Why Labor Day is worth celebrating
Labor Day weekend is much -anticipated. Many people look forward to Labor Day weekend because it offers one last extended break to enjoy summer weather. Though summer does not officially end until September is nearly over, for many people Labor Day, which is celebrated annually on the first Monday in September, marks the unofficial end of summer. But Labor Day is more than just one final chance to embrace the relaxed vibe of summer and soak up some rays. In fact, Labor Day boasts a unique history that’s worth celebrating for a variety of reasons. What is Labor Day? The United States Department of Labor notes that Labor Day is a celebration of American workers that dates back to the 19th century. The day is meant to commemorate the contributions workers in the United States have made to the nation, helping to make it one of the strongest and most prosperous countries in the world.
legislation surrounding Labor Day was initially introduced in the 1880s, debate remains as to just who should be credited with proposing a day to honor American workers. Some records suggest that Peter J. McGuire, who served as general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and cofounded the American Federation of Labor, deserves the credit for Labor Day. However, the Department of Labor notes that many people believe a machinist named Matthew Maguire (no relation to Peter) was the first to propose a holiday honoring workers in 1882. At that time Maguire was serving as secretary of New York’s
Who came up with the idea of Labor Day? Despite the fact that municipal
Central Labor Union, which later adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic. The first Labor Day was ultimately celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in accordance with the plans made by the Central Labor Union, which strongly suggests that Maguire does, in fact, deserve the credit for coming up with the holiday. Why celebrate Labor Day? Labor Day is worth celebrating because, without the contributions of millions of workers every year, the United States would not be the success story it is and has been for more than 200 years. In addition to the United States, many countries across the globe, including Canada and Australia, have their own versions of Labor Day. Labor Day weekend might now be seen as the unofficial end of summer. But this Labor Day weekend, celebrants and workers should remember that Labor Day also should be a time to reflect on the value of hard work.

Safety suggestions for wilderness enthusiasts
The wilderness is awe-inspiring. The great outdoors is a wonder to behold, and each year millions of people experience the great outdoors firsthand, creating memories that will last a lifetime. The popularity of outdoor activities is perhaps the greatest testament to the beauty of nature. According to the Outdoor Industry Association®, roughly half of the United States population ages six and over participated in at least one outdoor activity in 2017. Statistics Canada notes that the great outdoors is perhaps even more popular just north of the U.S., where nearly seven in 10 Canadians participated in outdoor or wilderness activities in 2016. As breathtaking as the wilderness can be,
it also can be dangerous. Safety is of paramount importance when spending time in the wilderness. Whether you’re a seasoned outdoorsman or a novice experiencing the wilderness for the first time, accidents can happen. Preparation can help people avoid potentially life-threatening situations in the wilderness. In fact, the U.S.
Forest Service notes that the most effective way to prevent mishaps in the wilderness is to adequately prepare for a trip into the wild. The following tips, courtesy of the USFS, can help make trips into the wilderness safer. • Never go it alone. The USFS advises against going it alone in the wilderness. Without a travel
companion, outdoor enthusiasts may find themselves without any help in the case of emergencies like injuries or accident. The USFS recommends traveling in groups no smaller than four people when visiting remote areas. In such instances, one person can stay behind with an injured friend while the others leave

to seek help. In addition, never travel to a remote area without being accompanied by someone who’s familiar with that area. • Share your itinerary. Leave a detailed copy of your itinerary with someone who won’t be joining you. Include details like the make, year and license plate number of your vehicle as well as the equipment you’re bringing. List the weather you’re anticipating on your itinerary and where you’re planning to go, including trail names, if possible. If unexpected and dangerous weather rolls in, the person holding your itinerary can alert local forestry professionals. • Be in good physical condition. The wilderness is a challenging place, so only those with the skills and the physical ability to negotiate it should attempt to do so. When planning a trip, design it with the weakest member of your group in mind. People with medical conditions should discuss their plans
with their physicians prior to entering the wilderness. • Stick to developed trails. Footing near cliffs can be difficult, and nearby trees and shrubs might not be reliable sources of support. So stick to developed trails or dry, solid rock areas that provide adequate footing. • Study the forecast. Study the forecast and any predictions that might affect conditions on the day(s) of your trip. Weather can change quickly in the wilderness, so make sure to pack the appropriate attire for any potential weather suggested in the forecast. • Learn basic first aid. Basic first aid can save lives. Learn how to identify and treat injuries and illness. Contact a local parks department to learn the basics. The wilderness is an awe-inspiring yet sometimes dangerous place. The first modern craft brewer
Over the course of the 1960s and 1970s, the brewing industry in the United States was undergoing significant change. In the past, immigrants who relocated to the United States brought their native countries’ favorite styles of beer with them. However, according to the Brewers Association, as the 1970s wore on, those styles were disappearing from store shelves and bars and being replaced with light lagers. But around this same time a grassroots movement that still resonates today was beginning to take shape. That movement was rooted in home brewing, which became popular as more and more U.S. residents wanted to enjoy styles of beers from other countries that they could no longer find in stores and bars. One man with such an interest was Frederick Louis “Fritz” Maytag III, the great grandson of the founder of the Maytag Corporation. In 1965, Fritz Maytag III
purchased the California-based Anchor Brewing Company, which was founded in 1896 but had, by the 1950s and 1960s, developed a reputation for creating ill-tasting beer. Upon purchasing the brewery, Maytag changed the recipe of its flagship beer and the
process of brewing it. The beer ultimately became very popular, and Maytag even helped other brewers in the art of microbrewing. For his efforts, Maytag, who sold the brewery in 2010, is widely credited with being the first modern craft brewer.

