2022 Greater Wellsville Trout Derby catching interest

WELLSVILLE — The cold Genesee River will be teeming with trout and people when the Lions Club hosts its 32nd Annual Greater Wellsville Trout Derby April 23-24.

This is the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019 the club will host this popular event, which sees more than 1,000 people cast their lines in the hopes of hooking a “money” fish.

Fish Central is set up in Island Park.

Leading up to the event, the Lions Club, which uses proceeds from the event for charitable services to the village, stocks the river with 450 tagged trout worth up to $25,000 in prize money. Prizes range anywhere from $25 to more than a $1,000 — with the stipulation that the fish must be alive when presented at Fish Central.

This year’s trout will come from the Whispering Pines Fish Farm. The mostly rainbow trout will average between 10 and 14 inches.

There are some small changes in the event this year.

There is no online registration. Participants may sign up in person at the Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce on Main Street in Wellsville. Registration forms on the Lions Club Charities Facebook page may be printed and mailed to

the address provided.

Fisher folk can also sign up on site at any time during the event.

The cost is $20.

The other big change is the time. This year’s event will end at 3 p.m.

April 24. Fisherman will hit the banks at 6 a.m. that Saturday and fish until 7 p.m. The event is from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. that Sunday.

But everyone’s favorite things are still part of the Derby, said Dean Arnold, who is heading up he event for the club.

There will still be food available, starting at noon Friday when Fish Central opens. Breakfast, burgers and hot dogs are on the menu.

In the Fish Central tent there will also be raffles and memorabilia for sale. Saturday’s chicken barbecue will start serving at 1 p.m.

Members of the Elks Club are doing the cooking. Tickets cost $15.

There will also be vendors for gear.

Camping in Island Park during the derby is also still free for Derby participants and their families.

“We only ask that fires be in pits or rings,” Arnold said, adding that unlike years in the beginning of the event the Derby has become a family affair.

“We see a lot of grandparents and their grandkids out here now,” he said.

Everyone, whether casting a line or not, gets a chance to catch a

money fish. Tickets for the popular Community Fish are on sale now at the Chamber, the town office or from any member of the Lions Club.

The cost is $1.

The money raised through ticket sales often reaches into the thousands of dollars.

Winnings are divided between the ticket holder and the club. The ticket is drawn when the Community Fish is caught. If it is not caught a ticket is drawn at the end of the event.

Arnold says that signups are going well for the event, which drew 1,200 in 2019, and the sale of sponsored fish is going well.

“I think people are looking forward to getting out and enjoying themselves after the lockdown of the pandemic,” he said.

Despite items they favor, Giglio, Borrello disappointed in NY budget

Assemblyman Joseph Giglio and Sen. George Borrello both found things they liked in the $220 billion state budget bills passed on Friday and Saturday, but overall they expressed disappointment.

“The enacted budget does contain some positive things, including cost-of-living increases

for human services workers, funding for career and technical education, infrastructure investments and a pause on the gas tax, which will help our citizens,” said Giglio, a Gowanda Republican.

Neither Republican cited the record gains in state education aid contained in the budget that adds nearly $20 million to school

budgets in Cattaraugus and Allegany counties in their analysis.

“There were areas of agreement where it was clear that the advocacy of myself and my Republican colleagues had an impact, most notably on a provision to finally repeal the fiber optic tax, which has been the No. 1 obstacle to greater broadband access in our rural area,” said

Borrello, a Chautauqua County Republican.

“Other crucial budget investments that I support are the acceleration of the middle-class income tax cuts, a step I proposed through legislation,” Borrello said.

3 brothers, 2 visitors died in Genesee fire

GENESEE, Pa. — Three brothers, ages 14 to 17, and two visitors, both 16, died in a fire early April 11 that engulfed a Genesee Township home in Potter County.

County Coroner Kevin Dusenbury identified the three brothers as Raymond, 17, Tristan, 16, and Evan Erway, 14 — the three boys attended Northern Potter High School in Ulysses.

