WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce board and events committee invite the community to join in It’s a Wonderful Life in Wellsville — formerly known as Holidays in the Village — this holiday season. The season will be kicked off on Saturday, Nov. 30, with the parade starting at 4:15 p.m. on Main Street and ending with Santa Claus lighting the trees at the David A. Howe Library and out front of Jones Memorial Hospital at 5 p.m. Be on the lookout for your favorite ugly sweater and pet costume, which will be voted on by a celebrity panel of judges. It is free to enter your pet into the contest but the Chamber does ask for a small donation that will be given to the SPCA. The parade will begin at Tullar Field and end at Jones Memorial hospital. Children participating will be lined up by grade level and are encouraged to have adult supervision at all times. It’s also Shop Local Saturday on Nov. 30, Karen Kania, membership services coordinator for the Chamber, points out. “Our member businesses are what make ‘It’s A Wonderful Life in Wellsville’ a reality, so get out and support them. We will have listings of the sales and specials being offered on the Chamber Facebook page and website.” Planners have made changes to this year’s holiday lineup based on feedback from business owners and community members, who were polled and voted in favor to move the main events

from Thursday evenings to Saturdays. Kania said the jackpot drawings from previous years had become increasingly confusing for both participating businesses and their customers. This year’s drawings will run the same for the most part; however, the winner does not have to be present to win. To be entered, one must simply stop in to a participating location and fill out a slip to be entered. One entry will be allowed per patron per visit to each business each week. Drawings will be for one of three of the It’s a Wonderful Life in Wellsville baskets made
up of donations received from our member businesses. Donations can include merchandise, branded items, gift cards and other various items. Each week the basket will increase in value. Kania said drawings will be hosted Dec 7, Dec 14 and Dec. 21 at 4 p.m. Announcements will be made via the Chamber’s Facebook page and radio. She added that a great activity for the kids is this year’s puzzle search. Kids will start at the Chamber to pick up their puzzle search instructions and packet. They’ll receive one puzzle piece at each participating business until
they complete their search and finish the puzzle that they will keep. They will then return to the chamber to get their prize and be entered to win an even bigger holiday stocking. Puzzles can be picked up the week of Nov. 25 but the search will not begin until the kickoff on Nov 30. Along with the drawings and puzzle search, several other events will be happening each week throughout the holiday season. Free gift wrapping and cocoa will be available at the Chamber from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Story Time Saturdays will be held at 11 a.m. at varying locations. Parents can bring their little ones to hear a Christmas story read by their favorite Christmas characters. Readings are free to attend but Kania said the Chamber is asking that non-perishable items be brought to be donated to the local food bank. The Chamber is also hosting three holiday craft classes: Wreath making with “Joy of the Season Wreaths” on Nov. 30 from noon to 2 p.m.; “Creations with Cryder Creek Gardens” from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 7; and “Paint and Hang” classes with two slots from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 14. Also, Allegany Mud Club will host it’s holiday pottery sale each Saturday at the Creative Arts Center from noon to 3 p.m. In the second week, on Dec. 7, the Chamber will host the annual cookie contest and Pictures with Santa from noon to 2 pm at the library. For a $1 donation, guests will get to try each cookie in a blind taste test and vote for their favorite. Digital pictures will be free and printed copies will be offered for purchase by the photographer. Need a little time to complete your Christmas shopping? Fatal ATV accident in Bolivar
BOLIVAR — A Grand Island man was killed in what appeared to be a hunting-related all-terrain vehicle accident on the opening day of regular big game
season. Amity-based state police reported Monday that they were called out at 3:25 p.m. Saturday to a site on County Road 33. A passerby on the
trail driving a UTV reported that he found a man unresponsive under an overturned ATV. EMS attempted life saving measures on scene, but were
unsuccessful. Troopers identified the victim as Daniel G. Berg, 67, of Grand Island, who was believed to be hunting on the property.
Bolivar-Richburg voters down $11.25M capital project on Tuesday

