Randolph Central School to join Harvard center on rural education
RANDOLPH — The Randolph Central School District recently joined 50 other rural schools as a part of the National Center for Rural Education Research Networks (NCRERN), an initiative of the Center for Education Policy Research (CEPR) at Harvard University. Funded by the Institute of Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education, the district will have the opportunity to apply the Proving Ground model of evidence-based improvement to address chronic absenteeism, college readiness and college enrollment. “Students who are chronically absent are at-risk for falling behind and ultimately dropping out,” said Randolph Superintendent Kaine Kelly. “As part of our work with the National Center for Rural Education Research Networks, our district hopes not only to learn from other rural districts but also to share with them ideas for promising evidenced-based
practices that will help students feel welcome, successful and supported.” NCRERN will produce tools for identifying students most at risk for absenteeism and being unprepared for college as well as change management resources designed to guide rural schools in addressing chronic absenteeism, college readiness, and college enrollment. Throughout the five years, the Center’s member districts will collaborate on shared challenges, learning from each other to guide future work on school improvement. “The network brings together our expertise in strategic management and analytics and our partners’ expertise in supporting rural students,” said Bi Vuong, Proving Ground director and NCRERN interim director. “We are excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with districts committed to learning with us and sharing their expertise with each other.” Applicants were chosen based on
alignment between the district’s strategic goals and the work of the Center, capacity to utilize data for decision making, commitment to continuous improvement practices and geographic distribution. Nearby Gowanda Central School District was also selected to join the rural education center. “The districts selected to be part of the National Center for Rural Education Research Network deserve congratulations,” said Anita Murphy, Capital Region BOCES district superintendent. “Their selection represents a uniquely valuable opportunity for them to bring the power of evidence and the Proving Ground improvement model to bear on some of the most pressing issues facing rural districts including chronic absenteeism and college readiness and enrollment. I look forward to learning alongside our districts as they work to improve student outcomes together.”

HOROSCOPE
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Don’t let your emotions get the best of you in a heated situation, Aries. You can come out on top if you remain calm and think through your responses with utmost caution. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, there are a few different ways you can play an upcoming situation. Taking a back seat and letting another person lead the way may be the smartest strategy. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 A few opportunities may drop into your lap, Gemini. However, just because things come about easily does not mean they are the right choices for right now. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, keeping things bottled up until the last minute seems to be the way you have been operating lately. You may want to try sharing your feelings and seeking feedback. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Wearing your emotions on your sleeve may get you attention, Leo, but it won’t necessarily be the kind of attention you were hoping for. Reconsider what you share. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, it can be challenging to relinquish control, but that is just what you will have to do at some point this week. This will be a good lesson to learn. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 It’s hard to see someone’s perspective when you have never gone through this particular situation, Libra. Keep that in mind when supporting a loved one in need. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 All it takes is a subtle change of perception to turn a situation around, Scorpio. Start by taking a few risks outside of your comfort zone for some new inspiration. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, it is good to be proud of your accomplishments. Just be sure not to come across as boastful, especially in certain company. You don’t want to come across as bragging. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, asking for help is not admitting weakness. If you feel you are in over your head, call in the reinforcements. Then you can get back on track more quickly. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Good fortune is coming your way, and you can certainly spread the wealth if you desire, Aquarius. Chances are there are a few other people who can use a smile in the weeks to come PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Job security may have you sticking with a position long after the time has come to move on, Pisces. Keep kids safe when mowing the lawn
Catt. Co. Pennysaver - For Reader Ads Call 945-1500
Warm weather beckons many people outdoors. Perhaps no group of people like being out in the warm sun more than children. Children should be encouraged to spend time outdoors when the weather allows, as physical activity is one of the hallmarks of a healthy lifestyle. But parents must exercise caution when kids are playing in the yard, especially when the grass is being mowed. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than

by kids 16 and older. No child should use a mower without first being taught how to operate it, and kids should always wear eye protection and close-toed shoes when mowing. In addition, parents should never allow children to ride as passengers while mowing the lawn. Mower-related injuries are preventable if parents emphasize safety. The following are some tips, courtesy of the AAP, that parents can follow to ensure their kids do not become one of the
9,000 children in the United States go to the emergency room for lawn mower-related injuries every year. Of the 800 children who are run over by mowers each year, 600 ultimately require amputations. Many mower-related injuries occur when children who are too young and/or too weak to operate a mower are asked to do so. The AAP recommends that only children age 12 and older operate push mowers, while riding mowers should only be used
thousands of children who suffer mower-related injuries in a given year. • Only use a mower with a control that stops the mower blade from moving if the handle is let go. • Keep children out of the yard while mowing. Mower blades can shoot rocks, sticks or other common yard debris out in all directions, and these trajectories put kids at risk of injuries to their eyes and other parts of their bodies.