The two girls who perished were Mikalah

Roulo, a sophomore at Wellsville (N.Y.) High School, and Krysta Kane, a sophomore at Scio (N.Y.) Central School.

The parents of the boys, Michelle and Charles Erway, were flown to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester early Monday after they escaped the fire.

State police, after an investigation of the fire damage, said a possible issue with a wood stove or its chimney could have been the cause. It was determined the fire started in the basement

Wang earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Harbin Engineering University (China) in 1987 and an M.S. degree in physics from Hangzhou University (China) in 1981.

He came to the United States in 1982 to continue his studies, earning a doctorate degree in physics from the University at Buffalo in 1987. He was appointed assistant professor of electrical engineering at Alfred University in 1988 and in 1993 became associate professor. He was named a professor of electrical engineering in 1997.

SCHOOL DISTRICT RESPONSES

At Northern Potter, Superintendent Nathan Jones posted a letter on the district website expressing “profound sadness” about the tragedy.

“The loss of students is a difficult and challenging situation that can generate a high level of anxiety and distress among our students and staff,” Jones wrote.

“During this time, as a school community processes this tragic news and copes with grief, the district will continue to offer counseling and bereavement support services to all of our students and staff.”

Roulo and Kane were friends of the family staying with the Erways.

Both Wellsville and Scio districts had this week off from school for spring break.

A statement from the Scio district said, “The Scio Central Community is deeply saddened by the loss of Krysta and our hearts go out to all the families affected by this tragedy.”

The Wellsville district released a statement on their parent network that officials had been notified of Roulo’s death.

Superintendent David Foster said when stu-

dents return from spring break, the school’s guidance department will be mobilized to meet with them.

COMMUNITY OUTPOURING

Meanwhile, three fundraisers through GoFundMe have been started for the Eways and the families of Roulo and Kane.

The fundraiser “Please help Charlie and Michele Erway” on gofundme.com had raised nearly $35,000 from about 450 donations by the afternoon of April 12.

“I know a member of the family, and at least helping out with the financial part of this hideous nightmare is something I can do,” posted one person who donated $500. “I send them prayers and sincere hope for comfort and healing.”

“Sending love and prayers to everyone impacted by this tragedy. So many hearts are broken,” posted another person who donated $200. “May everyone be surrounded in love, comfort and care to get through.”

Family friend Rene Smith, who created the fundraiser, said the Erways had been involved with the Allegany County Fair 4-H and Potter County Fair. She said they were known for their Me and My Boys Goat Milk products.

The fundraiser for Kane named “Sudden loss” had raised nearly $5,000 by Tuesday afternoon. A post from her aunt, Melissa Stocking, who organized the fundraiser, said her

family is going to need all the help and support they can get through this horrible time.

“Krysta was so in love with Ray Erway, another child lost in the fire, and he loved her as much,” Stocking said.

“The only grace that we can come to terms with this is that they were together.”

The fundraiser for Roulo named “Please support the family of Mikalah Roulo” had raised nearly $8,000 by Tuesday afternoon. The fundraiser’s organizer, Kim Clark, said she created it to offer support to Roulo’s family to help ease the financial aspect of such a heartbreaking loss.”

The exhibit, prepared entirely by GCC students, is titled Illusion and will be on display

Signs of engine trouble Without a functioning engine, a car is just an expensive driveway ornament. Engines keep vehicles moving, much in the same way the heart provides oxygen and blood to keep the human body running strong.

Modern engines are a mixture of mechanical moveable parts and complex computerized systems. Many different parts work in unison to keep a vehicle moving.

Engines can be challenging for experienced mechanics, not to men-

tion downright confusing for people who are unfamiliar with what’s under the hood of their vehicle. But any vehicle owner can learn to recognize certain signs that an engine may be on its last legs.

Engine shaking

An engine that is shaking while running may just have bad spark plugs or loose or damaged hoses, offers Sturtevant Used Auto Parts in Wisconsin.

However, if those fixes don’t work, it could be an indication of a deeper

problem that requires a mechanic, such as fuel intake system issues, compromised motor mounts or timing belt problems.

