Mother Nature cooperates for RidgeWalk and Run participants
WELLSVILLE — While chilly weather greeted the runners and walkers Sunday morning who gathered for the 27th annual RidgeWalk and Run, the sun came out and gave everyone a glorious view of the fall foliage around Alma Hill. “Mother Nature is cooperating a lot, being nicer to us this year than last year,” said event director Jim Helms. That’s because several inches of snow fell the night before last year’s RidgeWalk. Rich Shear, owner of the Shear equestrian farm where all the participants finished their course, is trail chairman. “To be honest, it’s seamless now,” Shear said of the logistics of organizing trails that encompasses 70 different plots and 52 landowners this year. While he makes it sound easy, his team of four to six volunteers work for six or seven weeks clearing trails and ensuring participant’s safety. “We were all out here at 1 a.m. this morning checking the trails to make sure everything was OK,” he said, and their efforts seem to pay off, although with the additional two trails and the changes this year, he was worried about people taking the wrong turns along the way. “They did an awesome job making the trails,” said Teresa Osgood of Bolivar, who has participated for several years with Renee Giardini of West Clarksville. This year Doreen Chaffee of Wellsville joined them, which she said she does occasionally. She was glad she did, expressing her delight at the

The RidgeWalk and Run offers competitive un-paved trail runs of not just 25K, but also 10K and 5K runs as well as a choice of casually walking 15, 9, 6 and 2 miles. There’s even an Active Older Adults event, special for those 55 and older who want to participate but are limited in their mobility. Rich Whiteman has been run chairperson since the event’s inception, and stays busy monitoring the finish line. “He got first in his age group (over 70 years of age) in the annual Marine Corp. Marathon in D.C. last year,” Shear said. “That’s the kind of people we have volunteering for this event.” ON THE GROUNDS, Mark Baker from Eagle Dream Rehabilitation was on hand to showcase the nonprofit organization’s raptors, including barred, horned and screech owls. Hay rides with draft horses from several local farms and other children’s activities kept the youngsters engaged.

The RidgeWalk 25k is part of the USATF Niagara Association Open; USATF Niagara Masters Trail Championship; and the Eastern Grip Series. Amy Lehman, tracking chairperson for the last 11 years, credits the sanction they received in 2017 for the increase in 25K runners this year — with 153 runners, that number was about double last year’s event. While she ensures that volunteers keep things moving as participants come off the trails to get their cinch bags with a T-shirt, water bottle and ball cap, her critical responsibility is ensuring that the 853 runners and walkers that participated this year and headed up the trails, came back off the trails as well.
In the main tent, Casual Reply entertained with their acoustic music. There was wine tasting from NYS wineries and the taps from the Wellsville Brewing Company were kept busy. Jones Memorial Hospital Physical Therapy Department supplied information, apples, thermal lunch bags, water bottles and massagers and the Finger Lakes Trail Conference was there with information on their offerings. In addition to a lunch supplied by Texas Hots of Wellsville, there were baked goods donated by JMH staff, and plenty of healthy snacks that runners and walkers availed themselves, of while waiting for the awards to be given out. It was also a chance to allow everyone the opportunity to celebrate the good they did for themselves and for the community. “serene, calming experience” and the sense of community. “We look so forward to this event which supports the wellness activities,” she said. The proceeds, along with the 5K Glow Walk and Run held in the Spring, help support the hospital’s wellness program. “Wellness isn’t always about physical fitness, its overall health too,” Benedict was quick to point out. She thanked the committee members that have been with the event for years, saying that most aren’t even hospital employees. “We’re happy to help this community,” she said. It’s the community, she pointed out, by participating in the two major wellness program events, that help support things like health fairs with free screenings and providing blood pressure monitoring equipment for those who can’t afford them. They encourage blood donations with Wellsville Chamber of Commerce gift cards, and they provide maps of walking trails in Wellsville. This year, they’re fixing the Bolivar Road trail so the walkway goes under the bridge, targeting the safety of walkers and runners who use the Riverwalk Trail. It took 150 to 200 volunteers to make the event a success, and when asked when the committee would begin planning for the next year, Helms laughed. “We’re already planning the next one,” he said. Judging from the smiles on hundreds of faces of those who participated this year, they’re looking forward to it, too.

