BELVIDERE — It was a fiery end for the old truck stop over the weekend. The former All American Plaza truck stop and restaurant at the corner of Route 19 and County Road 20 in Belvidere was destroyed in a controlled blaze, said Allegany County Industrial Development Agency Executive Director Craig Clark, clearing the way for redevelopment. “It’s the first step — we’re very happy to take that first step,” Clark said, noting the IDA has been attempting to redevelop the site for more than a decade. In August, the IDA announced that Quicklee’s, founded in 1995 in Avon, would build its 20th location on the site. A fast foodtype restaurant is also to be included in the development. Setting fire to a building for demolition is not typical for the start of such redevelopments, Clark said, and it was a push by the developer to make it a reality. “The developer wanted to get started working with the community,” Clark said, adding it was an act of goodwill to bring in the Belmont Fire Department and

other agencies for the training exercise. “It’s a good first step. (Fire departments) don’t get to do it very often — and there’s a lot of requirements.” Clark noted the developer needed to do additional work on the building for the burn, including removal of roofing material, adding to the cost. Now that the existing structure is gone, developers plan to be done with the project before next winter. “They’re hoping to get the building permit

for the foundation,” he said, and architectural plans are in hand and waiting for the weather to break. “They’re still saying eight or nine months after the shovels are in the ground to being done.” The timeline works well, as there is one section of the water line from Friendship still in the works before any business can open at the site. “There is an easement we’re still dealing with,” Clark said, affecting around 200 feet of the 3-mile line.

He hopes to have a resolution to the situation soon. The IDA is still working with a second developer on building a hotel at the site. In a 2015 study launched by the IDA and other county agencies, officials figured that a 100-bed hotel at the site could realistically see a 60-percent occupancy rate every day, with sellouts expected multiple times throughout the year. and Houghton, home of Houghton College. The surrounding area also includes numerous state forests, which are popular with out-of-area hunters who need a place to stay. IN LIGHT OF development moving forward, the Allegany County Board of Legislators approved a 2-year, $450,000 partnership with the IDA on Monday with no opposition. “The IDA is going to work harder, particularly for the Crossroads,” Clark

said, with the money going toward marketing efforts to drive more development at the site. “Now that we have the water line, we’re going to really go at the Crossroads development.” Under the resolution approved Monday, the IDA will receive up to $225,000 in 2020 and the same amount in 2021 to “provide an energetic and continuing program of promoting industrial development and enhancing the economic climate of the County.”

WNY STEM Hub Announces Local Finalists for Take Flight Space Experiments Program

Student Scientists Design Authentic Research Projects for Space Station

WNY STEM Hub, a regional nonprofit offering one-of-akind STEM learning experiences, will soon be announcing the winners of their 4th mission to space competition for experiment projects designed by local students as a part of the WNY Take Flight Program.

Three local schools were announced as finalists this week during the WNY STEM Hub Networking Session on Biomedical Careers at Roswell Park’s Research Studies Center: International Preparatory Academy in Buffalo, Lockport High School and Wellsville Secondary School. The teams now move to the final round of judging and one winner will be selected on December 17th. This is the fourth year that WNY STEM Hub has offered the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program, designed and operated by the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education (NCESSE). The goal is for student scientists to create and design flight experiments that can be conducted by astronauts onboard the International Space Station as part of the Take Flight Program. WNY STEM Hub coordinated the project with more than 300 students from 6 local schools in grades 5-12 to design and test authentic experiments investigating

Local schools incorporate curriculum explaining space experiments and then students form research teams of 3-5 students per team who draft a formal experiment design and proposal. Each of the teams compete to be the one student team whose microgravity experiment gets sent to the International Space Station, where astronauts will operate the experiment scheduled for the Spring/Summer of 2020. At this point in the competition, a local judging team has rated proposals from each of the participating schools and identified 3 Finalist team proposals to be sent to NCESSE from which a national panel selects one for flight to the ISS. Last-minute Gift Guide Last-minute holiday shopping tips

