wrote. “Paying the assistant 25% out of my $5,000 is different. To me it should be a separate budget allotment, though there is no doubt it is well deserved.” Ramsey wrote that she would be significantly losing money from the hours she would have to give up at her regular employment to fulfill the tax collector role. “The hardest thing for me to understand is why would someone agree to be bonded for upwards of $10,000,000 yet make

less than starting wages at Burger King or McDonald’s?” she wrote. Addressing that situation prior to the meeting, Alsworth said that he works 40 or more hours a week for the town board and only receives a $9,000 yearly salary. “This is my way of serving the community and giving back,” he said. At the meeting it was noted that Ramsey had met the legal formalities, allowing the town board, during its special

session, to appoint a replacement tax collector for 2021. The position will once again be on the ballot in November 2021 to fill the unexpired term of former tax collector Joanne Green. At the emergency meeting the board approved Deputy Town Clerk Sally Boehl to fill out the term of tax collector until the next meeting of the board where she will be approved for 2021. Kathy Bower

BUFFALO — Fillmore resident Kathy Bower has been honored by the Alzheimer’s AssociationWestern New York Chapter with the William

P. Gillick Quality of Life Award for 2020. The award recognizes individuals whose work has made extraordinary advances toward improv-

ing the quality of life for persons with dementia. For more than 30 years, Bower has worked with the residents at Houghton Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, where she currently leads activities and volunteer services. “Having lost a beloved grandmother to Alzheimer’s disease and countless friends and residents to dementia, I feel compelled to do whatever I can to ensure those living with dementia and their families have the support they need,” Bower said of her involvement with the Alzheimer’s Association. She has volunteered for various programs and outreach efforts for the local chapter, but took that work one step further when she accepted the challenge of chairing the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s in the Southern Tier in 2019 and 2020. Since Bower took the reins, the fundraiser has grown 30%. “Kathy is a tremendous asset in our fight to end

UPD at Alfred State lifting spirits during holiday season

ALFRED — Every year, the University Police Department at Alfred State College does its part to make spirits a little brighter during the holiday season. This year was no exception, as the department once again participated in several programs designed to spread some cheer and provide relief to the local community. One of those programs was the No-Shave November initiative, which seeks to “grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free,” according to no-shave.org. The program requires participants to “donate the money you typically spend on shaving and grooming to educate about cancer prevention, save lives, and aid those fighting the battle.” Lt. Scott Bingham organized the program for the UPD at Alfred State. University Police Chief Scott Richardson noted that he has extended the No Shave November initiative for his department through December. “We had several people off in November who

normally participate, so by extending it, we could raise more money,” he said. So far, the UPD has raised $500 and counting, which will benefit Allegany County Cancer Services. “With that month extension, the officer who raises the most money will be allowed to keep their beard through January,” Richardson said. “We might even let all that participated keep their beards until the end of semester break as a thank you for their efforts.” In addition to this effort, Lt. Kris Bianchi partnered with the Office of Civic Engagement to collect monetary donations for the ACCORD Community Action Angels program, which helps community members during the holiday season. The department raised over $400 for this program, which will provide gift cards to children ages 11 to 18. On Dec. 12, Richardson, Officer Jeremy Boorman and Officer Joseph Histed joined forces with the Hornell and Canisteo Police Departments at the Hornell Walmart and participated in “Shop with a Cop.”

“The Shop with a Cop event has always been a special event for law enforcement,” Richardson said. “I was so glad that we were able to continue this tradition with the current pandemic. It allows parents and children to see police officers in a positive environment. The excitement of a child picking out presents for his or her family and the happiness it brings them is a memory that we never forget. Oftentimes when they go over their set amount, we chip in to make up the difference. It’s often because they wait to get themselves a gift until their family is taken care of.” Additionally, Richardson, Dispatcher Craig Heller and Lt. Matt Heller rang the bell outside Walmart on Wednesday for the Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle Drive. “Ringing the bell for the Salvation Army is something that we participated in for the first time last year,” Richardson said. “We really enjoyed it, and I had one officer tell me that they wanted to make this a new yearly tradition. I think that any chance we

BELFAST — Every December, the Allegany County Town Highway Superintendents Association (ACTHSA)rallies together for the Allegany County ACCORD Community Action Angels Toy Drive. Typically, each town highway superintendents, county representatives, retirees and associate vendor members each donate a toy for a boy and a toy for a girl. As as a thank you, the ACTHSA treats all involved to a prime rib dinner. This has not been a typical year and ACTHSA faced the need to alter planned events to create a safe alternative — as ACCORD Community Action needed help more than ever. Earlier this month, ACTHSA hosted its toy drive at the Belfast Mu-

nicipal Building. Instead of an inside gathering, the organization hosted a drivethrough donation event. ACTHSA pre-purchased 10 $20 gift cards from 10 locally owned and operated restaurants/takeout businesses throughout Allegany County. The establishments are Bolivar Country Club, Crego’s Birdsall Inn, Harrington’s of Belfast, Café Jacobs of Bolivar, Mama’s Smokin’ BBQ of Wellsville, Mike’s on the Corner of Scio, Mulheisen’s of Almond, Murdock’s of Cuba, Sierra Inn of Swain and Still Water of Wellsville. As donations were made, contributors were able to choose a gift card, with many donating cards forward to ACCORD to give to families. In addition to $700 in

Dollar General gift cards as well as toys and baby clothing donated by ACTHSA, there were other donations to ACCORD Community Action Angel 2020 Toy Drive: • $250 from the Allegany County Deputy Sheriff’s Association • $250 by Todd Hartman of Donegal Construction • A truckload of toys by County Clerk Rob Christman • Bags of toys by Allegany County District Attorney Keith Slep There were also donations from from area businesses, including Chemung Supply, Gernatt’s, Donegal, E&M Engineers, Bobcat of Olean, Hunter Buffalo Peterbilt, Lane Enterprise, Marquart’s, New Enterprise, Suit-Kote, Kheops and TIFCO.

get to shine a positive light on our agency and our profession is something that we do not take lightly. I’m very thankful that we have a department that embraces helping others and looks for opportunities to do so.”

Richardson noted that with all the uncertainty that has arisen during this pandemic, one of the things that has remained constant is the desire among his officers and dispatchers to participate in these efforts

and come up with ways that they could give back to their community. “There is one side of law enforcement that never changes, and that’s our commitment to helping people,” he said.
