February break is here, and if you’re not headed some place sunny with the kids, take this time to enjoy WNY and all it has to offer during this mid-winter recess.

HV Freestyle Team

It was a great weekend of competition for the Holiday Valley Freestyle Team. The Eastern Qualifying Series continued at Buffalo Ski Club with a mogul event on Saturday and two aerial events on Sunday.

HVFT had a strong showing, highlighted by seven team members finishing in the top 10 overall. For the girls, Brooke Butler led the way with a third-place finish, followed closely by Ashley Hubert in fourth and Zoe Schaab in fifth. The boys were led by Will Hamilton, who finished second overall for the day.

Also cracking the top 10 were Bennett Socha in sixth, Matt LaRusch in eighth and Liam Perry in 10th.

In the age groups, secondplace finishes went to Brooke Butler (F13) and Ashley

Hubert (F15), while Zoe Schaab came away with third (F13). Leading the way for the boys and taking the win in their age groups were Chris Edwards (M9) and Will Hamilton (M15).

Liam Perry had a secondplace finish in the M17 age group and Bennett Socha was third in the M13 group.

Two aerial events were held Sunday and Brooke Butler, Zoe Schaab and Caleb Darnley each finished in the top 10 in both events.

In the first event, Brooke had a fourth-place result and Zoe finished in eighth for the girls, while Caleb finished seventh. In the second event, Zoe took fourth and Brooke took eighth. Caleb improved from the first event and just missed the podium, finishing fourth. The second

event also saw Sarah Barnum getting into the top 10 with a 10th place result.

Ella LaRusch had a great day and took home victories in both events in the F9 age group. Also reaching the podium for the girls were Brooke Butler and Zoe Schaab. Brooke took second in the first event for the F13 while Zoe had a third-place finish in the second event for the F13.

The second event proved to be good for the boys, as Matt LaRusch, Ronan Donnelly and Caleb Darnley all made it onto the podium in their age groups. In the M13 division Matt took second and Ronan took third while in the M17 division Caleb finished in third place.

Celebrate Winter: Winter Break Edition

During the last few weeks of winter, cabin fever may seem unavoidable, especially during winter break! Even if you’re not spending the week enjoying warmer weather down south, there are still plenty of ways to have fun, keep warm and make some tasty treats.

“This weather is for the birds!” It’s a phrase sometimes grumbled by Western New Yorkers, who are still trying to survive the final, disenchanting weeks of winter. However, even the birds who stick around here for the winter may be about ready to fly south this time of year.

Help them out and have fun in the kitchen with these homemade birdseed ornaments!

Before getting started, cut several lengths of twine (5 to 6 inches long) to hang the ornaments and set aside. In a large bowl, mix 4 cups of birdseed with ¾ cup of flour. In a separate bowl, add a packet of gelatin to ½ cup of hot water. Whisk until the gelatin is dissolved, and add 3 tablespoons of corn syrup to the mixture. Pour the gelatin mixture over the birdseed mixture and stir until moistened.

Spray a muffin tin with non-stick cooking spray. Spoon the bird seed mixture into the tin, filling about ¼ of the way full. Fold the twine in half and place in each muffin cup. Next, spoon enough birdseed mixture into each cup until half way full, covering the twine.

After two hours, carefully remove the birdseed muffins from the tin. Allow to harden on wax paper for 24 to 48 hours before hanging outside.

When it comes to making a tasty, savory lunch, let your slow cooker do all the work. This vegetarian-friendly loaded baked potato soup is sure to please the whole family (if you want, add a few bacon crumbles to please the meat-lovers).

Place five medium russet potatoes (peeled and chopped into ½-inch cubes), ½ cup of finely diced celery, a medium diced onion, and three cloves of minced garlic in a slow cooker. Add 3 cups of vegetable broth, ¼ cup of butter, 1 teaspoon of salt and a pinch of black pepper. Set the slow cooker to high and cook for 4 hours or put it on the low setting for 8 hours.

If you prefer a smooth soup, use a potato masher or immersion blender to blend the potatoes. For a chunky soup, use a wooden spoon to partially mash the potatoes. Stir in ½ cup of grated parmesan cheese, ½ cup of grated sharp cheddar cheese, ¼ teaspoon

of garlic powder and ¼ teaspoon of red pepper flakes. Serve with a dollop of sour cream, chopped green onions, more grated cheddar cheese or whatever toppings you like!

