Angelica Civil War Weekend canceled due to COVID-19
By BOB CLARK
ANGELICA — Another Allegany County event is gone with the wind this year due to COVID-19. Terry Parker, a county judge and member of the reenacting 136th New York Volunteer Infantry, “The Ironclads,” announced that the 17th annual Angelica Civil War Weekend has been canceled for this September due to the pandemic and related state rules for gatherings. “We had approvals to go ahead from the Village and local community, and a great deal of enthusiasm from reenactors hoping to save at least one event from the schedule,” Parker said Monday. “Local Health Department officials also were supportive, and gave us advice in our attempt to salvage some form
of event. However, recent actions by the State, including using State Police to shut down a local outdoor music festival, made it clear that the State was not so accommodating.” “We tried our best to keep the event for all of us and for the public at large, who appear from recent events to need historical education and context more than ever. But it was not to be,” he added. “Holding a “public” event, having to limit both attendees and spectators to very small numbers, mask requirements and barring close proximity would render the effort useless for all.” Parker noted that the event is set to return from Sept. 24-26, 2021. Originally formed as an event for the Allegheny Highlands Council for Scouts BSA members, the event
turned into a townwide weekend of activities. Events have typically included tours for the county’s eighth graders, street battles, a market and various history lectures and activities. Much like the events in 2020, disease played a major role in the war itself more than 150 years ago. An estimated two-thirds of the 660,000 Civil War casualties were caused by infectious disease, and about half of all New York soldiers’ deaths, according to the American Battlefield Trust. The cancellation is the latest in summer events for “the village where history lives.” Several other events, including July’s Allegany County Fair and August’s Angelica Heritage Days, were also canceled due to the pandemic.

BELMONT — One new case of COVID-19 was reported in Allegany County early this week as several local nonprofits announced the return of some programs. The Allegany County Department of Health reported that the case count was at 80 in the county, after rising one on Sunday. To date, 78 have resulted in recoveries, while one is still active and one death was reported in mid-March. Quarantines and isolations have been ordered 1,117 times since March, with 37 still active. Belmont Farmers Market to give back this week
By CINDY WAGNER
BELMONT — Local farmers markets are giving back to the community that supports them this week. The Belmont Farmers Market was to participate in Give Back New York, a week-long program from the Farmers’ Market Federation of New York. The program encourages farm markets across the state to collect fresh produce and canned goods from both customers and vendors. “We wanted to find a way to say thank you to
customers who were very supportive of farmers markets and local food throughout the current health crisis,” said Diane Eggert, executive director of the federation. “People seemed to choose local and markets as a safe way to shop and feed their families. The overwhelming support led us to want to find a way to thank people.” On Thursday, the Belmont market was to collect donations that will be given to the Wellspring Ministries Food Pantry, at 5993 County Road 16 in Belfast.
“We just thought that it was a good time to do this,” said Debra Wagoner, market manager. “Even as farmers we need to give back … we accept farm market checks, SNAP and double-ups,” she said. Double-ups provide the opportunity for customers of the farm market who spend $10 on fruits and vegetables on their SNAP card to get an additional $10 to spend on other items. The Allegany County Office for the Aging was to be there with education, nutrition informa-
tion and market checks. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be in attendance with information and recipe cards. Master Gardeners will be also be there to answer any questions on gardening needs. A number of vendors were also set to attend the Belmont market, including Hints Red Roof Maple with maple cotton candy and popcorn. “We urge people to come out Thursday and support this program and the farm market,” Wagoner said. “Should be a fun day for all.”

Wellsville moves to put former Municipal Building up for sale WELLSVILLE — The village of Wellsville is putting the former Municipal Building at 156 N. Main St. up for bid. The village moved its offices to the newly renovated 23 North building in 2019. The Evening Tribune of Hornell reported that Public Works department workers have been working on clearing out remaining furniture in the former Municipal Building. The village trustees approved selling the building earlier this week. Deputy Mayor Jeremy Cole said the bid notice will likely be ready by the board’s next meeting in August, and it will then go out to the public. The village will retain the right to reject bids. Village officials decided the move to 23 North
on North Main Street was the more economical option for taxpayers. The shift also placed the village offices in an ADAcompliant facility and opened up the potential to put the former Municipal Building back on the tax rolls. The Municipal Building, located at the corner of North Main and Jefferson, was originally a library. “My personal preference would be as much of the character of the interior is maintained as possible. There’s some history there,” Mayor Randy Shayler told The Evening Tribune. “I think we need to make it a requirement the buyer not modify the exterior.” Above all, Shayler said village officials don’t want to see the former
Municipal Building degrade into what became of the former Burrous Building — which is now 23 North. Burrous Furniture closed its doors in 2004 after almost 65 years of operation. The property changed hands several times — including two periods of ownership by Allegany County. The village took title in 2011, according to county tax records. A portion of the rear of the Burrous Building collapsed in 2012, with only limited repairs taking place until 2016. In the fall of 2018, New York State Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas announced the start of a $10.3 million renovation of the former Burrous site.

