Preparations for 32nd Allegany County Artisans Tour underway

By CINDY WAGNER WELLSVILLE — Allegany County artisans have been busy preparing for the 32nd annual Allegany County Artisans Tour, and with 32 artisans across the county, it’s not to be missed.

On Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19-20, artisans will have the opportunity to show their work, and the general public to be introduced to a myriad of different artisans working in a variety of mediums.

This year, 32 artisans in 26 locations across Allegany County will offer refreshments and free raffles for art work.

Most studios will display works including, but not be limited to, clay; wood; metal; fiber; jewelry; paint; glass; and paper.

The talented artisans that have participated in the event include everyone from artists that are self-taught and who have won national and international acclaim to those who are masters of their creative genre.

Several artisans will preview their wares in select studios on Friday, Oct. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m.

One of those preview artisans will be Sherry Herdman of Angelica, owner of 3 Dog Quilts.

Herdman first participated in the tour in 2018 and has been quilting for 19 years.

“It really went well,” said Herdman. “I had just a wonderful time.”

her material costs as she makes no profit on any of her wares. Good quality cotton sells for $11.75 per yard, she explained, a king-size quilt can cost between $400 and $500 just in material.

She’ll also have potholders and the opportunity for patrons to support girl’s empowerment as well.

“I make the potholders as a de-stresser,” Herdman said. “I sell them at $4 a piece and

generational poverty.”

Like last year, Herdman will offer a 50 cent coupon off a beverage at the Angelica Sweet Shop at 44 Main St. and she is currently exhibiting at the Steuben Trust bank in Hornell.

WELLSVILLE — One may ask, What is so special about a bunch of bricks? If you go to the Fassett GreenSpace on Main Street, you’ll find the answer.

Earlier this year, Art for Rural America was awarded $32,725 for the procurement and installation of over 14,000 permeable brick pavers.

This will transform the multifaceted community garden and sculpture park into an Americans With Disabilitiescompliant, accessible outdoor place for all residents.

“These funds are being used to make walking easier for all and to make it possible for those with wheelchairs, strollers and scooters to be in the garden,” said Cassandra Bull, president of the GreenSpace board.

Funding through the grant also allowed the construction of an infor-

mational kiosk which now houses a community-made mosaic sign.

The Fassett GreenSpace will showcase permeable brick pavers made by Whitacre Greer in Ohio. These are the same pavers that were installed in Alfred State College’s Wellsville Campus at the Zero Energy Demonstration home. The pavers are an especially interesting design, as they create a passive water filtration system in which natural microbes form within the gravel and clean the water as it flows through.

Greg Carlin, a Wellsville resident and mason with 30 years of experience, was contracted to start installing the pavers in late September. This project is on track to be complete by the end of November.

After many attempts

to fund this phase of the Fassett GreenSpace project, The Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation Legacy Funds, through the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo, saw promise in the project. Art for Rural America was previously awarded $21,000 by the Wilson Foundation in partnership with KaBOOM! in its Play Everywhere Challenge in 2018 to procure an ensemble of six outdoor sculptural instruments.

The Legacy Funds fall under four categories: caregivers, community assets, youth sports and design and access. Design and access grants were created to “increase the health and quality of life of WNY residents of all ages by enhancing outdoor activities within the region,” according to the Community Foundation’s website.

These funds are distributed in the eight

counties of Western New York as well as parts of southeast Michigan, regions near to the heart of the late Wilson, founding owner of the Buffalo Bills.

Fire safety protocol gives people the ability to get out of a building promptly and safely in the event of a fire.

Fires are unpredictable and can cause devastating loss of life and property.

The U.S. Fire Administration states that, in 2017, there were 1,319,500 reported fires that resulted in 3,400 deaths and 14,670 injuries in the United States.

Travelers Insurance company advises people to develop a comprehensive fire safety plan, which can help save lives when used in concert with functioning smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Special youth, regular pheasant hunting coming up in October A special youth-only pheasant hunting weekend in Western New York is set for Oct. 12-13.

The hunt occurs one week prior to the regular pheasant hunting season and provides junior hunters (ages 12 to 15) with the opportunity to hunt pheasants with a licensed adult companion.

Regular pheasant season in Western New York opens Oct. 19.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation will release approximately 4,700 adult ring-necked Pheasants on Region 9 lands open to public hunting for this fall’s pheasant hunting season.

“DEC is pleased to provide enhanced pheasant hunting opportunities in Western New York through our cooperative pheasant raising programs,” said Region 9 Director Abby Snyder.

“We would especially like to thank the Erie and Allegany County Sheriff’s Departments for providing pheasants to be stocked at Zoar Valley Multiple Use Area and Hanging Bog Wildlife Management Area through their Pheasant Rearing Programs.”

The Day-old Pheasant Chick Program provides additional pheasant hunting opportunities through a partnership between DEC and sportsmen and women, 4H Youth, and landowners interested in rearing and releasing pheasants. Birds from

this program are released before the season opens and dispersed widely, presenting a greater challenge for experienced hunters.