While the soup is cooking, make dessert with the kids: Oatmeal Bear Cookies are as fun to make as they are to eat! In a medium bowl, beat ½ cup of softened butter, ½ cup of sugar and ½ cup of brown sugar on medium speed until blended. Beat in one egg; stir in ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract. In a small bowl, stir together 1 cup of flour, ½ teaspoon of baking soda, ½ teaspoon of salt and ¾ teaspoon of cinnamon. Add to the butter mixture and blend until just mixed. Stir in 1 ½ cups of quick-cooking oats until blended.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Use some of the dough to shape into six 1 ¼ inch balls for the bear heads and set aside. Using the rest of the dough, shape three ½ inch balls for the ears and snout for each bear head (18 total). Roll a third of these in sugar and set aside. Flatten the cookie dough heads with the bottom of a glass.

Place three of the smaller cookie dough balls on each head, making the ears and the snout (use the sugar-rolled dough for the snout). Carefully flatten the ears and snout of each bear. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned.

Place 1 chocolate candy on the snout for the nose and 2 mini chocolate candies for the eyes. Let cool and enjoy!

September 1988. The program was started to honor Bill Lounsbury, who was a member of the Holiday Valley Ski Patrol.

He lost a leg to cancer in 1982, but that didn’t stop him from pursuing his love of skiing. Bill taught himself to ski on one leg, and his courage and love of skiing was an inspiration to many. After Bill lost his battle with cancer, the first pieces of adaptive equipment for the program were purchased using donations sent to the Holiday Valley Ski Patrol in Bill’s memory.

The Pengiun Paddle soon came about and its origins goes like this: In the 1980s, Emily Eckley, Karen Lowe and Connie Velotta were great supporters of the ‘skiers’ lifestyle’ and also great supporters of the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program. The trio and their friends from Cleveland, Buffalo, and many other places, began a series of après ski parties in the spring that often led to “penguin slides” down Yodeler in front of the ski patrol building.

In 1990, Eckley, having realized the need for more formal organization, became the first chairman

of the Penguin Paddle, as it had come to be known, and the event was literally off and running.

Over the years, the LASP has grown to 40 instructors who work together to teach more than 250 lessons during the course of a single ski season.

These dedicated volunteer instructors are trained in adaptive ski methods, and more than half of the instructors are certified by the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA).

The LASP aims to deemphasize the disability.

According to Holiday Valley’s web site, the program is described as offering “lessons to persons with virtually all disabilities, both physical and cognitive. Each student is instructed individually with full emphasis on his/her ability, rather than disability. Some of our more frequently encountered disabilities are spinal cord injuries, Downs Syndrome, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, visual impairment, autism and developmental delay.

Results vary, however most are rather outstanding and many students gain new

confidence to tackle other activities. The program runs from Dec. 26 through mid-March.”

ASP also offers miles of groomed cross-country trails for XC skiing in the Art Roscoe trails system.

ECS NEWS ECS Boasts Another Week of Successes

Though Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter, ECS is on a hot streak that might just melt the snow. On Jan. 30, the varsity boys’ basketball team played at home against Franklinville.

Matching each other point for point, our boys closed the gap and beat the Panthers 59 to 58. Dave McCann, the coach, was very proud.

“The boys showed a great deal of effort and energy in the game against Franklinville….They showed a lot of toughness and heart in the victory,” he said when asked how he felt about coaching this successful team.

“At the end of the game, Griffin [Chudy] made two unbelievable plays to win us the game. He has been one of our most consistent players this season, and he showed that in this game.”

In addition, senior Elliot Bowen passed the 1,000 rebound milestone for his career.

“This is an outstanding accomplishment for a high school player,” said McCann. “‘Rebound is about hustle and heart’ is a message we preach to kids. Yes, Elliot is tall, but he puts himself in a great position both offensively and defensively. He also currently has 1,529 points for Ellicottville. Elliot is one of the most coachable and likable players on the team. It has been a pleasure to be on the sideline and watch his growth and development. He is very deserving of all the accolades he receives.”

