SMETHPORT — The District VIII 4-H Horse Show was held last month at the Centre Hall Grange Fairgrounds.

Youth from McKean, Potter, Elk, Jefferson, Clearfield, Warren, and Forest counties competed for the top spots for a chance to qualify for the state horse show at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg from Oct. 25 to 27.

McKean County had seven qualifiers who will be competing at the State 4-H Horse Show.

Voters will be taken to a survey site where they can pick their favorite plow. The plow photo that receives the most votes between Oct. 21 and 11:59 p.m. Oct. 27 will be deemed the “Fan Favorite.”

Schools and participants are encouraged to share the link to the contest to promote voting. PennDOT will also post the pictures on Facebook in the album labeled 2019 Paint the Plow – District 2, however responses on social media will not count toward the voting totals this year.

The plows have been on display in their home counties—most at PennDOT’s County Maintenance offices. During the winter weather season, the blades will be used to maintain area roadways.

Along with the “Fan Favorite” award, the blades are also eligible for the “Judges’ Pick” honor that will be determined by a panel of judges.

Body image and breast cancer treatment

The physical changes that can result from breast cancer are wellknown. However, breast cancer also can lead to emotional changes. In fact, treatments that are designed to beat cancer can have negative effects on a woman’s body image and selfesteem.

Body image is a complex post-treatment concern for breast cancer patients and survivors, and one that may not be as widely addressed as other issues. A study titled “Body Image in Younger Breast Cancer Survivors” that was published in the journal Cancer Nursing found that body image is a large concern and has a profound impact on aspects of cancer survivorship, particularly among young breast cancer survivors.

The American Cancer Society notes that many women experience various changes in appearance while undergoing cancer treatments. These can

include anything from changes in weight (increase or decrease), hair loss, surgical removal of breasts, scarring, lack of sexual interest from fluctuating hormones, and much more. Even though health care providers are good at targeting the immediate challenges of the disease, emotional support is not always part of their posttreatment follow-up.

Mary Jane Esplen, a psycho-oncologist at the University of Toronto, says she has heard from breast cancer survivors who have battled with body image after treatment. In various

therapy sessions, Esplen has learned that some women give up swimming and wearing swimsuits, while others avoid mirrors or get dressed in the dark.

Esplen advises that participating in posttreatment therapy and support groups can help women battling body image issues after breast cancer treatment.

It’s important that women undergoing breast cancer treatment recognize that many of the physical effects of treatment are temporary or can be mitigated. For example, hair loss can be traumatic, but with time hair will regrow. In

the interim, women can wear fashionable wigs and head covers.

Some treatmentrelated changes may be permanent. A complete or partial mastectomy can transform the way the breasts look or make them less sensitive to touch. Many women opt to have reconstructive surgery or use a breast prosthesis.

One change women may not anticipate is how chemotherapy can affect their hormone levels and their sexual interest or response.

Being open with a romantic partner about physical and emotional feelings can help couples effectively work together to find various work-arounds to assist with pain, dryness, trouble reaching orgasm, and other sexual issues.

Many women struggle with body image and emotional changes following breast cancer treatment. With patience and a strong support network, various issues can be addressed and possibly remediated.

Breast cancer incidence rates vary greatly across the globe. According to the World Health Organization, 19.3 per 100,000 women in Eastern Africa are diagnosed with breast cancer, while that number is nearly five times greater (89.7 per 100,000 women) in Western Europe. So what’s the reason behind that disparity? While a host of factors, including family history, can contribute to a woman’s risk for developing breast cancer, incidence rates in places like Eastern Africa could be so low due to less awareness of the disease in such countries, where education about the

importance of breast cancer screening might not be as big a priority as it is in other countries, including the United States. As a result, many incidents of breast cancer in less developed countries may go unreported and, ultimately, untreated.

Emphasizing efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer may lead to higher incidence rates in less developed countries, but those same efforts also may compel more women to receive potentially lifesaving breast cancer screenings.

For example, the Cleveland Clinic notes that patients who have knee replacement surgery are usually standing and even moving the joint the day after their surgeries. Within six weeks, those same patients are typically walking comfortably with very little support. While each patient is different, any fears that joint replacement surgery will require patients to be immobile for months after surgery are unwarranted.

Joint replacement surgery also can be a longterm solution, whereas the alternatives might not be.

The Cleveland Clinic says that roughly 85 percent of knee implants will last 20 years, and that life expectancy figures to grow as technology advances.

Cons As beneficial as joint replacement surgery can be, it’s not without

downsides. Cost is one such disadvantage. How much a patient pays for the surgery depends on his or her coverage, but AARP notes that the average knee replacement surgery costs $31,000. Such costs can be prohibitive for aging men and women who are no longer working.

Another potential disadvantage to going under the knife, especially for those who are borderline candidates for replacement surgeries, is the likelihood that surgery won’t have a significant impact on quality of life.

A 2017 study published in the journal BMJ found that knee replacement had minimal effects on quality of life, especially for patients whose arthritis was not severe.

Joint replacement surgeries are common.

When deciding if surgery is their best option, patients should consider the pros and cons of going under the knife before making their final choice.

A young person’s first hunting trip can be an incredible experience, sparking a lifelong love and appreciation for nature and wildlife.

Parents who grew up hunting likely remember their first hunting trip and want to recreate that experience for their own children.

As memorable as a first hunting trip can be, parents of current youngsters might not recall all the pre-trip preparation their own folks did to make that first hunting experience so memorable. Such preparation can ensure today’s youngsters enjoy the same magical experience their parents

• Make sure kids are ready. Kids’ maturity levels merit consideration before taking them hunting for the first time. Children may experience a range of emotions on their first hunting trips. Such emotions can include excitement, nervousness, sadness, and/or guilt. Parents should assess their children’s maturity levels prior to announcing a trip to make sure they’re ready for that emotional roller coaster. Kids mature at their own pace, so assess each child individually, resisting the temptation to assume one child is

ready at a given age because an older sibling was ready at the same age. The American Forest Foundation recommends parents first take their youngsters along as hunting apprentices, which allows them to participate in the rituals of the hunt while their parents can gauge how mature they are to handle the hunt itself.

However, they also believed demonic spirits could follow such a path during Samhain, giving the festival the taste of the macabre that many still enjoy imparting on their Halloween celebrations today.
