Festive and Flavorful Holiday Snacks (Family Features) The holidays are filled with delicious food - from indulgent breakfasts to decadent desserts - but snacks can get overlooked. Spice up this holiday season with festive snacks that are perfect for a quick on-the-go bite or a taste of your favorite holiday dessert. Although beloved in pie, pecans are a versatile nut that can be used beyond the pie shell - add them to a snack mix, incorporate them into granola or munch on them straight from the

bag. Delicious and nutritious, 1 ounce of pecans offers 3 grams of plant-based protein and 3 grams of fiber, plus 12 grams of “good” monounsaturated fats and only 2 grams of saturated fat - perfect to power you through long days of holiday shopping. This holiday season, nosh on a handful of these spiced Gingerbread Pecans for a sweet and savory snack while decorating the house or wrapping presents late at night, or set out a bowl for the family to enjoy.

You can also make snacksized versions of your favorite holiday desserts to have on-hand when you’re craving a quick and tasty treat. Chopped pecans add a flavorful and nutrient-dense crunch to these paleo-friendly No-Bake Pumpkin Pecan Pie Bites, while pecan halves provide a festive touch to these Reindeer Pecan Brownies. Discover more nutritious, delicious and festive recipes at AmericanPecan.com.

Reindeer Pecan Brownies

Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Yield: 20 brownies Nonstick cooking spray 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, melted 1 tablespoon pecan or canola oil 1 cup, plus 2 tablespoons, granulated sugar 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup cocoa powder 1 teaspoon espresso powder (optional) 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 20 raw pecan halves, cut in half 40 candy eyeballs 20 red chocolate candies 1/4 cup chocolate chips Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray mini muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray. In large bowl, whisk melted butter, oil and sugar until well combined. Add eggs and vanilla extract; beat until mixture is thick and pale in color, about 1 minute. Sift in flour and cocoa powder. Add espresso powder, if desired, and salt. Using rubber spatula, fold dry ingredients into butter mixture until just combined. Batter should be thick. Using 1-tablespoon cookie scoop, transfer batter to prepared mini muffin tin. Bake 13-15 minutes until toothpick inserted in center comes out mostly clean, with some lingering crumbs. Add chocolate chips to heat-proof bowl; microwave until smooth and melted. Pour melted chocolate into sandwich bag and cut off small portion of one corner to use as tip. Use melted chocolate to “glue” on pecan antlers, candy eyeballs and red candy noses to brownies. Allow chocolate to set before transferring brownies to airtight container. Note: Brownies will stay fresh for up to three days.

Riles & Woolley Funeral Home Riles & Woolley Funeral Home is located at 39 Main Street, Forestville, NY and serves the following communities: Forestville, Sheridan, Silver Creek, Irving, Hanover Center, Smith Mills, Perrysburg, South Dayton, Arkwright, Fredonia & Dunkirk. Mark Woolley of Riles & Woolley Funeral Home is licensed to practice in New York State & Pennsylvania and is also a members of the Chautauqua

County Funeral Directors Association, the New York State Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. The funeral home is currently owned by Mark L. Woolley. Mark Woolley’s partial ownership became official on October 28, 2002 with Warren Riles, who had owned the funeral home since December of 1970. In March 2020, Warren Riles sadly passed away while in

his 50th year of ownership. Riles & Woolley has been an independently owned and operated funeral home since its founding in 1927, by the late Franklin Philbrick, when it was known as Philbrick & Philbrick Funeral Chapel. In the fall of 1989, Mark Woolley, a Forestville native, began working for the funeral home as a licensed funeral director. Through its history, the owners have strived to serve the commu-

nity and surrounding areas in the best ways possible. To continue with this goal in mind, in the spring of 2001, Mr. Riles completed 2 large additions and a complete renovation of the funeral home. These additions include, a new entrance, which contains a grand foyer with a handicap ramp, a set of extra deep handicap steps (for walkers & regular use) and an arrangements office. The other addition

includes a new spacious viewing chapel (which allows the funeral home to have 3 viewing chapels) and a new embalming room. Renovations include, a new men’s rest room & a new women’s rest room, both with handicap accessibility and baby changing tables, a new comfortable & relaxing color scheme,

which is achieved with the new wallpaper, carpeting & drapes, a new music system, a new public address system, larger seating capacity (135 people in one room), off street handicap & regular parking, a two lane exit driveway and heated sidewalks, to prevent ice accumulation in the winter time.