When asked how he felt about decimating another record, Elliot didn’t forget to be a team player. “It feels good because of all the hard work I put in,” said the 6’6” senior, “but I couldn’t have done it without buddies finding me on the court.” The team’s sense of drive, unity and hustle pushed it to have one of Ellicottville’s most

On a more academic note, the ECS Quiz Bowl team participated in Portville’s Scholastic Challenge on Feb. 3.

Undefeated for the first three events, they met their match with West Valley, losing by 20 points —a single question. Said question is memorable in its hilarity: “Who is the chef in the movie ‘Ratatouille’?” Because of its ambiguity—there are, of course, multiple chefs in the movie—West Valley was returned the lost points. “We’re going to boycott the movie,” joked Parker Rieman, after the event. “None of us can watch it again.” The team, comprised of Alex Hunt (9th gr.), Madisyn Kilby (10th gr.), Louisa Benatovich (11th gr.), Kirklind Kaleta (12th gr.), and Parker Rieman (12th gr.), is in good spirits and ready for their next competition at JCC on Feb. 15.

That evening, the junior class put on its annual Winter Weekend dance.

After weeks of planning, all the details melded into one magnificent event.

Along with the timeless winter wonderland theme, the music and dancing made it truly memorable.

“I felt that the dance was a success,” said junior class president, Meganne Chapman. “It seemed

like everyone had a good time. We had balloon arches along the ceiling that looked really cool.

We overcame an obstacle of the music not working.

Overall, the dance was fun.” Those who stayed until the end even got to take home some of the balloon arches skillfully made by class advisor, Mr. Matt Finn.

On Feb. 7, the PTO hosted the “2018 Lip Sync and Talent Show.”

Open to elementary-aged students in grades 4-8, the show hosted a variety of original acts. HoliMont’s Mangan Continued from front page

Tricia Mangan’s path to PyeongChang is not your typical U.S. Olympic Alpine Ski Team story. It begins not on mountains, but on hills in Western New York at HoliMont, which features a mere 700-foot vertical drop.

The Buffalo native had her first race at the age of two on the HoliMont bunny hill against her twin brother, William. A competitive fire was lit that day, along with a love of going fast on a pair of skis.

That fire fueled her rise through the ranks of the U.S. Alpine Ski Team – making the D team in 2016, the C Team in 2017, and a World Cup debut in the Giant Slalom at Killington, Vermont, last November.

It didn’t dim even when she was left off the 2018 Olympic Team in early January. She went out the very next week and earned her first World Cup points in the Alpine Combined at Lenzerheide, Switzerland.

She was the second American finisher behind only world champion

Lindsey Vonn. Her determination and ability to overcome disappointment was rewarded when she was elevated to the Olympic Team on Feb. 6 after an injury to teammate Jackie Wiles.

Resilience and determination is a trait that runs in the Mangan family.

In December 2016, Tricia’s younger brother Andrew broke his C5 vertebrae in a freak accident that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. Through prayers, grace, and relentless effort, Andrew has had an incredible recovery. A top skier and rower himself, Andrew walked out of the spinal rehabilitation hospital using crutches just 70 days after his accident, and is back in the water and on the slopes.

Andrew is in PyeongChang to cheer his sister on.

In addition to her World Cup racing, Tricia is studying biomedical engineering at Dartmouth and when she's lucky enough to be home, she loves spending time with her five siblings

and parents, playing a variety of sports, engaging in heated debates, and exploring the great outdoors.

She is only the second female from Western New York to make the U.S. Olympic Alpine Ski Team, joining 1994 Super G gold medalist Diann Roffe. At 20 years old, she is also the youngest ever to compete in the Olympics. Proud parents David and Martha Mangan are about to see the competitive fire that they lit 18 years ago turn into an Olympic flame.

Village Planning Board: Lot Line Approved

The January 2018 meeting of the Village of Ellicottville Planning Board (VPB) opened with the public hearing for a single family residence to be located at 27 Adams St. Single family residences are an allowable in the Village Residential District.

The front set back has been reduced to 20 feet from 25 feet with an area variance. Side variances have been met. This will be 4,513 square feet with an attached garage and two lock out rooms above the garage. This is a Type 2 Action under the State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR). The two lockout rooms are allowed with a Special Use Permit. The project will undergo Site Plan Review and Architectural Design Review as well.