Excessive smoke

An engine in trouble typically has to work harder. That results in heating up more quickly, which can lead to overheating. Smoke may be white, blue or black (each color indicates a separate problem). Any sign of excessive smoke is a reason to consult a mechanic.

Warning lights

The dashboard tends to light up when the car is started, and one by one those lights diminish as the car’s computer checks that all systems

are working correctly.

If the “check engine” light remains on, it is notifying the driver of a problem. The issue could be a faulty sensor or something more ominous. Mechanics can hook the vehicle up to a scanning tool that runs diagnostics to “speak” to the car’s computer helping to diagnose the issue, advises How Stuff Works.

Strange noises

Popping or tapping noises may suggest that gasoline is igniting prematurely in the combustion chambers of the cylinders. Grinding noises may tell you that the starter motor needs to be changed or replaced. Transmission

issues also can produce grinding sounds. Generally speaking, if the car is making sounds it does not normally make, schedule a service appointment.

Poor fuel efficiency

Engine trouble may cause the car or truck to consume gas faster than normal, according to the car information site Carsoid. The engine or one of its components may be faulty. Problems could arise in the spark plugs, oxygen sensor or fuel injector.

Metal flakes

If you change your own oil, check to see if

the oil has metal flakes, or ask the technician if he or she sees flakes when you bring it in for service. Flakes indicate the engine is creating too much friction and slowly chipping away at the components.

Trouble starting

Failure to turn over is a clear indicator of engine troubles. It could be the battery, but if the battery is new, look for other causes.

Engine trouble does not generally come out of nowhere. Certain signs can warn drivers their vehicles need servicing.

In his budget analysis, Giglio said, “We entered the 2022-23 state budget negotiations with high hopes for a fair and transparent budget process with a real opportunity to restore law and order and the faith people have in our government. Unfortunately, that did not happen, and New Yorkers were handed a bloated spending plan filled with policy items that should have been handled legislatively.”

Giglio said, “Despite my conference’s proposals, we left with a modified bail reform law that does little more to protect public safety than its previous incarnation. Hopes for installing an independent ethics agency were also extinguished, as the new ‘Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government’ is hardly an improvement over JCOPE. At the end of the day, this new commission still tasks political appointees with investigating the officials that appointed them.”

This year’s “flawed” budget process illustrates that nothing has changed in Albany, Giglio said.

“Budget bills were presented late and printed with no chance for stakeholders to review or provide input prior to a vote and passage,” he said. “I couldn’t be more disappointed that the budget process was a step backward, instead of forward.”

The state is “flush with cash,” courtesy of the federal government’s pandemic relief funds and higher than expected revenues, Borrello said, and one party controls all three branches of government.

He complained the supermajorities in the Assembly and Senate were unable to agree on an on-time budget and the level of spending is unsustainable.

“While there are positive items in the spending plan that will help struggling middle-class taxpayers, which I supported, there are also a host of missed opportunities to truly change some of the most serious problems facing our state,” he said.

Borrello called the failure to restore judicial discretion in setting bail “the most glaring omission” and the one that polls indicate New Yorkers wanted.

“Despite rhetoric by the governor and legislative leaders that the bail changes aren’t responsible for the double-digit

increases in crime we are seeing, no one — especially the public — has been fooled by those claims,” the senator said. “Once again, the protection and rights of criminals have come before those of law-abiding New Yorkers, which is shameful and disheartening.”

Borrello said small businesses bore the brunt of the economic fallout from the pandemic, which is why he continued to push for more assistance to aid in their recovery. He said the budget will offer some targeted tax cuts for small business, tax credits for COVID capital costs and, for restaurants, a “return to work” tax credit that will help

support their efforts to hire more staff.

Restaurants will also be able to bring back alcohol-to-go, which he said for many was a lifeline during the pandemic.

“These tax cuts and credits are the strongest steps we can take to jump start our economy and make our state more affordable for New Yorkers,” Borrello said.

“That is why I voted ‘yes’ on this section of the budget.”