Understanding ovarian cancer
Ovarian cancer accounts for about 3 percent of all cancers in women, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Despite such relatively small incidence rates, ovarian cancer causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. Gynecologic cancers are any that affect the female
reproductive system, including cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer, and vulvar cancer. Ovarian cancers were previously believed to originate only in the ovaries, which are the two reproductive glands in women that produce eggs for reproduction. However, the American Cancer Society notes that
recent evidence suggests that many ovarian cancers actually may start in the cells in the far ends of the fallopian tubes. The ovaries are the main source of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. The ovaries mainly contain three types of cells. These cells are affected differently by cancer and give ovarian cancer its subcategories, which include: epithelial tumors (cells on the outer ovary surface), germ cell tumors (cells that produce ova) and stromal tumors (tissues that holds the ovaries together). Scientists continue to study the genes responsible for ovarian cancer and have uncovered some information about the connection between genes and ovarian cancer. For example, research in this area has led to more effective
ways to detect high-risk genes and make recommendations with the goal of reducing a woman’s risk for ovarian cancer, says the ACS. Studies have shown that fallopian tube/ovarian cancers develop in women with BRCA gene mutations more often than doctors had previously suspected. Recognizing key symptoms of ovarian cancer can encourage women to take prompt action. The Mayo Clinic states that, while early-stage ovarian cancer rarely causes any symptoms, as the disease progresses it may cause issues that are often mistaken for more benign conditions. Being aware of even subtle bodily changes can prompt women to speak with their doctors. Symptoms may include: • abdominal bloating or swelling; • weight loss;
August 22, 2019
• quickly feeling full when eating; • discomfort in the pelvic area; • changes in bowel habits, such as constipation; • frequent need to urinate; • abnormal periods; and • unexplained back pain. Medline-Plus, a health information resource sponsored by U.S. National Library of Medicine, notes that, to diagnose ovarian cancer, doctors usually perform a physical exam, a pelvic exam, lab tests, an ultrasound, or a biopsy. Treatment usually involves surgery followed by chemotherapy. The sooner ovarian cancer is found and treated, the better a woman’s chance for recovery. Therefore, being aware of unusual symptoms is essential.

While men often lean toward majors like engineering and computer science that have traditionally been linked to high earnings, women have historically gravitated to lower-paying specialties like education and social sciences. But in recent years a shift has occurred, and more women have begun to choose majors associated with higher post-graduate salaries. Reports from the career guidance site
BLACKTOP
Choosing a college major is an important decision that many students delay making until their sophomore or even junior years. Only after taking a few courses and uncovering one’s interests do some college students figure out what they want to do with their lives. Each student is different, and while some may pursue a degree based on a particular passion, others may choose majors that can lead to high-paying jobs.
Glassdoor analyzed how much male and female professionals with the same college degree earned and identified many instances in which women went on to earn more than men in the first five years of their career. They’ve identified several majors where female college graduates can earn as much or more than their male counterparts and find successful careers. • Architecture • Pharmaceutical

Female students unsure of which major they want to pursue can take career assessments to help narrow down their options. Working with mentors or engaging in internships also can present a first-hand idea of high-paying career paths.

What is ABV?
Read a bottle or can of beer and you will likely come across a percentage rating. That percentage is the alcohol by volume, or ABV. This number tells just how much alcohol is in the beer. ABV will coordinate
to exactly how many ounces of alcohol are in the beverage. If a standard size bottle of beer (12 ounces) has a 5.0 ABV, that means the bottle has 0.6 ounces of pure alcohol. A standard drink is typically
measured at 0.6 ounces of alcohol. That is why spirits like wine and liquor that have a higher “proof” or ABV despite their much smaller serving sizes. A beer’s ABV can affect the flavor of the beer and the overall body and mouth-feel, offers, VinePair, a beverage information site. Session beers have relatively low ABVs at around 4.5 percent. Many pale ales have moderate alcohol content. IPAs and some new craft beers can have ABVs
Page 11
of 6 percent and up. Some breweries today are even pushing the limits of beer ABV into double-digits, producing brews that pack a powerful punch. The thinking may be to offer more bang for the buck on higher-priced glasses and pints.