Cuba Greenway gap is focus of Wilson Legacy funding
CUBA — The Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway has been awarded a $42,000 design and access grant to help close a critical gap in the 90-mile Genesee Valley Greenway State Park. The grant, awarded through the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Legacy Funds administered by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, will be used for a feasibility study to explore possible trail routes in the village and town of Cuba. There is a gap between 1.3 miles of existing GVGSP trail at the western edge of the village and existing GVGSP trail north of the village in Allegany, Wyoming, Livingston and Monroe counties, according to FOGVG president Joan Schumaker. “Closing this trail gap is essential for both the GVGSP and the people in Cuba,” she says. “We are most thankful that this grant will allow us to move closer to achieving this goal.” The study will include an analysis of the possibility of state ownership of a trail route and prioritize recommendations with an implementation schedule, including timeframes to complete the Cuba trail route options for connecting the Greenway. One special focus of the study will be the Interstate 86 barrier, which separates the village trail section options from the Cuba-Rushford High School. Identifying a way to close this trail gap will provide a safe route to

school for students from the village. In supporting the grant request, Carlos Gildemeister, superintendent of the Cuba-Rushford district, says the GVG passageway near the school could potentially have an environmentally friendly rest-stop maintained by students for public enjoyment and recreation. “This type of involvement and responsibility on the part of students would teach them responsibility and connect them to the benefit being added to the greater communities,” Gildemeister says. The grant also complements FOGVG’s efforts to
create a series of Greenway Trail Towns, an initiative to revitalize rural communities by growing outdoor tourism and small businesses, building a foundation for long-term economic development and creating recreational opportunities with healthy outcomes. This initiative will also help preserve Cuba’s historic and natural resources for local residents, supporters say. FOGVG director Carl Schoenthal, who is leading an effort to establish trail towns along the GVG while also serving as an administrator of the grant, says another aspect of the
study is to identify a Cuba entrance to the Greenway. He says such a spot would serve as a stateowned “gateway” from the south to the entire GVGSP. By establishing a continuous GVGSP and a gateway within the village, Cuba can become a GVG Trail Town. FOGVG was formed in 1993 to work to establish and maintain a public, multi-use trail and natural greenway corridor along the abandoned Genesee Valley Canal and its successor, the Pennsylvania Railroad, Rochester Division, from the Erie Canal Heritage Trail in Rochester to Hinsdale.

Factors that can put kids at risk of vision problems
Vision can be taken for granted. Unless a person has experienced diminished vision or temporary or permanent vision loss, he or she likely cannot imagine life without the ability to see. But such a life is a reality for people across the globe, including many children. The American Optometric Association notes that children who exhibit certain ocular signs and symptoms require a prompt, comprehensive eye examination to reduce their risk of vision loss. In addition, the AOA notes that certain factors can put kids at significant risk for eye and vision problems. Learning about these factors may help parents recognize vision problems in their children before they contribute to substantial vision loss. • Prematurity, low

Rubella, toxoplasmosis, venereal disease, herpes, cytomegalovirus or human immunodeficiency virus are examples of infections that can occur during pregnancy that raise a child’s risk of eye or vision problems. • Maternal smoking, use of alcohol or illicit drug use during pregnancy • Cortical visual impairment • A difficult or assisted labor, which may be associated with fetal distress

• High or progressive refractive error • Strabismus, a condition in which a person cannot align both eyes simultaneously or under normal conditions. This condition is sometimes referred to as “cross-eyed” or “wall-eyed.” • Anisometropia, a condition that causes the eyes to focus unevenly. This condition is often marked by one eye being a different size or shape than the other. • Known or suspected neurodevelopmental disorders • Systemic health conditions with potential ocular manifestations • Eye surgery or previous eye injury • Taking prescription or nonprescription drugs (e.g., over the counter medications, supplements, herbal remedies) with potential ocular side effects Parents also should know the eye exam recommendations for their children’s ages. AOA guidelines recommend children receive their first eye exam between six and 12 months of age. Children should receive at least one additional exam between the ages of three and five, while kids between the ages of six and 17 should get annual exams. Vision problems can affect youngsters of all ages and backgrounds. Learning the risk factors for such problems can help parents know when to contact their children’s eye doctors.

