Bradford Senior Citizens Expo Aug. 2; Causer Offices in Bradford, Kane to be Closed MONEYSAVER SHOPPING NEWS
BRADFORD – Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) is reminding area senior citizens of the 17th annual Senior Citizens Expo this Friday, Aug. 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Sports and Fitness Gymnasium. “This is always an informative event that is helpful not only to senior citizens but to their family members and caregivers as well,” Causer said. “I encourage everyone to come out and take advantage of the opportunity to get a wealth of information in one convenient location.” Due to the expo, Causer’s offices in Bradford and Kane will be closed all day. The office in Coudersport will remain open and may be reached by calling 814-274-9769. The event is free to attend, and lunch will be provided. State, county and local exhib-
itors will be on hand to distribute information and answer questions about a variety of issues. Health screenings will also be offered, and door prizes will be awarded. A new addition to the event this year features two informational sessions about REAL ID. PennDOT officials will discuss who needs to obtain a REAL ID and the documentation required to obtain it. The seminars will be held at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Additional expos are scheduled Friday, Sept. 13, at the Kane Community Center, and Friday, Oct. 11, at the Roulette Fire Hall. But this power, when wielded carelessly, can have devastating effects. Nowhere is this more evident than fire’s impact on forests across the globe. Wildfires destroy 4%* of the Earth’s surface each year, with 84%* as a result of human hand. Zippo is working with WOODCHUCK USA and launching a global Fight Fire with Fire project that aims to help counter the effects of deforestation caused
by wildfires. Zippo has pledged to plant a tree for each windproof lighter sold from the Fight Fire with Fire collection, to shine a light on the effects of wildfire, starting with Zippo’s first planting sites in Madagascar. Globally renowned storyteller, National Geographic, has documented the efforts. With unprecedented wildfires reported as far north as the Arctic Circle, and research citing humans as the main threat to the very existence of a third of all remaining animal species*, there is a shared sense of urgency
to protect our planet and biodiversity. Zippo believes every individual has the power to make a positive difference; humans are responsible for the majority of fires, so the solution also rests in our collective hands. To help educate on the problem of wildfires and their causes, National Geographic has produced a video for Zippo and a photography series in Madagascar, the world’s fourth-largest island; a land mass that has had 90% of its original forests destroyed. The content produced by National Geographic focuses on what people

Real stories show what impact the initiative is having on the ground, sharing the experiences of those who plant mangrove trees, those who work to conserve wildlife, and those who fight to undo the damage caused by fire. Powerwashing, also known as pressure-washing, utilizes a high-velocity water spray to remove dirt and residue from the exterior surfaces of a home. It is frequently used on vinyl siding, concrete and sometimes wood decks to treat mildew and other growth that accumulates over time. Powerwashing can be a great way to remove grime without having to scrub by hand. But it requires a delicate touch to get it right. Sometimes it is best to leave the job to professionals. But homeowners willing to give it a go can try powerwashing themselves, as various stores rent power washers. The home improvement website ImproveNet says that, until very recently, pressure
washers were almost exclusively commercial machines sold to professionals or rented to do-it-yourselfers. Lately manufacturers have targeted homeowners looking to buy with lightweight options. For those who see powerwashing as a routine venture, purchasing a unit may be worth the investment. It is important to exercise caution when operating a powerwashing machine. The high-velocity spray can tear through skin. It is key to get a feel for the washer, and try less pressure first to get a handle on the magnitude of the tool. Don safety gear prior to using a pressure washer. Gloves, eye protection and ear protection can be handy. Most units will connect to a standard garden hose.
Choose old clothing and expect to get wet. Never point a powerwasher hose at anyone and do not attempt to rinse feet or hands in the spray. The renovation resource The Family Handyman suggests starting with a wide-degree nozzle to test out the spray on the surface that needs to be cleaned. A 15- or 25-degree nozzle is usually the wand for general cleaning and paint stripping without damaging the surface of the home. Experiment with an optimal distance of the washer wand to get the desired cleaning effects without causing any damage. COUDERSPORT, Pa.--Carol Bianculli Jarvis, 59, a current resident of Coudersport, formerly of Lyndhurst, N.J., passed away in her home on Thursday, July 18, 2019, of health complications. Born on October 8, 1959 at St. Mary’s Hospital in
Passaic, N.J., to August and Reta Bianculli. Carol will be honored and remembered at a memorial 60 th birthday party in October 2019. Carol’s family has entrusted her care and cremation arrangements to Kevin J.

Entertaining comes easy when the weather is pleasant. Many people welcome the chance to host in warm weather, and with hosting comes the need to provide tasty foods and refreshing beverages. While grilling is often the method of choice when hosting warm weather gatherings, following up tasty grilled fare with an equally pleasing homemade dessert can set any soiree apart. “Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp” from “CrockPot: 365 Year-Round Recipes” (Publications International, Ltd.) from CrockPot test kitchens creates a cobbler-esque dessert chock-full of comforting flavors. It can be enjoyed on its own, or topped with a dollop of cream or ice
cups sliced hulled strawberries cups diced rhubarb (about 5 stalks), cut into 1⁄2-inch dice cups granulated sugar tablespoons lemon juice tablespoons cornstarch, plus water (optional) cup all-purpose flour cup old-fashioned oats cup granulated sugar cup packed brown sugar teaspoon ground ginger teaspoon ground nutmeg cup butter, cut into pieces cup sliced almonds, toasted
Coat a Crock-Pot® slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Place strawberries, rhubarb, 11⁄2 cups granulated sugar and lemon juice in the crock and mix well. Cook on high 11⁄2 hours, or until fruit is tender. If fruit is dry after cooking, add a little water. If fruit has too much liquid, mix cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water and stir into liquid. Cook on high an additional 15 minutes, or until cooking liquid is thickened. Preheat the oven to 375 F. For the topping, combine flour, oats, sugars, ginger, and nutmeg in medium bowl. Cut in butter using a pastry cutter or two knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in almonds. Remove the lid from the Crock-Pot slow cooker and gently sprinkle topping onto fruit. Transfer the stoneware to the oven. Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until tipping begins to brown.