Village Planner Gary Palumbo noted that the village engineer has yet to review the site plan in detail. The engineer on the project, Aaron Tiller, spoke about the French drainage system that will be installed and will go to a leaching chamber that will slowly release the water into the soil. This will take care of road and roof run off.

Robert Brogcinski, a resident of Madison Street, spoke about his concerns of the run off and how it will affect Madison Street residents, stating when the other houses on Adams Street were built it created problems for both himself and his neighbors. Tiller advised that he conducted several test pits on the site to see where the water table was and, because of this, the home will actual forgo a basement and all water for that lot will be handled by the drainage system. He had concerns on the size of the house and the VPB assured him that albeit the lot irregular in shape, it is much larger than most village lots and the requirements have been met.

Paul Sustronk, the owner of the lot and future home, stated that he by no means wants to infringe on the other properties and he had the water neutral system designed so that there is no impact to neighboring lots.

The VPB made a motion to close the public hearing; there was a second and it was approved.

The VPB opened the meeting with a motion to approve the January 2018 minutes; there was a second and the minutes were

approved.

First on the agenda was a Minor Lot Line Adjustment.

A total of 2.6 feet by 25 feet — approximately 67 square feet — will be transferred from 14 Monroe St. to 32 Washington St. to accommodate an exhaust fan that overhangs the zero lot line. This does not create a new lot, does not violate any zoning laws and will not create any non-conforming lots.

This is a Type 2 Action under SEQR and requires no further consideration.

There was a motion to approve the Minor Lot Line Adjustment; a second and it was approved.

In old business, there was discussion regarding 27 Adams St. The VPB made a motion to table this matter pending the village engineer’s review of the drainage plan; there was a second and it was tabled until the March 2018 meeting.

In new business, an application for an accessory apartment at 3 Washington St. was reviewed. This second-floor accessory apartment is an allowable use with a Special Use Permit. There will be a 5-foot-by-5-foot concrete pad in the rear on the

building where the exterior staircase to the second floor will land. All set backs have been met, building height will not change and there will be a deck on the top of the first floor. Floor-to-area ratios have been satisfied and does not exceed 1.5.

There is no additional square footage being added. All architectural preservation standards have been met.

A question was raised about the distance from the edge of the property line to the staircase. New to-scale drawings have been requested. There will need to be a coordinated review with Department of Transportation and Village Board for SEQR. The application was deemed complete and there was a motion to set a public hearing for the March 2018 meeting at 5:30 p.m.; there was a second and the public hearing was set.

There was a motion to adjourn the meeting; a second and the meeting was adjourned.

The next meeting of the Village Planning Board will be held at 5:30 p.m. March 13 at the Village Hall.

DiPasquale Appointed Deputy Mayor

The February meeting of the Village Board (VB) opened with good news that the new Sidewalk Plow will be here on Feb. 16.

Next, there was a motion to approve the minutes from the January 2018 regular meeting; there was a second and they were approved.

There was a motion to accept the January Financial Report and Audit of Claims; there was a second and it was accepted.

Business from the floor there was an offer and presentation from Casella to lock in the village refuse rate as it is today for the next two years, which would start June 1. The VB has until the May 2018 meeting to decide.

In the mayor’s report, there was discussion on a new Sidewalk Plowing Agreement that is being

drafted by the village attorney. Mayor John Burrell attended the New York Conference of Mayors (NYCOM) Convention, where he was appointed to the Municipal Finance Committee. This is one of four new committees formed by NYCOM in hopes of getting more involvement. These committees will meet four times per year.

There was a motion to accept the Planning Report; there was a second and it was approved. There was discussion regarding the proposed zoning amendments and Village Planner Gary Palumbo asked that the VB review the other proposed changes that were presented. The sign requirements are not being amended now, per the special meeting regarding signs that was held in January.

Mark Chudy of the Department of Public Works advised that they have mapped out which

sidewalks need to be fixed this spring and they have picked up cold patch to address some of the potholes that have gotten out of hand. There was a motion to accept the DPW report; there was a second and it was accepted.

There was a motion to accept the Engineering Report; there was a second and it was accepted.

There was a motion to accept the Sewer Report; there was a second and it was accepted. Jigger Stokes will be retiring in October 2018 and VB members are thankful to have time to replace him, as there are many State Requirements that must be completed for his replacement.

