Ellicottville falls on ECS Board Talks Security, buzzer-beater after rallying WV Sports Merger

A brief overview on school security — and how Superintendent Bob Miller has been responding to questions from concerned parents — was presented Tuesday to the Ellicottville School Board of Education.

Miller explained to the board that following the Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Fla., school safety is a topic that has been on parents’ minds.

“I have taken some calls and some emails from concerned parents and I’m trying to return them as quickly as I can to let them know we are doing everything we can to protect their child,” Miller said. “The parents have been appreciative of that and I have shared a number of things we are doing.”

Among them, Miller said the school is continuing their lockdown drills with two more to be performed. He said school staff have already made recommendations based on previous drills and have improved their effectiveness.

“We really take the time; we scour the building,” Miller said. “We look for the doors

Ellicottville Joins ‘ThinkDIFFERENTLY’ Movement

The Ellicottville Town Board voted to join the “ThinkDIFFERENTLY” movement during the Feb. 21 meeting. A resolution in support of the initiative was adopted, with the goal of fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for residents with special needs.

Town Supervisor Matt McAndrew pointed out that Ellicottville has been mindful of this issue and one prominent example can be seen at the ski areas. For many years, opportunities have been provided to skiers with special needs at both Holiday Valley and HoliMont.

“The adaptive ski programs are truly amazing and it’s been here for years. My feeling is we should adopt this,” said McAndrew, before a vote was taken to pass the resolution.

The move was prompted by a Jan. 31 letter from Dutchess County Executive Marcus J. Molinaro, who launched the initiative in 2015. On the organization’s website, www.thinkdifferently. net, 38 towns, eight cities, three counties, and 17 villages are listed as having the resolution in place.

Also, there are suggested steps to foster a compassionate community and unite residents for the common good. Those could include seeking partnerships with community groups and finding sponsors for creative community events, like the one-mile “Think Differently Dash.”

Adaptive playgrounds, special needs Little League, movies shown with lowered volume, and “autism supportive environment training” are some of the other approaches taken in communities that have seen positive results.

Town Planner Gary Palumbo presented a proposed draft of a town zoning law amendment to relax restrictions on illuminated signs, which was to be presented

Monday night (Feb. 26) to the Town Planning Board.

While some of the language of the amendment clarifies that lighted signs are permitted, it also proposes the addition of dimmer capabilities, discouraging advertising for other businesses and eliminating the twice-daily interval timing between wording changes. He suggested the interval should last somewhere between one and 10 minutes and signs should be located in industrial or commercial areas.

Currently, illuminated signs are in place at Holiday Valley Road and in front of BOCES on Route 242.

Board members asked Palumbo to first poll the town’s Planning Board members on their wishes for the length of the intervals and other provisions of the amendment.

Palumbo explained the signs should not use visual effects that would be distracting to drivers.

In another matter, a public meeting with an eye toward grant funding will be held at 6 p.m. March 22 at the Town Center on Parkside Drive. The topic of the meeting is a community survey that is being mailed this week and must be returned by March 9 for the purposes of a grant application. Additional meetings of the town and village boards will follow, on March 24 and April 14. Town Board members will be present at the sessions.

Following a public hearing, the Board amended its 2009 law that had granted Cold War veterans a partial exemption in town real property taxes for a period of 10 years.

The 10-year sunset provision was removed from the law, but Board members were reminded the exemption does not extend to taxes levied by the school district.

The Board also

discussed sidewalks, pavement and potholes.

One of the topics involved a complaint and a request to seek pavement repairs on Route 219, which is breaking down due to heaving, salt and age. The Board members agreed to direct the town’s engineer to request a rebuilding plan from the state.

“People are slowing down,” one Board member commented.

Sidewalk plowing on an as-needed basis, an equipment expense shared with the Village and performed by the village crews, will be monitored in the future by the town’s engineer for timing in an effort to resolve complaints.

In another matter, a payment to engineer Mark Alianello of $4,700 was authorized to adjusted payment error from the 2017 budget.

In other Board action: • Employment of patrolman David Tobia was approved a rate of pay of $18.37 per hour.

• The engineer’s report was received, containing an estimate of $150,000 for new windows and doors in the Town Hall.

Grant funding for the payment will be sought.

• Shawn Lafferty, an employee of the Town Highway Department and a volunteer for the West Valley Volunteer Hose Company, was recognized. He was named West Valley Firefighter of the Year on Jan. 20.

In recognizing Lafferty, Board members noted he is an asset to the West Valley Hose Company and the towns of Ellicottville and Ashford.

• Supervisor McAndrew reported on the Feb. 5 Four Flushers meeting, where 10 residential properties were counted as still in line for the new “remote-read” water meter heads. Once completed all meters in the system will be installed and can be read in just one day.

The next Ellicottville Town Board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 28.

Pound Fitness Coming to Core Performance

One of the hottest new fitness trends is coming to Ellicottville when Core Performance hosts an allnew Pound class.

If you’re one of the millions of people who caught the first season of This is Us, you probably caught a glimpse of what it is when Kate went away to a retreat and pounded her way to an emotional breakthrough. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, that’s OK too—just read on.

Pound is a cardio workout using weighted drum sticks, where you

sit on, stand by and move around a yoga mat, pounding the sticks on the floor, over your head and at every point in between to the rhythm of a variety of music. The workout entails different movements using mostly your arms and legs.

