Local Tractors Hit the Pits for Summer Pulls By Elizabeth Riggs
Start your engines! ‘Tis the season for tractor pulls! Brace yourselves — it’s about to get loud all throughout Western New York as the areas mightiest machines all vie for pride and prizes during the various truck and tractor pulls to enjoy in the area this season. Tractor and truck pulling, also known as power pulling, is considered the world’s most powerful motorsport. The idea of pulling as a sport began prior to the invention of the tractor, when farmers would make friendly competitions on the strength of their horse teams, competing to determine whose was most powerful by pulling large loads for certain distances.

Tractors and motorvehicles entered the picture in the 1920s, and tractor pulling gained popularity in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. Today the sport of tractor pulling requires modified tractors to pull a heavy sled along a 35 foot wide, 330 foot
long track. The winner is the tractor that pulls the sled the farthest. For East Concord, the local Truck & Tractor is one of the area’s only claims to fame, as they host an annual tractor pull this Saturday, July 22 at 4 p.m. See Tractor Pulls page 6