There was a motion to accept the Code Enforcement Report; there was a second and it was accepted.

Next, there was a concern with parking down Monroe Street between Martha and Rockwell streets. There was a motion made to post

no parking signs down the east side of Monroe until permanent ones can be put up; there was a second and it was approved.

Village Clerk Mary Klahn advised there are five meters left to be installed out of the 1,952 and is happy to have this project almost complete, as it will make reading the meters much more time and cost effective.

In old business, there was a motion to set a Public Hearing Regarding Local Law #1 for year 2018 to remove the High Consumption Rate for Water and Sewer. It will be held at the March meeting at 6 p.m.

There was a motion to adjourn the meeting; there was a second and it was approved.

The next meeting of the Village Board will be at 6 p.m. March 12 at the Village Hall.Last, Joseph DiPasquale Village Trustee has been appointed as Deputy Mayor.

Great Valley Town Board Continues Tax Talks

The Great Valley Town Board continued talks on how to handle the 20 percent increase town residents recently found in their tax bills.

At Monday night’s meeting, the board further discussed two possible solutions first brought up at a special meeting last month: either issuing local tax rebates this summer or decreasing town taxes next winter.

The board scheduled a special meeting for March 5 to make a final decision and get the approved plan underway.

Daniel Martonis, director of the Cattaraugus County Office of Real Property Tax Services, and Andrew Toth and Andrew Moon, accountants from Tronconi, Segarra and Associates, attended the meeting to answer any questions either the board or public had.

“I know what I think I want to do,” said Town Supervisor Daniel Brown.

“I’d have to hear other ideas, whether it be from (Martonis, Toth or Moon) to change my mind. But I want to know what the board wants to do.”

Instead of using an estimate county officials

were developing for the county budget in 2017 — about $490,000 — the town underestimated the amount of local sales tax that would be available, using about $75,000 to reduce the town tax levy.

While town taxes decreased slightly, residents’ county tax bills rose sharply. The increase on a $100,000 property was up to $300.

The increase in county taxes was supposed to mirror a decrease in the town tax levy as the town chose to apply its share of county sales taxes to the town taxes instead of the county tax levy. Twentynine other towns do it that way.

It was the first year the town had decided to take the sales tax in cash. The intent was to decrease town taxes while allowing county taxes to increase by a similar amount.

Board member Gerald Musall said he thinks the board led the public to believe the town would pursue the rebates. He said he knew it wouldn’t be a quick or easy fix, but he would like to stick with it.

“I don’t want to play this game of waiting until the end of the year with getting

people back their money they’ve overpaid,” he said.

“I just want to get it back to them.”

Board member Sandra Goode said she thinks there are still a lot of unknowns the board should look at before making a final decision, including the specifics of what issuing the checks would involve as well as cost.

“I think the process that we’re in right now is to evaluate the different paths that we have,” board member Becky Kruszynski added. “With the scope going forward, evaluate just what it’s going to cost us, what all does it entail, how much additional work and when or if they’ll be able to be reimbursed or rebated.”

Martonis said if the town decided to pursue the rebate option, residents would only receive back a percentage of what they overpaid because about 17 percent had already been set aside to reduce the town tax levy. He said it would be nearly impossible to go back and find out exactly what each resident would have paid if the town had made a different decision.

“I was looking at the one time the state did this

before … and they figure out it was like 63 percent, because they didn’t want to go overboard,” Martonis said. In order to give a certain percentage rebate, a law would have to be approved by the state.

Brown said he thinks the town should look at fixing it by reducing the incoming tax bills this year and have residents pay substantially lower taxes next year. He said he’s talked to over 30 Great Valley residents and most of them said they’d prefer lower taxes next year.

“It’s going to cost money to give money back, and it’s only going to be a percentage of that refund anyway,” Brown said.

“If we fix this with our incoming tax bill, then our town tax rate could go to near-zero.”

When residents in attendance at the meeting were asked what they thought, two said they’d prefer the rebates in the summer and three said they’d prefer the lower taxes next year.

A special meeting of the Great Valley Town Board is scheduled for Monday, March 5 at 7 p.m. at the town hall to make a final decision on what to do.

