‘Celebrating the Seasons’ at Rushford Labor Day

By Bob Clark RUSHFORD — The 111th annual Rushford Labor Day is set to kick off for three days of celebrations on Saturday.

“Celebrating The Seasons” is the 2019 theme for the Rushford Labor Day Parade, which will begin at the former Rushford school at 10:30 a.m.

Monday. Themes have been a common theme at the parade going back generations, with floats awarded prizes based on their theme decorations. The festival got its start in 1908, and for many years has been organized by the nonprofit Rushford Labor Day Corp.

Also a longtime tradition, two fireworks displays will be offered -- one at 10 p.m. Saturday and the second at 9 p.m. Monday.

Other popular attractions are also returning. The always-popular Rushford Fire Department Demolition Derby is set for Saturday. The

annual craft and vendor show will run all three days. The Rushford Central School Alumni Banquet will be at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Genesee Valley Antique Tractor Club Antique Tractor Pulls will be held Sunday morning, and the horse pulls will be held Monday. The annual car show and volleyball tournament will be held at 1 p.m. Monday.

The live music this year also includes many long-time favorites.

The Rushford Concert Band, Diggin Roots Band and Nip & Tuck will perform Saturday; the Panloco Steel Drum Band will perform Sunday; and the Burkharts, the concert band and Zoar will perform on Labor Day. A newer addition is the Rushford ROCKS! Rock hunt, which will be held at noon on Sunday. Prizes will be hidden under special rocks, and rocks are the finder's to keep or to rehide to keep the fun going. Anyone wanting to donate painted rocks may drop them

The Wellsville YMCA has announced an array of new and returning programs starting in September.

“We’re very excited to increase the number of programs and services we offer at the YMCA,” shared Curtis Pierce, Associate Executive Director, Wellsville YMCA. “Y Family Time is about giving families as a unit, and as individuals, the opportunities to deepen relationships, develop new skills and interests, improve their health and well-being, and connect to the community.”

The Y will offer several new programs tailored to area youth and families. Some programs are exclusive to YMCA members with preferred pricing while others are available to nonmembers at a public program rate.

For preschool kids the YMCA offers Kinder Club, a drop-off program for youngsters ages 3-5, features arts, crafts, and gym games.

The YMCA has also brought back its popular 60-minute Sports Bugs program which assists preschoolers in developing body awareness skills by learning gross motor skills.

Children in grades K-3 will have the opportunity to attend “Super Saturday” activities offered weekly from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

Supervised activities will vary each week, and a monthly activity calendar will be available at the YMCA.

A brand new offering for area youth in grades 7-12 is “Community Changemakers” which brings young people together offering them an opportunity to make in impact in our own community while finding their voices and activating their beliefs as they work to solve local issues. The club will meet every Wednesday evening at 7 p.m., and it is free for all participants.

YMCA membership is not required for youth wishing to join this club.

“Family Friday Nights” will make their debut on September 6. Every Friday night the YMCA will offer members the opportunity to play games, watch movies and interact with other families while spending time with their own family.

An activity calendar will be available at the YMCA at the beginning of September.

The YMCA’s popular “Parents’ Time Out” events have evolved into weekly programming. YMCA members with family memberships will have the opportunity to drop-off their children from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for just $5 per child allowing parents and guardians a chance to shop or catch up on chores.

New York state acts to prevent chronic wasting disease in deer

ALBANY (TNS) — Have you ever filled your bird feeder only to have the food devoured by hungry deer? Under new proposed regulations, that could prompt a written warning from Department of Environmental Conservation officers and if you do it again, you could get a ticket.

That’s not to say that bird feeders are being banned or even that they are bad. But the proposed change is one of many measures the state is taking to protect against chronic wasting disease (CWD) that is decimating deer populations in some states, but not yet in New York.

The new regulations are mostly aimed at hunters rather than bird-feeding homeowners. And they aim to prevent people from bringing in whole

deer, elk or moose carcasses from out of state for fear that they could be CWD carriers.