The benefits of smart refrigerators
Smart technology can help people manage the hustle and bustle of everyday life. For example, people who utilize smart technology in their homes can adjust their thermostats, dim or increase lighting in a room, adjust the volume on their televisions, and lock their doors. Thanks to smart technology, homeowners can do all of those things and more in mere seconds, all without getting off the couch. Many people were quick to embrace smart technology in their living rooms, where families typically gather to watch movies and entertain guests. But smart technology can be utilized in every room of the house, including the kitchen. In fact, smart refrigerators are one smart appliance that forecasters predict will become increasingly popular in the coming years. A 2019 report from Grand View Research estimated that the global smart refrigerators market size, which was valued at roughly $254 million in 2018, will expand at a compound annual growth rate of 13.7 percent between 2018 and 2025. So while smart refrigerators might be a curiosity for many homeowners at the moment, they will very likely become a staple of many kitchens in the years to come, as adults become more informed about the ways they can benefit by bringing smart tech into their kitchens. • Smart refrigerators can reduce food waste. Many people have found spoiled food in their refrigerators, and the problem of food
waste is considerable across the globe. According to the United Nations Development Program, 20 percent of food purchased in India is discarded, while the Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that 133 billion pounds of food are wasted in the United States every year. Smart refrigerators can help reduce food waste by reminding owners of expiration dates, potentially compelling them to make use of food before it needs to be discarded. • Smart refrigerators can simplify grocery shopping. The HBS Digital Initiative, which aims to build community and expertise around digital transformation at Harvard Business School and Beyond, notes that some smart refrigerators can be linked to online grocery shopping apps, potentially putting an end to instances in which shoppers forget items at the
Maximize time spent in the pool
One of the advantages of having a pool right in the backyard is the convenience of being able to take a dip anytime you so desire. Spending time in the pool is a great way to kick off summer vacations — especially if that vacation is a staycation. The pool also is a fun gathering place for casual barbecues or hangouts with friends. The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals says there are 10.4 million residential swimming pools in the United States. The Pool & Spa Marketing group has found that the number of pool permits issued in 2018 in Canada (the most recent year for data) was the third highest in the last 14 years, indicating a booming pool market that continues to show promise, especially considering that the data does not reflect many of the rural gro- areas that do not require building permits for pool cery store. Homeowners want their residences to look inviting inside and out. Part of keeping an attractive property involves addressing issues that can compromise not only the appearance of a home, but even its integrity. People who live in regions with high humidity may find their homes are vulnerable to exterior mildew growth. Mildew is a kind of mold. Molds include all species of microscopic fungi that grow in the form of hyphae, which are multicellular filaments, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Mold thrives on any organic matter and surfaces with moisture management problems. Mildew, in particular, lives on shower walls, windowsills and other places where moisture levels are high. Mildew also can grow on home siding as well as fences and other exterior structures. While typically gray or white, mildew can be various colors. Experts recommend various cleansers to help combat the issue of mildew on a home. One of the first products that homeowners tend to reach for is sodium hypochlorite, which is a standard bleach used in laundry and pool sanitation. While sodium hypochlorite seems to

TSP needs to be used with extreme caution. When using TSP, wear long sleeves, gloves, goggles, and a respiratory mask, says Today’s Homeowner. The product also requires adequate ventilation. There also are some environmental concerns, as TSP can damage foliage. In addition, if the product ends up in lakes and streams, it can trigger an overgrowth of algae that results in the depletion of oxygen levels in the water. Eco-conscious homeowners may want to try oxy cleansers before TSP. Mildew shies away from bright sunlight, so it tends to grow
on the north side of homes. Removing trees or other foliage that can further block sunlight to areas of the house can help eradicate mildew growth and stop it before it starts. Another tactic is to clean out gutters regularly and thoroughly to reduce moisture and to prevent decomposing debris from running over the edge of the gutters. This runoff can drip down the home’s siding and spread the mildew to other areas. Mildew can be problematic any time of year. Clean up mildew when the weather cools down to spruce up the look of a home.

make mildew vanish, those at This Old House say that chlorine evaporates too quickly to get to mildew’s roots on porous surfaces, such as wood or vinyl siding. Bleach also can stain clothing and damage foliage around the house. Hydrogen peroxide, or oxygen bleach, is less volatile, will not affect foliage and can clean mildew, algae and dirt on and below the surface. Trisodium phosphate is another effective cleanser. Commonly known as TSP, it often succeeds where other solutions fail in regard to stubborn stains and mildew. TSP also works well on various exterior surfaces.