Tim and Bonnie’s Pizza, EVL Bowling Still on a Roll

The National Comedy Center is proud to announce the acquisition of the archive of groundbreaking comedian Shelley Berman, who passed away in September 2017 at the age of 92. The donation was formally announced during a tribute attended

by Larry David, Dr. Demento, Cheryl Hines, Laraine Newman, Howard Storm, David Steinberg, Fred Willard, and Alan Zweibel, hosted by Lewis Black and presented by the National Comedy Center on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at the Comedy & Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, Calif.

The Berman archive is the latest acquisition for the National Comedy Center, the first non-profit cultural institution and national-scale visitor experience dedicated to the art of comedy, which already houses a number of archival pieces including the 25,000-piece George Carlin collection, donated in 2017.

In production now in Lucille Ball’s hometown of Jamestown the National Comedy Center fulfills Ball’s vision to establish a center that celebrates comedy in all of its forms, educating and engaging visitors with the story of the art form and its artists.

The National Comedy Center is slated to host its ribbon cutting Aug. 1-4, 20 during its annual Lucille Ball Comedy Festival.

“No longer the step child to the arts, comedy and those who make us laugh are about to have their own place in the world. When I found myself surrounded by all of Shelley's writings, I wondered what to do with all of it. Do I give it to some museum where they let it gather dust before they throw it away?

Along came the National Comedy Center, driven by people who have the vision to know that this material and the material of other comedians has a value. They are dedicated to preserving all for their archives and for future generations who may want to know about those who gave us the gift of laughter.

I feel confident that all of Shelley's fine work will be in good hands,” said Sarah Berman, Shelley’s wife of more than 70 years.

The archive was carefully collected and stored in Berman’s home office for seven decades,

and spans from the 1940s to the 2010s. It includes hundreds of photographs, contracts, scripts, calendars, scrapbooks, correspondences and rare footage and audio chronicling his wideranging career in standup, improv, television, film, theater and comedy writing.

Included in the gift are Berman’s consecutive Gold Records for his two landmark 1959 albums Inside Shelley Berman and Outside Shelley Berman, the first of which was the comedy album first to win a Grammy. Also included is the trademark stool on which he performed his classic routines during live engagements across the country.

Berman’s unique brand of anxiety-ridden observational humor helped to redefine stand-up comedy in the late 1950s and ‘60s. He continued to be a favorite with audiences in his later years for his Emmy-nominated portrayal of Larry David’s father, Nat, on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.

“Berman had changed the face of stand-up comedy. What I feel helped inform me as a comic, was the precision in his language. You had someone who was this terrific actor doing comedy, and that’s rare,” said event host Lewis Black.

Fred Willard echoed Black’s sentiment. “Shelley Berman came along with that whole new wave of comedy. It forever changed the way we look at standup comedy.”

Kelly Carlin further added, “My father looked up to Shelley Berman. He appreciated Shelley’s use of words and his gift for story-telling. And I can tell you, my dad would be thrilled to know that Shelley’s papers will be sitting next to his in Jamestown.”

Executive Director of the National Comedy Center, Journey Gunderson, concluded the event by saying, “Shelley Berman was there at the very beginning of what we call modern day stand-up comedy. We are so honored that Sarah has chosen the National Comedy Center as the institution to house Shelley’s archive, and has trusted us to preserve and celebrate his legacy.”

Nothing goes together better than pizza and bowling. With that in mind, owners Tim and Bonnie Garey have two pizzeria/bowling alley combo businesses — one in Springville and one in Ellicottville.

The couple opened their Springville business nearly a decade ago, where they have a 12-lane bowling alley attached to their pizzeria. They opened the second business in EVL Square at Bristol Lane in November 2012. Like the Springville location, the pizzeria and bowling alley are also attached and easily accessible to each other for the convenience of customers. Each location has 20-25 employees.

Their daughter, Tiffany Frentz, who is the general manager, said business is going well, especially in winter because people can only ski for so long.

She said business can sometimes be hit or miss, even when there is lack of snow.

“The pizza/bowling combination has worked

out great at both locations.

It’s definitely nice when it goes hand-in-hand.

When people bowl, they usually want something to eat or snack on,” she said. “Sometimes it’s vice versa because they think they are just stopping in to have something to eat and discover there is also something to do.”

