Forest Service extends Resource Advisory Council Application Deadline
Warren, Pa. — The USDA Forest Service – Allegheny National Forest has extended the application period to fill committee member seats for the Allegheny Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) that covers Elk, Forest, McKean and Warren Counties to October 1, 2019. RACs were established as a provision of the Secure Rural Schools and Community SelfDetermination Act of 2000. The legislation sets aside funding for projects that improve watershed function and promote community economic development. Typically, the Allegheny RAC meets once a year to review and make recommendations on project proposals submitted for this funding.

By law the 4-year term, 15-member committee is composed of a wide representation of National Forest interests organized into three categories. Each RAC has 15 members with balanced and broad representation of interests in three categories, including: ·Category 1: organized labor or non-timber forest product harvester groups; developed outdoor recreation, off highway vehicle users, or commercial recreation activities; energy and mineral development interests; commercial or recreational fishing interests; commercial timber industry; holders of Federal grazing or other land use permits, and representatives of nonindustrial private forest land owners, within the area for which the committee is
organized. ·Category 2: nationally recognized environmental organizations; regionally or locally recognized environmental organizations; dispersed recreational activities; archaeological and historical interests; nationally or regionally recognized wild horse and burro interest groups, wildlife or hunting organizations, and watershed associations. ·Category 3: holder of State or local elected office, representatives of American Indian tribes within or adjacent to the area for which the committee is organized, school officials or teacher, and the affected public at large.

The following low-calorie recipe for “Crab Salad-Stuffed Tomatoes” from “Weightwatchers: Cook It Fast” (St. Martin’s Griffin) can be whipped up in 20 minutes, making it an ideal meal for time-strapped men and women who want homecooked meals without all the work that goes into more complex recipes. Crab Salad-Stuffed Tomatoes Serves 2 1⁄3 cup orzo 2 large tomatoes 1 cup crabmeat, picked over for pieces of shell 1⁄3 cup chopped black or green olives

1. Cook orzo according to package directions, omitting salt if desired. Drain and rinse under cold water; drain again. 2. Meanwhile, cut thin slice off tops of tomatoes; reserve tops. Using spoon, carefully scoop out seeds and pulp; reserve for another use. 3. Gently toss together crabmeat, olives, feta, dill, vinegar, salt, and pepper in medium bowl. Spoon crabmeat mixture evenly into tomato shells and cover with reserved tomato tops. Cook’s note: Scoop the seeds and pulp from the tomatoes into a storage container. Cover and freeze up to 4 months and toss them into a soup or stew.

Elsie’s Stewed Apples Serves 6 to 8 2 butter 2 1⁄2
to 3 tablespoons unsalted pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices cup honey, preferably sage
honey 1⁄2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish
1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1⁄2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

Women who are mid- to late-career might not benefit considerably or at all from the extra earnings if they’re paying for their advanced degrees themselves, as the cost of tuition and other fees might be higher than the extra earnings. In addition, some advanced degrees won’t necessarily lead to considerably higher salaries than you’re likely to earn with a bachelor’s degree. That will depend on your profession. Time The time required to pursue an advanced

negative reviews. Respond privately to customers, apologizing for their unsatisfactory experience and thanking them for their feedback. Dismissive, confrontational and/ or rude interactions with customers will only further damage your online reputation. • Actively monitor your reputation. Websites such as Yelp and Google, via its Google Reviews
capability, give customers plenty of places to go to share their comments about your business. Stay up-to-date on these, making a concerted effort to monitor your reputation. If you’re open for business seven days a week, chances are customers will be reviewing your business seven days a week. Reach out to customers who had negative experiences as soon as possible, and report any comments you feel violate websites’ standards the moment you see them. • Don’t hesitate to ask customers to edit
their reviews. When you successfully reach out to customers who left negative reviews, don’t hesitate to ask them to consider editing their reviews. Many customers are happy to update their reviews if issues were promptly and successfully addressed. Online reputation management is important for today’s business owners. Though managing online reputations can seem like a fulltime job, a positive reputation can greatly benefit your bottom line.

