Wellsville trustees OK parking meter funds going to Rodgers society

WELLSVILLE — The Thelma Rodgers Genealogical and Historical Society will benefit from the village’s forgiveness program. For many years, the village government has traditionally boosted downtown holiday shopping by shutting down parking meters. In recent years, rather than hooding the meters, notices have been attached to the meters informing motorists that any coins they place in the meters between Thanksgiv-
ing and New Year’s Day will be donated to a local charities. Last month, trustees decided that the recipient of this year’s holiday parking meter funds will be presented to the Thelma Rogers Genealogical and Historical Society. Before the decision was made, Wellsville Mayor Randy Shayler advised, “We need to designate a recipient to receive the holiday parking meter funds. I don’t know what the amount will be this year, but in the past, it has been a sub-
stantial donation, between $2,000 and $2,400.” Trustee Mike Roeske, who has recently met with members of the society, told the board, “They are low on funds, because they haven’t received their normal donations because of COVID-19.” Afterwards, the board voted unanimously to award the funds to the society. The board also approved issuing an event permit for the annual Laurie Mickle Memorial Fireworks Display to be held Friday at 7 p.m.

Station Cancellation For over 15 years, it was thought that the cancellation could be used only on one day, but the postmaster learned that the cancellation could be used for a specific length of time. For the last three years, the everyday use of the cancellation has been expanded from the first Friday in December to December 24. Collectors have a longer time in which to apply for the cancellation. Kaake thinks it is a great idea. “I’d like it to represent the 24 days of Christmas and they be used as a kind of Advent calendar,” she said. “What I care about,” she said, “is that the angel remains a positive thing for the community and for humanity. So many things are politicized these days and I don’t want to see that happen to the angels. I want the angels to be appreciated and to bring the joy of Christmas to people around the world.” Kaake will turn 82 this December and says art is still an important part of her life. “It keeps me sane,” she admitted. joy of the season.” Starting on Dec. 4, mail submitted to the Angelica Post Office, on Main Street, will be marked with the Angel Station cancellation from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. All mail received requesting the Angel Station cancellation after Dec. 24 will be for collectors only and only for 30 days. Collectors should provide a return-addressed, stamped

Manor Hills reported that they have been 14 days without a positive test.” Houghton Rehabilitation and Nursing Center reported 16 employees and 29 residents have recovered from the virus, according to the health department. Of the 49 county residents to succumb to the virus, the youngest was a 69-year-old man; the two oldest recorded victims were 100 years old, a man and a woman. The health department does not have the ages recorded of six of the deceased residents. Meanwhile, Allegany County Legislative District IV, which includes Wellsville and Andover, by far has the most cases of COVID-19 infection — 436, or 40%, through Nov. 29. District I, which includes, Centerville, Hume, Granger, Rushford, Cadeadea, Belfast and Angelica, had 191 cases, 18%.
District II, which includes, New Hudson, Cuba, Friendship, Amity, Ward and Clarksville, had 166, or 15%. District III, which includes Wirt, Scio, Genesee, Bolivar, Alma, Willing and Independence, had 141, or 13%. District V, which includes, Grove, Burns, Allen, Birdsall, Almond, West Almond and Alfred, had 148, or 15%.Statewide, the positive test rate for the virus was 4.57% on Sunday, up from 4.27% the day before. The seven-day average is now 3.71%. In addition to warning that hospital services could be overwhelmed, the Allegany County Department of Health has warned in recent weeks that the county could be designated color zones by the state, leading to more restrictions meant to slow the spread of COVID-19. “(I)f we do not heed the warnings and advice from public health and the medical professionals, Jones Memorial Hospital and many other healthcare systems may not be able to provide the necessary care for those who need it,” officials said in a statement.
