State officials do not report at-home deaths or in other non-facility settings.

County health officials, who track deaths only within the county’s borders, reported no new deaths in April, with the tally standing at 97.

The decline in deaths mirrors the decline in cases over recent months. State officials reported three deaths among county

residents at licensed facilities in March, five deaths in February, seven deaths in January, and 15 deaths in December.

County health officials recommend: — Residents get tested if they have symptoms. The Allegany County Department of Health offers free rapid testing clinics for COVID-19 every week in Belmont. If you have access to at-home test kits, test early and test often. If you need at-home test kits, call (585) 268-9250.

Those who are feeling ill or may have come in contact with a positive case are encouraged to wear a mask, and those attending large gatherings should consider wearing a mask or testing before and after the event. Individuals who are feeling ill should stay home.

Residents should consider vaccinations and boosters if eligible. To date, 50.2% of county residents have received at least one dose, the lowest rate in the state.

home improvement Easily overlooked safety hazards around the house Accidents happen.

While even the most cautious individuals are not immune to accidents, that doesn’t mean it’s not in everyone’s best interest to do everything they can to reduce their risk of accident and injury, particularly around their own homes.

Homes are often seen as safe havens, but they’re also where many individuals suffer preventable injuries. Data from the National Safety Council indicates that about 14 out of every 100 people suffered preventable injuries in their homes or a community venue in 2020.

A home’s status as a sanctuary can make it easy to overlook various safety risks.

The following are some safety hazards that can be prevented when homeowners make a concerted effort to make their homes as safe as possible.

• Scalding: Scalding injuries pose a significant threat to anyone. Data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission indicates that more than 375,000 scald burn injuries associated with various household appliances and products were treated in emergency rooms between 2013 and 2017. More than one-fifth of those injuries affected children four years old and younger. To

prevent scalding injuries, make sure the temperature on your water heater is set no higher than 120 F. The American Burn Association advises parents to avoid giving children responsibilities above their developmental ability. For example, don’t let children bathe siblings, cook, wash dishes, or use appliances like toasters or microwaves until they’re able to recognize and understand the dangers of scalding and burns.

• Trips and falls: The National Floor Safety Institute indicates that falls account for more than eight million emergency room visits each year. Seniors seem to be especially vulnerable, as the National Institute on Aging indicates 30 percent of individuals age 65 and over will sustain a fall each year, with

10 percent of those falls resulting in serious injury. These injuries are easily avoided by routinely cleaning up to ensure walking paths like hallways and staircases inside the home and exterior walkways are clear of obstructions and debris. Carpeting and throw rugs also can pose a falling/ tripping hazard, so promptly address carpet that is peeling up and utilize nonslip rug pads for throw rugs and floor mats throughout the home.

• Unstable furniture injuries: The CPSC indicates that every year more than 11,000 children suffer injuries that require emergency room visits due to tip-over incidents involving home furnishings like televisions. And kids aren’t the only ones vulnerable to these

injuries, as 56 percent of tip-over-related ER visits involve patients over the age of 18. Mount or anchor all flatscreen televisions in your home to reduce the risk of tip-over injuries. Borrello drafts bill to reimburse SUNY students over COVID mandate ALBANY — State Sen. George Borrello is sponsoring legislation to reimburse State University of New York and City University of New York students forced to abandon their studies by SUNY’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

On Aug. 23, SUNY announced that all students must have proof of vaccination to remain

enrolled. Students were given 35 days, until Sept. 27, to comply or submit vaccination exemption requests based on medical or religious grounds.

“More than 1,500 students were forced out of SUNY schools, disenrolled because they were unable to comply with SUNY’s vaccine mandate,” Borrello said. “Many

of these students had applied for medical or religious exemptions.

It’s unconscionable that SUNY would keep their money after kicking them out of school.”

Borrello’s legislation would amend Section 1 of State Education Law to allow reimbursement for SUNY students attending an institution of higher learning, who were disenrolled

due to the COVID vaccination status for any cost of enrollment and for any term they were disenrolled from.

SUNY received 8,134 vaccine exemption requests, 7,048 religious and 1,086 medical.

According to SUNY, 74.5% were approved and 1,516 students were disenrolled for failure to comply with the mandate or gain exemption.

“I support the vaccine as a personal choice. If SUNY wishes to restrict this low-risk group then they should refund all fees and expenses,” Borrello said.

“This was a disproportionate, severe sanction SUNY handed down to these students.”

While private colleges and universities in New York also instituted vaccine

requirements, they were announced earlier or gave students more time to comply. Borrello pointed out, for Barnard College, the announcement was made on April 19, 2021, and the vaccine requirement did not go into effect until the fall semester. NYU and Columbia University also announced vaccine mandates on the same day.