Instructor April Woolley, a teacher in the Pioneer school district, has been offering the class in Colden, and is now bringing the high-energy and just plain fun workouts to Ellicottville. Speaking from experience, the workout can be tailored to all levels. I’m definitely a beginner, and I’ve been

attending April’s classes with my 12-year-old daughter. From the get-go, both of us felt at ease. So we miss a beat or two or 100 with our sticks—no one cares. Participants are encouraged to just do the best they can. No judgment.

On Saturday, March 10, head to Holiday Valley for their spectacular Winter Carnival, with several new activities on tap.

Highlights include the new Snow Kayak demo down Cindy’s, where experts maneuver kayaks down the ski slope. “The North Face Shop in Rochester brought up the idea and we thought it would be great to add some excitement to Carnival,” said Holiday Valley Marketing Director, Jane Eshbaugh.

From noon to 3 p.m., Creekside will host family events that include a DJ dance party, obstacle race, scavenger hunt and kiddie tubing, which are also new additions to the carnival.

At 2 p.m., check out or take part in the bikini/beer slalom on lower Yodeler.

At 3 p.m., don’t miss the Cardboard Box Race, which, according to Eshbaugh, will be held either at Cindy’s or School Haus, and include prizes for most original, funniest, best costumes and fastest time. Entry in the race is $5; details and entry form can be found at holidayvalley.com/carnival.

The fun continues Sunday with another full lineup of activities at the Valley. Starting at 9 a.m., grab a bite at the Ski Patrol Pancake Breakfast at the top of Champagne warming hut.

The Costume Parade begins at noon, with line up at 11:45 a.m. Put some effort into those costumes— judging is at the bottom of the hill and the prizes are awesome!

Also at noon is the Lederhosen Ski Club hot dog cookout and Ellicottville Ski Club wine and cheese, located slopeside by Holiday Valley Lodge.

At 2 p.m. head to Yodeler for the Dummy Downhill, where participants send their homemade dummies down the hill. If you’re looking to enter a dummy of your own, here are the requirements: Dummies may not exceed 40 pounds in weight, 6 feet in height or 36 inches in width of stance. Dummies may not use any metal bracing or metal weights. Acceptable construction materials include wood, plastic, wire, tape, foam rubber, vinyl, cardboard or plastic tubing. Dummies should be mounted to skis or a snowboard and may not be living or breathing.

Finally, to round out the event, the Holiday Valley Ski Patrol will be holding their annual food drive for the Ellicottville Food Pantry. Donate at Tops Markets March 10 and 11, or bring your donation to the Mardi Gras Parade, when ski patrollers will be roaming the parade route to collect the donations.

On March 18, from noon to 3 p.m., Hope Lutheran Church, located at 2 East Main Street in Arcade, along with Black Raven Pottery, will offer a soup and bread luncheon to help end world hunger.

The cost for the luncheon is $15 advance sales and $20 at the door. The price

includes a soup and bread lunch in a hand made pottery bowl crafted by a local potter just for this event. You will take the bowl with you after the meal.

There will also be a Chinese auction with a variety of items and baskets. All monies

On March 4, check out a new snowboarding event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Boardroom Banked Slalom is a new snowboarding event with a banked slalom course on Independence, as well as a vendor village and cookout on the Champagne Sundeck at Yodeler Lodge.

March 9-11, don’t miss the highlight of the winter in Ellicottville during Mardi Gras and Winter Carnival Weekend. The weekend is full of parades, cookouts, and loads of family-friendly fun.

March 17 is not only St. Patrick’s Day, but also a chance for skiers and riders to experience the giant Intense Milk bottle at the base of Yodeler at the Intense Milk Rail Jam from noon to 2 p.m. It’s free to enter but you must have a lift ticket and a helmet. Kids under 18 must have a parent signature to participate.

The following day, squeeze into your speed suit and get ready for this fun Super G on Northwind— everyone’s invited! Cost is $5 per racer; register at the Training Center. Training runs from 9:30 to 10:30.

Rangers race at 11:00, everyone else at 12:30.

Helmets required, speed suit (or costume) optional.

Always another great time on the slopes, the annual Pond Skimming returns to Holiday Valley on Saturday, March 24. Sign up to skim across an ice water filled pond or come cheer on your

favorite competitors.

If you love tubing, get to Holiday Valley Tubing Company! The tubing park offers up to 22 lanes of fast-paced downhill fun, two tows to pull you back up, and a ‘Lil Tubers area for the tykes. ECS NEWS ECS Students Return from Costa Rica

On the week of Feb. 18, 13 students and three chaperones from Ellicottville Central embarked on a school trip to Costa Rica. Their trip lasted for nine days and covered the entirety of the small Latin American country.

The first day saw their flight from Toronto to San Jose – the Costa Rican capital – and, for some students, was their first time leaving the United States.

The second day brought the students to tour a dairy farm. There they learned about the inner workings of the farm and were given the opportunity to milk some of the cows. Later that day, the group went to a pineapple plantation and learned about the work and time that goes into harvesting them.

The next morning began early; the group woke at sunrise for a long bus ride to the Arenal Volcano, where they went kayaking and swam in the nearby Arenal Lake. On the way to the next stop, students stopped to see one of the many waterfalls Costa Rica has to offer. Later that day, they went on a hike through the rainforest near the volcano. The hike included a series of hanging bridges, where several students discovered a new fear of heights.