But, “despite the advocacy that led to some significant victories,” he added, “this budget does not give New Yorkers the relief they need and the restoration of public safety they deserve.”

The competition, titled “AHA” because it involved students from Allegany County’s three institutions of higher education—Alfred University, Houghton College Alfred State College, and—was based on solving problems faced by businesses, with a goal of promoting sustainability through entrepreneurship.

by Alfred University and its Center for Advanced Ceramic Technology (CACT) and was organized by IncubatorWorks of Alfred, a state-of-the-art incubator offering services and facilities to foster growth of entrepreneurial businesses in ceramics, glass, advanced materials, and related technology-based industries.

Teams presented ideas for promoting sustainability in business, with the winning plans determined by a panel of judges made up of Alison Wolfe, professor of marketing at Elmira College; Casey Joyce, president and CEO of

Signs of electrical problems in a home Homeowners know that all sorts of issues can affect a home.

Electrical issues fall into the latter category, posing a significant safety hazard if left unchecked.

According to the home safety experts at UL (formerly known as Underwriters Laboratories), learning to recognize warning signs of electrical wiring issues can greatly lower the risk of house fires. House fires pose a significant threat, as the Electrical Safety Foundation International notes that electrical malfunctions cause more than 50,000 house fires each year.

UL indicates that the majority of those house fires can be prevented, and learning to recognize signs of a electrical problems in a home is a key component of home fire prevention.

• Dimming or flickering lights: The UL notes that light fixtures do not typically draw a substantial amount of power, so dimming or flickering lights is not often indicative of an issue with a fixture.

Dimming or flickering lights could indicate that the circuit the lights are on is overburdened, most likely by large appliances sharing the circuit with the lights.

If dimming and flickering lights are a problem, homeowners can speak to an electrician about moving the fixtures to another circuit or installing a new line specifically for major appliances.

• Odors: Odor emanating from an outlet, fuse box or breaker panel should be reported to an electrician immediately. The odor, which some homeowners indicate smells like fish, could be a result of an overheated circuit. Odor coming from an outlet, fuse box or breaker panel could indicate a significant electrical issue, so homeowners should not hesitate to report this problem to an electrician. Odors can sometimes travel through HVAC systems as well, so homeowners should take note and call

an electrician even if their outlets do not smell.

• Hot outlets/switch plates: Outlets and/ or switch plates that are hot to the touch are another indicator of an electrical issue. UL notes that outlets that become hot even when nothing is plugged into them could be wired incorrectly.

In such instances, an electrician will need to fix the issue, and in the meantime it may be best for homeowners to flip the breaker or remove the fuse for the outlet.

• Frequently blown fuses or tripped breakers: According to UL, circuit breakers and fuses have a built-in fail-safe that is designed to prevent overloading. Sometimes a tripped breaker is a result of an aging appliance. One way

to detect that is to plug in the product to more than one outlet in the house.

If each breaker trips, then the appliance is likely to blame.

However, if using the same outlet continues to trip the breaker regardless of what’s plugged into it, then the circuit requires the attention of an electrician.

Electrical issues increase the risk for home fires. Fortunately, such issues are generally preventable and often easily remedied by a qualified electrician.

How to overcome mental fatigue Fatigue and exhaustion are often discussed in terms that characterize the physical effects that they have on the body. However, mental fatigue can be just as draining as physical exhaustion, even if its symptoms are not as evident as achy muscles or tired feet.

The online medical resource WebMD notes that mental fatigue typically arises when individuals focus on mentally challenging tasks for extended periods of time. Many individuals also experienced mental fatigue during the pandemic. Pandemic-related restrictions forced individuals across the globe to confront a number of unforeseen,

unexpected challenges, including a sudden shift to remote work and school closures that forced working parents to juggle the rigors of their careers with the difficulties of remote learning. That upheaval contributed to prolonged mental fatigue for many individuals.

Much like athletes need routine breaks from exercise to let their muscles recover, individuals need to look for ways to give their overworked minds a chance to recuperate from fatigue. Each person is different, but these strategies can help people overcome mental fatigue.