It’s a nearly-scientific fact that you can solve most any problem by putting dirt on it. Scraped knee? Dirt. Embarrassing bald spot? Dirt. Nagging mother-in-law? Dirt. Lots of it. Juuust kidding. The point is, when people need a little more excitement in life, they probably just need to add a little dirt. And that’s where KIOTI tractors come in. Intuitively designed to dominate the dirt, these machines make it an easy decision for anyone also inclined to favor the filthy.

• Scour the yard for toys before mowing. Toys left in the yard can become trajectories if not removed prior to mowing, and chipped toys with sharp edges can pose a threat to kids even after the grass has been cut. • Exercise caution if going in reverse. The AAP advises against pulling a mower backward or shifting into reverse unless absolutely necessary. If you must do so, look behind you to make sure no kids are trailing
you or are nearby. • Only mow when there is adequate daylight. • Periodically inspect your mower. Periodic inspections of your mower can help you make sure guards, shields, switches, and other safety devices are in proper working order. When mowing their lawns, parents must make safety their utmost priority to ensure kids do not suffer mower-related injuries.

YELLOW PAGE The process of buying a home can be unlike any experience prospective buyers have ever had. After finding a home they like and coming to an agreement on a sale price with the seller, buyers can expect to add many items to their to-do list. One of the first things to jot down on that list is scheduling a home inspection. Home inspections are a vital part of the home buying process. Such inspections can protect buyers as they’re on the cusp of making what will likely be the most significant investment of their lives. Understanding the home inspection process can help buyers during an exciting yet potentially nerve-wracking time in their lives. What is a home inspection? The American Society of Home Inspectors defines a home inspection as an objective visual examination of the physical structure and systems of a house. Inspectors will conduct visual examinations from the roof to the foundation of the home. Addi-

What do inspectors examine? The ASHI notes that inspectors will examine the condition of various parts of the home. The heating system, central air conditioning unit, interior plumbing and electrical systems, roof (though inspectors will not climb onto the roof), attic and insulation will be examined. Inspectors also will examine walls, ceilings, floors, windows, doors, the foundation of the home, basement (or crawl space), and structural components.
Can a home fail inspection? Homes cannot fail home inspections, which are just assessments of a home’s existing condition. Municipal inspections are separate inspections conducted by government agencies to verify that a prop-

Many children are introduced to music instruction at school. After being introduced to band, chorus and various instruments, students may be eager to explore music. Young students are often introduced to the recorder or ukulele in the early grades and then given the opportunity to join primary bands as they move through elementary school and into middle school. Some children also may want to supplement school music lessons with private music tutors, who can provide more in-depth instruction.
Parents considering making a commitment to music instruction may find that kids benefit from being involved with music in many ways, some of which may be surprising. • The New England Board of Higher Education says several studies show that consistent music education improves vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. Emerging evidence points to an area of the brain that controls both musical ability and language comprehension as being more closely
Body diversity has become the topic du jour in the entertainment and modeling worlds. According to the data polling source Supplied and beauty manufacturing company Dove, nine in 10 women opt out of important life activities because of body image issues. A similar percentage of women put their health at risk to stop themselves from eating to lose weight. Cross-cultural research by Dove has indicated that body image recently reached critical impact levels. But thanks to more outspoken models and high-profile individuals, body image and self-esteem as these issues relate to women is improving. pated in special music classes as part of an arts study program saw their reading skills and math proficiency increase dramatically. • Introducing music lessons to young children can have profound effects on their social development. Music fosters greater trust and cooperation, as well as a sense of community and belonging. • Another benefit of music education is it allows children to harness their creativity and express it in a healthy way. • The music instruction company Music U says children with developmental disorders and mental health issues might be able to unlock their potential with music. Music therapy has been shown to affect significant change in children with autism-spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, attachment disorders, cerebral palsy, and more. Music instruction both in and out of the classroom can be a benefit to young learners.
Women redefining opinions on body image and self-esteem
At the end of January 2018, beauty history was made when Ashley Graham was picked up by Revlon to be the first “plus-sized” model in history to land a major beauty contract, joining Gal Gadot, Imaan Hammam and Raquel Zimmerman in the new “Live Boldly” campaign. Graham also broke down barriers by being one of a handful of non sample-sized models to appear in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.