Hunters are reminded to ask permission from private landowners before hunting on their lands. Many of these release sites are available for hunting thanks to the cooperation of private landowners. Good landowner/hunter relations are critical to ensure these areas remain open to hunting in future years.

A special permit is required for hunting small game during the opening day of pheasant season on Zoar Valley Multiple Use Area in the town of Collins (Erie County), and Harwood Lake Multiple Use Area in the town of Farmersville (Cattaraugus County). Hunters interested in entering the DEC permit lottery for these Multiple Use Areas should mail one standard size post card to: NYSDEC, Bureau of Wildlife, 270 Michigan Ave., Buffalo, N.Y., 14203 Post cards must include the hunter’s name, address, telephone number, 2019-20 license back tag number, preferred time of hunt (sunrise to noon or 1 pm to sunset), and the management area desired in order of preference. All entries must be received by Sept 27. There is no fee for the permit, and hunters awarded permits will be able to name one additional hunter on their

permit at the Administration Building near Red House Lake before hunting in the park. No small game hunting is allowed in Allegany State Park during the regular big game season that runs from Nov. 16 until Dec. 8.

Cuba Library Receives Children’s New Fund to Support Book Donation from Whitesville Cemetery Pilcrow Foundation

A beautiful setting that serves as the resting place for its community’s founders and generations of beloved citizens, and a spot where many local residents take a peaceful walk, the Whitesville Cemetery faces the challenges common to many rural cemeteries – fewer burials, expansive grounds, and keeping up with costs for regular maintenance and upkeep.

Working with the Allegany County Area Foundation (ACAF), Whitesville native Elton Harris has established a fund that will provide annual assistance to the Cemetery – to supplement the Cemetery Association’s own resources. The Lester and Dorotha Harris Fund for the Whitesville Rural Cemetery honors Mr. Harris’ parents while helping to keep the cemetery a beautiful, well-kept place for

remembrance and for Whitesville citizens to walk.

Lester and Dorotha Harris were wellknown in the community through their maple syrup production and involvement in numerous civic organizations, including the Grange, 4-H, and the historical society.

The first distribution to the Cemetery Association will be made in summer 2021.

Interested persons may contribute to this fund through the Foundation.

This summer, the Cuba Circulating Library received the Children’s Book Project grant award from the Pilcrow Foundation.

The library received 71 books from the Pilcrow Foundation—an organization dedicated to providing new, quality, hardcover children’s books to rural public libraries. In addition, the library received 23 math and science books as a generous donation from Mr. Hal Berenson and Mrs. Laura Ackerman of Colorado. The purchases of these books—worth over $1200—was made possible by a $400 matching grant provided by the Friends of the Cuba Library, Inc. Tina Dalton, Library Director at the Cuba Library, says, “We focused on selecting awardwinning books featuring diverse characters. All children deserve to see themselves in books, to

relate to the characters on the page, so we are excited to add books that will allow them to know they are not alone. Books that feature diverse characters introduce new thoughts and ideas to children so they know there is much more to our beautiful world.” Dalton particularly wants to thank the Friends of the Cuba Library for their support of this project. “The Friends do a lot to support our efforts here at the library—book sales, bake sales, dinners, and volunteering—We are very thankful for their work on behalf of the Cuba community.”

“If the artist is able, they’re more than willing to demonstrate,” said Curran. “There’s a chance that some of the studios will be demonstrating their craft.”

Shopping is not only on about as local level as you can get, but tourgoers can “talk with the artisans and shop in their homes and studios

amid their private inspirations,” as the artisan’s website points out.

This year the Allegany Artisans are developing a scholarship fund that was gifted them by the family of Jaunita Barrone-Detrich. Donations to the fund, which will provide an annual scholarship to an Allegany County art student, are greatly appreciated.

The new internal structure will allow the sculptures to be firmly mounted to prevent another windstorm disaster. The project was completed with the horseheads ready to be mounted on the customer’s barn.

The horseheads were damaged in a windstorm when they got loose from the barn they were attached to and cartwheeled down the owner’s driveway. One ear was hanging by a thread and there were tears in the body as well as many holes.

Believed to be trade signs from the 1800s, the sculptures are delicate because they were made out of many pieces of thin metal soldered together. They are “of the type used outside French restaurants and butcher shops that sold horse meat for human consumption,” said Banker.

“A sample of the material was analyzed and is believed to be ‘white metal’. It is mostly zinc with some lead and cadmium and a similar one was featured in the popular TV program “Storage Wars.” The sculpture is very detailed from the

Allegany County DoH offers flu shots only at Belmont clinic site

BELMONT — Pharmacies and health care providers throughout Allegany County have been offering vaccinations for several years, including the flu shot.

The Allegany County Department of Health encourages residents to visit their local pharmacy or health care provider for their flu shot this season. The Allegany County Department of Health will offer flu shot clinics only at the County Office building clinic on the ground floor of the county office building.

