OF THE AMERICAN LEGION 2019
The McKean Cameron Bi-County Legions will celebrate the
100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE AMERICAN LEGION WITH A PARADE on Labor Day, September 2, 2019 in Smethport, PA at 1:00 p.m.
The Parade will begin in front of the courthouse proceeding East to Mechanic Street, turning South on Mechanic Street then turn West on Willow Street to the entrance of HAMLIN LAKE PARK. A short ceremony will follow.
Leading the parade will be motorcycles from the American Legion riders with participation from the VFW Riders, The Nam Knights and ABATE. The parade continue with the Honor Guard, The Bi-County Commander, the flags of the Bi-County Post then the members of all the legions both walking and riding. The Sons of the American Legion will follow carrying a large 15’ x 25’ American Flag. Members of the American Legion Auxiliary will also participate. All this will be followed by several high school bands separated by floats, ball teams, scouts and other groups helping celebrate this event. The end of the parade will consist of fire trucks and ambulances from the towns of the bi-counties.

What is Labor Day? The United States Department of Labor notes that Labor Day is a celebration of American workers that dates back to the 19th century. The day is meant to commemorate the contributions workers in the United States have made to the nation, helping to make it one of the strongest and most prosperous countries in the world. Who came up with the idea of Labor Day? Despite the fact that municipal legislation surrounding Labor Day was initially introduced in the 1880s, debate remains as to just who should be credited with proposing a day to honor American workers. Some records suggest that Peter J. McGuire, who served as general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and cofounded the American Federation of Labor, deserves the credit for Labor Day. However, the Department of Labor notes that many people believe a machinist
named Matthew Maguire (no relation to Peter) was the first to propose a holiday honoring workers in 1882. At that time Maguire was serving as secretary of New York’s Central Labor Union, which later adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic. The first Labor Day was ultimately celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in accordance with the plans made by the Central Labor Union, which strongly suggests that Maguire does, in fact, deserve the credit for coming up with the holiday. Why celebrate Labor Day? Labor Day is worth celebrating because, without the contributions of millions of workers every year, the United States would not be the success story it is and has been for more than 200 years. In addition to the United States, many countries across the globe, including Canada and Australia, have their own versions of Labor Day. Labor Day weekend might now be seen as the unofficial end of summer. But this Labor Day weekend, celebrants and workers should remember that Labor Day also should be a time to reflect on the value of hard work.

Allegheny National Forest conducts National Visitor Use Monitoring
Warren, Pa. (August 27, 2019) — The USDA Forest Service - Allegheny National Forest (ANF) will begin conducting National Visitor Use Monitoring (NVUM) in developed and dispersed recreation sites and along Forest Service roads beginning October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2020.

Wellsville YMCA Launches Many New Programs for Youth and Families
August 19, 2019 (Wellsville, NY) – The Wellsville YMCA has announced an array of new and returning programs starting in September.
“We’re very excited to increase the number of programs and services we offer at the YMCA,” shared Curtis Pierce, Associate Executive Director, Wellsville YMCA. “Y Family Time is about giving families as a unit, and as individuals, the opportunities to deepen relationships, develop new skills and interests, improve their health and well-being, and connect to the community.” The Y will offer several new programs tailored to area youth and families. Some programs are exclusive to YMCA members with
preferred pricing while others are available to nonmembers at a public program rate. For preschool kids the YMCA offers Kinder Club, a drop-off program for youngsters ages 3-5, features arts, crafts, gym games and swimming. The YMCA has also brought back its popular 60-minute Sports Bugs program which assists preschoolers in developing body awareness skills by learning gross motor skills.
A brand new offering for area youth in grades 7-12 is “Community Changemakers” which brings young people together offering them an opportunity to make in impact in our own community while finding their voices and activating their beliefs as they work to solve local issues. The club will meet every Wednesday evening at 7 p.m., and it is free for all participants. YMCA membership is not required for youth wishing to join this club.
Children in grades K-3 will have the opportunity to attend “Super Saturday” activities offered weekly from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Supervised activities will vary each week, and a monthly activity calendar will be available at the YMCA.
“Family Friday Nights” will make their debut on September 6. Every Friday night the YMCA will offer members the opportunity to play games, watch movies and interact with other families while spending time with their own family. An
