McKean County farmers struggle with crop damage caused by bears

The black bear is a common species in Pennsylvania, with population growth more than quadrupling over the past five decades. According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission website, “Black Bear numbers have increased substantially in Pennsylvania, from around 4,000 in the 1970s to around 18,000 today. A dramatic growth has provided more opportunities for people to see bears, which is an experience many treasure, and bear hunting has greatly improved.” While bear harvests for the state have set records in 2011 (4,350 bears killed during hunting season) and 2014 (3,366 bears harvested in 56 counties), the same cannot be said in McKean County. In fact, the bear harvest in McKean County has declined since 2011, which was the peak harvest for our area with 258 bears harvested. Last year’s bear harvest was 67 bears. With an increased population and less harvest during hunting season, farmers have seen a significant growth in bear damage to crops. On Sept. 18, Smethport farmer Gary Isadore wrote a letter to the editor chronicling his issues with bears in his corn. “I am writing to you about the bear problem in McKean County. Myself, along with other farmers, are just watching the bears destroy our corn fields. It costs us $500 a ton plus fertilizer, $200 a bag for corn, plus time and the fuel to prepare the ground to plant the crop,” Isadore wrote. “Then we pay good money for spray to kill weeds. Then as a farmer, you hope that you get a good growing season to get a terrific crop of corn. The last two years

have been bad, due to excessive rain. So corn has been planted late, increasing the time that it sits in the field, waiting to mature, and giving the bears time to destroy the crop. “I am harvesting my corn this week (Sept. 18, 2019). It should not be mature until the first week of October. If I wait to harvest, the bear will have all of the corn. It is hard on the silo, with all of the juices that are going to be in the corn.” Isadore also wrote of the possibility that a game warden can bring a trap to catch the bear, but he believes the bears have been in the trap before and tend to stay away from them as a result. Isadore’s letter closes with suggestions to help address the bear problem, noting that changes to the time when bear season is run and the length of the season would be helpful

and that the Game Commission paying the farmers for crop damage would be another possibility to help farmers struggling with bears damaging their crops. When contacted via phone, Isadore noted that the bear problem has been on the rise for more than this growing season. “It seems like it’s been getting worse the last two or three years, but this year it’s just been unbearable,” Isadore said. “I planted a nice six-acre field of corn, but I had to chop it off before it was really ready to chop. There had to be three or four bear in there at one time.” Between weather and bear problems, his harvest was not nearly what he hoped to get. “The weather really hurt my cornfield bad this year, but some corn was still good,” he explained. “(Another farmer)

They about annihilated what was left.” Isadore lamented, “Here in McKean and this end of Potter County, they need to do something. They need to extend bear season, they have got to do something.” Pennsylvania Game Commission Communications Director Travis Lau confirmed that bears damaging crops has been an increasing problem over the past three years throughout McKean County. “Wardens have been getting more calls regarding nuisance bear complaints and relocating bears,” Lau confirmed. “We have received bear complaints involving bears getting into crops throughout all of McKean County, not just one isolated area.” Farmers may see a difference after hunting season this year, as multiple changes have been approved for the 2019 season. “This year, we have added a new 7-day October muzzleloader season for bear, a new 3-day special firearms season (junior/senior/active military, etc.) for bear; added a week to the archery bear season; and added the new Saturday deer-opener to the extended bear season,” Lau said. “All of these changes affect McKean County. The changes approved for 2019 are the largest suite of bear season changes ever introduced in a single year.” For Isadore, the news of change to the hunting season was good. However, he is still waiting to hear if he’ll get any reprieve from his crop insurance for the poor harvest. It will be next year before Isadore can really tell if the changes to the hunting season help protect his crops.