Those seeking a flu shot are reminded of the following: •Please wear short sleeves.

•Please bring insur-

ance cards with you. It is the responsibility of the insured to make sure the Allegany County Department of Health is within the insurance’s network and will cover the cost of the vaccine and administration fee.

•If insurance is not accepted, payment for the vaccine and administration fee will be billed to the patient.

•If you are paying cash, the high dose flu for ages 65 and over is $82; regular flu is $48; and pediatric flu for ages 6 months to 36 months is $50.

•Vaccines are not free and clinics are planned for September and October, with dates dependent on the availability of flu vaccine.

The County Office building clinic will be open: •For adults only on Sept. 27 and Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Adults 18-years-old and over. Walk-in flu clinics for adults age 18 and older. No appointment necessary.

Civil War Weekend included mock battles, living history in Angelica

By BRIAN McCLELLAN ANGELICA — Visitors to Angelica this past weekend afternoon were greeted with the spectacle of booming artillery, musket fire and clouds of black powder smoke as dozens of Civil War reenactors clashed in a mock battle that ranged up and down Main Street and around Park Circle.

The battle was just one part of Angelica’s 16th annual Civil War Weekend, an event hosted by The Allegheny Highlands Council Boy Scouts of America and the 136th New York Volunteer Infantry, “The Ironclads.”

The activities kicked off Friday, when eighth-graders from all over Allegany County participated in education stations held by the reenactors.

Originating as a Boy Scout camporee, there was a large scout presence in the town as hundreds of Boy Scouts set up camp in the Allegany County Fairgrounds for the weekend, attending education stations and even participating in a large mock battle of their own with the assistance of reenactors acting as officers.

As of this printing, Molton R. Lapp was last seen Sept. 23 at her residence, according to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in the Amity Barracks. State police report Molton left a note stating that she was leaving the area with an unknown individual and was traveling to an unknown destination.

Molton, investigators said, was believed to be outside New York and possibly in Pennsylvania.

She was last seen wearing a white shirt with black sleeves and black collar.

ABET reaccredits 10 Alfred State programs ALFRED, NY, September 2019 – Reaffirming that Alfred State is committed to providing a highquality technical education, the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET) has reaccredited 10 of the college’s technologyrelated majors.

Programs that were recently reaccredited include: computer engineering technology (AAS and BS), electrical engineering technology (AAS and BS), mechanical engineering technology (AAS and BS), surveying engineering technology (AAS), surveying and geomatics engineering technology (BS), construction engineering technology (AAS), and construction management (BS).

Dr. John Williams, dean of the School of Architecture, Management and Engineering Technology at Alfred State, said, “Having the majority of our technology programs recognized by ABET highlights the strength of our faculty and programs and the great experience provided to our students.”

Dr. Matthew Lawrence, chair of the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technology Department, said, his department is pleased that all six of its engineering technology programs have been fully accredited by ABET through 2024.

Driftwood returns to the Wellsville Creative Arts Center WELLSVILLE — Driftwood will be performing on Friday, Oct. 11, at the Wellsville Creative Arts Center starting at 8 p.m.

Anyone familiar with the Americana music scene knows this upstate New York-based band has cut their teeth on a killer live show. With a never-ending tour schedule and a steady buzz, they have built a very solid underground fan base. "The game has

been live shows and nose to the ground since the beginning," says guitarist/songwriter Dan Forsyth.

In addition to a devout following and a sizable discography, the band's hard work has also been a huge part of the inspiration for their music.

Their first album with a major producer, 'Tree of Shade' is a testament to the essence of a song.

Working alongside Simone Felice, the band found themselves stripping things back way more than they normally would. "Simone was all about finding the essence of the song and

doing our best to bring it out without distorting it or taking the arrangement too far."

With the addition of drummer Will Sigel in April 2018, Driftwood feels like a new band.

"Will has elevated our sound without changing the intimate dynamic that is Driftwood," observes bassist Joey Arcuri. With this added momentum and a new album, a nationwide tour is set in support of 'Tree of Shade.'

Cardiac rehab program at Jones Memorial recertified

WELLSVILLE — The Cardiac Rehab Program at Jones Memorial Hospital has been recertified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). This certification is recognition of Jones Memorial Hospital’s commitment to improving the quality of life of patients by enhancing standards of care.

Cardiac Rehab is designed to help people recover faster and return to full, productive lives after being hospitalized with a heart event.

Qualifying diagnoses or procedures include heart attack, balloon angioplasty, stent placement, bypass surgery, valve surgery, heart transplantation, and heart failure. The program includes exercise and education in group and individual settings. “The individual exercise programs are designed based on the patient’s physical capabilities and limitation,” explained Devin Matthews, Cardiac Rehab Lead at JMH. “The education classes include disease specific information as well as counseling on JUST nutrition, medications, CURVE exercise, emotional issues and stress manOF agement.”
