Pin trail unveiled in McKean County

A postcard, a photograph or any knick knack, no matter how small — these are worth far more than the pocket change they cost. As any souvenir collector knows, these mementos are memories, proof of a day well-lived. Now, thanks to a new program by the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau, visitors to McKean County have a new way to catalog their travels: collectible pins. “We are excited to launch this unique program,” said Linda Devlin, executive director of the ANF Visitors Bureau. “McKean will be the only county in the state of Pennsylvania offering a collectible pin program that brings together ten different historic sites and museums to encourage visitors to explore the entire county.” A launch party for the Historic McKean County Collectible Pin Trail took place Tuesday at the Marilyn Horne Museum & Exhibit Center in Bradford, which is one of 10 locations participating across the county. In addition to the Marilyn Horne Museum, represented on the pin trail are the Kinzua Bridge State Park Gift Shop in Mount Jewett; the ZippoCase Museum, the Penn Brad Oil Museum and the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau Welcome

the public starting today. Representatives of the organizations met Tuesday morning to receive a “startup kit” for the program. The ANF Visitors Bureau covered the cost of the first 100 lanyards and pins for each location. “As many of the locations participating are non-profit organizations the ANFVB has provided the logistical and financial support to guarantee that all of the county’s sites were able to participate,” Devlin said. “As the pins are sold, each location will have their own funds to purchase additional pins.” She explained that the
project began as an idea to promote the smaller sites. Matthew Hileman, executive director of the Marilyn Horne Museum and an executive board member at the ANF Visitors Bureau, brought up a pin program at Disney, and the idea developed from there. The program provides an easy guide for visitors to follow to learn the history of the area. “We have some really rich history in our county,” Devlin said. She added that while some sites on the trail are well known to casual visitors, some are not, and
this will be a fun way to promote those sites. “Tourism is the key to unlocking the economic potential of our communities.” Devlin added. “The pin program will encourage visitors and residents to travel throughout the county, where they will dine, shop, spend dollars at local businesses, and hopefully make plans for a return visit.” Devlin is hopeful that visitors the trail will encourage visitors to stay the night, which is when an area really sees an economic impact. Plus, “They’ll have a
better experience. They’re not rushed,” she added. Most of the sites have regular open hours when visitors can stop. For the Serenity Glass Park, which is outside and does not have staff, pins will be sold at businesses around Port Allegany. Pins will retail for $5.95 each plus tax, and lanyards for $4.95 plus tax. People can also order the ANF Trail Central Pin, the logo lanyard and a print copy of the pocket map for $10.90 plus tax and shipping. Reptiles and amphibians may have special needs to help regulate temperature. Gravel, stones and rocks may be used. Always consult with a veterinarian or a pet supply expert regarding the correct

help with purchasing medical equipment for their ambulances. EMSOF is currently funded by a $10 fee on moving violations and a $25 fee for driving under the influence incidents. Causer’s bill would increase those fees to $20 and $50, respectively. It would be the first increase in the fees in more than three decades. To further address training and staffing challenges faced by rural ambulance companies, the committee also approved House Bill 1869, which Causer cosponsored, that would allow the Department of Health to grant waivers to staffing requirements on a Basic Life Support (BLS) service ambulance in sixththrough eighth-class counties. Current law requires that a BLS ambulance be staffed at a minimum with at least one individual who is certified as an emergency medical responder (EMR) or higher and one who is licensed as an emergency medical technician (EMT). “In some instances, it is extremely difficult for a rural ambulance company to maintain that level of staffing around the clock,” Causer said. “These waivers could mean the difference between an ambulance getting out the door to help someone in need or being forced to stay in the station because they don’t meet the staffing requirement. These measures aim to address recommendations offered by the Senate Resolution 6 Commission, which was charged with identifying strategies
to restore the health of the state’s fire and EMS services. Other bills addressing recommendations in the report were also approved Tuesday. They include: ·House Bill 432, which would amend the Workers’ Compensation Act by making posttraumatic stress injury compensable under the act. · House Bill 1448, which would add a ballot referendum to expand the Volunteer Loan Assistance Program (VLAP) to include paid (career) fire departments. · House Bill 1459, which would create a mental wellness and stress management program for first responders, including 911 dispatchers and coroners. ·House Bill 1816, which would increase the maximum loan amounts under VLAP by 10% and require an annual adjustment to the loan limits based on inflation. · House Bill 1834, which would reauthorize the Fire and EMS Grant Program. ·House Bill 1839, which would authorize counties to offer a property tax credit for volunteer first responders. Causer has been a leader in supporting the state’s emergency services. Last summer, he led successful efforts to provide a long-overdue increase in Medicaid reimbursement for ambulance services and was also a vocal advocate for a new law that requires insurance companies to reimburse for treatment provided, even when no transport takes place.

