SMETHPORT — There were enough canines in the McKean County Courthouse at noon Friday to produce another of the popular Subaru automobile TV commercials featuring lovable dogs. The occasion was the “swearing-in” ceremony of the CASA of McKean County Courthouse Therapy Dog Program, which provides six therapy dogs to children who are participating in dependency court proceedings. This is the state’s first therapy dog program of this type administered by CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates. “A therapy dog provides affection and comfort to

Other benefits, Hauser mentioned, are aiding in building rapport with caseworkers, attorneys and other professional adults, providing comfort or support for the child while reducing anxiety and stress, improving the child’s self-esteem and providing nonjudgmental acceptance and attention to the child. our staff and bear unconditional love and solace, especially on busy days? That you will take this obligation freely, without any promise of treats and that you will faithfully discharge your duties to provide joy, love and nurturing for our children, families and staff?”

Eagle Court of Honor held for Cory Dart

SMETHPORT — Cory Dart of Boy Scout Troop 501 in Smethport is now officially an Eagle scout. Cory, the son of Keith and Kelly Dart of Keating Township, received Boy Scouts of America’s highest achievement award during an Eagle Court of Honor last week at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Smethport. Scoutmaster Scott Dickerson, in the role of master of ceremonies, welcomed those in attendance that included family, friends and
fellow Eagle Scouts. Pastor Robert Gorton offered the invocation. Ethan Nannen, who has already completed his Eagle Scout project, led the group in the pledge and scout oath and lit the 12 ceremonial candles. In his remarks, Senior District Executive Todd Peinie noted the impact Eagle Scouts have on society, referring to the low number of all Boy Scouts that actually advance to this level and their later achievements in many fields.
In addition to earning 21 merit badges, being a Life Scout for at least six months, candidates for the Eagle award must demonstrate leadership and plan, develop and lead a service project that must benefit the community, religious institutions or non-profit organizations. Cory described his project, which was repairing and resetting 1,400 veterans’ flag holders in the Lafayette Cemetery. Eagle Scout Jeff Moore led the Eagle Scout Challenge. Dickerson led the Eagle Scout Promise and announced the awards presentations. These included the Eagle Scout Medal, mother’s pin, Eagle Scout certificate, father’s pin and Eagle Scout coin. Cory presented the Mentor’s Pin to his grandfather Gerald Dart. Peinie read the letters of congratulations from BSA’s district office, Allegheny Highlands Council, U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson and state Rep. Martin Causer. Pastor Gorton closed the program with the benediction.

HARRISBURG – The wide array of programs and support services offered by the state’s 66 county conservation districts were the subject of an informational meeting of the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee Wednesday.

Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint), chairman of the committee. “They truly are a vital partner with the Commonwealth and our communities in achieving both environmental and economic success.”
She was pleased by the opportunity to appear before the committee and share her enthusiasm for the work she and her fellow conservation districts managers, employees and board members do.
McKean County Conservation District Manager Sandy Thompson was one of four presenters at the meeting, outlining for lawmakers the importance of the Dirt, Gravel and Low-Volume Road program administered at the statewide level by the State Conservation Commission and at the local level by county conservation districts.

She highlighted the collaboration the district has helped to facilitate in the effort to best meet the financial and technical needs of Blair County’s municipalities.

She explained how the program impacts water quality issues, by reducing the amount of erosion and runoff; saves municipalities money by reducing maintenance costs; and improves public safety. The conservation district offers

Causer introduced House Bill 1754 to name the bridge at the request of Voorhees’ family and with the support of local officials and

PORT ALLEGANYElmer Y. Knauer, 73, of Benson Hollow Rd., passed away unexpectedly Friday (Nov. 22, 2019) in his home. Born December 19, 1945, in Rehrersburg, PA, he was a son of George and Kathryn Yost Knauer. He married Gloria Jean Sherwood, who died June 10, 2002.
Elmer was a longtime resident of the area and attended the Sartwell Creek Union Church, Burtville. Mr. Knauer was a self-employed dairy farmer for 42 years, before his retirement. He enjoyed farming, hunting, and spending time with his family and his dogs. Surviving are a son, Elmer E. (Shana) Knauer of Port Allegany; a daughter, Tonya J. (Tom) Sorton of Port Allegany; two grandchildren, Elmer C. Knauer and Klarah J. Knauer both of Port Allegany; two brothers, George Y. Knauer and Phares Y. (Betty) Knauer both of Coudersport; eight sisters: Pauline Y. Hartranft of Myerstown, PA, Kathryn Y. (Leroy) Hartranft of Bernville, PA, Minnie Y. (Phil) Morey of Roulette, Marie Y. Young and Edith Y. (Randy) Empson both of Genesee, PA. Louisa Y. Berndt of Fleetwood, PA, Emma Y.