Holiday shopping season typically begins the day after Thanksgiving and extends all the way to Christmas Eve. While that’s a considerable amount of time for shoppers to find gifts for everyone on their shopping list, many people will still find themselves putting holiday shopping off until the last minute. In certain ways, lastminute holiday shopping is easier than ever. Thanks to online retailers who can ship products overnight, men and women who delay their holiday shopping have more options at their disposal than they did before the arrival of the Internet. And unlike the days of yore when the best deals were largely exclusive to Black Friday, some shoppers find that competition between online retailers and traditional brick-andmortar stores is so great that deals can be found regardless of when they begin shopping. But while waiting until the last minute to begin holiday shopping may not be as risky as it used to be,

shoppers may still benefit by sticking to certain strategies so they can find the perfect gifts without breaking the bank. • Stay within your budget. Even last-minute shoppers have holiday shopping budgets. But it can be harder for lastminute shoppers to stick to their budgets because they have less time to comparison shop and hunt for deals. As the holiday shopping season winds down, resist the temptation to go over budget. If a gift you had in mind is available but more than you can spend, look for something else. Overspending on holiday shopping in December is a recipe for debt in January, and no shopper wants to begin the new year weighed down by consumer debt. • Shop local. National chains and big box retailers are renowned for rolling out great deals during the holiday season, but such stores may have very limited or unimpressive inventory left by the time last-minute shoppers begin shopping. Local retailers

are often incapable of slashing prices as significantly as their larger competitors, and that may mean they have more extensive inventories available throughout the

holiday shopping season. In addition, shoppers who stick with local retailers won’t have to pay shipping costs to ensure items arrive on time. • Shop during off-peak

hours. Shopping during off-peak hours can help last-minute shoppers make efficient use of the limited time they have to buy gifts for their loved ones. Visit stores early in the morning or late at night, or schedule a midweek afternoon shopping trip so you aren’t spending what little time you have left waiting on lines or hunting for parking. • Give something less traditional. Holiday gifts need not come from stores. Rather than spending their time shopping for gifts for loved ones who seemingly have it all, last-minute shoppers can give the gift of a donation in their loved one’s name. Last-minute shoppers who want to give something more tangible can create a homemade gift that’s both unique and heartfelt. If your DIY skills are lacking, give a loved one the gift of a night out on the town at your expense. Shoppers who wait until the end of the holiday shopping season to begin their searches for holiday gifts can still find great gifts without going broke.

Gift-wrapping tips and tricks

Much of the focus of each holiday season is on gift-giving, but all those gifts will eventually need to be wrapped. Stacks of presents just waiting to be covered with paper and ribbon can overwhelm gift givers, prompting them to put off wrapping gifts until the last minute. Hesitant wrappers with a pile of gifts to wrap can use these tricks to make the process go smoothly.

Handle oddlyshaped items Wrapping rectangular boxes can be a snap, but what about something that’s round or full of angles? Think about placing oddly-shaped items inside another item to make the shape more uniform. Shoe boxes, coffee cans and even paper towel rolls can hold items. Then place the wrapping on these containers.

Find inspiration Instead of looking at wrapping as yet another chore, try to envision how the recipient will feel peeling open the paper and finding the gift inside. Wrapping can be the prelude to the gift itself, and intensify the anticipation. The wrapping paper or style also may draw on aspects of the gift itself. For example, a knit scarf can be placed in a crocheted stocking.

Cover prices To enable easy exchanges or returns, do not cut off the price tags of gifts. Instead, place a festive sticker over the dollar amount, but leave the scan bar visible. This way the gift recipient can return the gift with ease if necessary. Keep supplies at the ready Devote a bin or bins to wrapping supplies and tools. You risk tearing the paper or puncturing it when working on carpeting or bedding. Color- or patterncode gifts It’s easy to visualize who gets what gift when each recipient has his or her own special wrapping paper. This is also a handy idea when wrapping gifts from Santa, as it will differentiate the Santa

Cattaraugus County received $699,910. The funding is in addition to dollars announced in September. The 20192020 Public Safety Answering Point Grant appropriated $130,863 for Allegany County and $188,546 for Cattaraugus County. Those funds are set aside to improve 911 response and emergency service dispatching systems. Since 2010, more than $500 million has been set aside to improve the ability of the various agencies supporting emergency services to communicate with one another — a vital link for border areas

of counties in regular operations all the way up to major disasters. During the 9/11 terror attacks, a lack of interoperability proved a hindrance to rescue efforts, and efforts to improve were pushed again after Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The grant is formula-based and funded by cellular surcharge revenue. Projects funded by the grants allows counties to make improvements to systems that first responders use to communicate between one another and different regions of the state, such as land mobile radio systems.

