Shipping containers provide exciting new form of applied learning
ALFRED, – A new hands-on project at Alfred State College’s Wellsville campus has students really thinking outside the container. This semester, students in various majors began working on several shipping containers as part of a “reuse/ repurpose/recycle” initiative that incorporates sustainable and green-building practices, according to Jack Jones, chair of the Building Trades Department. The purpose of the project, Jones said, is to determine if shipping containers can be repurposed into highefficiency housing or office units, and also to provide students with a new form of applied learning. One of the main goals of this project is to create a zeroenergy facility, which means it produces at least as much energy as it consumes. “This project aligns with the governor’s new energy initiatives, which aim to drive New York’s energy consumption to renewable sources,” explained Jones. “The home will be outfitted with a powerful photovoltaic system and a solar water heater.” High-efficiency fixtures and appliances, Jones said, will be used throughout. “We are designing the home with a battery bank for off-grid operation,” he said. “However, we will also include a utility connection for selling excess power generation and for a back-up power supply.” With the project being so new and so different from what has been done before, Jones noted, “We’re just trying to learn what works, what doesn’t work, what we can do in the future, and what really doesn’t make sense to do. It’s really a research project on our part to determine

whether this is a viable option for housing or not, and whether it fits into our educational program.” The project involves the talents of students in several different majors, including building trades: building construction; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning; and electrical construction and maintenance electrician. Supporters so far include the State University of New York, which is funding the project; SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson; the Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc., which has postponed other construction projects to accommodate this one; and Mach Architecture, which has assisted with the design and engineering of the project. “I am so proud of the students and faculty at Alfred State for conceiving a creative project that combines applied learning and sustainability,” said SUNY Chancellor Johnson. “It’s more
proof that, each and every day, SUNY is helping lead the way toward a more sustainable, energy-efficient world, while also providing the types of hands-on learning experiences that lead to higher-paying jobs for our students.” Another big supporter is Alfred State President Dr. Skip Sullivan, who said, “This project offers Alfred State students an incredible and unique opportunity for handson learning. We are grateful to SUNY, Chancellor Johnson, the Educational Foundation, Mach Architecture, and so many others who have shown their support and enthusiasm for this project. We can’t wait to see the finished product!” One of the most appealing aspects of the project, Jones said, is its unconventional nature. While students are still gaining traditional real-world skills working on houses for the Wellsville community, this project gives them a chance to broaden their horizons.
“They get to use tools they wouldn’t normally use, they get to work with materials they wouldn’t normally use,” Jones said. “They’ll be doing a little more welding here than what we usually have in our program, a lot more metalcutting, and just experiencing a different way that systems go together. This job will be more commercial application, so a lot more metal work, steel studs, that sort of thing. It’s a really good supplement to what we already do.” Students are understandably very excited about the project. Nathan Hayes, a building trades: building construction major from Bath, said, “My favorite part is getting an idea of how you can take everyday items, repurpose them, upcycle them, and turn them into something very useful that’s going to leave a lasting impression on the campus. It’s something you can look back on and be really proud of your craftsmanship.”

Courtney DeRusha, a masonry student from Corning, said, “One of the really exciting things about this project is that it’s been developed by a team of experts, engineers, and architects, but there’s a lot of innovation, there’s a lot of experimentation. We don’t know exactly how we’re going to tackle every problem, and to have all of these brains talking about that together with the help of our really knowledgeable instructors is exciting.” The containers are presently located in the 35,000-squarefoot Workforce Development Center, which serves as the home of the building trades: building construction program. Currently, the college has four shipping containers for students to work on, three of which are 20 feet long and one that is 40 feet long. “Altogether, with the enclosed space in the middle, we’ll have about a 1,200-square-foot building when we’re done,” Jones said. “This is really a larger and more complex home than you would typically consider for containers. We hope to learn lessons that can be applied to temporary housing, disaster relief shelters, and housing in developing countries.” The end goal for this project, Jones said, is to convert the containers into a new demonstration home and welcome center on the Alfred campus. The project should take one academic year to complete. “I think it’s a really cool project. It’s something that’s out of the ordinary,” said Jones, who added, “It’s a really good option for us to really just stretch the students and make them think about why systems have to work the way they do.”

