CARE for Children presents Community CARE Awards at annual meeting BRADFORD — The annual meeting of the CARE for Children Board of Directors was held Thursday evening at the Bradford Club.

The CARE Board of Directors honored the United Way of the Bradford Area Inc. and Todd Busses with the organization’s 2019 Community CARE Awards.

“The United Way of the Bradford Area has supported CARE since its days as the Community Chest and when we began as the McKean County Society for Crippled Children,” noted Norm Strotman, CARE board president. “The United Way provides vital funding and bolsters CARE and many other agencies under its vast umbrella and serves as an important leader of the local non-profit sector, supporting and pro-

moting collaboration that strengthens our community.”

The CARE Board also honored two employees who have reached milestone years of service at the organization. Ashley Carlson, MOT, OTR/L, pediatric therapy services director, recognized staff members Kimberly Miller, OTR/L, occupational therapist, 10 years; and Kylie Battin, M.S., CCC-SLP, speech/ language pathologist, 5 years.

Tina M. Martin, CARE executive director, delivered the presentation of Todd Busses’ award and lauded the Eldred business for donating transportation services for CARE’s therapeutic recreation programs and special events.

“It may seem a simple thing, host a fun activity and the kids will come… but in our rural area transportation is a significant barrier to accessing programs and services for some families. At CARE we appreciate Todd Busses for giving children who participate in our programs opportunities they may never have if it were not for a bus ride,” said Martin.

Cater wedding menus to guests’ dietary needs Gone are the days when wedding reception menus were limited to the onesize-fits-all offerings of meat, chicken or fish. Thanks to modern diets, couples hoping

to accommodate guests may need to provide a wide array of food choices.

It is impossible to pinpoint an exact number, as there are no definitive surveys

classifying all dietary preferences, but there are believed to be around 7.9 million people in the United States who follow a vegetarian-based diet. Of those people, around one

million are strictly vegan, according to data in The Economist. In addition, NYU Langone Health says one-third of Americans are trying to avoid gluten. The Gluten Free Agency, which is a consulting group dedicated to helping advertisers, says some nine million people in Canada are going gluten-free now for medical or personal reasons. Toss in the scores of people with peanut or other allergies and even more caution is needed when designing wedding menus.

Savvy couples who have guests’ health and comfort in mind recognize the importance of offering a varied meal plan for wedding-related parties and receptions. The following are some ideas to consider when planning wedding menus.

• Consider a buffet-style service. Al-

though couples might like the tradition and flair that a seated/plated meal offers, it creates a much more limited selection of meal options.

Buffet-style dinner service often provides couples with multiple choices, and it’s much more likely they can come up with a combination that caters to any food allergies or dietary restrictions guests may have.

• Opt for food stations. In lieu of one long buffet table, a modern approach is to have staffed food stations. Foods as well as their ingredients can be clearly stated on food

table placards so guests can make appropriate choices.

• Offer alternatives for dessert. Wedding cake can be a challenge to someone with a gluten sensitivity or an egg or a nut allergy.

While not every guest indulges in dessert, make it a point to offer an alternative to cake.

Perhaps a groom’s cake can be revamped into gluten-free cookie bars or a nut-free trifle.

Couples who know in advance which types of dietary restrictions their guests have can work with caterers to devise a menu that suits everyone.

Last-minute Gift Guide Last-minute holiday shopping tips

Holiday shopping season typically begins the day after Thanksgiving and extends all the way to Christmas Eve. While that’s a considerable amount of time for shoppers to find gifts for everyone on their shopping list, many people will still find themselves putting holiday shopping off until the last minute.

In certain ways, lastminute holiday shopping is easier than ever. Thanks to online retailers who can ship products overnight, men and women who delay their holiday shopping have more options at their disposal than they did before the arrival of the Internet. And unlike the days of yore when the best deals were largely exclusive to Black Friday, some shoppers find that competition between online retailers and traditional brick-andmortar stores is so great that deals can be found regardless of when they begin shopping. But while waiting until the last minute to begin holiday shopping may not be as risky as it used to be,

holiday shopping season.

