Black belt awarded at The Karate Connection In Fond Rememberance of Milton L. “Les” Rogers, Jr.
Photo Submitted Milton L. “Les” Rogers, Jr. 61, of Sheridan, N.Y., died unexpectedly on Friday Sept. 18, 2020, at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk, N.Y. Les was born June 4,1959, in Buffalo, N.Y., the son of the late Milton Rogers Sr. and Marlene (Hawks) Rogers. Surviving are his mother, Marlene Rogers of Silver Creek, N.Y.; two sons: Matthew and Steven Rogers, both of Olean, N.Y.; a brother, John (Tina) Rogers of Holiday, Fla.; and sister, Elizabeth (Mike) Bayba of Silver Creek. Les was a graduate of Iroquois Central High School, class of 1977 in Elma, N.Y. He was employed by the Pennysaver in Fredonia, N.Y., where he worked in advertising and sales. One of Les’ favorite interests was camping and being outdoors. He loved and collected movies and was known for his great sense of humor.
He also had an affinity for anything to do with audio or visual media. A small private funeral service for family and close friends will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020, at the Christ Chapel Wesleyan Church, 64 Buffalo St., Silver Creek, at 11 a.m., with visiting pastor Vince Eisaman officiating. Memorial services will also be held the same day from 1-3 p.m. and from 4-6 p.m., that will be open to all who would like to come and pay their respects with the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel, 160 Central Ave. Silver Creek. To share a condolence or remembrance with Les’ family go to www. holeparkerfc.com. In lieu flowers the family requests that any donations please be made in Les’ name with the Silver Creek Fire Department.
Your laugh and wit will be missed by all. May God be with you and yours.
(FREDONIA, NY) – Lucas Young, age 18 of Forestville has been awarded his Black Belt (Shodan) from Norman Yonkers’ Karate Connection MMA in Fredonia. Lucas began his training at The Karate Connection when he was 8 years old. Lucas’ test included physical fitness, kata, self-defense, sparring, grappling, weapons, board breaking, Japanese language, & history. Many parts of his test were conducted outside to test angles, balance, reference
points and weather conditions. Lucas is now attending Alfred State University and will continue his training when he is home on breaks. The Karate Connection does not promise a promotion to any student in exchange for them attending classes for a certain length of time. Each student progresses at their own pace and promotes when they are ready as individuals. Given this way of promoting, each student must set their own goals and work hard
to achieve them; they are not simply awarded a belt for “time served.”Lucas is a fine example of what can be achieved through effort, desire and practice. We are proud of his accomplishments inside and outside of our school. For more information on the programs available at Norman Yonkers’ Karate Connection, you can call 679-7685 or go to their website at: www.karatecon. com.

Advertisements used to be played after the movie, hence the name “trailer.”
Companies use Elmer’s Glue as milk in cereal commercials, so that the cereal won’t look soggy, and so that they can strategically place the cereal in the bowl. It is commonplace for weight loss commercials to pay a fit person to gain weight for the “before” photo instead of showing someone who actually lost the weight. Ice cubes in beverage advertisements are typically made of acrylic so they won’t melt under hot photography lights or move around. Bubbles are made by adding detergent, and water is added so light will filter through better. Most watches displayed in advertisements are set to 10:10 because the hands of the watch frame the brand name and they make a smiling face. When photographing ice cream, mashed potatoes are used so the product doesnt melt under the hot lights.

Scary Good Take the fear out of trying unfamiliar produce
(Family Features) Introducing kids to unfamiliar flavors doesnít have to be a frightful experience. Getting creative and taking cues from some beloved characters may be all it takes for families to explore produce in a new way and discover how delicious, satisfying and enjoyable fresh fruits and vegetables can be. A passion for produce may begin with Americaís favorites, like bananas, apples, citrus, celery, carrots and broccoli, but thatís just the beginning. Whether it is their angry names and tough exteriors, or simply a fear of the unknown about taste and preparation, dozens more diverse and exotic fruits and vegetables like dragon fruit, horned melon and Brussels sprouts are often the sources of produce paranoia. An initiative from Dole, in collaboration with Disney and Pixarís Monsters, Inc., is helping to take the scare out of specialty fruits and vegetables and widen Americaís produce horizons. Thatís because, like a good book or the characters in a beloved film, you canít judge a fruit or vegetable by its appearance; natureís true beauty often lies within. The campaign offers
character-inspired recipes, serving suggestions, digital and social activations, family-friendly activities, fun trivia and influencer partnerships that celebrate the not-so-scary world of the planetís more unusual fresh bounty. One easy way to introduce new flavors is by trying a variation of a familiar fruit or veggie. For example, there are more than 500 edible banana varieties in the world. You might sample a red banana or a Manzano, or even an ice cream banana, with a taste resembling vanilla custard. These fun and kidfriendly Green Slime Nacho Cups feature plantains, for example, a member of the banana family with a different taste and texture than everyday yellow bananas ñ more firm and starchy like a potato. Increase your familyís produce intake even further with a Slippery Slimy Smoothie and Chicken Stuffed Roz Heads, which call for green grapes, celery, avocados, strawberries and blueberries. Find more recipes and other not-so-scary fun at dole.com/Disney, and follow #Dole and #DoleRecipes.

