Did you know?

In 2012, the U.S. Department of the Treasury studied the effect that getting stuck in traffic has on fuel consumption. Researchers discovered that Americans were wasting 1.9 billion gallons of gas each year due to congested roads and inadequate transportation infrastructure. Although that study was conducted in 2012, it’s reasonable to conclude that wasted fuel remains a big and potentially dangerous issue. One way to cut down on the environmental and financial toll of traffic is to find different routes that help drivers avoid traffic jams. Even if such routes are more circuitous, they may end up helping commuters save time and money in the long run. Popular GPSbased traffic apps can guide drivers to less congested roadways by allowing users to set filters to avoid traffic. CATTARAUGUS COUNTY

Transfer agreement reached between JCC and SBU

A new transfer agreement has been finalized between Jamestown Community College and St. Bonaventure University for their nursing programs. The agreement guarantees admission, with full junior standing and the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing with four semesters at St. Bonaventure, to students who graduate from JCC with an

Preparations for Gowanda Fall Fest shaping up for 2019

While we are still enjoying the Summer season, it’s already time to start making plans for the upcoming Gowanda Harvest Heritage Fall Festival, FallFest for short. In 2019, this anticipated local event will have even more in store for everyone to enjoy. Gowanda FallFest is traditionally the last Saturday in September, which in 2019 falls on the 28th. Again this year that will coincide with Homecoming at Gowanda High School. So, Spirit Week activities will also be reflected on the FallFest Schedule. On Wednesday, September 25, things start off with a 152nd Anniversary Celebration of the Pine Hill Cemetery to be held at the Gowanda Hollywood Theater. This event features live music, a meal by Chiavetta’s and a

cash wine&beer bar. Pre-sale only ticket at Heaven Scent, Gowanda Antiques or McCormack’s Hardware in Gowanda or from Jill/David Smith at 353-5811. Again in 2019, FallFest will feature the annual scarecrow contest. At this writing, the annual Spirit Parade had not been officially scheduled, but is expected at it’s usual Thursday evening time slot. The scarecrow contest is anticipated to begin along with the parade on Thursday the 26th. Also that Thursday, there will be a fundraiser for the Gowanda Free Library beginning around 3:00 PM. Hotdogs and other food offerings will be served in front of the library. As always, the busiest day of FallFest will be that Saturday with a full schedule of activities. From 11:00

AM to 4:00 PM, the Gowanda Area Chamber of Commerce will again host a Craft Show and Car Show at the Gowanda American Legion Post #409. Music will be provided by Band of Brother and food will be served. Contact for these events is Melinda Spire 716983-1350 or melindaspire@gmail.com. The NY&LE Railroad will be offering 2 train rides that Saturday. At 1:00 PM there will be a Fall Foliage ride lasting approximately two hours. The cost is $18 for ages 13 and up or $12.00 for ages 4-12. Under 4 are admitted free of charge. Later, from 6:00-8:00, they are offering a Woodbury Winery Wine Tasting train ride. Tickets are $30.00. Information on the train rides is available from Becky at Grudzien Agency,

716-241-7165. The High School will be holding the annual high school Homecoming Dance that Saturday evening with the Coronation Ceremony before. While the students are at the dance at the school, the Gowanda Moose Lodge will be holding a Round & Square Dance featuring Paul Zittel. The dance will also have food, beverages, a basket raffle & 50/50. Additional events and details are still coming in. Any Gowanda area business or organization that still wants to get an event on the FallFest schedule should call FallFest coordinator, Bill Peglowski, with that information at 716-532-9178. As more details they will be posted in the 2019 FallFest section on GowandaOnline at: https://gowanda-ny. com/fallfest/2019

It’s a nearly-scientific fact that you can solve most any problem by putting dirt on it. Scraped knee? Dirt. Embarrassing bald spot? Dirt. Nagging mother-in-law? Dirt. Lots of it. Juuust kidding. The point is, when people need a little more excitement in life, they probably just need to add a little dirt. And that’s where KIOTI tractors come in. Intuitively designed to dominate the dirt, these machines make it an easy decision for anyone also inclined to favor the filthy.

Leon holds annual Town Picnic

Photo submitted The town of Leon recently held its annual community picnic, which included historical displays featuring a framed collection of ribbons from past Leon Town Picnics that dated back to 1920.