In addition, shoppers who stick with local retailers won’t have to pay shipping costs to ensure items arrive on time.

• Shop during off-peak

Gift-wrapping tips and tricks

on aspects of the gift itself. For example, a knit scarf can be placed in a crocheted stocking.

Handle oddlyshaped items Wrapping rectangular boxes can be a snap, but what about something that’s round or full of angles? Think about placing oddly-shaped items inside another item to make the shape more uniform.

Shoe boxes, coffee cans and even paper towel rolls can hold items. Then place the wrapping on these containers.

Cover prices To enable easy exchanges or returns, do not cut off the price tags of gifts.

Instead, place a festive sticker over the dollar amount, but leave the scan bar visible. This way

the gift recipient can return the gift with ease if necessary.

Keep supplies at the ready Devote a bin or bins to wrapping supplies and tools.

Having scissors, paper, tape, ribbon, and more in a designated spot will cut down on having to hunt and peck when it comes time to wrap. Martha Stewart suggests getting a rotary cutter to cut long straight or decorative edges on wrapping paper. Rotary cutters may be easier to use than scissors, especially when paired with a ruler.

Wrap on a firm surface Devote a table or counter to wrapping gifts. This will keep the paper taut and neat and make it easier to cut and

position. You risk tearing the paper or puncturing it when working on carpeting or bedding.

Rather than spending their time shopping for gifts for loved ones who seemingly have it all, last-minute shoppers can give the gift of a donation in their loved one’s name. Last-minute shoppers who want to give something more tangible can create a homemade gift that’s both unique and heartfelt. If your DIY skills are lacking, give a loved one the gift of a night out on the town at your expense.

Shoppers who wait until the end of the holiday shopping season to begin their searches for holiday gifts can still find great gifts without going broke.

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn’t until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

Modifications can make driving safer for seniors Driving provides an almost unrivaled level of independence. The ability to travel beyond a neighborhood or even one’s hometown without a chaperone is probably what excites new drivers so much and makes them eager to get their licenses and cars. Senior drivers also may define their independence by their ability to drive.

Few things diminish senior dignity and independence faster than losing the ability to drive.

Despite popular misconceptions, seniors are some of the safest drivers around. The experts at Hartford Auto Insurance indicate that the number of accidents involving older drivers actually decreases as age increases. It’s the risk factors like medical conditions, medication

usage and reduced physical function that increase the risk for accidents and injuries involving older drivers. Thanks to technology and some other well-designed devices, seniors may be able to continue driving longer than the aging drivers of years past.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a nonprofit research and education asso-

ciation, says roughly 90 percent of seniors don’t take advantage of simple, often inexpensive features that can greatly improve safety and extend their time behind the wheel.

Here are some considerations.

• Cushions and seat pads: Cushions do more than just alleviate hip and back pain while sitting. Cushions and pads can raise

drivers up and improve their line of sight over the dashboard. Swivel pads can make it easier to enter and exit the car as well.

• Adaptive cruise control: This feature can adjust speed automatically to maintain a consistent space between vehicles.

• Adaptive headlights: These headlights, also known as steerable headlights,

can improve visibility by changing the direction of the light beam with the movement of the steering wheel.

• Pedal extenders: Extenders help short drivers reach the pedals while maintaining a safe distance from the steering wheel and potential airbag deployment.

• Hand controls: Whether one has sensory changes in the feet from surgery or a medical condition, adaptive hand controls can move the “pedals” up to the steering column.

• Blind spot warning and other sensors: Today’s cars can be equipped with any number of sensors that can detect oncoming traffic, cars to the left or right of the vehicle, items or cars behind the vehicle when reversing, and even if the

vehicle has drifted out of the lane. These are all great safety features for any driver, but may be especially helpful to seniors.

• Parking assist: Parking assist technology can steer the vehicle into a space with little input from the driver.

• Voice control: Avoiding distractions and keeping hands on the wheel is enhanced by voice controls, which can be set up to do things like turn on the radio or adjust climate control.

• Convex mirrors: Special mirrors increase the field of vision.

Seniors have many tools available to make driving safer and more comfortable, which can prolong their years behind the wheel.