related than previously thought. • Music education may help young children learn words and how to pronounce them, as learning to play music enables them to process the many new sounds they hear from others. • Researchers have discovered a strong relationship between participating in school arts and academic success as demonstrated by students’ grade point averages, according to the National Association for Music Education. • The relationship between music and academic performance has been studied for decades. As far back as 1988, studies have been conducted about the benefits of music education. An analysis of data from the National Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988 demonstrated a significant correlation between participation in school music groups and achievement in math and English. And a 1996 study published in Nature found first graders who partici-

in media depictions, a new body ideal of lean and toned rather than “skinny,” and because a greater number of people in North America are simply larger. Women can boost their self-esteem and reverse negative feelings about their bodies by introducing new thinking patterns. • Don’t always believe what you see. Some companies use very small models for their marketing efforts and through digital photo manipulation whittle down bodies even further. Some models dubbed “plus-sized” do not actually meet that classification. Models are considered plus sized if they wear between a size eight and 12, with some as small as size six. The average American woman wears a size 16, according to the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology and Education, and that’s at the lower end of “plus sized.” • Shop fit not size. What’s appearing on racks may be subjected to “vanity sizing,” where everything from jeans to swimwear is cut small. Rather than focusing on sizes on the tags, women should choose items that fit well and feel comfortable. • Make a list of positive attributes. The National Eating Disorders Association recommends women focus on the things they like about themselves and attributes that pertain to more than their appearance. • Choose positive friends. Women can surround themselves with positive-minded people who do not compare their bodies to others’. Female self-esteem and positive body images are improving as more women and industries promote body positivity.

Month As summer draws to a close and children start heading back to school, family life can get pretty hectic. It’s important to remember – and share with your children – some key tips that will help keep them safe and healthy throughout the school year. Whether children walk, ride their bicycle or take the bus to school, it is vitally important that they – and the motorists around them – take proper safety precautions. Walkers » Walk on the sidewalk; if there is no sidewalk and you must walk in the street, walk facing traffic. Before crossing the street, stop and look left, right and left again to see if cars are coming. Never dart out in front of a parked car. Parents: Practice walking to school with your child, crossing streets at crosswalks when available. Never walk while texting or talking on the phone. Do not walk while using headphones. Bike Riders » Always wear a helmet that is fitted and secured properly.Children need to know the rules of the road: Ride single file on the right side of the road, come to a complete stop before crossing the street and walk the bike across Watch for opening car doors and other hazards. Use hand signals when turning. Wear bright-colored clothing Bus Riders » Teach children the proper way to get on and off the bus. Line up 6 feet away from the curb as the bus approaches. If seat belts are available, buckle up. Wait for the bus to stop completely before standing. Do not cross in front of the bus if possible, or walk at least 10 feet ahead until you can see the other drivers.

Maintenance a must when wearing contact lenses
An alternative to eyeglasses, contact lenses are widely used across the globe. Contact lenses provide the inconspicuous clarity many people desire, and the wide array of materials used to make lenses coupled with the assortment of styles of contact lenses have helped to make them
more comfortable than ever before. It may seem like contact lenses are a relatively recent invention, but they’ve actually been around far longer than one would think. As far back as 1508, Leonardo da Vinci illustrated the concept of contact lenses. Three
hundred years later a British astronomer named Sir John Herschel conceptualized the practical lens design. First designs of contact lenses covered the entire eye and were made from glass. By 1948, plastic contact lenses came on the scene and were designed to cover only the eye’s cornea. Through the 20th century, contacts continued to evolve. It is believed that now more than 30 million people in the United States alone wear contact lenses. Two-thirds of those wearers are female, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Because contact lenses come in direct contact with the eye, maintenance is especially important. Medical professionals say that teenagers as
young as 13 may be able to wear contacts. It’s never too early to share the proper care procedures. The following are contact lens care guidelines, courtesy of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. • Wash hands with soap and water and dry with a lint-free towel before handling contact lenses. • Never store lenses in water (tap or sterile). Contact lenses must be stored in special disinfecting lens solution. • Saliva is not a sterile solution and should not be used to moisten dry contacts. • Minimize lenses’ contact with water. Remove them before swimming. • Always follow the recommended lens cleaning and storage guidelines from an
eye care professional and the contact solution manufacturer. • Many professionals advise you to rub and rinse contact lenses even if the solution used is a “no-rub” variety. • Leave empty contact cases open to air dry. • Replace storage cases and contact lenses as advised by the manufacturer or your eye care professional. Cases can be a source of contamination if they are cracked, dirty or damaged. • Do not allow the tip of the solution bottle to come in contact with any surface, and keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Following these recommendations and adhering to proper hygiene can prevent eye infections and injury.