LEON — In 1904, the first Leon Town Picnic was organized, and 115 years later it is still thriving. Although the rain may have put a damper on the number in attendance, it did not dampen the spirits of the 60 individuals who did brave the elements. The dedication of the new signage by the Leon Historical Society, honoring the military from Leon going back as far as the Civil War, was rescheduled for a future date. However, the society did have a number of historical memorabilia available

for viewing. A highlight of the displays was a framed collection of ribbons from past Leon Town Picnics that dated back to 1920. This wonderful collection was donated by Karen Belt. Fred Milliman

was present with information and historical facts and displays with regard to the Penny Royal Racetrack. Fire equipment and vehicles were made available for inspection by Leon residents.

The day included a picnic lunch, Chinese Auction, 50/50s, door prizes and old fashioned games enjoyed by young and old alike. As in the first picnic in 1904, residents renewed old friendships and formed new acquaintances. Among some of the original picnic sites were Frank Cooper’s on the Flatiron Road, Delmar Cooper's grove on the south side of Cherry Creek Hill and Franklin grove on the north side of Cherry Creek Hill. Helen Brand Cunningham, a teacher in the public school system, was the secretary of the Leon Picnic Association and was said to be the life of

that institution. Her goal was to have one day a year when all would “lay down the burdens of the day and assemble in some pleasant spot for a day of recreation and pleasure in which residents were invited to participate in and return to the scenes of their childhood, or scenes of active life,

renew old friendships and form new acquaintances.” The annual picnic is sponsored the Leon Fire Commissioners with support provided by the Leon Fire Department, the Leon Fire Auxiliary, the Leon Town Board and the Leon Historical Society. The picnic is held the third Satur-

Honor America on Patriot Day

Catt. Co. Pennysaver - For Reader Ads Call 945-1500

September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crash-landed. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families. • Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food

or supplies to local firehouses and police stations. • Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m. • Engage in service projects that

Page 11

September 5, 2019

can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. • Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September

11 Memorial & Museum. • If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. • Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001. • Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs. • Attend a special service commemorating 9-11 at houses of worship. • Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home. This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11. Editor’s Note: The Patriot Day celebrated on September 11 is a separate holiday from Patriot’s Day, which is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts.

Home brewing mistakes to avoid

Every batch of homemade beer does not turn out perfect, particularly for novices getting their feet wet as brewers. There may be some blips along the way, but important lessons can be learned through trial and error while honing the craft of brewing. Brewing beer dates back thousands of years. Residue on pottery dating from around 5,000 years ago shows beer was brewed using barley and other grains in China. There’s also a 3,900-year-old Sumerian poem honoring Ninkasi, the patron goddess of brewing,

that contains the oldest surviving beer recipe. Brewers can learn a thing or two from the people who have brewed before them. The following are some mistakes to avoid. • Not pitching enough yeast: Yeast feeds on the sugars in the grain and fires up the fermenting process. Home Brew Supply says that failing to pitch enough yeast can stress the yeast, result in longer lag times, create more esters, and even stall fermentation. Pitch rate calculators can help brewers figure

out how much yeast to use. • Failure to sanitize properly: Experienced brewers understand that outside contaminants (like wild yeast) or other microorgan-

isms can greatly affect a batch. Sterilization is essential for anything that comes in contact with the wort and beer. • Low-quality water: Water sets the stage for the flavor of the beer. Using water straight from the tap may be adequate, but if the water has a lot of minerals or an offtaste, it can adversely affect the finished product. Using filtered water may be a better bet, according to Kegerator.com. • Improper measuring: All dry ingredients need to be measured

by weight and not volume, says the brewing resource Brew Cabin. Just like baking, brewing beer requires careful attention to how much of each ingredient is added to a recipe. • Old ingredients: Beer requires fresh ingredients, including hops and yeast; otherwise, the result may be skunky beer. • Temperature: Excessive temperature can increase alcohol content and oversweeten brews. Using thermometers and monitoring temperature throughout the

process are good habits. • Going big too soon: It can be exciting to brew beer and set high expectations. However, beginners should choose an easy recipe and start with a small batch. When the brew process becomes rote, then it’s possible to experiment with flavors and increase output. Learning to brew beer may involve some hiccups, but home brewers can take away a thing or two from those who have mastered the craft.