Another long drive brought the group to a cloud forest, where they walked for about a mile and a half and learned more about the different types

of forests found in the Latin American country.

The group learned that the difference between cloud forests and rainforests – the two main types of forests found in Costa Rica – lies in the elevation and moisture levels. In the evening, the group went to a frog pond to learn about more of the wildlife that can be found in Costa Rica.

The group went zip lining through the forest the next day, traveling on over a dozen cords – two of which were around half a mile long. From there, the group went for dancing lessons, and learned more traditional Costa Rican dance types such as the merengue, salsa, and cumbia. Later that day, they went on a coffee tour and learned more about the major Costa Rican industry of coffee manufacturing.

On the sixth day, the bus ride to the Pacific coast took about four hours.

The group took a break about halfway through to visit and volunteer at a sanctuary primarily meant for the scarlet and great green macaw breeds. Later that day, they arrived on the coast, a beach of black sand due to previous volcanic

activity in the area.

The same day, several members of the group went on a night walk through the forest, a tour guided by a man who pointed out several species indigenous to the area. Many of the students were surprised to learn that scorpions possess a characteristic that allows them to glow in the dark under a black light. The group also spotted several sleeping birds, a tarantula, and a green species of venomous snake known as the eyelash viper.

On the seventh and final day before the flight home, they visited the Manuel Antonio National Park for a beach day. It was quickly discovered that the wildlife there is much friendlier than in Ellicottville, and especially more daring – several attempts were made to steal the snacks brought by beachgoers.

The students and chaperones alike agreed that this trip to Costa Rica was an incredibly enjoyable experience, one that opened up their eyes to a new culture and brought them – even if only for a week – beyond the back-wood boundaries of western New York.

Examples have included rearranging how children hide in a room during a lockdown to better hide all students, to ensuring the public address system in the school is functioning in every room.

Miller said safety training will be among the topics at an upcoming staff development day in mid-March, and middle and high school principal Erich Ploetz is expected to attend a training in Utica on understanding mental health. Miller also plans to meet with other superintendents soon at Randolph for a gathering that will also focus on school safety.

Miller also mentioned the school’s improved camera system, which was demonstrated to the school board earlier this year, and said his upcoming newsletter article will focus on school safety.

“We’ve done a lot to try and keep kids safe,” he said.

The school board on Tuesday also held a discussion about its current sports merger agreement with the West Valley Central School District, which enters its fourth and final year next year. Miller explained to the board that keeping a merger with West Valley will likely push Ellicottville up to Class C in most sports based on BEDS numbers, which are calculated to determine a

school’s classification.

After explaining the process of how a BEDS number is determined, Miller said Ellicottville on its own has a BEDS number of 149, which is the highest number for a Class D school.

“So if we continue the merger into next year, then we know we are going up to the Cs,” Miller said. “And when we first brought this all together five years ago when we started talking about this, we knew that could be a possibility back then.

But we were also seeing a bigger number of students from West Valley and a number of athletes.”

Some sports this year — like varsity boys soccer and varsity girls basketball, for example — did not have any West Valley students competing on the Ellicottville team.

However, those teams next year would still be forced to move up to Class C regardless.

To add to the conundrum, Miller said Section VI is changing the formula for how classifications are determined for the 201920 sports seasons, and early signs point toward Ellicottville being a Class C school regardless of its affiliation with West Valley.

“If we broke the agreement and went on our own next year, then we are a D. But the way I am crunching the numbers we would move up to a C the following year,” Miller said. “And that will fluctuate from year to year depending on the class size.”

It was advised Miller speak with West Valley Superintendent Eric Lawton to determine West Valley’s interest in continuing the sports merger and proceed depending on whether West Valley continues to need Ellicottville’s assistance in fielding teams.

“The thing in the back of my mind is kids,” Miller said. “I don’t want to pull the rug out from a kid in any way, shape or form.

But we also want to be fair.

It’s kind of hard to get your hands around all of this.”

On a related sports note, the school board approved Ellicottville’s spring sports coaches.

They are: Chris Mendell, varsity baseball; Jason Marsh, modified baseball; Matt Finn, varsity softball; Tracie Rapaciolli-Myers, junior varsity softball; Leah Klahn, modified softball; Dan LaCroix, golf; Glenn Hall, assistant golf; and Pat Waldron for track team combined with Franklinville.

Miller also informed the board Section VI denied its appeal to stay in Class D for football next year, meaning the team, which is combined with Franklinville, will play in Class C. Football has a different system to determine its classifications, Miller explained.

The Ellicottville School Board of Education will host budget work sessions at 7 p.m. March 6 and March 20 prior to its next regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. March 27.

first shot, making the score 60-all. With one more shot to come, McCann called a full timeout. He knew his senior guard would make the go-ahead attempt, even when having 60 seconds to ponder it.

“I had full confidence in Griff,” McCann said. “We wanted to try and make sure that the kids knew that they needed to get back because we knew Anderson was going to get the ball and get a head of steam.”

McCann, unfortunately for the Eagles and their Section 6 title hopes, was right on both counts. Chudy made his last free throw. But Anderson drove the length of the court, slicing past the defense for the winning layup with three ticks left, and senior-laden Ellicottville saw its season end in tears, 62-61.

The fourth-seeded Eagles’ desperation heave came after the final buzzer sounded.