Auto Club Standard vehicle maintenance intervals you may want to follow No two automobiles are the same. So it makes sense that vehicles have different maintenance guidelines. Such guidelines, which include recommendations regarding how frequently oil should be changed and how often tires should be rotated, are typically included in vehicle owner’s manuals. Drivers are urged to familiarize themselves with these guidelines, which can protect vehicles as well as the people inside them. According to CarGurus®, a free internetbased automotive resource, many manufacturers adhere to the 30-60-90 schedule. That schedule recommends everything from inspections to part replacements when vehicles reach 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 miles. These recommendations are meant to serve as guidelines, and drivers should know that certain factors can affect how often routine maintenance should occur and when parts must be replaced. For example, harsh driving conditions
can lead to excessive wear and tear that causes parts to erode long before owner’s manuals suggest they should. As a result, drivers should always speak with their mechanics during service appointments to determine if their vehicles are aging gracefully or if they need a little extra TLC. Drivers should always read their manuals for recommended service intervals. The following are some general maintenance guidelines, courtesy of CarGurus®, that drivers can keep in mind as the miles pile up on

their vehicles’ odometers. • Oil and oil filter: Many new cars now run on synthetic oil, which tends to last between 5,000 and 10,000 miles. Older vehicles using traditional oil may need to adhere to the oncestandard oil change interval of 3,000 miles. Mechanics will typically replace oil filters with the same frequency as they replace oil. • Air filter: Air filters generally need to be replaced every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. However, CarGurus® notes that drivers who park in dusty environments should err on the side of caution and have their air filters replaced every 15,000 miles. • Fuel filter: Clogged
fuel filters can affect engine performance and even prevent engines from running. Fuel filters may need to be changed at 30,000-mile intervals. • Battery: A typical car battery tends to last around four or five years. • Brake pads: Worn out brake pads will make a screeching sound. Brake pads should last around 50,000 miles, though they should be inspected at regular intervals regardless of mileage. • Brake rotors: Brake rotors can be resurfaced or replaced, and this should be done around 60,000 miles. Resurfacing can only be done once and is less expensive than a full replacement. • Hoses: Hoses crack over time, but generally do not need to be replaced until they reach the 90,000-mile mark. However, hoses should be inspected routinely, as busted hoses can cause very significant damage. Recommended maintenance intervals are only intended to serve as guidelines. If drivers notice any changes in vehicle performance, they should consult a mechanic immediately, regardless of how many miles are on their cars or trucks.

Some telltale signs of engine troubles
Engine troubles are many drivers’ worst nightmares. Whether they occur out on the road or they prevent drivers from leaving their driveways in the morning, engine troubles can quickly derail plans and cost drivers substantial amounts of money. Thankfully, engine troubles are often noticeable long before cars break down. Drivers who learn to recognize the signs that suggest engines might be in need of work can avoid being stranded on the road or at home. • Vehicle shaking: One telltale sign of engine trouble is when a vehicle shakes while it’s moving. Drivers of old cars and trucks may not expect the smoothest of rides, but cars that shake, sometimes violently, could be experiencing problems. Sometimes a car might shake if its spark plugs need replacing. That’s an easy, inexpensive fix that drivers can do on their own in a matter of minutes. A more serious cause of the vehicle shaking could be problems with its timing belt or fuel intake system. Drivers who inspect and/or replace their spark plugs but notice their vehicles are still shaking should take their cars into their mechanics immediately. • Sudden gas mileage reduction: Drivers who notice they’re not getting as much bang for their gas bucks as they used to might have engine troubles to blame. According to Pep Boys, a dropoff in gas mileage might be indicative of an issue in the compression stroke of the engine. Such an issue can typically be fixed by having the fuel system serviced, which will clean the fuel system and can help restore the vehicle’s performance and reduce emissions. • Noises: If driving has become as noisy as a rock concert, drivers should take heed that this could be indicative of engine trouble. Pep Boys notes that noises typically indicate abnormalities in the combustion flow. Such noises may include knocking, hissing and popping. Vehicles making these noises should be taken to a mechanic immediately. • Stalling: Vehicles that jerk or stall also may be experiencing engine troubles. While old spark plugs might be the culprit, stalling or jerking may indicate clogged fuel lines or fuel filters. Such issues may also be traced to issues with the vehicle’s computer system. Bring such issues to the attention of a mechanic, and reduce their frequency with regular oil changes.