Obituaries
Paul F. McElwee Mr. McElwee was employed with Pittsburgh Corning Co., formerly of Port Allegany, for over 30 years, before his retirement. He was also a lifetime farmer. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the US Navy.
PORT ALLEGANY- Paul F. McElwee, 88, formerly of Hamilton Run Rd., passed away Monday (Sept. 2, 2019) in the Bradford Ecumenical Home, Bradford. Born April 7, 1931, in Port Allegany, he was a son of Edward and Mary McGill McElwee. Paul was a lifetime resident of the area and attended Port Allegany High School.

He is survived by three sons, Patrick M. (Brenda) McElwee and John R. (Phyllis) McElwee both of Port Allegany, and Edward P. McElwee of Lewis Run, PA; two daughters, Sara L. (Randy) Wilson of Emporium, and Beth Ann McElwee of Port Allegany; 11 grandchildren, 4
great-grand-children; a sister, Betty Corah of Port Allegany; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Tara Kellner; a brother, Edward “Jim” McElwee; two sisters, Mary Ann Losey and Donna Bosworth, and a brother-in-law, Robert Corah. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 5, 2019) with Rev. Joseph Dougherty officiating. Burial will be in Portage Valley Cemetery, Wrights. Memorials can be made to the Veteran’s Memorial Home, Port Allegany. Every batch of homemade beer does not turn out perfect, particularly for novices getting their feet wet as brewers. There may be some blips along the way, but important lessons can be learned through trial and error while honing the craft of brewing. Brewing beer dates back thousands of years. Residue on pottery dating from around 5,000 years ago shows beer was brewed using barley and other grains in China. There’s also a 3,900-year-old Sumerian poem honoring Ninkasi, the patron goddess of brewing, that contains the oldest surviving beer recipe. Brewers can learn a thing or two from the people who have brewed before them. The following are some mistakes to
avoid. • Not pitching enough yeast: Yeast feeds on the sugars in the grain and fires up the fermenting process. Home Brew Supply says that failing to pitch enough yeast can stress the yeast, result in longer lag times, create more esters, and even stall fermentation. Pitch rate calculators can help brewers figure out how much yeast to use. • Failure to sanitize properly: Experienced brewers understand that outside contaminants (like wild yeast) or other microorganisms can greatly affect a batch. Sterilization is essential for anything that comes in contact with the wort and beer. • Low-quality water: Water sets the stage for the flavor of the beer. Using water
straight from the tap may be adequate, but if the water has a lot of minerals or an offtaste, it can adversely affect the finished product. Using filtered water may be a better bet, according to Kegerator.com. • Improper measuring: All dry ingredients need to be measured by weight and not volume, says the brewing
resource Brew Cabin. Just like baking, brewing beer requires careful attention to how much of each ingredient is added to a recipe. • Old ingredients: Beer requires fresh ingredients, including hops and yeast; otherwise, the result may be skunky beer. • Temperature: Excessive temperature

can increase alcohol content and oversweeten brews. Using thermometers and monitoring temperature throughout the process are good habits. • Going big too soon: It can be exciting to brew beer and set high expectations. However, beginners should choose an easy recipe and start with a

Pour in enough cold water to make a batter of pouring consistency, almost like thick custard. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large pan. Pour a ladleful of the batter into the center and spread it in quick circles to form a flattish disc about 4 inches in diameter. Cover the pan and let the pancake cook in its steam. Flip the pancake over when the underside has turned gold and spotted. Cook the other side by dotting the edges with some oil and covering the pan. Keep warm. Make all the pancakes similarly and serve hot with chutney.

September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crash-landed. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is

one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families. • Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations. • Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m. • Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. • Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11
Memorial & Museum. • If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. • Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001. • Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs. • Attend a special
service commemorating 9-11 at houses of worship. • Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home. This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11. Editor’s Note: The Patriot Day celebrated on September 11 is a separate holiday from Patriot’s Day, which is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts.

WELLSVILLE — “You have been hugged!” That’s the message included with the comfort kits handcrafted by members of the Jones Memorial Hospital Auxiliary’s Lilac Twig. The kits will be given to youngsters who come to the JMH Emergency
Department and include a soft fleece blanket, a stuffed animal, and a book. Prompted by the desire to bring a little joy and comfort to a kids in a scary situation, several members of the Lilac Twig get together regularly to make and assemble the kits.
“We can’t thank the Lilac Twig enough for thinking of our young patients,” said Kelly Foster, director of Emergency and Cardiac Services at Jones. “They are sure to be appreciated by the kids and their families.”