Fire safety protocol gives people the ability to get out of a building promptly and safely in the event of a fire. Fires are unpredictable and can cause devastating loss of life and property. How puzzles may benefit brain health
Many people enjoy the challenges posed by puzzles such as crosswords, word finds and Sudoku, among others. Some even wonder if puzzles are more than simple fun and something that can actually benefit the brain. The idea that there’s a correlation between exercising the brain through puzzles and improving its function, much in the way that lifting weights can strengthen the muscles of the body, seems reasonable. Studies are ongoing, and the reviews are mixed. A 1999 study examining crosswords that was published in the Journal
of Experimental Psychology found no evidence to suggest crossword puzzles reduced age-related declines in cognition. However, research published a year later in Psychology of Aging suggested that crosswords, when done by older subjects, seemed to partially attenuate the negative effects of age on memory and perceptual speed tasks. Data published in USA Today indicates that solving puzzles may help reinforce existing connections between brain cells and the generation of new relationships. This may improve mental speed and thought processes.
Doing jigsaw puzzles could help with short-term memory, namely remembering shapes and colors, and visualizing the larger, finished picture. Researcher Keith Wesnes, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at the University of Exeter in England,
studied the impact of crosswords on attention, reasoning, and memory. Wesnes found a direct relationship between solving puzzles and the accuracy of varying ranges of functions, including reasoning, attention and memory recall. Puzzles can keep

vegans alike. Chickpea Salad Makes 4 servings 1 can (15 ounces) chickpeas, rinsed and drained 1 stalk celery, chopped 1 dill pickle, chopped (about 1⁄2 cup) 1⁄4 cup finely chopped red or yellow onion 1⁄3 cup vegan mayonnaise 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1⁄4 teaspoon salt
Place chickpeas in a medium bowl. Coarsely mash with a potato masher, leaving some beans whole. Add celery, pickle and onion; stir to mix. Add mayonnaise and lemon juice; mix well. Taste and add 1⁄4 teaspoon salt or more, if desired. Sprinkle with pepper, if desired; mix well. Serve on bread with lettuce and tomato, if desired.

State Police: 14-yearold Allegany County girl missing

New York State Police in Allegany County have been attempting to locate a missing 14-year-old girl from Genesee since last week. As of this printing, Molton R. Lapp was last seen Sept. 23 at her residence, according to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in the Amity Barracks. State police report Molton left a note stating that she was leaving the area with an unknown individual and was traveling to an unknown destination. Molton, investigators said, was believed to be outside New York and possibly in Pennsylvania. She was last seen wearing a white shirt with black sleeves and black collar. Authorities ask anyone who may have seen or made contact with Molton since Monday to call (585) 344-6200.

In addition, the survey found that 57 percent
of consumers won’t use a business that has a star rating of fewer than four stars. The BrightLocal survey underscores the effort small business owners must put into managing their companies’ online reputations. Whether business owners feel their online reputations are warranted or not, ignoring them can greatly affect their bottom lines. Many customers are happy to update their reviews if issues were promptly and successfully addressed. Online reputation management is important for today’s business owners. ROME, Italy---Jo Ann Chismire Zautzik, 72, of Rome, Italy, formerly of Coudersport, Pa. and Port Allegany, Pa., passed away on Friday, September 13, 2019, in Capena, Italy, after a long illness. Born on January 9, 1947 in Coudersport, she was a daughter of Carl Clifford and Lillie Pearl Sparks Chismire. On June 6, 1979 in Rome, she married Emerico A. Zautzik, who survives. On
December 1, 1985, her son Giuliano Zautzik, was born. Mashed potatoes are the perfect side dish, capable of being paired with meats, poultry and fish. Few meals wouldn’t benefit from the addition of creamy mashed potatoes. Some food historians say that the original recipe for mashed potatoes originated in 1771, when a Frenchman named Antoine Parmentier hosted a competition on ways to prepare potatoes. Others say that mashed potatoes surely were born in Great Britain in the 1600s, as potatoes were a staple of the English diet at that time. Regardless of the origin of mashed potatoes, a solid understanding of how to perfect this beloved side dish is a great way to impress family members and guests. This recipe for “Easiest, Creamiest Mashed Potatoes” from “Simple Soirées: Seasonal Menus for Sensational Dinner Parties” (Stewart, Tabori & Chang) by Peggy Knickerbocker is one every mashed potato lover will fall in love with. Easiest, Creamiest Mashed Potatoes
Serves 6 6 medium-sized russet potatoes, peeled and quartered 3 to 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 cup whole milk or cream (or half-and-half) Salt and freshly ground white pepper Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with salted cold water. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-high, and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork. Drain.
Meanwhile in a small pot, warm the butter and milk over medium-low heat. Place the potatoes in a large bowl and mash them with a potato masher, adding a little of the warm milk-and-butter mixture as you go. Continue to mash until the lumps are gone. Add just enough of the milk mixture to get a creamy consistency. Then whip the potatoes with a fork and season with salt and pepper to taste. You can make the potatoes a little ahead of time and keep them warm in a low oven, well covered, until ready to serve.

PORT ALLEGANY- Gene A. Johnson, 61, formerly of Port Allegany, passed away Sunday (Sept. 22, 2019) in UPMC Hamot, Erie, PA. Born May 26. 1958, in Port Allegany, he was a son of John C. “Jack” and Deanna D. Barber Johnson. Gene was a lifetime resident of the area and a graduate of Port Allegany High School, class of 1976. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 460, Port Allegany, and Sons of the American Legion, Port Allegany. Surviving in addition to his mother, Deanna Miller of Duke Center, are two sisters, Brenda L. (Douglas) Glenn and Wendy A. (Jeffrey) Tripp both of Eldred; four nephews and three nieces. Friends will be received from 11a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday (Sept, 25, 2019) in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, where a funeral service will be held at 1