BOLIVAR — Voters soundly defeated a proposed $11.25 million capital project at Bolivar-Richburg Central School on Tuesday. Including absentee votes, district officials reported voters rejected the measure during a special referendum, 184-66.
Turnout was relatively high for an off-cycle election. Officials reported 233 voters came to the polls Tuesday, while another 17 absentee ballots were counted. By comparison, 359 votes were tallied in the district for the annual budget vote in May. The project, which was expected to begin construction

Demolition work to begin at Belvidere truck stop

The IDA’s role, in addition to being the current property owner, is to offer exemptions from sales taxes, deed transfer taxes and real property taxes. In return, the firm will offer a payment in lieu of taxes to the county, school district and town. A long-awaited water line is almost complete, as well. Since Allegany County borrowed $3.5 million in early 2012 to build a water line from the Friendship municipal system about four miles away, officials had been hesitant to begin construction before developers were in place. property, as well as other associated costs with the redevelopment. Clark said the contractor is all but done — just one final section needs to be completed, as well as a pressure test of the system. Along with the truck stop, the system will also connect to the state Department of Transportation rest area near Friendship and will be available to homes along the route. A separate developer is also working on bringing a hotel to the site. “We continue to work with a new hotel developer and the ACIDA recently conducted a geotechnical investigation,” Clark said. “Hope to be able to announce something over winter to start construction next year.” In a 2015 study

Brick paving complete at Fassett GreenSpace Project in Wellsville
WELLSVILLE — Brick paving at the Fassett GreenSpace Project on North Main Street in the village has been completed, officially establishing the site as an Americans With Disabilities-compliant, accessible outdoor public garden. Cassandra Bull, president of the board that oversees the project, said she spent more than six months searching and applying for grants to fund installation of brick pavers in GreenSpace. “After receiving 11 rejection letters, Art for Rural America’s board had heard the question, ‘Who would want to pay for a bunch of bricks?’ too many times,” Bull said. The group stayed determined for their cause and was awarded full funding for this
project in May. Greg Carlin, a Wellsville resident and mason with 30 years of experience, was contracted to start installing the pavers in late September. In a little over a month, Carlin finished laying over 14,000 bricks between the walls of the garden labyrinth, covering 2,750 square feet of pathway. “Greg was absolutely fantastic to work with through this process,” Bull said. “You can tell he is an expert in his craft. He was thorough, thoughtful and professional.” A grant was given by the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation’s Design and Access Legacy Funds, administered through the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo. Bull said this is the second time the Wilson Foundation
helped support the GreenSpace Project. The first grant, in partnership with KaBOOM!, funded the procurement and installation of the outdoor musical instruments featured in the garden. The new grant also allowed for the construction of an informational kiosk which now houses a community-made mosaic sign. The GreenSpace now features permeable brick pavers made by Whitacre Greer in Ohio, the same pavers that are installed in Alfred State College’s Wellsville Campus at its zero energy demonstration home. Bull notes the pavers serve as a passive water filtration system in which natural microbes form within the gravel and clean the water as it flows through.
Wellsville man sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping child
BELMONT — A Wellsville man will spend 12 years in state prison for raping a girl younger than 13, according to the office of Allegany County District Attorney Keith Slep. Jeffrey Howell Jr., 27, was also sentenced Thursday in Allegany County Court to 20 years of post-release supervision and handed an order of
protection issued until June 2024. Howell was ordered to pay a $325 surcharge, a $1,000 sex offender surcharge and a $50 DNA fee. The charges against Howell initially included first-degree rape, predatory sexual assault against a child under 13, two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, and two counts of first-degree
criminal sexual act. The charged stemmed from incidents in June and September 2018 in the town and village of Wellsville. Judge Terrence Parker handed down the sentence, with Public Defender Barb Kelley representing Howell and Assistant District Attorney Mike Finn representing the prosecution.