By DEB WUETHRICH PORTVILLE — “Live, Laugh, Love.” Such words are on T-shirts, caps and canvas bags. Similar phrases are posted on restaurant walls, in waiting rooms and in peoples’ homes. There is something about reflecting for a moment on an inspirational word, phrase or quote that can lift a human spirit. Comedian Bill Engvall coined the term, “Here’s Your Sign” for his act as he points out ways we should comprehend obvious things, but the phrase also demonstrates the popularity of signs found in many shops and at craft shows. Certain signs or sayings can resonate with individuals. Some of these are called aphorisms, which are thoughts expressed in the fewest words, often revealing some truth — or something that is true for the person wearing or displaying them. One internet blog noted that the science of motivation and inspiration is tricky to study, but such quotes can serve to reinforce what people believe about themselves or provide a way to broaden perspective, encourage or motivate. Doing a round at the Arts, Craft and Antique Show at Portville Central School last month, or any craft show this fall and winter in this region, reveals that the appeal for sayings on wood and other products is alive and well. Paul J. Lowry of Bolivar was doing a brisk business in his Papa’s Wood Shop booth at the Portville show and recently said he was just finishing up on some custom orders that stemmed from that weekend early in November. “The signs are just a small part of

my business,” said Lowry, who has been working in wood since high school. “I build furniture to customer specifications as well and have just begun to do it full-time.” Lowry has owned Lowry Security as a distributor of lock supplies and security hardware for larger institutions for several years. “It’s getting later in life and what I started doing as a hobby just kind of took off,” he said. Lowry’s signs are crisp and precise, done on CNC (Computer Numerical Control) routers using 3-D cutting machines. The machine was a large investment he said. “I took my time learning it, but now I have more time to work on the projects.” He uses grade A lumber, prime wood, nothing with knots that would distort the lettering. While he leans on customers telling him what they want, Lowry also comes up with some of his own ideas. “I’ll just see something that catches my eye or something unique and make a sign,” he said. One read, “Marriage is an endless sleepover with your favorite weirdo.” “My wife likes that one,” he said. A sign that proved very popular for sales this year brings in modern technology: “Alexa — Wash the Dishes.” He said he’s getting so busy a website is likely in his future, but for now he can be found on Facebook. “This is just something I’ve always enjoyed doing, not for the money, really,” he said. “It’s about doing what I love to do and I’m fortunate to be able to live the life I’m living and lifting spirits in the process.” For some, just meditating on a single word can prove encouraging or

motivating as Annette Seybert, of Portville, discovered. She works part-time at Venture Forthe in Olean and has always felt drawn to the creative arts such as painting in watercolor and fashioning craft items. After her husband, Rick Seybert, tripped and fell in 2015 while walking the family dog, hitting his head on pavement, Seybert found that she needed a diversion during a confusing and difficult time through what turned out to be a traumatic brain injury for her husband. He was, at first, okay, but a short time later, doctors discovered a brain bleed. “What happened is similar to what they are finding with football player injuries today,” Seybert said. “Our lives just changed so drastically. He’s better now and I can look in my journals to see his progress, but there are still challenging days. I was kind of a mess the first two years, researching and learning about TBI’s, wanting to do whatever I could to figure out how I could help him,” she said. “I started to lose weight, couldn’t eat and was emotionally spent.” She said during that time, she needed something to occupy her hands to offer her a break from worry and all that supporting her husband entailed. “I had always loved finding rocks when I took walks,” she said. “During this time, I was walking a lot, picking up rocks.” She had done some dot painting on the rocks, but then, had an idea. “I would think of things I was thankful for and one-word sayings that resonated for me, like ‘strength,’ or ‘faith’ then paint them on the rocks,” she said. “What I found was that keeping busy can change your perspective about everything. These were little projects