‘Steel Magnolias’ performances in Cuba feature well-known local actresses

CUBA — Over the past 30 years, audiences at large and small theaters across the country have laughed and cried with a group of six Southern women who helped each other through the humorous and hard times of life. Audiences will get to share in the adventure of the “Steel Magnolias” women when the play is staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Palmer Opera House at 12 W. Main St. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $5 for children in kindergarten through 12th grade. Directed by Eric Van Druff and produced by Michele Conklin, the Robert Harling comedy/ drama will take audiences to a beauty shop in the South, which serves as the single set for the play staged at the opera house. Van Druff said the opera house decided to present the play in honor of the 30th anniversary of the “Steel Magnolias” movie made from the stage production. “It’s more intimate (than the movie version), they don’t have the men, they don’t have Jackson, they don’t have Drum, it’s just the six women in it,” Van Druff explained. “That’s kind of the thrust of where I’ve gone with this. I feel the entire play is based on the personal relationships of the five best friends and the (younger) star, Shelby.” With that in mind, the director spent a lot of time working on the relationships between the characters on stage.

“We did a lot of time delving into thinking through the past and thinking through what their characters had gone through,” he explained. “We did a lot of background studies making sure they understood the true Southern woman.” Van Druff said the single set is the product of borrowing a number of items from the community, including salon chairs and other items. “We’re borrowing from anywhere and everywhere we can,” he said with a laugh. “Cuba hospital has donated a couple of small swivel chairs to us, the Palmer has a lot of stuff and my cast has brought in a lot of things. I’m contacting beauty shops to find posters and hair pictures. “It’s kind of like typical community theater — beg, borrow or steal to keep your costs down,” he joked. Van Druff has also
focused on directing his cast to personalize their roles. “I said,‘Take pieces, take memories, take visions of your own life and intersperse those (into the role) because it will mean more to you and you’ll be better in your delivery if you can relate it to something in your own life.” Van Druff said his work has been made easier as he has “great actresses across the board.”

Wellsville Ridge Walk celebrates 27 years on Sunday

WELLSVILLE — The RidgeWalk and Run is a perennial favorite of local residents, typically attracting over a thousand people to the highest ridge in Western New York. This year, the 27th annual the event will take place Oct. 20, when participants will gather at Wellsville Central School, 126 W. State St. for the 9 a.m. start. “Plans are going very well,” said Jim Helms, event director. “Mother Nature is cooperating a lot, being nicer to us this year than last year. … We’re praying for the weather to cooperate.” A crew of four to six volunteers has been working on clearing the trails for “six or seven weeks,” according to Helms. It takes a lot of clearing, since the trails encompass 70 different plots and 52 landowners this year. “All the trails are the same this year, but the 25K is a little different,” Helms said. Because of a slight change in the trail for that run, “great views that runners haven’t seen in a while” will be visible. An adjustment will also allow the runners to get off the road sooner than before so that they can get out and enjoy themselves more readily. The event, which benefits the Jones Memorial Hospital Wellness Program, offers participants several options, from competitive running to leisurely strolls. The RidgeWalk and Run offers competitive unpaved trail runs of 25K, 10K, and 5K as well as a choice of casually walking 15, 9, 6 and 2 miles. There’s even an Active Older Adults event, special for those 55 and older who want to participate but are limited in their mobility. Since 2017 when they rededicated the event, the RidgeWalk runs are all USATF Niagara sanctioned. The RidgeWalk 25k is part of the USATF Niagara Association Open; USATF Niagara Masters

Regardless of the activity, the RidgeWalk gives everyone the opportunity to get out of the house and move around, enjoy the weather, the beautiful colors of fall, feel the community spirit and support a good, local cause. This year, the first 1,000 registrants can look better than ever while doing that – with artwork from a local student that adorns RidgeWalk swag. This year the committee decided to reach out to Allegany County students for the 2019 RidgeWalk design. Belfast Area High School’s Hailey Mitchell won for her digital design that encompassed both the event and the fall spectrum of colors. RidgeWalk begins with a pre-event dinner Oct. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Grill, located in the Wellsville Country Club. It will include a pasta buffet, Caesar salad and desert for $25 per person. From the school, buses will transport runners and walkers to their various starting points, but regardless of where they start, they all finish at the Shear equestrian farm on Alma Hill. In addition to lunch, prizes will be awarded, and music, entertainment, health screenings and kid’s activities will allow everyone the chance to celebrate the good they did for themselves and for the community. One of the things Helms said they are particularly proud of this year is their efforts to make Wellsville more walkable. The proceeds from the Wellsville RidgeWalk and Run, 100% of which are donated to the JMH Wellness Program, will continue to assist in making Wellsville’s sidewalk repairs and a planned walkway underneath the Bolivar Road bridge. 200 volunteers to make the event a success, and when asked when the committee would begin planning for the next year, Helms laughed. “We’re already planning the next one,” he said. The event began in 1993. After 21 years run by an allvolunteer committee and the Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce, the event came under the direction of UR/ Jones Memorial Hospital. At the time, the hospital was in search of a signature event that could help fund programs.

