Hart Comfort House in drive to build volunteer support
WELLSVILLE — A village hospice, Hart Comfort House, has announced plans to expand its base of volunteers in a move to maintain what the facility calls an adequate level of care for residents in the last days or weeks of their lives. Hart House director Scott Swift and volunteer
coordinator JoAnne White underscored the difficulties they face in providing resident care as current volunteers, fearful of possible exposure to the coronavirus pandemic or traveling to winter retreats, decline to return. “Right now, we have 88 volunteers on the resident-
care list,” the administrators said in a statement, “but, unfortunately, only 65 of them have returned. “Some have left due to their age and being uncomfortable out among others. Some of them left because of personal health concerns, or their families’ concerns about their
returning to the house. And of course, with winter approaching, we have our snow birds.” The administrators said they would accept as many volunteers as they could attract. “To have 80 to 100 on the roster who can be active would be wonderful,” they

Swift and White stressed measures they said they were taking to limit exposure to COVID-19 infection. They said hand sanitizers had been placed at each entrance; visitors and volunteers were required to wear masks at all times. They said the standard COVID questionnaire protocol was being followed to the letter and that anyone entering the house had to be fever-free. “We also are wiping down every flat surface,” they said, “as well as door handles, telephones, etc., at 3 p.m. and 3 a.m. daily. We no longer use cloth towels in the kitchen and all dishes must be washed in the dishwasher.” Volunteers do sundry jobs. They cook meals. They do laundry. After a period of training they administer, when needed, under-the-tongue doses of morphine. They keep detailed records of medications, of mood swings, of food and liquids taken or refused. But the chief reason the volunteers stand watch at Hart Comfort House, typically in four-hour shifts, is to provide companionship. They hold a resident’s hand. They smooth a pillow. They reposition a head or limbs. They converse quietly. The volunteers for the most part are in their 50s and 60s. A good number of them are widows or widowers, and, for whatever reason, women seem to be in the majority. Regardless of gender, they come from all walks of life. Some are
homemakers. Others are active or retired shop keepers, nurses, doctors, librarians, teachers. Now in its eighth year of service, Hart Comfort House, on a wooded knoll abutting East State Street, is the legacy of the Wellsville couple who originally had owned it, Mary Ellen and Gerald Hart. No more than two of the terminally ill can be accommodated at any one time, and their official designation is, as indicated, residents, not patients. The house is supported by charitable giving and the work of the unpaid volunteers. It provides care without cost to residents or their families. The two administrators and an overnight nurse are the only paid employees. Dr. William Coch of Alfred Station serves unpaid as medical director. He is a volunteer retired from family practice in Andover. “When faced with the dilemma of what to do when there are no more drugs or procedures likely to help,” Coch said. “Many patients now choose palliative care where the focus is on relieving symptoms (like pain, nausea or shortness of breath), maintaining dignity, avoiding burdensome tests or treatments and preparing for life’s end both psychologically and spiritually. “We can’t always choose how and where we die,” he said. “But we know there are both good deaths and bad deaths. ... The staff and volunteers at Comfort House work to provide the setting and opportunity for each resident and their families to celebrate their lives and have the most comfortable and dignified death possible.”