but something I could compete in a short time as opposed to a painting or something it took a long time to do.” In the process, she discovered others were drawn to the painted rocks as well. Each year, she offers some at the Portville craft show, sharing a booth with her daughter, Alyssa, who makes oatmeal soaps. “I sold quite a few of them,” she said. “Other people seem to like them, too, and it keeps me going, coming up with ideas and designs and deciding on a word that might inspire someone else.” One Christmas, Seybert even put her rock-painting skills to work as unique gifts for her grandchildren. “I painted each name on a rock, researched the name’s meaning and printed it on a piece of paper,” she said. “Then, I made little sachet sacks to keep them in. They all read them aloud when they opened them,

Oishei Foundation awards Alfred State College a $100,000 grant for HVAC program

ALFRED, NY, December 2019 – Alfred State College (ASC) is pleased to announce that it has recently received a $100,000 grant from The John R. Oishei Foundation. The grant will help grow the college’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) program and increase its capacity for meeting high industry demand of quality, job-ready graduates.

Specifically, the grant aims to double the student enrollment of ASC’s two-year HVAC major, upgrade and renovate the college’s existing HVAC facility on the Wellsville campus, and to equip state-of-the-art freshmen laboratories and classrooms that can serve 40 students each year. This expansion and enhancement of the HVAC program will benefit industry in two ways. First, it will provide twice as many graduates each year to meet workforce needs. Second, it will provide graduates with more experience in clean energy, renewable energy, and manufacturing applications. Alfred State’s HVAC program provides both the necessary theory connected with plumbing and HVAC, as well as on-the-job training experience overseen by expert tradesmen. To further prepare them, students take the National Refrigerant Handling Certification Course and Test and the National ARI HVAC (Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Institute Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning) Competency Test. New ACAF fund to honor Van Dines

BELMONT — The Ken & Judi Van Dine Christian Service Grant has been established by the Grace United Church family and friends of the Van Dines at the Allegany County Area Foundation. The fund is to honor their strong Christian commitment; 50-plus years of service to their church and community; and their mission work in Haiti. A long-time, Wellsville ophthalmologist, Dr. Van Dine and Judi, a registered nurse, first went to Haiti on a medical mission in 1985, at the invitation of a medical colleague serving in the Central Highlands village of Pignon. Ken and Judi returned to Haiti many times over the next 20 years, developing significant

greatest desire with this grant is to support and encourage young people interested in missions to adopt a similar focus. The Van Dines’ son Neil, has been a full-time missionary in Haiti for 30 years, and is a highly qualified mentor to individuals serving in developing nations. The grant will provide support for persons preparing for a shortterm missionary experience that focuses on development efforts, with priority given to those serving in Haiti (other locations overseas and domestic will be considered). Who hasn’t been frustrated at one point or another searching for a misplaced phone or car keys? Looking for lost items has the potential to zap efficiency and waste a lot of time. A 2017 “Lost & Found Survey” by Pixie, a smart location solution for iPhones, says the average American wastes 2.5 days a year just looking for lost stuff. In addition, $2.7 billion is spent each year replacing misplaced items. Items that most commonly go missing include television remotes, phones, car and house keys, glasses, shoes, and wallets. In addition to using tracking devices to keep tabs on commonly misplaced things, there are other steps people can take to avoid misplacing their belongings. Create a designated place to store frequently used items. That means each day a set of keys should be taken and returned to a hook by the door or in a table in the entryway to your home. Remotes should be kept in a specific spot, too, perhaps right by the television or on an end table next to the couch. Avoid distractions as much as possible when handling these items, so you are certain you return them to their correct locations. Plus, don’t be lazy. Placing items back where they belong each and every time instead of dropping them anywhere not only helps keep things from going missing, but also contributes to a tidy home.