They rallied from 10 points down in the fourth quarter to take the lead in the Class D semifinal contest at Jamestown Community College. But a win over the top seed — a team three years removed from a Class B title and seven from a Class A crown — escaped them because of Anderson.

The senior guard slashed and shot his way to a gamehigh 37 points for East (16-6).

“They needed all of them,” McCann said.

“Coach said just to take us home,” Anderson said, “and I didn’t want to go home this early in the season.”

Thus, in Friday’s 6 p.m. championship game at JCC, Starling Bryant’s Panthers will meet thirdseeded defending champion Franklinville, which pulled away from No. 2 Sherman, 61-45, in Tuesday’s nightcap.

Ellicottville struggled with East’s trapping pressure early, turning the ball over 13 times in falling behind 17-7 in the first quarter. The Eagles found themselves down 10 again early in the fourth, when they went on a 13-2 run to take the lead, 54-53, with 3:31 left.

A layup by Ellicottville’s Steven Rowland (14 points) with 33 seconds left broke a 57-57 tie. Anderson was fouled on a 3-pointer on the next possession and hit all three shots to give East the lead again before the thrilling final sequence.

Elliot Bowen, Ellicottville’s all-time leading scorer, tallied seven of his 15 points in the fourth, and East committed nine turnovers in the period to aid the Eagles’ comeback.

“The Bowen kid … I love that guy. He’s a great player,” Bryant said of the 6-foot-6 senior center with 1,000-plus career points and rebounds.

“We tried to put two and three on him — as many as possible, we wanted to put on him. We did a pretty good job defensively because I don’t think we could’ve

done anything with just one or even two guys. We tried to triple him as much as possible.”

He added, “I’m glad to see them be tested, but I wasn’t pleased with some of the turnovers and some of the decisions we made late. Some of the guys that we depend upon made some bonehead mistakes today that you shouldn’t make in this type of situation. … We were lucky to get out of here.”

Chudy finished with 16 points to lead Ellicottville, whose season ends at 19-3.

“We spend about nine months a year together,” said a choked-up McCann, whose senior tri-captains, Bowen, Chudy and Austin Grinols, were four-year players with a 63-23 record. “There were times they could’ve given up, but they battled and that’s the way they’ve been. That’s the way they’ve been all year, that’s the way they’ve been their whole careers.

“I told them that they shouldn’t hang their heads.

They’ve got their whole lives in front of them, and they’ve got a community that’s shown them a lot of support over the years. I think they earned a lot of respect from a lot of people tonight as well.”

FRANKLINVILLE endured its worst shooting night of the season — 4-of24 from 3-point range (17 percent) — but won a slugfest with Sherman (16-6) thanks to senior Sam Erickson’s 23 points.

In a rematch of last year’s Class D final, which the Panthers won for their first title in 25 years, Franklinville’s halftime lead was 21-17.

With six minutes left, the Panthers (19-3) led by only five. But that’s when Erickson, playing with four fouls, took over by attacking the basket. He scored his team’s next 11 points, stretching the Franklinville lead to 12 and keeping the Panthers’ hopes of a return to the state final four alive.

“Sammy will understand that I would’ve wanted him to do that even earlier, and I think he probably could’ve,” Franklinville coach Jeff Haskell said.

“I just knew our team needed it,” Erickson said.

“We needed to get something going. We were struggling shooting, so I’m just like,

‘I’m going to get to the rim.’”

Senior Darren Clark added 18 points for the Panthers.

“So much talk was made about us and being in the finals, maybe against East,” Haskell said. “We told ourselves we couldn’t look past this one. I don’t think we did, but we certainly didn’t play our best. Hopefully we got that one out of the way.”

But Haskell liked seeing his players overcome an off shooting game.

“We talked a little at halftime about who we’ve played,” he said. “You go through our schedule and we have about every non-league game other than maybe one, they’re a (sectional) semifinalist or finalist right now. Our guys believed that they could win. I don’t think we were overwhelmed by missing those shots. I think that they believed they were going to win even with missing those shots. We know we’re going to have a bad night, but the credit on that goes to Sherman.”

Town Planning Board Reviews Stillhouse Signage

The Ellicottville Town Planning Board met Monday, Feb. 26 and mapped out a set of zoning code amendments for message boards and approved some conditions for signage at a Stilllhouse restaurant, brewery and distillery set to open soon.

The two-story building, constructed last fall just north of the intersection of Routes 219 and 242 and east of Tim Horton’s, will house a restaurant and bar with 54 beer taps. Plans also call for a 5,000 square foot facility for an inhouse brewery, winery and distillery. The project has received $750,000 in County Industrial Development Agency tax incentives and projects 10-14 employees.

Carl Calarco, an engineer who designed the structure and attended the meeting, said the opening is targeted for April.

Before voting to grant a sign permit and a set of revised conditions, the Board members pored over drawings provided by the applicant, as well as the site plan that was approved in 2016, discussing at length the lighting for the Stillhouse signage proposal. One round sign and one rectangular sign were requested, with a gooseneck overhead light and an awning.

The Board members discussed the proposal’s features for the central image of a raised skull image, surrounded by 6 mm LED bulbs with unknown wattage on at least one of the signs. Also discussed at length were regulations forbidding backlighting and internal lighting, distance from the roadway and questioned a slogan to appear with the Stillhouse name on the awning, “Where Buffalo Meets Ellicottville,” along with other factors.