Almost 200 candidates on ballot across Allegany County this election
By CINDY WAGNER BELMONT — Towns and villages across Allegany County have 184 candidates is running for 153 offices, and the town of Cuba has one of the most contested elections for councilman in the county. With only two positions up for grabs, there are four residents vying for the slots. Running on the Republican line are Melodie Farwell and Richard Patterer, the current dog control officer, who is also running on the Independence line with Michael M. Weber. Helms named CFO of Jones Memorial and St. James hospitals
WELLSVILLE — Jones Memorial and St. James hospitals announced Friday that James H. Helms has been named chief financial officer, effective Oct. 27. Helms takes on the dual role as CFO of St. James in Hornell and Jones Memorial, where he currently is vice president of finance. Prior to his current role at Jones he served as their director of health information management/ revenue cycle and as the corporate compliance officer. In this new position, Helms will oversee the financial operations of both hospitals, including financial policies, financial strategic planning, cost
management, budgets, financial reports, funding streams, and the finance staff at both locations. He will also retain some of his financial and operational responsibilities at Jones while taking on some operational roles at St. James. “This strategic appointment will improve our respective
operations,” said Eva Benedict, CEO of Jones. “Jim is well respected at both organizations, and has had great success working with the Jones team in stabilizing our financial position.” St. James president and CEO Bryan O’Donovan said he worked with the leadership at Jones and the University of Rochester Medical Center to create a position that will benefit both hospitals. The hospitals are both affiliated with UR Medicine. “Jim is the right fit, and has extensive experience at both entities and is well versed in leading hospitals through transition,” O’Donovan said

WELLSVILLE — Cornell Cooperative Extension in Allegany County has been awarded $300,000 in federal funding to promote healthy diets and active lifestyles. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday announced a total of $12.9 million for 16 non-profit organizations to benefit households eligible to receive or that are receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. WELLSVILLE — When Marty Tezak of Wellsville died unexpectedly last year, her family asked that memorials be made to the Jones Memorial Hospital Hemlock Twig. Tezak was a longtime member of the Hemlock Twig and its treasurer for many years.
“The Hemlock Twig appreciates that so many gifts were made in memory of Marty,” said Caren Gibson, president. “I believe that this is the first time a family has asked for memorials to a particular Twig and we are grateful to Marty’s family for understanding how important the Twig

Did you know? Breast cancer incidence rates vary greatly across the globe. According to the World Health Organization, 19.3 per 100,000 women in Eastern Africa are diagnosed with breast cancer, while that number is nearly five times greater (89.7 per 100,000 women) in Western Europe. So what’s the reason behind that disparity? While a host of factors, including family history, can contribute to a woman’s risk for developing breast cancer, incidence rates in places like Eastern Africa could be so low due to less awareness of the disease

in such countries, where education about the importance of breast cancer screening might not be as big a priority as it is in other countries, including the United States. As a result, many incidents of breast cancer in less developed countries may go unreported and, ultimately, untreated. Body image and breast cancer treatment
The physical changes that can result from breast cancer are wellknown. However, breast cancer also can lead to emotional changes. In fact, treatments that are designed to beat cancer can have negative effects on a woman’s body image and self-esteem. Body image is a complex post-treatment concern for breast cancer patients and survivors, and one that may not be as widely addressed as other issues. A study titled “Body Image in Younger Breast Cancer Survivors” that was published in the journal Cancer Nursing found that body image is a large concern and has a profound impact on aspects of cancer survivorship, particularly among young breast cancer survivors. The American Cancer Society notes that many women experience various changes in appearance while undergoing cancer treatments. These can include anything from

El Dia de los Muertos In parts of Mexico and Latin America, El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is celebrated each year in early November. Families may burn candles and incense in an effort to help their deceased relatives and ancestors find their way home. Guy Fawkes Day For many years, England had reason to celebrate around October 31, but those celebrations did not mirror the Halloween festivities familiar to those across the pond. While recent years have witnessed more and
more Brits adopting the Americanized celebration of Halloween, for many the true holiday this time of year will always be Guy Fawkes Day. Celebrated on November 5, Guy Fawkes Day is a commemoration of the foiled Gunpowder Plot. Smithsonian notes that this was a failed attempt by disgruntled Catholics to blow up the British Parliament building while King James I was inside. Fireworks, parades and bonfires marked Guy Fawkes Day celebrations,