Town center will host safe, socially distanced visits with Santa from Nov. 28 to Dec. 20

E

(LAKEWOOD, NY)– ven in the midst of this uncertain time, nothing can stop the magic of the holidays and one of the season’s most cherished traditions – a visit with Santa Claus. Beginning on Saturday, Nov. 28 through Sunday, Dec. 20, families can safely meet and greet Santa at Chautauqua Mall in center court. The visits with Santa will have a strong focus on health and safety, while allowing for a fun and memorable experience for children and families. Children will have the opportunity to engage in a socially distant conversation and safely pose for a picture with Santa during their visit to Chautauqua Mall’s North Pole. “Visits with Santa are such a nostalgic part of the

T

holiday season for so many children and families in Chautauqua County,” said Julie Bihler, General Manager at Chautauqua Mall. “We’re thrilled to be able to bring a bit of normalcy and holiday magic to our community, while keeping health and safety as our top priority.” Santa will make a special appearance on Black Friday, Nov. 27 at noon. Following a fun musical arrival, Santa will read stories to the children. Reservations for this special event are required, for more information on Santa’s Arrival guests can visit chautauquamall.com. Santa will not be available for photos on Black Friday; photos will be available starting on Saturday, Nov. 28. Santa will be on site to visit with families between the hours of 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

every Saturday and Sunday starting on Nov. 28 through Dec. 20. Chautauqua Mall remains focused on providing a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. In the continued need to address COVID-19, the town center has proactively implemented additions to the Code of Conduct, effective until further notice. These additions include the following guidelines: Practice social distancing and stay at least 6 feet (2 meters) from other people Covering your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover in accordance with state and local guidelines Do not gather in groups Adhere to each individual tenant’s COVID-19 policies Adhere to all federal, state and local regulations, recommendations

and mandates regarding COVID-19 The Code of Conduct is posted at the Center and available online at https:// chautauquamall.com/legal/ code-of-conduct. Chautauqua Mall’s already rigorous disinfectant and cleaning practices will also continue many times per day, including periodically disinfecting areas most susceptible to the spread of germs. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer dispensers are located in highly trafficked areas and walkways for public use. Specifically, social distancing guidelines will be in place around the Santa set, as well as in all queue lines. For additional information on Chautauqua Mall and visits with Santa, please visit chautauquamall.com.

The bright side of small holiday celebrations

o say the novel coronavirus COVID-19 changed life would be an understatement. Due to COVID-19, the way people interact with one another has changed dramatically over the last several months. Despite this, the public has proven very resilient and adaptive, often finding a silver lining while confronting challenges that might once have seemed insurmountable. The holidays are one aspect of life that have been modified as people continue to navigate the new normal. It’s easy to lament the fact that extended family may not be able to travel or celebrate the holidays together. However, there is something to be said for small celebrations. The following are some of the positive aspects of scaling back holiday festivities. • More personal: Certainly it can be great to see distant cousins or old college roommates for the holidays. But the more people who you see

each holiday season, the less personal interaction you get. When the holidays are scaled back, dinner becomes more intimate and everyone can exchange gifts and see their loved ones’ reactions. • Reduced expenses: Putting out an extensive holiday spread and entertaining 10 or more people can be expensive. Small gatherings are less expensive because there’s fewer mouths to feed. • Ability to splurge: On the other side of the financial coin, having fewer people for the holidays means one can indulge on items that may not be possible when hosting a crowd. Therefore, if chicken was normally on the menu, it could be possible to upgrade to a roast or something indulgent like lobster and other seafood. In addition, a small holiday celebration may free up the budget to spend more on gifts. • Special touch: When there are only a few people celebrating, hosts can go the extra mile to give celebrations a special touch.

Create a special holiday dessert even if the recipe is time-consuming. In addition, immediate family can pile into the car to tour the neighborhood decorations, something that may not be as manageable with a motor-

cade of relatives. While holiday celebrations may need to be scaled back this year, small gatherings can produce some pleasant, unanticipated benefits.