The approved permit will have five attached conditions: A wall sign on the south facade must be limited to 96 square feet, while size will be limited to 50 feet for a wall sign on the west facade. LED lighting for the sign must be accentonly and dimmable, with the goal of preventing glare on the busy roadway. Lettering

on the Stillhouse awning must be limited to the name of the business. A logo shown on the application drawings at lower left side of the south facade will not be permitted. And a revised drawing must be provided to the Code Enforcement Officer before permits are issued for gooseneck lighting over the rectangular sign on the south side of the facade, reconciling an apparent conflict with the sign structure.

Town Planner Gary Palumbo asked the Board to consider issues regarding the Stillhouse parking lot.

The approved site plan called for a paved parking lot, but the Stillhouse owner now favors a special dry rolled concrete pavement design. Calarco told the Board that the surface is hard and more durable than asphalt.

He added that the owner has purchased another adjoining property and in the future may allow enlargement of the parking lot, acknowledging that this will the the subject of a future site plan application.

All present agreed that an expansion of the parking lot would not be requested now to prevent interference with opening the business in April.

Town Engineer Mark Alianello said that in his opinion this surface, called Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC), will work fine and accomplish what the Planning Board wants for the originally-approved site plan, though a new permit will have to be sought for another parking lot on the new parcel.

Palumbo cautioned that the adjoining lot cannot be used for parking until it is applied for, subjected to a public hearing and approved by the Planning Board.

The Board then took up Palumbo’s drafted changes in the sign code for “message boards” that may receive Planning Board permits within the zoning law.

The amendments in that section were discussed at length and refined by the group, and the new draft was found acceptable to send to the town board for further review.

In general, electronic message board signs will be redefined, and provisions made to allow a larger percentage of the overall sign area to contain a digital, static, changeable display lasting five seconds, with the transition to be instantaneous.

Current regulations limit message boards to two changes per day and state the changeable message surface may only take up half the full sign. The amendment would allow a two-thirds area for the message.

There will be limitations for the distance of these signs from certain zoning districts, with the goal of limiting impact on nearby residences. The draft states message board signs will not be permitted in C, A-R, LD or MD districts.

A zoning amendment will be sent to the Town Board for review and revision and referred back to the Planning Board if it is found acceptable. A public hearing, along with a SEQR determination, will be required before it is eventually ultimately approved, or shelved, by the Town Board.

Palumbo also informed the Board that he received an inquiry from a Verizon engineer interested in installing micro-cellular boosters in the town. He said these micro-antennas are placed on buildings or utility poles with transformers to fill in holes in coverage and improve the quality of reception for the surround 1,000 square feet.

The town’s regulations deal with telecommunications towers and Palumbo said he will ask the Verizon representative to approach any project from that perspective. Several Board members said they want to cooperate with any effort that will improve power and capacity while avoiding more towers.

Some discussion focused on Spectrum’s booster “boxes” that have been installed on power poles around the town. Each is placed on poles with transformers and contain three led-acid batteries.

Health & Fitness: Consistency is Key Clayton Silvernail

Through my years as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor, I have noticed the one main ingredient that keeps people from reaching their fitness goals. That ingredient is consistency! People tend to be impatient when it comes to exercise. Too many times people do not give their exercise plans enough time to reap the benefits they are looking for.

No matter what we do in life, we will not achieve the success we want unless we work at it day in and day out for months and months.

The same goes for your exercise programs. You can have the best trainer in the world, and the best diet to follow, but if you do not stick with it consistently, you will wind up spinning your wheels. This can be very frustrating for someone who is trying to achieve fitness goals.

I feel there are three main components in any exercise program to build lean muscle and lose unwanted body fat: strength training, cardiovascular exercise, and proper nutrition. All three are equally important on achieving your goals in fitness.

If one is not executed consistently, the other two will suffer and so will your progress. Don’t get me wrong— to assume we can be perfect, 100 percent of the time will just be setting ourselves up for failure. Our goal should be to follow our

programs the best we can day in and day out, most of the time. The longer the time you stick with something, the better you will become at it.

Strength training has always been my favorite piece of the exercise equation. Depending on your goals, you should perform some type of strength training with weights anywhere from 3-6 times per week. The importance of strength training is that it will help increase your lean, tone body mass, thus giving a better shape to the body and increasing you basal metabolic rate. Muscle is like a 24-hour furnace, so we must be sure we maintain or even increase our lean muscle to keep the metabolism on the rise.

To help keep you more dedicated, I would find a workout partner or hire the help of a qualified personal trainer. This way you are held accountable. I am more likely to go to the gym if I know there is someone waiting for me. Also having a training partner or trainer will keep you more focused and motivated during your workouts and will keep you from getting bored of the same old routine.

Cardiovascular activity is necessary to keep the metabolism roaring and help you burn some extra calories that will lead to fat loss. The main reason I choose to do a good amount of cardio is that it allows me to eat more food and still make the fat loss results I am looking for.

Some people who rely on diet alone to lose fat find themselves losing weight, but also a lot of muscle.

Keeping a little bit more food in the diet, but using cardio to burn more calories will end up in retention of lean muscle while losing

the fat.

I would recommend doing your cardio first thing in the morning, 30 minutes plus, before breakfast. This way it is out of the way, and it will really boost your energy for a good portion of the day to follow. It is a little tough in the beginning, but after a week, you will feel so good doing it, you will be locked into a routine.