PEOPLE WHO HAVE WALKED ON THE MOON
There are 12 people who have walked on the moon — all are Americans and all are men. They are: Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin — who were the first two astronauts to leave their bootprints on the Moon. There were also Pete Conrad, Alan Bean, Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell, David Scott, James Irwin, John Young, Charles Duke, Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt. The first walk, by Armstrong and Aldrin, occurred in 1969. The last two, by Cernan and Schmitt, occurred in 1972. No person has been back for a visit since.
Chicken Stuffed Roz Heads Prep time: 15 minutes Servings: 3 1 cup cubed, cooked chicken breast 1/2 cup DOLEÆ Green Grapes, halved 1/4 cup chopped Dole Celery 1/3 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurt 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 1/2 Dole Avocados, halved, pitted and peeled 6 whole-wheat pretzel twists
18 whole-wheat pretzel sticks 1 Dole Strawberry, sliced 3 dried, sweetened blueberries In bowl, stir together chicken, grapes, celery, yogurt, salt and pepper. Scoop three equal portions onto serving plate. Shape each into oval. Top each with upside down avocado half. Decorate each avocado half to resemble Rozís face. Using sharp paring knife, trim each pretzel twist to create horn-rimmed glasses lens by cutting off double loop section of each pretzel twist and discarding or enjoying as snack, keeping single loop portion, which will become one lens. Two lenses are needed per Roz Head. Place two pretzel lenses on each avocado to form glasses. Add pretzel stick to each side of avocado to form arms of glasses. Push four pretzel sticks into top of each avocado to form hair. Add strawberry slice, trimmed to look like lips for her mouth, and place blueberry on lower left side of face to form mole.
Green Slime Nacho Cups Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Servings: 4 1 green starting to turn yellow DOLEÆ Plantain, peeled and thinly sliced on bias 1 1/2 teaspoons canola oil 1/4 teaspoon salt, divided 1 Dole Avocado, halved, pitted and peeled 1 tablespoon lime juice 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 cup thinly shredded Dole Purple Cabbage Preheat oven to 375 F. Toss plantain slices with canola oil and season with pinch of salt. On parchment paper-lined baking sheet, arrange slices in single layer with no overlapping. Bake 18-20 minutes, or until crispy and lightly golden. Cool completely and set aside. Using spoon, scoop flesh of avocado into small bowl and mash, reserving one half avocado shell. Stir mashed avocado with lime juice, garlic and remaining salt. Stir in slaw, reserving some for garnish. Scoop into reserved avocado shell and smooth top with back of spoon. Stick reserved cabbage shreds out of avocado mixture to look like hair. Serve slime nacho cups with plantain chips.

How to Bring More Space into Bathrooms (Family Features)– Today’s designers, architects and builders are creating modern bathrooms that are practical, luxurious, comfortable and accommodating. They know homeowners and homebuyers desire - even demand - these features regardless of the bathroom’s size or layout. Therein lies the challenge: How to create a feeling of spaciousness and openness without sacrificing valuable floor space, obstructing traffic flow or forfeiting storage space. Despite these impediments, building professionals can meet these bath-design challenges and even exceed them with an option like Johnson Pocket
Door Frame Kits. Pocket doors can be installed in virtually any room but are particularly well suited for use in bathrooms, where space is often at a premium. The typical hinged door requires up to 14 square feet of floor space to swing open. A pocket door, conversely, slides into the wall, leaving the space in front of and on either side of the doorway open and available. Pocket doors are commonly installed at the entrances to bathrooms and can also be used to conceal linen closets and washers and dryers when the bathroom serves double duty as a laundry room. There’s also a growing bathroom remodeling
trend of enclosing the toilet alcove to create a toilet “room” within the bathroom. However, space restrictions seldom allow for the installation of a swinging door, so remodelers often install pocket doors. Pocket door frames also allow for items to be mounted on the pocket wall. For instance, when used with Johnson’s 151558PL Pocket Wall Reinforcement Clip Set and 5/8-inch thick plywood, the 1500SC Pocket Door Frame with all-steel split studs can support wall-mounted fixtures such as towel bars, shelves, framed mirrors or artwork. The pocket door frame kit comes equipped with soft-close hardware that allows doors up to 200