Causer Announces $50,000 Grant to McKean County Conservation District to Target Invasive Plant Species

HARRISBURG – Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) announced today the McKean County Conservation District will receive $50,000 in funding from the state Department of Agriculture to assist with two projects designed to control and eliminate infestations of invasive plant species in the region. “Non-native, invasive plants can cause serious problems for reforestation efforts and other environmental

equally between two projects. The ﬁrst will target a nonnative, invasive and noxious weed called goatsrue, which initially appeared in McKean County 20 years ago. In recent years, the plant – which is poisonous to livestock – has spread to Cameron, Elk and Warren counties. So far, those infestations are smaller than most of what is found in McKean County, and ofﬁcials hope to stop the spread and get rid of the plant before it causes any further

damage. The project would be conducted on public and private lands in Cameron, Elk, McKean and Warren counties. The second will target the non-native, invasive Japanese knotweed. Clearing this plant would increase the effectiveness of reforestation efforts on commercial timber lands and improve recreational opportunities in the Tionesta Creek watershed, including improving watercraft and swimming access as well as ﬁshing. The

infestation is classiﬁed as a small, satellite population of the plant. According to conservation district ofﬁcials, the Tionesta Watershed is one of very few watersheds in the state that could be devoid of Japanese knotweed with successful implementation of the eradication plan to be funded in part by the grant funding. The project would be conducted on public and private lands in Warren, Forest, Elk and McKean counties.

addition to providing free wellness screenings at events throughout the community, RidgeWalk monies have been used to purchase blood pressure machines and hydration stations at both JMH and the Wellsville YMCA. The latest project is now underway. Targeting the safety of walkers and runners who use the Riverwalk Trail, JMH Wellness funds are helping extend the trail so that it goes under the bridge on Route 417 and resumes on the other side of the highway, expanding our walkable community and improving safety. 7 uses for fallen leaves

By the time autumn hits full swing, many trees will have shed their leaves for the season, and the last vestiges of red, yellow and orange magic will have faded to brown. Raking, blowing and collecting leaves becomes the primary chores of lawn and yard maintenance, and presents most homeowners with large piles of gathered leaves to tend to. It is impossible to count just how many leaves fall to the ground each year, or just how many pounds of leaves get collected curbside, but the numbers are substantial. Cleaning up leaves is considerable work, but not all of those leaves need to be carted away. In fact, there are several different uses of leaves that can be beneﬁcial. 1. Spread leaves as a protective mulch to cover tender perennials or root crops/bulbs in the ground. The leaves will form a natural insulating cover that keeps the soil and the

plants within a bit warmer over winter. 2. Create a pile of leaves that will break down and form a crumbly, compostlike material called leaf mold. Even though leaf mold may sound like a blight, it’s actually a good amendment to garden soil, improving its structure and ability to hold water. Leaf mold also attracts beneﬁcial organisms that are vital in healthy soil. 3. Brown leaves can be added to green materials in compost piles to improve the health of the compost being formed. According to the healthy living resource Care2, the ideal ratio is 75 percent brown to 25 percent green materials in compost. Turn compost piles regularly to aerate them. 4. Store dried, mulched leaves in a dry spot so they can be used in the spring as a weed barrier for spring plantings. They will keep weeds at bay and help retain soil moisture to ensure small sprouts have the resources to

grow. 5. Use shredded leaves as a lawn supplement. Pass a lawn mower over leaves left on the lawn to break them down into pieces too small to rake. This will help keep the lawn healthy throughout the winter without blocking out needed sunlight. 6. Bag dried leaves and pack them tightly together in cold areas of the home, such as basements or garages. They can act as added insulation. Bags of leaves also can be placed around planting containers to protect them from frost. 7. Gather a few of the best-looking leaves and preserve them. Use an iron on a low setting and press leaves between two pieces of waxed paper until the waxed paper seals together. Or use clear contact paper to achieve the same effect. Fallen leaves can be used in many different ways throughout the year.

