Benedict, president and CEO of UR MedicineJones Memorial Hospital, was nominated for the 2020 award by state Sen. George M. Borrello, RChautauqua County. U.S. Rep. Tom Reed, Assemblyman Joseph Giglio and community and healthcare leaders were at the Wellsville Country Club to recognize Benedict for her achievements and contributions to the community. Quicklee’s site at Belmont exit to include Dunkin’ franchise
BELMONT — Quicklee’s Convenience Stores says that its new Belmont Truck Stop and Travel Center will include a Dunkin’ franchise. The travel center off Interstate 86 at Route 19 is projected to open by the end of this month; the new Dunkin’ location will open soon thereafter. “Since we announced our plan to open a new location in Belmont, we’ve had an outpouring of support from the local community,” said Ken Perelli, vice president of Quicklee’s. “People are excited about the development, they’ve reached out with thoughts, and we are pleased to let them know that Dunkin’ will be serving their community soon.”

Allegany County health officials call for bat safety awareness

BELMONT — Even as the global pandemic fills health-related headlines, this is still bat country. Potentially rabid-bat country. Allegany County Department of Health officials cautioned residents to be on the lookout for bats in their homes as cooler weather approaches in the fall. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, seven in 10 human rabies cases in the U.S. stems from contact with bats. For this region, bats are the primary vector, with raccoons coming in second. Most cases of bat-transmitted rabies occur inside homes or camps, often while victims are sleeping. While bats are common inside homes in the region, officials reported that 97% of bats tested at the state Wadsworth Center’s Rabies Laboratory do not have rabies. Unfortunately, without testing, they said, releasing or killing the bat before it is tested can lead to a series of injections to treat the fatal disease just in case. Due to the small size of bat bites, a child, an older person, someone who is speech impaired or someone who is sleeping while a bat is in their room may not be able to tell you if they were bit-
ten — possibly leading to precautionary rabies treatment. The health department offers steps to take to keep bats out of the home environment, especially sleeping quarters: • Close unscreened doors and windows open to the outside. • Use window screens, chimney caps, and draftguards beneath doors to attics. • Seal up all openings larger than 1/2 inch by 1/2 • inch square into the attic, basement, walls, or occupied areas of the house including electrical and plumbing openings. • Use materials such as expanding spray-on foam, caulk, wire mesh, wood that fits tightly, steel wool or polypropylene bird netting to seal or cover gaps and holes. • Listen to see if you hear squeaking noises coming from attic, walls, or elsewhere. • Check attic space, rafters, porches, and walls for signs of roosting bats, including bat guano and crystallized urine, or bare scratched areas on beams. • Walk around the outside of the house at dusk to see if bats are flying out of the house to feed and before dawn to see if bats are flying into the house to roost.
• Special netting can be used to allow bats to exit a house, but not re-enter • Pest control experts specializing in bat control should be consulted when necessary. • Killing or poisoning the bats is seldom a necessary or desirable solution, as bats eat insects like mosquitos which are more likely to transmit diseases like West Nile Virus . • Do not seal openings while bats are inside, as it may drive them into occupied areas or create a sanitary problem if the bats are trapped and die inside. • Major home renovations and sealing should be done during the winter when bats have mostly left buildings. The department of health also stressed that if bats are found in the home that they be captured alive for testing. How to capture a bat: • Turn on room lights and close the windows • Close the room and closet doors • Wait for the bat to land • Wearing heavy gloves, place a coffee can, pail or similar container over the bat • Slide a piece of cardboard underneath the container or against the top of the container, turn it right side up and tape
the cardboard tightly to the container. Allegany County Pheasant Program gets National Fuel donation
The Allegany County Pheasant Program Inc. has received a donation totaling $749.84 from the National Fuel’s 2020 Employee Charitable Giving Program. The National Fuel Gas Company Foundation matched the employee’s $374.92 payroll deduction donation for the $749.84 total. What can and cannot be composted
Avid gardeners know that compost can add vital nutrients to soil used in gardens, container plants and lawns. The fact that compost is so versatile and nutrientdense may not even be its most admirable quality. Made from items used in and around the house, compost costs just about nothing to produce. The raw materials that make up compost come from organic waste. These can be disposables from the garden and kitchen, as well as other areas around the house. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, yard trimmings and food scraps add up to 20 to 30 percent of the municipal solid waste in the United States. Turning waste into compost not only helps the landscape, but also the planet. Compost is relatively easy to make, and there are scores of materials that can be put into compost. But it is just as essential to know which ingredients cannot be used in compost.
Okay for compost Most organic materials, or items that were once living, can be used in compost. Plant-based items used in cooking, such as potato peelings, carrot skins, banana peels, cocoa hulls, coffee grounds and filters, corn cobs, apple cores, egg shells, fruit peels, kelp, and nut shells, can be added to compost. Other items from around the house, like unused kitty litter, hair, shredded newspapers and cardboard, leaves, flowers, paper, pine needles, ashes, and sawdust, can be successfully added to compost. Animal products like bones, butter, milk, fish skins, and meat, may decompose and start to smell foul. Maggots, parasites, pathogens, and other microorganisms can form in the compost. These materials also may attract flies and scavenger animals. Plus, they decompose very slowly. Any personal hygiene products should be avoided because they are tainted by human fluids and that can pose a health risk.
While weeds are not harmful in compost piles, there is the risk that seeds can germinate and then infiltrate garden beds when the compost is used. The same can be said for tomato plants and some other hardy fruits and vegetables. Compost is a winner in the garden and around the landscape. Learning which ingredients can and can’t be added to compost piles is useful for any gardener.