Although Ellicottville is a resort town, the pizza and bowling business there is not necessarily busier. Frentz said their Springville location definitely stays busier all year-round because there is a higher residential population and they get a lot of parties.

“Every year, we have a group that does a Daytona 500 party so, yes, we get a lot of different kinds of parties out there, as opposed to our Ellicottville location where we’re getting mostly the families that are on vacation or are up for the weekend kind of thing,” she said.

Frentz said the Ellicottville menu has expanded quite a bit since they first opened. They now

offer fish fries every day of the week and have added broiled fish to the menu.

Other recent additions include some sandwich options: a fish sandwich, a big cheeseburger sandwich, a chicken breast sandwich and their big seller, the roast beef on kimmelweck.

All salads are homemade and fresh.

The EVL bowling alley has eight state-of-the-art lanes and a video arcade that the family tries to keep fresh by taking out the less popular video games and bringing in new ones to try to change it up a bit.

Tim and Bonnie really know the pizza business and have been at it for a long time. Frentz said it’s probably been about 40 years, if not longer, because her father was making pizza way before she was born. He’s been making pizzas since about the age of 14.

You’ve probably heard the terms—telemark skiing, freeheeling, teleskiing – they all mean the same thing, but what exactly is that?

In a nutshell, telemark skiing utilizes a different boot and binding than traditional downhill skiing, and the major difference is that the heel is free and able to lift off the ski. Telemark skiing is a versatile skiing style that allows the freedom to ski both at the resorts and in the backcountry, with the idea that free heels allow for easy climbing and open possibilities for efficient touring.

Winter Music Jam Debuts Feb. 23-24

The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce has announced last week the newest music festival to hit Ellicottville.

Winter Music Jam will bring another full lineup of live music to town Feb. 23-24.

“With the success of Winter Blues Weekend, we spoke to all of our music venues and asked if they would like to do another event,” explained Brian McFadden, Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director. “It would be a shame, with all of the great entertainment in the Village, that we wouldn’t find a way to capitalize on it. 700 Club Fundraiser On March 3

On March 3, The Ken Brown 700 Club will hold its annual fundraising luncheon and auction to raise money for local charities. There's nothing like the smell of sausages and barbecue mingling with the whoosh of passing skiers.

The luncheon will be held at noon at the Pavilion by Yodeler Lodge at Holiday Valley.

The auctions will be both live and silent, with bidders competing to buy many valuable items relating to skiing or Ellicottville. Money raised will be donated to several local deserving organizations. They include The Ellicottville Memorial Library, Ellicottville Family Charities, The Alley Katz, The Cattaraugus County SPCA, the Arboretum, Almost Home Animal Sanctuary, and the Ellicottville Recreational Trail. Last year, the group's donations totaled more than $9,000. So on March 3, bring your appetite and some spare cash and join the 700 Club for a lovely lunch and a fun and lively auction. A $10 donation is required for your lunch ticket. Lots of food, desserts, drinks, and raffles will provide the merriment.

Membership in Ken Brown's 700 Club has simple requirements: You must be 70 or about to be 70, (hence the 700 in the name). Still being an active skier is optional.

The group has been

holding the luncheon/ auction for about as long as anybody can remember, and over the years has donated almost $70,000 local charities. That's a lot of goodwill.

Ken Brown started the 700 Club in 2000 just prior to his 70th birthday.

Known for his sense of humor and outrageous sense of style, Ken formed the club with friends who

shared his generosity.

Originally, the club had just a handful of members, but almost 20 years later the group has swelled to about 80 members. All of them take the group's motto seriously, "help us help others." Anyone interested in donating an item for the auction should call Ron Moro 699-2061 of Dave Jones 699-8335.

ASP Ski Patrol Hosts 2018 Nordic Fest

Telemark Day. The event, which takes place annually during the first Saturday in March, is celebrated worldwide.

According to the event’s Facebook page, the day was “Inspired by the need for telemarkers to have their own day of celebration and founded by Telemark Skier Magazine, World Telemark Day gives skiers the opportunity to come together to celebrate freeing one’s mind by freeing their heels.”

Allegany State Park’s Nordic Ski Patrol last weekend hosted the Eastern Division of the National Ski Patrol’s Nordic Fest at Camp Allegany.

Nordic members of the National Ski Patrol are hardy, dedicated volunteers who monitor cross-country ski and mountain biking trails across the United States, keeping people safe and rescuing them in times of need.