Arnold said she remembers her nephew’s early pumpkin carvings at his home. “It was very embarrassing, we all carved pumpkins (with basic designs) and he’d turn his around and it was a haunted house,” she remembered. “He’s always been very artistic.” She noted another nephew, who is a videographer, sent a video of Jones carving a pumpkin and sent it to Food Network earlier this year. The network liked what they saw and called him to travel to the competition, which will be televised in 2020. When asked if he hoped his Food Network appearance will open doors for him, Jones replied, “It already has. I’ve been invited to

Jones later replied, “This belongs to Grandma Butts.” Staff who commented on activities and how they benefit the residents included Dr. Rajan Gulati, medical director at the facility. “We do have a lot of people who normally don’t go out so this is a social activity for them,” he said. “It’s good for their mental well-being because they can watch what is going on. We have a lot of social activities for them.” Activity director Barbi Baccus said Jones’ visit to the facility, and his unique presentation, was very fortuatous, thanks to Grandma Butts. “Yeah, it kind of fell into my lap,” Baccus said of the visit. Community transformation leader returning to Allegany County
WELLSVILLE — A key leader in community transformation and revival will be returning to Allegany and upper Potter (Pa.) counties this month to share what he says God has done in rejuvenating a Kentucky county. Lonnie Riley of Meridzo Ministries in Lynch, Ky., who spoke in Wellsville and Bath last fall, will return to the area during the Oct. 18-21 weekend for public, spiritual and pastors gatherings. Riley and his wife, Belinda, felt God's calling to the Kentucky community in 1999, leading to the launch of many multi-faceted ministries, including several involving business outreach and economic development. Some dozen ministries have been birthed during this spiritual revival in Harlan County and
beyond which, like Allegany County, is part of the nation's Appalachian Region. These have included two churches; agribusinesses; an equestrian ministry; veterinary practice; community and teen centers; a coffee shop; a convenience store and gas station; and two multi-functional retreat and education centers, including adaptive re-use of both an abandoned community hospital and a college campus. The projects have resulted from extensive prayer and a multitude of circumstances and benefactors the Lord has provided over the years, according to Riley, who will describe many of these occurrences. His first appearance will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at the Headwaters Transformation Conference at Zion Christian Fellowship, 835
PA-49, Ulysses, Pa. A free-will offering will be taken at the public presentation, with registration for the entire Thursday-Saturday gathering available at headwaters conference.com. Renodin Foundation sees growing need with grant recipients in region

OLEAN — During each successive year that officials with the Dr. Lyle F. Renodin Foundation have prepared to provide grants for charitable programs and projects, they’ve noticed the need has continued to grow. This year’s fall grant cycle for the nonprofit organization has answered the growing need for help once again by providing 21 grants totaling to $37,000 to organizations in New York state, including Allegany County, and Pennsylvania. Laura Whitford, president of the foundation and St. Elizabeth Mission Society in Allegany, said all of the recipients had requested about the same amount of funds
and therefore received the same-sized grants. “The Renodin Foundation continues to review more and more requests each grant cycle,” Whitford said. “This fall we received over $100,000 in requests, which included four organizations who were new to us. “The needs are great in our community, and our board prioritizes grants to programs that provide some kind of benevolence — food, shelter, clothing, utilities assistance, transportation to medical appointments and brown bag lunches for kids on weekends.” Others who include Mary Jo Black, chairman of Renodin, said the charitable purposes are carried out in a manner consistent with the tradition of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, who founded

To date, DEC has used funds from patch sales to purchase material for the construction of a boardwalk and pit privy in Texas Hollow State Forest, foot bridges on the Northville Placid Trail and Catskill Visitor Center, maintenance of Otter Creek Horse Trails, a horse mounting platform to improve access for people with disabilities at Brookfield Horse Assembly Area, and lean-tos in the High Peaks Wilderness. Patch funds were also used to purchase materials for the new mountain bike trails at Elm Ridge Wild Forest. Since 2007, sales of the trail supporter patch have raised more than $41,000.