How to protect wood ﬂoors from inclement weather

Wood floors are a worthwhile investment that can improve the beauty and function of just about any room in a home. Even though wood floors are durable, and new protective treatments help seal out many of the things that may have damaged floors in the past, homeowners still need to prioritize protecting their hardwood floors. Certain seasons of the year can be more harsh on wood floors than others. For example, seasons characterized by moisture and precipitation, particularly the early spring, winter and fall, can be hard on wood floors. The experts at ServiceMaster Clean say that cold, snowy days can damage wood floors, and Lumber Liquidators agrees that winter weather can be harsh on flooring. Homeowners need not give up on hardwood if they live in an area that sees all four seasons. They just need to take a few steps to keep floors looking beautiful. • Clean up the salt. Salt that keeps sidewalks and streets clear of snow and ice inadvertently gets tracked inside a home. Hard chunks of salt can scratch wood floors, and, if left to sit, that salt can eventually cause white marks and other stains. Routinely vacuuming and sweeping up salt is necessary to protect wood floors. • Invest in shoe

Hardwood floorboards are installed to accommodate minor temperature and humidity fluctuations. This is typically a range of between 60 and 80 degrees F with a relative humidity range of 35 to 55 percent, advises ServiceMaster. • Use the right cleaning products. Avoid excessive water to clean wood floors, and select soaps that are specially designed for wood flooring. Consult with the flooring manufacturer for a list of detergents that are safe to use. With proper care, hardwood flooring can survive rain, snow and cold weather.

How to approach donating noncash items

Donations come in many forms. Charitable organizations can always beneﬁt from ﬁnancial donations. But cold hard cash isn’t the only way to help a favorite charity. Noncash donations can include everything from clothing to electronics to art and collectibles and much more. In fact, such donations are very common. According to the Internal Revenue Service, more than 15 million clothing donations were reported on tax returns in 2016. Many people have items they want to donate to a good cause. But donors might want to do a little legwork before making noncash donations to ensure their generosity does as much good as possible. • Determine the usefulness of noncash items. The organization Charity Navigator, which is one of the

world’s largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities, notes that most charities can only make use of new, unused or nearly new items. If necessary, work with the charity you hope to donate to so you only drop off items the charity can ultimately utilize. • Don’t give up on items deemed not useful. Just because a charity cannot accept a certain item does not mean the charity cannot ultimately benefit from that item. Items that have too much wear and tear for charities can still be sold, and donors can turn the proceeds from those sales into financial donations to their favorite charities. Items can be sold at garage sales, at flea markets, online through websites like Ebay, or even via the local newspaper classifieds section. • Donate locally. Charity Navigator

notes that some organizations offer to pick up large noncash donations, such as furniture. By choosing to donate such items to local charities, donors can save the organizations the potentially costly expense of extensive travel. That means donations go that much further. • Accept your tax deduction. There’s no shame in accepting some goodwill in return for your charitable efforts. Portion control is a big part of a healthy diet. In fact, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases notes that, when it comes to maintaining a healthy weight, how much food a person eats is just as important as what he or she eats. The NIDDK notes that a portion is how much food a person chooses to eat at one time, while a serving

size is the amount of food listed on the Nutrition Facts label. The portions a person eats may or may not match a serving size. That’s because a healthy portion size is typically based on various factors, such as age, weight and gender, unique to individuals. Should calories come into play when determining healthy portion sizes? Calories definitely merit consideration when determining healthy portion sizes. However, the amount of calories a person needs is based on a number of factors, including how physically active that person is. The NIDDK notes that a 150-pound woman who exercises vigorously throughout the week will need more calories than a woman about the

same size who is not as physically active. When trying to determine their calorie needs, men and women should consult with their physicians, who will consider their lifestyle, age, medical history, and other factors before advising patients about how much they should eat. What if I am still hungry after reducing portion sizes? It’s likely that people accustomed to big portions will still be hungry as their bodies adjust to reduced portion sizes.