“CWD poses a real and substantial threat to deer, elk, and moose populations across North America, and we take that risk seriously in New York,” state Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos said in releasing the new proposed rules.

The rules are also being proposed by the state Department of Agriculture and Markets.

CWD is a fatal nervoussystem disease that affects deer, elk and moose. It is believed to be caused by mis-folded proteins called prions.

The prions attack their victims’ brains causing lesions and holes, and the animals stop eating, causing an emaciated

appearance. It has no cure and can be spread among the hoofed mammals in the cervidae, or deer, family by contact with a victim’s bodily fluid or ingestion of contaminated food or water.

Notably, the prions can survive for years in soil and animals can become carriers before they have symptoms.

“It’s really a unique infectious agent,” said Krysten Schuler, a wildlife disease ecologist at Cornell University’s veterinary school.

She added that New York has so far avoided outbreaks in its deer population ever since several animals with the disease were found back in 2005.

That led to a ban on importing deer from out of state for deer farms. But as the illness is cropping

up in other states such as Wisconsin and Colorado, and in Canada, wildlife and agriculture experts are once again on the alert.

“We really don’t want to get it again,” said Schuler, who explained that “more states keep getting added to the list,” with Pennsylvania and Quebec being the most recent hot spots.

Hopefully, the new proposed regulations are coming in time.

They were originally proposed by DEC and Ag and Market in 2018 but weren’t finalized until the summer, said Dave Colavito, a member and former board member of Back Country Hunters and Anglers, which promotes hunting and fishing.

“Deer obviously don’t recognize state borders,” Colavito said.

Other future regulations may include banning urine-based deer scents, since the prions can be carried in urine and feces.

For non-hunters, the most obvious impacts may be on bird feeders where people will be discouraged from using them if deer congregate around them and if there is concern about a CWD outbreak.

“If you are putting seed in your bird feeder and if you are in a particular area where deer are coming to your bird

feeder for a particular purpose and if an ECO (environmental conservation officer) comes to your location they could cause you to stop,” Colavito said.

CWD is double threat not only because there is no cure, but there are no ways to test a live animal in the field, other than to observe its behavior. And the CWD prions can withstand high temperatures as well as cleaning agents like bleach, said Colavito. “They are highly resistant,” he said.

Why Labor Day is worth celebrating

Labor Day weekend is much -anticipated. Many people look forward to Labor Day weekend because it offers one last extended break to enjoy summer weather.

But Labor Day is more than just one final chance to embrace the relaxed vibe of summer and soak up some rays. In fact, Labor Day boasts a unique history that’s worth celebrating for a variety of reasons.

What is Labor Day? The United States Department of Labor notes that Labor Day is a celebration of American workers that dates back to the 19th century.

The day is meant to commemorate the contributions workers in the United States have made to the nation, helping to make it one of the strongest and most prosperous countries in the world.

Who came up with the idea of

Labor Day? Despite the fact that municipal legislation surrounding Labor Day was initially introduced in the 1880s, debate remains as to just who should be credited with proposing a day to honor American workers. Some records suggest that Peter J. McGuire, who served as general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and cofounded the American Federation of Labor, deserves the credit for Labor Day. However, the Department of Labor notes that many people believe a machinist named Matthew Maguire (no relation to Peter) was the first to propose a holiday honoring workers in 1882. At that time Maguire was serving as secretary of New York’s Central Labor Union, which later adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic. The first Labor Day was ultimately

celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in accordance with the plans made by the Central Labor Union, which strongly suggests that Maguire does, in fact, deserve the credit for coming up with the holiday.

Why celebrate Labor Day? Labor Day is worth celebrating because, without the contributions of millions of workers every year, the United States would not be the success story it is and has been for more than 200 years. In addition to the United States, many countries across the globe, including Canada and Australia, have their own versions of Labor Day. Labor Day weekend might now be seen as the unofficial end of summer. But this Labor Day weekend, celebrants and workers should remember that Labor Day also should be a time to reflect on the value of hard work.
