LEADING WNY PEER-CERTIFIED HEALTH ADVOCACY NETWORK REBRANDS The Former Housing Options Made Easy Evolves into Recovery Options Made Easy (BUFFALO, NY)— Housing Options Made Easy, Inc., was formed in 1990. Thirty years later, the not-for-profit, peer-certified organization specializing in mental health advocacy, substance use recovery, housing support, and peer-certified programs has rebranded as Recovery Options Made Easy. Founded as Housing Options Made Easy, the network began when a group of past and present mental health peers recognized the need for better and safer housing support for individuals discharged from hospitals with a mental health issue and/or substance use. By the time of the agency’s 10th anniversary in 2000, Housing Options had grown from 30 to 180 supported housing beds in Erie, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, and Allegany Counties, and their expansive growth was just beginning. With expanded services into Niagara, Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, and Wyoming Counties, as well as a growing team of peers and community partners, the
agency felt it was the right time to transition from its housing-based origins to a service array that better represents the peer experience and advocacy. The growth that spurred the rebrand to Recovery Options Made Easy—which includes a revolutionized color palette, icon, and primary logo— included 400 scattered-site apartments, multi-county Recovery Centers, Peer Bridgers, Respite Services and multi-county warmlines, text lines, and virtual call lines which handle over 14,000 calls per year. These Recovery Options programs and others save Medicaid and NYS over $35 million a year. Recovery Options is composed of 95% peers and has its main office in Gowanda, NY, with six satellite locations providing supportive services to over 8,000 individuals in 20 counties. Being a peer-certified organization means that the care received through the Recovery Options network stems from lived experiences, woven by empathy, understanding, and respect for an individual’s right to

choose. Personal experiences of peers have helped the organization expand its network and service offerings and inspire the creative brand evolution. For example, the new primary Recovery Options logo is a heart; a classic symbol of generosity, kindness, and care—all of which Recovery Options (also known by its new acronym ROME) embodies. The heart is composed of several patches representing the unique experiences of peers combining to provide a holistic approach to mental health and substance use advocacy. Finally, the logo is weaved together by the “Golden Thread,”—a commonly referred-to term in the behavioral health

CEO, Dr. Kirsten Vincent on the transition, “As we’ve grown and learned over the years, we’ve come to realize that our organization and those who work with us do far more than just advocating for safer housing— we are an all-encompassing recovery organization that transcends beyond a place to rest your head. With the help of our peer-driven, trauma-informed workforce, we’re able to offer peer support programs, respite, community advocacy and training, as well as the type of housing options we were founded on, all from a place of true lived expe-

Get growing this fall gardening season
(BPT) - The changing season offers a new opportunity to grow fallfriendly plants. Gardening is a great way to decorate your space with beautiful blooms, grow fresh vegetables that produce delicious cool season harvests, and is a safe, healthy activity to engage in while practicing social distancing and enjoying the outdoors. Whether you have a small patio, high-rise rooftop, quaint sunny corner of your yard or even a balcony, the experts at Ball Horticultural Company share their fall gardening insights for growing a successful and stunning garden this season. Prepare for planting If you have plants that have matured from the summer gardening season, it’s time to clean up to prepare for new growth. Remove surface plants and use a tiller or hand tools to remove root matter under the soil. Add compost or gardening soil to pots, window boxes and other garden spaces, so they are ready with rich nutrients to support fall plant growth. If you’ve grown hardy perennials, just a brief tidy-up is needed. Clip away any brown foliage or spent flowers and provide a light covering of mulch at the base of the plant to ready them for frosty temperatures. Embrace fall hues Rich reds, vivid oranges and happy yellows are traditional autumnal hues that add energy to your gardens as temperatures turn. A classic coneflower and pollinator favorite, like the Sombrero Echinacea from Darwin Perennials, will brighten your space even as temperatures fall. Available in a variety of colors, Sombrero Baja Burgundy and Fiesta Orange are ideal for
bringing vibrant fall color to sunny spaces and for attracting bees, songbirds and butterflies to your yard. Tip: Leave the older blooms of Echinacea on their stems to feed wildlife into the winter. Then cut them back after their feast to put new energy into the plant for spring. Flowers that thrive Another colorful and easy care option are Cool Wave Pansies, a fast-growing, long-lasting trailing pansy available in a variety of bold colors perfect for revamping your outdoor space for fall. A cool-season gardener’s dream, you can
feel confident that these blooms will thrive even as fall temperatures ebb and flow. Check out Cool Wave Raspberry Swirl with cheerful magenta and white petals and a delightful yellow center. Tip: Place your Cool Wave Pansies where you’ve also planted bulbs. Their hardiness will make them the first pansy to reappear next spring for two seasons of enjoyment. Enjoy homegrown vegetables In addition to adding style to your space with fall
Spirit Continued from page 2 Rebmann opening the Gowanda Radio Shack 18 years ago. To that, he had added four other stores in other locations in Western New York. During the period when the Hollywood Theater board was running the Hollywood Happening, Rebmann’s band performed free of charge in support of the fund-raising effort. It was also noted that Rebmann was active at Gowanda’s Saint Joseph’s Church including assisting with streaming the weekly masses. Rebmann thanked his parents for giving him faith and a strong work ethic. He thanked his wife, Deb, for her encouragement, love and support. He thanked all of those who support local businesses in Gowanda. And he thanked God, who makes all things possible adding “may God bless you and may God bless Gowanda.” Gowanda Mayor David Smith next introduced Bill Cain, the community service award winner. Smith noted that he was active with the Gowanda Legion Post, active with the St. Vincent DePaul Society and a substitute teacher. Smith additionally noted that both he Cain had started at the high school together in 2003. Much of Cain’s acceptance speech took the form of a family and community history, about growing up on a dairy farm in Zoar and of a father who drove a school bus. After college, he spent some time in the army and in various administrative jobs
before becoming a substitute teacher after retiring. Cain said that teaching “kept him young”. Next, Evon Lloyd, pastor at the First Presbyterian Church, introduced Special Recognition Award winner Ken Hawkins. Lloyd noted that Ken had been the first person to greet her when she first came to the church as a new pastor saying that he was all about hospitality. She went on to say he was “always about service in some form.” Lloyd said that “if Gowanda is ‘the beautiful valley between the hills,’ then Ken is the jewel in the valley”. In a return to very short acceptance speeches, Hawkins simply said that he wanted to say “thank you to all”. Finally, Barbara Dempsey introduced the Excellence in Youth Award, which went to Tatum Stitzel. Dempsey noted that her first advice on pubic speaking had come from a Stitzel. Police Chief Stitzel had once told her “you don’t have to talk as long as your predecessor.” She then described Tatum, a 2020 GCS graduate and as someone for whom family always came first. She also said that Tatum was someone “always knows what she wants to do” and “always stays focused”. As she concluded the introduction, Dempsey noted that Stitzel was starting at St. Bonaventure this Fall and that she was someone who would do very well there. Following that, the speeches wrapped up with Stitzel simply thanking Dempsey for the comments and thanking her family for all their support.