Mary MacQueen, director and instructor for the ASP’s Nordic Ski Patrol, said this is the first time the event has taken place at the park and hosted

by ASP Nordic Patrol. The Nordic Fest takes place somewhere in the eastern division every three years and consists of backcountry skiing, also known as cross-country skiing. She said the park is appealing to other patrollers from around the division because of its close proximity to Lake Erie with its lake effect snow.

“Every year, the ski patrols are required to do an ‘On the Hill Refresher.’

This event was our patrol’s annual refresher. However, we also hosted this annual refresher and educational opportunity for the rest of the divisions,” she said.

According to MacQueen, who is one of 11 Nordic Masters within the National Ski Patrol, six of those Nordic Masters were in attendance at this event.

She said 40 members from as far south as Virginia and north to Maine registered this year to take a number of different clinics of their choice.

“Ski Skills and Emergency Sled Building are the two mandatory clinics that Nordic patrollers have to take every year. They have to learn how to build a sled out of their skis and the equipment they have in their backpack,” she said.

“It’s not like an Alpine slope where you can just call and have them send up a snowmobile with a toboggan behind it to transport the person. The Nordic ski patroller has to get the injured person out of the area themselves.”

MacQueen said the training ski patrollers get in first aid is similar to the training of an EMT. In addition, they also have to spend a whole winter season learning how to do those skills on a slippery slope.

Other clinics included Map and Compass, Emergency Shelters, Instructor Development, Nordic Ski Waxing, Fire

Building and Outdoor Cooking, Avalanche Transceivers, Nordic Ski Enhancement and Emergency Sled Building.

One of the biggest draws to this year’s event was the Nordic ski instructor who came from the Professional Ski Instructors of America to teach the ski enhancement segment. MacQueen said the park was nice enough to groom a half-mile long track for the event at Camp Allegany, which was a huge help.

According to MacQueen, Nordic ski patrollers from all over the eastern and central divisions, as well as the southern division, are drawn to the event because the Nordic program of the National Ski Patrol is the fastest growing aspect of the ski patrol. She said there was a 66-percent increase in the number of new patrols that were started last year alone.

“The reason for this increase is the ski patrol isn’t just ski patrolling anymore,” she said. “Now, they are also patrolling mountain bike trails and they do a lot of other things, in addition to the winter activities.”

There’s potential for people getting injured in places like Allegany State Park that have mountain biking in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter. MacQueen said having the National Ski

Patrol is a “feather in the cap’” for an area because to be able to say the area is patrolled by the National Ski Patrol makes people feel safer and gets more visitors to the areas.

MacQueen, who works as a deputy for the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, said she started the ASP Ski Patrol in 2002 and recruited the original five patrol members. The group currently has 16 patrollers on the roster.

“Nordic people are like a big family. There’s a lot of camaraderie and shared interests in the group,” she said. “We all know each other; we’re all of the same mindset and love the outdoors.”

According to MacQueen, the ASP Nordic Patrol has always been a National Ski Patrol in the Nordic aspect, which is also known as backcountry. She said the National Ski Patrol has been around since 1938 and is the “gold standard” for a ski area to have because the training is top-notch. It about 48,000 members across the U.S. and there are also European divisions, as well as other divisions around the world.

HoliMont members and non-members alike can choose to have their ceremony amidst the tranquil hills of the resort inside the chalet lodge, outside the lodge in front of the slopes or on top of the hill via a chairlift ride.

After the ceremony, the couple can work with HoliMont’s staff to create a dream reception inside and outside the beautiful chalet, which can accommodate weddings with up to 350 guests. “We offer full service wedding planning services from decorating to logistics for your special day,” said Dina DiPasquale, owner of Dina’s at the Mont. “We don’t do ‘cookie cutter’ weddings. Every bride and groom’s day is planned around their tastes, budget and style.”

Catering for weddings is also provided by Dina’s,

and couples can choose from a diverse menu selection that’s sure to impress. In DiPasquale’s words, “Our approach to food is bringing out the natural flavors of each ingredient, creating a harmonious plate that is not only delicious but nutritious. We source local product whenever possible and believe in drawing from seasonal fresh foods that are harvested from the surrounding area.”