How to host virtual holiday celebrations

he 2020 holiday season figures to be vastly different than seasons past. The novel coronavirus COVID-19 has transformed daily life in many ways. The public has become accustomed to wearing masks while shopping, limiting the number of people in public venues and keeping their distance from friends and loved ones. Many events have been reimagined as virtual celebrations because of social distancing protocols. For those with large families or people with inherent risk factors that make them more susceptible to illness, sharing the holidays over video conferencing apps may be the safest way to go in 2020. The following tips can help holiday hosts make the most of a virtual holiday experience. Pick a bright, festive spot Set up your tablet, smartphone or computer in a bright area with a festive backdrop. You’ll want others who join the virtual hangout to be able to see you clearly. A Christmas tree or a decorated fireplace in the background can set the scene. Choose the right conferencing app

Certain programs may work better than others depending on your needs. For example, if everyone has the same operating system platform (iOS or Android), you may be able to use an app inherent to that system, which won’t require a separate download or login. Apps also may be chosen depending on how many people can be invited in, as some set limits. Do your homework and conduct a test run prior to the holidays. Keep props nearby If the goal is to open gifts virtually, be sure to have everyone gathered and gifts nearby so no one is scram-

bling in and out of view. Position the camera at eye level Try to set up the camera so you’re not looking up or down. Practice looking straight into the camera instead of at yourself in the minimized window or even others on the screen. This way you’ll appear engaged. Use mute when not speaking Muting yourself (and encouraging others to do the same) when you are not speaking will limit the amount of background

noise. As the host, serve as the moderator and encourage everyone to speak one at a time. Choose a visual cue to signal when someone has the floor to speak, such as raising a hand or even showing a festive picture. Tune into virtual worship While some places of worship have reopened to some capacity, others may still be offering hybrid services. If your place of worship offers services via YouTube or another video platform, gather around and watch together and participate just as if you were there in person. Better yet, share the link with other family and friends so they can tune in as well. Share dinner ‘together’ Set up your camera source so it captures the holiday table. All parties gathering virtually can then sit down to the holiday meal as one and enjoy one of the season’s more endearing traditions. Virtual celebrations may continue through the holiday season. Adapting with some video conferencing tips can ensure everyone enjoys the festivities.

Get Christmas crafty with homemade ornaments

H

andmade gifts, trinkets and treats help make the holiday season special. Although cookies and other baked goods are some of the most popular homemade creations this time of year, gift-givers young and old can put their talents to use with various craft projects. Ornaments and decorations are one such idea. Here are some clever and, not-too-timeconsuming craft projects to try this holiday season. • Mini sleighs: Create miniature replicas of Santa’s famous sleigh. Paint several popsicle sticks to form the main body of the sleigh and glue them together. Put one at the top perpendicular to the others to serve as the steering rudder. Two silver-painted popsicle sticks placed on their thin sides act as the blades of a sled. • Popcorn garland: Garland made of popcorn is a classic handmade holiday project. For a new twist, toss the popcorn with food coloring and allow it to dry before stringing for some bright color on the tree. • Photo ornaments: Print out several different photos that you love. Purchase round or square thin wood pieces from a craft store and attach the photos with Mod Podge®. When dry, drill a hole through the top and thread with twine. • Advent calendar: Make an Advent calendar to count down to Christmas by covering a foam board with

fabric. Use paper tags or small ornaments and write a number on each for each day of the month. Hang these all from the board. As each day passes, move the tag or ornament to the tree. • Wooden snowflakes: Have children collect small twigs from outdoors, as well as holly leaves and some sprigs of evergreen. Arrange similarly sized twigs in the shape of snowflakes and glue together, or tie with twine. Embellish with stickers, glitter, dried berries, and more. • Dough ornaments: Anyone can have fun molding their own ornaments, letting them dry and then painting them. Use cookie cutters to

get perfect holiday shapes. Craft stores sell various types of modeling clays and lightweight modeling materials. Or, make your own salt dough. • Reindeer bottle topper: Put to use any wine corks you have lying around. Attach googly eyes and a small fuzzy nose to the front of a cork. Insert twisted, brown pipe cleaners to make the antlers up top. Add ribbons, small snippets of faux fur or any other extras you desire. • Sweet sentiments: Use old Scrabble® letter tiles to form a favorite holiday phrase, like “Joy to the World.” Glue the tiles together and hang from the tree on a piece of ribbon.