If there is no way you can do it first thing in the morning, I would do it right after you train with weights or at night after your last meal. Bring a headset with your favorite music to help the time go faster.

The nutrition element can be the toughest piece in our fitness equation. This is where I find that biggest inconsistency lies in most people. Some are good for 2-3 days, and then blow it for two days.

This vicious cycle will lead to frustration. Instead of following an extreme diet plan, I rather you follow a nutrition plan that is moderate and one you feel you can follow every day for most of the time. Find a plan that is filled with the healthy foods you like.

NO, this does not mean ice cream, BUT once in a long while, you can indulge and enjoy. Moderation is the key.

If you mess up and indulge in one or two of your meals, the day is not ruined, just start back to your diet for your next meal following.

Convenience is a big factor that affects the consistency of eating the right foods. I recommend you get in the habit of preparing your own meals ahead of time. This will eliminate the excuses of stopping off at a fast food place because you have nothing to eat. It will

eliminate the excuse for skipping a much-needed meal.

The best thing about preparing your meals is that you know exactly what you are eating, and have complete control of the food you eat.

To speed up the metabolism and to help recuperate from your training, try to eat 5-6 small meals per day. It takes a minimum of around two weeks of a consistent eating regime to start boosting your metabolism and making results as far as lean muscle gain and fat loss.

Supplement companies today make it very easy to hit all of your meals.

You can purchase a protein powder and protein bars. Again these help eliminate any excuse for not getting the proper nutrition your body needs.

I would still rather you eat whole foods, but something is better than nothing at all.

A consistent routine will take some time to develop.

After a couple of weeks, it will be part of your every day routine. Once you hit that level, it is smooth sailing, almost “auto-pilot.”

Sure, in the beginning it will be difficult at times to prepare all your meals, do all your cardio, and hit every training session.

You will get used to it, and there will come a point where you will not even think about it because it will be a consistent part of your daily routine. It is just a matter of convincing yourself that you can do it, and giving yourself time to get there. The more time you do it, the more confidence you will develop to stick with it. So please go out there and try your best— you owe it to yourself!

Celebrate the Season: Easter Prep and Meatless Dinners

There’s something so exciting about turning over the calendar page to March! Although the temperatures are still chilly and many times, the ground is covered in snow, March means springtime is just a few weeks away. March also means that Easter is right around the corner, and now is a great time to try a new way of decorating eggs and enjoy a tasty meal during Lent!

If you think the only way to decorate eggs involves vinegar and a box of egg dyeing tablets, think again!

You can take your egg decorating to the next level by learning a silk dyeing technique. Hit the thrift shop or dig through the back of a closet to find some 100 percent silk ties, scarves or shirts—the more vibrant and busy the pattern, the better!

You’ll also need a tightly woven white pillowcase, old sheet or t-shirt, white vinegar, twist ties or string, uncooked white eggs and a non-reactive pot.

Cut your silk ties, scarves or shirts into squares large enough to fit around the eggs. In the same way, cut the white fabric into squares large enough to fit around each egg. Smaller eggs are recommended, as they are easier to work with and require less fabric than large or extra-large eggs.

Wrap the eggs first in the silk, right side touching the egg. The right side is the printed side of the silk (usually the pattern/color is more vibrant). Make sure to wrap each egg tightly, as there should be as much silk touching the egg as possible. Next, wrap the white fabric around the silk covered eggs. Carefully use a string or twist tie to close the fabric shut.

Call Kathy for questions at (716) 863-8016 Once all the eggs are tied up in the silk and the white fabric, place them in the pot and cover them with water. Add ¼ cup of white vinegar. Bring to a boil, and then reduce the heat to simmer the eggs for at least 20 minutes. The longer the eggs simmer, the better— 35-40 minutes allows for better transfer (brighter and bolder) of the colors.

Remove the eggs from the water and allow them to cool. Save the silk scraps and white fabric. These can be used again; even though the silk won't transfer as boldly, the pattern will still be pretty. Once the eggs are cool enough to handle, unwrap them and see what colors and designs have transferred onto your eggs.

Part of the fun is finding out how each batch of eggs looks after using and reusing the silk!

Today is the third Friday of the season of Lent, the six weeks before Easter Sunday on April 1. If you’re looking for a tasty, easy meatless recipe this Friday (and are already tired of fish), try this slow cooker Mushroom Spinach Lasagna. Just 20 minutes of prep time goes into this easy meal that serves six and will be ready by the time you get home from

work.

Spray the inside of 4-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over mediumhigh heat. Add one 8-oz package of mushrooms; cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add one 6-oz package of baby spinach leaves; cook for 3 minutes more or until the mushrooms are tender and the spinach is wilted, stirring occasionally. Stir in 1 undrained can (14.5oz) of tomatoes with basil, garlic and oregano, 2 cups of tomato sauce, ½ teaspoon of Italian seasoning and ¼ teaspoon of salt. Bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and simmer for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, combine 1 (8oz) container of ricotta cheese, ¼ cup of grated Parmesan cheese and ¼ teaspoon of pepper in a small bowl; set aside.

Spread 1/3 of the sauce mixture over the bottom of 4-quart slow cooker.

Layer 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce mixture, breaking noodles to fit.

Top with another third of the sauce mixture, ricotta cheese mixture and 1 cup of shredded Italian cheese blend. Top with another third of the sauce mixture and 3 more lasagna noodles, breaking to fit.