The convenience of bringing pets along may outweigh the costs associated with traveling with pets. And pet owners may rest easy knowing their pets are safe. People who plan to travel overseas with their pets may have to take some pre-travel steps in order to take their furry friends along. The U.S. Department of State recommends pet owners visit the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service website to review the requirements for taking pets overseas. Certification to travel with certain animals varies from country to country. Some countries may need particular documentation, while others may require a quarantine period or inspection by the visiting country’s veterinary staff. Animals coming into the United States from elsewhere are subject to specific health requirements before being allowed entry into the country. To facilitate the process, some pet owners have inquired as to a “pet passport.” A pet passport was popularized in the European Union so that certain pets could travel freely through EU member countries. The passport is valid for the life of the pet as long as its rabies vaccine is kept up-to-date. The United States does not issue pet passports. Many countries require proof that an animal is healthy, which is known as a veterinary or sanitary certificate and is issued by a veterinarian, before allowing pets entry. Additional information, such as proof of tapeworm testing and treatment as well as a “Declaration of Non-Commercial Transport,” which is proof that the animal is traveling and not being sold or given away, may be needed. Other APHISrequired certifications also may be mandated, and particular breeds or species of animals may not be permissible for transport. When compiling a pet passport for travel, travelers are strongly urged to visit www.aphis. usda.gov. Poached Eggs, Asparagus and Chorizo Serves 4 11⁄2 tablespoons olive oil 1⁄2 cup coarse fresh bread crumbs (see cooking tip) 4 ounces Spanish chorizo, cut into 1⁄2-inch cubes (use the Spanish-style chorizo in casing, not loose Mexicanstyle chorizo) 11⁄4 pound medium asparagus Kosher salt 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, diced 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 2 to 3 tablespoons white

Heat the remaining 1⁄2 tablespoon oil in the same frying pan set over medium heat. When hot, add the chorizo and stir until lightly browned, 3 minutes. Remove and set aside. (Chorizo can be prepared 1 hour ahead; leave at room temperature.) 3. Trim and discard 2 to 3 inches of the tough bases of the asparagus spears. Add the asparagus and 1 teaspoon salt to a large frying pan ﬁlled halfway with simmering water. Cook until the spears are just tender, 4 minutes. Drain and toss the asparagus in a large bowl with the butter and

lemon juice. Season with salt and cover with foil. 4. Bring a large frying pan ﬁlled halfway with water to a boil. Add the vinegar and gently break each egg into a saucer and slide it into the water. Swirl the water with a wooden spoon while the eggs are cooking. Cook until the eggs are just set but the yolks are still soft, 3 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain well. (If you have an egg poacher, cook according to the manufacturer’s directions until the eggs are set.) 5. Mound some asparagus spears on each of four dinner plates. Top each serving with a poached egg and sprinkle with the chorizo and bread crumbs. Season the eggs with several grinds of pepper and a pinch of salt and serve. Cooking tip: To make bread crumbs, use a 1- to 2-dayold, good-quality peasant or country bread with crusts removed. Process large chunks of it in a food processor to make coarse crumbs. Sourdough bread works particularly well.

hyaluronic acid, glycerin and sodium hyaluronate. These are known as humectants. In addition, the National Center of Biotechnology Information says that aloe can improve water content in the skin. Once water is bound to the skin, a moisturizer will prevent the water from leaving it. Look for moisturizers with natural oils and butters to help retain moisture, like cocoa butter. The following are some additional methods to maximize hydration and moisturize skin.

• Take warm showers, as hot water can strip the natural lipids from skin and cause dryness. • Avoid too many alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic drinks are diuretics that can cause the body to lose water, advises WebMD. • Use a humidifier indoors to amp up the moisture level in the air. • Enjoy water-rich foods, like watermelon, cucumber, grapes, and other succulent fruits and vegetables. • Drink the recommended amount of water per day, and

limit your consumption of caffeinated and sugary beverages. • Work out to improve blood flow and oxygenation in the skin. • Try a facial essence. Facial essences are a principle of Japanese beauty regimens and contain fermented ingredients that support skin penetration and hydration. The differences between vegan and vegetarian diets

Vegan diet While veganism is often mistaken as simply an approach to diet, it is much more than that. The Vegetarian Society notes that vegetarian diets result in 2.5 times less carbon emissions than meat diets. So what do vegetarians eat? A vegetarian diet includes fruits, vegetables, grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, eggs, dairy products, and honey. Vegan and vegetarian diets are healthy approaches to eating that are embraced by millions of people across the globe.