Sweating a pipe refers to soldering a pipe or the joint. Sweating seals a new joint or mends a fault. When sweating a pipe, it is important to do the job correctly so that a soldered pipe can last for years and years. PlanItDIY, a source for how-to advice, says that sweating pipes involves some key steps.

A home is a safe haven for its residents. No matter what’s going on at school or the office, many people know they can relax in comfort and safety when they arrive home at the end of a day. Safety at home is something that can be taken for granted until it’s too late. The National Fire Protection Association notes that each year more than 47,000 home fires in the United States are caused by electrical failure or malfunction. Overloaded electrical circuits are a frequent culprit in residential fires. Fortunately, overloaded circuits are preventable. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International, the following are some potential indicators that circuits are overloaded. • Flickering, blinking or dimming lights • Frequently tripped circuit breakers or blown fuses

• Cut the pipes to the right length using a copper tube cutter or hacksaw. • Use a file or wire brush to remove burs and smooth down the ends. • Clean the end of the copper pipe with a cleaning brush until the surface is bright all around. In addition, clean the inside of all fittings. • Brush plumbing flux on the brushed surfaces and assemble the joint. The how-to resource Hunker says flux is an acidic paste applied to all of the pieces of copper that you want to connect together. The flux paste will draw in the solder after the pipe is heated using a blow torch. The acid in the flux attracts the solder into the seam between the two
copper pieces and fills the gap while creating a semipermanent bond between the pieces. • To create the seal, move the flame around the joint to heat it evenly. The copper will get shiny, and the flux will melt. When the pipe begins to dull and the flux sizzles and smokes, it is time to apply solder. Touch leadfree plumbing solder to the joint and apply more heat. • The sweating process is finished when the solder bubbles out of the end of the seam. Let cool and the joint should now be water-tight. Individuals can speak with experts at hardware and home improvement stores to find the best products for their needs and skill levels.

• Never use extension cords or multi-outlet converters for appliances. • All major appliances should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet. Only one heat-producing appliance should be plugged into a receptacle outlet at any given time. • Consider adding new outlets to your home. Heavy reliance on extension cords indicates that your home does not have enough outlets. Bring in a qualified electrician to inspect your home to determine if more outlets are necessary. • Recognize that power strips only add additional outlets; they do not change the amount of power being received from the outlet.