Spoon any remaining sauce mixture over the noodles.

Cover; cook on “low” for 5 hours or until the noodles are tender. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup of Italian cheese and ¼ cup of grated Parmesan cheese. Cover; let stand for 5 minutes or until the cheese melts.

Repeat customers who keep coming back to purchase their favorite items and new customers who are discovering Kazoo II for the first time all agree the store is unique.

Owner Arleen Solly said when she moved her business across the street six years ago, the move gave her a chance to create a whole new store with a new look where customers still find unique, hand-picked items including home decor, folk art, jewelry, Americana and American Southwestern items, toys and a large children’s section stocked with books Solly hand-picked herself.

Everything has a story and Solly is happy to share details of the cultural selections with her customers. There is an entire area of the store devoted to beautiful handcrafted Mexican folk art. On the other side of the store, shoppers will see a wall area near the checkout counter covered with Milagros — meaning

Kazoo II Features Unique Finds from Around the World miracles — which are metal religious charms found in many areas in Latin America.

Solly, who makes her home in Colden, said she travels around the country in search of special items to carry in her store. She goes to trade shows all over the country, where she finds the biggest selection of merchandise to buy for her store.

“I pick things I think are appropriate and would appeal to my local customers, as well as those who are visiting from other areas,” she said. “Whatever I like, I buy to sell in my store.

I don’t buy something because it’s popular or a so called ‘hot item’ because I’m not trendy.

I really buy the kinds of things that touch me.”

When asked how she happened to open the first Kazoo II store in Ellicottville, Solly said a friend of hers bought the Kazoo Company in Eden and asked her to help on a consulting basis to restore the building and put in a little museum explaining how the kazoo was made,

along with a gift shop.

“When my friend suggested we expand the business, I told him I’d like to expand it in Ellicottville because my kids skied here,” she said.

“The storefront had a ‘for rent’ sign on it, so we rented it and Kazoo II was there for 20 years.”

Solly’s future plan is to retire at some point but, she said, she’s having fun right now. She loves the business, she loves going to the shows and buying, and she loves the people she works with.

“For right now, I have no desire to hang it up,” she said. “People kind of count on certain things we usually carry and I’m not going to be dramatically changing anything. I continue to evolve my store with what’s available and what I find. As I discover new and different things, I change it as I go along.”

A shorthanded Ellicottville team dropped its playoff opener, as Pine Valley built a 31-5 halftime lead, holding the Eagles to one point in the second quarter in a 50-19 Section 6 Class D quarterfinal loss.

Kayla Hohl led Pine Valley (14-7) with 21 points Thursday and Katelyn Miller added 13.

Evelyn Cortez had eight points for the Eagles (1011).

“We had three girls on a school trip to Costa Rica, another one on vacation,” explained Ellicottville coach Chad Bartoszek. “We were playing a little bit of half JV, half varsity.”

On Feb.18, U14/12/10/8 athletes traveled to Kissing Bridge for the annual Dual Slalom. This event is a paneled slalom meaning Giant Slalom gates are used.

There are two courses set side by side and athletes compete in a Shoot Out at the end to determine the Kings and Queens of the Mountain. This is by far one of the most exciting events for this age group all season.

The top eight U14s and U12s are chosen from the first two runs to compete.

U14 Girls: HoliMont’s Madalyn Cummings finished with the gold medal.

U14 Boys: Liam Ainslie of HoliMont took gold and was U14 King of the Mountain!

U12 Girls: Holiday Valley’s Charlotte Harter finished in 1st place and HoliMont’s Carissa Dunlap took 2nd and was U12 Queen of the Mountain!

Francesca Ferrara (HO) walked away with the rose gold and teammate Olivia Cummings finished 4th. Athletes then traveled to Snow Ridge Ski Resort in Turin, NY for the annual Silversmith Slalom Race on Feb. 18.

U21/19 Women: Katherine Wojnowski finished 12th.

U16 Women: Holiday Valley’s Lauren Thomas once again took gold and teammate Caroline DeRose finished 7th.

U16 Men: Ross Fuller of Holiday Valley finished 25th.

The following weekend U21/19/16 traveled to their New York State Championships.

U16s were at West Mountain in Queensbury, N.Y. for the first two days with a Slalom on Day 1 and a Giant Slalom Day 2. Day three was supposed to be a Super-G at Gore Mountain in North Creek, N.Y. Due to the downpour it was not safe to hold a Super-G and

even a Giant Slalom so the athletes competed in another Slalom. Much to their surprise the lift broke down and athletes were forced to “earn their turns” hiking up four times—two times to inspect and two times to race. This is just a testament to the strength, tenacity, will power and dedication that these athletes put into this sport.

Day 1 Women: Logan Fredrickson and Hayly Fredrickson of Holiday Valley took gold and silver, respectively. Amanda Arteaga (HO) finished 24th and Kate Carter (HO) 44th.

Day 1 Men: David Rintoul (HO) finished 19th and William Dunn (HV) 39th.

Day 2 Women: Holiday Valley’s Hayly Fredrickson finished 5th and sister/teammate Logan Fredrickson took 7th. Caroline DeRose (HO) finished 12th, Kate Masliwec (HO) 15th, Amanda Arteaga (HO) 35th, Rory Sauereisen (HO) 36th, Megan Peters (HO) 43rd, Kate Carter (HO) 48th and Brooke Willer (HV) 60th.

