SS Edmund Fitzgerald was an American Great Lakes freighter that sank in FLORIDA a Lake Superior storm on November 10, 1975, with the loss of the entire crew of 29. When launched on June 7, 1958, she was the largest ship on North America's Great Lakes, and she remains the largest to have sunk there.

For 17 years Fitzgerald carried taconite iron ore from mines near Duluth, Minnesota, to iron works in Detroit, Toledo, and other Great Lakes ports. As a "workhorse," she set seasonal haul records six times, often breaking her own previous record.

Carrying a full cargo of ore pellets with Captain Ernest M. McSorley in command, she embarked on her ill-fated voyage from Superior, Wisconsin, near Duluth, on the afternoon of November 9, 1975. En route to a steel mill near Detroit, Fitzgerald joined a second freighter, SS Arthur M. Anderson. By the next day, the two ships were caught in a severe storm on Lake Superior, with near hurricane-force winds and waves up to 35 feet high. Shortly after 7:10 p.m., Fitzgerald suddenly sank in Canadian (Ontario) waters 530 feet deep, about 17 miles from Whitefish Bay near the twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario—a distance Fitzgerald could have covered in just over an hour at her top speed. Although Fitzgerald had reported being in difficulty earlier, no distress signals were sent before she sank; Captain McSorley's last message to Anderson said, "We are holding our own." Her crew of 29 perished, and no bodies were recovered.

Ease Into Education (Family Features)– If there’s one constant this year, it’s change. With another school year comes even more change, but you can help your family make a smooth transition with some planning and preparation.

Allow time for adjustments. After months of later bedtimes and laid-back schedules, kids and parents alike need a little time to adjust to a new mindset. Start gradually dialing back bedtime and scheduling time for educational activities and lunchtime a few weeks before school begins. Two additional cases of COVID-19 in Cattaraugus County Cattaraugus County Health Department was notified of two additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 residents within Cattaraugus County.

The department’s active positive COVID-19 caseload is now twenty eight as there are one-hundred and sixty three residents who have recovered from COVID-19.

The one hundred and ninety fourth confirmed case is a male resident who is residing in the southeast quadrant of the county, and who denies any significant travel history or being in direct contact with a positive COVID-19 person. He reports being asymptomatic (no fever, no cough, no body aches, etc.) and was tested for COVID-19 on September 2nd as part of a screening process. His test results on September 6th indicated that he was positive for the virus.

The one hundred and ninety fifth confirmed case is a female resident who resides in the southeast quadrant of the county, who denies any significant travel history. She is a healthcare worker who reports being in direct contact with a positive COVID-19 person and shortly thereafter, develop congestion and running nose. She was tested for

COVID-19 on September 4th and her test results on September 7th indicated that she was positive for the virus.

The department has begun a thorough contact tracing investigation for those individuals that they have been in contact with and the places that they have visited.

We would like to reiterate that if any resident experience fever, cough, shortness of breath or whole body aches they should contact their health care provider (avoid going directly to an

Urgent Care facility, or the Emergency Room before calling).

In addition, wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This is especially important after using the bathroom, coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.

If soap and water is not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains a minimum of 60% alcohol.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, especially with unwashed hands.

Disinfect commonly touched surfaces with a cleaner that is approved by the EPA against COVID-19.

How to manage low bandwidth during remote learning sessions

In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, many schools hastily transitioned from traditional in-person learning to remote learning. This transition posed new and unique challenges to educators as well as students and their parents.

One of the biggest challenges posed by remote learning was keeping students connected to their teachers and their classmates, not all of whom had readily available access to devices that could facilitate such connections. In recognition of that challenge, school systems worked to procure devices for students only to be confronted by another challenge: low bandwidth. According to Microsoft, bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over an internet connection per second. Low bandwidth can compromise students’ ability to stay connected to their virtual classrooms. In an effort to help students overcome that

challenge, Microsoft offers the following tips on how educators, students and parents can manage low bandwidth during remote learning sessions.

• Reduce reliance on video during class sessions.

Turning video cameras off during live class sessions can help to overcome the challenges posed by low bandwidth, as live video is a key contributor to excessive use of bandwidth. If video must be used, encourage students to turn off their cameras when they are not speaking.

• Use pre-recorded content. Pre-recording content enables students to stream video over the internet, saving those with low bandwidth the hassle of downloading large video files to their computers. Microsoft recommends educators who pre-record content for their students to stream to instruct those students to use class time to complete assignments. Educators can

make themselves available via chat to answer questions students may have about their assignments.

• Avoid video-based assignments. It can be difficult for students with low bandwidth to send very large files, such as videos. Educators can help students avoid that issue by not requiring them to submit videos as part of their assignments.

• Encourage students to sync files to their devices.

Each device is different and each manufacturer has its own instructions on how to sync files to devices. But Microsoft notes that syncing files to a device allows students to read them offline, which is ideal for students with limited internet connectivity.

Low bandwidth poses a challenge for remote learners. Thankfully, there are ways to overcome low bandwidth so students can keep learning.

ple can honor 9-11 victims and their families.

• Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations.

• Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m.

• Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11.

• Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

• If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff

from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost.

• Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001.

• Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs.

• Attend a special service commemorating 9-11 at houses of worship.

• Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home.

A Message From Seneca Nation President Armstrong, Sr.

I, am coming close to completing my second term as Seneca Nation President and it is very important to me to extend a thank you to everyone in the region for working together through-

out the Covid-19 pandemic.

We are all concerned about the same things – issues related to the safety of our families and the changes we experience on a daily basis from local reopening’s to

changes in the number of cases. But as it has been said before, “We are all in this together”.

As a Seneca Nation Government, my Office, Nation Treasurer Matt Pagels, Nation Clerk Bethany Johnson (deputy clerk Marta Kettle), Nation Tribal Council and staffs have worked many hours along with Departments to address this crisis and meet the challenges.

We are happy to share with the region that by prac-

ticing safety guidelines, we have been able to reopen our Seneca Class II and Class III Gaming facilities that have a positive impact for the economy. Please refer to our gaming websites for information on the guidelines.

Many patrons have returned to enjoy gaming, dining and staying at our hotels.

In order to provide stability and continuity in the progress we have made and continue to work on, I have announced my candidacy for the Office of Seneca Nation Treasurer. I firmly believe that we as a Nation need to keep up the momentum in facing challenges, making progress on economic recovery, protecting our Gaming facilities and