Day 2 Men: Ross Fuller of Holiday Valley took 16th, Mitchell Azcarate (HV) 18th, David Rintoul (HO) 21st, Alexander Wojnowski (HV) 26th and William Dunn (HV) 38th.

Day 3 Women: Lauren Thomas, Logan Fredrickson and Hayly Fredrickson of Holiday Valley took 4th, 5th and 7th respectively and Rory Sauereisen (HV) finished 39th.

Day 3 Men: David Rintoul (HO) placed 19th, Ross Fuller (HV) 30th, Alexander Wojnowski (HV) 34th, Mitch Azcarate (HV) 40th and William Dunn (HV) 54th.

Next week we will announce the athletes that qualified for either Eastern Championships or Eastern Finals.

U21/19 athletes were at Gore Mountain for a three-day series as well.

Day 1 was two Super-Gs, Day 2 was a Giant Slalom and Day 3 was a Slalom at West Mountain. The U19/21 athletes did not have it as hard as the U16s but the weather brought the warrior out in each athlete with complete downpour for the first run and freeze over for the second.

Day 1 Race 2 Women: Taylor Hubert (HV) finished 7th, Katherine Wojnowski (HV) 10th and Phoebe Dunn (HV) took 21st.

Day 2 Men: Nathan Briselden (HV) continued his streak with another gold medal. Maxxon Solly of HoliMont took 5th. Nolan Evans of Holiday Valley finished 16th, Joshua Allegra (HV) 22nd and Connor Galton (HV) 32nd.

Day 2 Women: Zoe Knauss (HO), Katherine Wojnowski (HV) and Taylor Hubert took 4th, 5th and 6th respectively. Phoebe Dunn of Holiday Valley finished 25th.

Day 3 Men: Maxxon Solly of HoliMont continued his success finishing in 4th place! Joshua Allegra (HV) took 15th.

Day 3 Women: Taylor Hubert of Holiday Valley finished 14th.

The Eastern Finals Team will be announced in next weeks paper along with results from the U12/10/8 race that was held at HoliMont on Feb. 25th.

The U14 State Team will include the following athletes: Ladies: Madalyn Cummings, Simona Muscarella, Isabella Stringer, Mary Catherine Mangan, Charleigh Priestman, Brianne Allegra, Alexandra Smillie, Cece Carls, Brooklyn Napolitano, Leah Smillie, Gianna Ferrara, Megan Kelsch, Megan Williams, Sarah Kelly, Heather Dunlap, Sophia Gambino, Molly Basadur and Claire Rintoul.

The $50 ticket prices includes snowshoe rental (donated by Ellicottville’s City Garage), piping hot chili, cookies and snacks, a moonlit snowshoe tour and live music. All funds raised from the event will go toward general operations of the park and trail maintenance.

“We will do two tours.

One will be a novice snowshoe tour and will go from the gate house, smooth walks, to the pond and upper hill. The second tour will be for more experienced snowshoers

and will include all of the above as well as hiking to the upper hill where our annual concerts are held including a view of the tower!” explained Nila Griffis, executive director of the Ashford Hollow Foundation, who operates Griffis Sculpture Park.

“Our guides, including Mark Griffis, tell some fantastic stories along the way of how the sculptures were created.”

Some of the path will also be lit with lights from Doug Sitler at Night Lights HQ, who stages the Night Lights display in the fall at

the park.

Following the tour, guests will enjoy food and merriment back at the property’s gate house. “We have a great band this year called DangerBird which will be playing classic rock,” Griffis noted.

Boardroom Banked Slalom March 4

Snowboarding will be celebrated this weekend at Holiday Valley with a new event presented by The Boardroom.

The inaugural Boardroom Banked Slalom, a fun event that will allow for riders of all ages to take to the course, is scheduled for Sunday, March 4 on Holiday Valley’s Independence Run, ending at the base of Yodeler.

“It’s going to be a fun event and we’re really excited,” said Spencer Timkey of The Boardroom.

“Holiday Valley is so good at hosting events and really making them pop.”

Some snowboarding fanatics may be familiar with the Mt. Baker Banked Slalom in Washington state, one of the country’s largest such events that has been held for more than 30 years.

There are also similar events on the east coast in Vermont and West Virginia, for example.

“We wanted to do something to celebrate snowboarding, but also to create an event that would put Holiday Valley and The

Boardroom on the map on the east coast,” Timkey said, noting Ellicottville’s location on the western edge of the east coast.

“We are going to try and draw some of those people to come to Ellicottville and say ‘this town is super cool, this shop is super cool and this resort is unbelievable, so we want to come back,’” he said.

The concept of the event is simple: allow snowboarders a course to slalom on large banks of snow, as the title suggests.

It’ll be laid back with four divisions — men’s and women’s opens, grom (children 15 and younger) and OG (original gangster, or 35 and older).

“A mom and a dad and a son or daughter can ride,” Timkey said. “It can be a family thing.”

The course promises to be an attraction on its own.

“We are going to make this a really fun course,” Timkey said. “There are some things we are thinking of that are going to be really cool and to make it really fun and unique to Holiday

Valley, but also safe enough so there is no issue of serious injury.”

Dummies should be mounted to skis or a snowboard and may not be living or breathing. Winners are determined by audience applause, so be creative!
