Did you know?
Should a person hear that a couple “tied the knot,” it’s immediately known that they got married. But just when and where does the term “tying the knot” come from? The phrase “tying the knot” is steeped in tradition, though the origins of the phrase remain open for debate. One origin
story states that tying the knot can be traced back to the Roman empire, when brides wore girdles that were tied in knots, and the groom had to eventually untie those knots to consummate the marriage. Tying the knot also may be traced to the custom of handfasting. The marriage contract was established between a bride and a groom by joining their hands together and tying them. Although accounts vary as to whether the hands were tied only during the ceremony or later, this is believed to be an ancient Renaissance or Celtic tradition. Others speculate that the phrase traces its origins to Hindu weddings in which brides and grooms tied a necklace of flowers as part of wedding tradition. Yet another theory sug-

7-Eleven parking lot, known as the “truck stop,” at 10 a.m. Marchers will be grouped by wars — starting with World War I, then World War II, Korean Conflict, Vietnam War, Gulf War and so on. Wagons and trailers will be available for those veterans unable to walk the parade route. Deb Miller, director of the Randolph Area Community Development Corporation (RACDC), said all veterans, either local, from the surrounding area or visiting, are welcome to march in the parade. Any veteran who has served or is currently serving is encouraged to participate. “We are also encouraging family members of deceased veterans, those in action and currently on active duty, or those otherwise unable to attend the parade, to please bring an 8 x 10inch photo of their veteran and march alongside our local veterans, as they walk the parade route,” she said. The RACDC, Randolph American Legion and the Randolph Boy Scouts have partnered to host this event. The event is funded, in part, by the John McLaughlin Grant through the Chautauqua Region
Community Foundation, and also support from Randolph Auto and Wegmans. The first Randolph Area Veterans Appreciation Day and parade began in August 2016, after Vietnam veteran Garry Root and his wife, Kathy, of Randolph presented the idea to Town Supervisor Dale Senn. It was met with such enthusiasm that it has continued to be an annual event in Randolph. “Come help us thank the brave men and women who have served our country by wearing red, white and blue; waving your American flag; or just stand by the curb and celebrate and cheer them on,” Miller said. Veterans need not register, but any veteran who is unable to walk the parade route should contact Miller at racdcny@gmail.com by Saturday, Aug. 3, or call the office at 358-9701, ext. 208. School kids, clubs and other organizations are welcome to participate but, if they wish to take part in the event, they should contact RACDC to let her know they are coming. Overcome wedding weather obstacles
Summer approaches with the promise of warm temperatures. Weather is one reason why summer is such a popular season to tie the knot. But just because sunny skies and rising mercury are par for the course, that does not mean Mother Nature won’t invite herself to the festivities — and attempt to upstage happy couples in the process. Some feel it’s good luck for couples to get rain on their wedding days, but many couples would trade in a little of that luck for clear skies. However, weather can be fickle, and couples who
build contingency plans into their wedding festivities are much more likely to overcome inclement weather than couples without such plans. • Have solutions for sun and heat. Couples don’t want their wedding guests or bridal party members passing out due to heat exhaustion. Make sure to offer shade if the ceremony or reception is outside. Stock the area with cold bottles of water or a chilled lemonade stand. Have fans and umbrellas available just in case guests need a way to protect themselves from the sun.
• Strong storms. Over the course of hot and humid days, storm clouds can develop and roll in. Afternoon thunderstorms are quite common on summer days. Accommodate for sudden downpours by hosting early luncheon receptions or ensure there is a plan B that includes a covered area. Couples can stash spare shoes or even rain slickers in a car to keep their wedding attire protected against rain as they dash between venues or take photos. • Embrace the rain. Vivid skies with lightning or overcast days
can make for unique and striking wedding photography. Couples needn’t look at the downside of rain, but rather they should see the opportunities for one-of-a-kind memories. • Keep a generator on standby. Storms may knock out power. Some reception halls or banquet facilities may have their own backup power, but be sure to address how power outages are handled. If need be, bring in a portable generator to keep the reception room cooled by fans. • Plan for wind. Coastal outdoor weddings present beautiful backdrops for weddings. But being near the shore may mean accepting windy conditions. Tie down tents and use weights to keep wedding programs or other papers from catching a current. The bride and her wedding party should opt for free-flowing tresses so they needn’t worry

Iconic WWII aircraft tour will touch down in Jamestown

Getting a little farther afield than usual on this one, but with so many history buffs and veterans among our readers, we wanted to pass it along. The Collings Foundation’s Wings of Freedom Tour, which features iconic World War II aircraft like the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator bombers and the P-51 Mustang fighter, will fly into the Chautauqua County/ Jamestown Airport Aug. 12-15. The B-17, nicknamed “Nine O Nine,” is one of only nine in flying condition in the United States, while the B-24J (“Witchcraft”) is, according to the foundation, the sole remaining example of its type flying in the world. The B-25 model is best
known for being used in the daring April 1942 bombing raid on Tokyo by Col. James Doolittle, in which the twin-engined bombers were launched from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet. The P-51 is an award-winner for restoration while a P-40 Warhawk fighter — best known for being part of the Flying Tigers in China — is new to the tour. “This is a rare opportunity to visit, explore and learn more about these unique and rare treasures of aviation history,” says Hunter Chaney of the Collings Foundation. Visitors can inspect and touch the aircraft — it’s $15 for adults and $5 for children under 12 for access to up-close viewing and tours through the

inside of the aircraft. Visitors may also actually take 30-minute flights aboard the rare aircraft — although the rates are steep. Flights on either the B-17 or B-24 are $450 per person. B-25 flights are $400 per person. Meanwhile, to literally get some “stick time” in two of the world’s most recognizable WWII fighters, P-40 Warhawk flight training is $2,200 for a half hour and $3,200 for a full hour. P-51 flight training is $2,400 for a half hour and $3,400 for a full hour. For reservations and information on flight experiences, call (800) 568-8924. planes will be on display until they depart after noon on Aug. 15. The tour travels the nation “as a flying tribute to the flight crews who flew them, the ground crews who maintained them, the workers who built them, the soldiers, sailors and airmen they helped protect; and the citizens and families that share the freedom that they helped preserve.” After the war, many aircraft were scrapped for their raw aluminum to rebuild a nation in post-war prosperity and very few were spared. “The rarity of the B-17, B-25, B-24, P-40 and P-51 and their importance to telling the story of WWII is why the Collings Foundation continues to fly and display the aircraft nationwide,” Chaney says.

County museum to host quilt expert quilt-making. Linda has presented programs regarding quilt appraising and quilting techniques for the Lockport cable television station as a guest of the Kenan Quilter’s Guild. She was a finalist in The Professional Quilter magazine Teacher of the Year contest. Her quilt, “Windows of Western New York, Western NY Responds to 9-11-2001,” has traveled throughout New York state and beyond. Powerwashing, also known as pressure-washing, utilizes a high-velocity water spray to remove dirt and residue from the exterior surfaces of a home. It is frequently used on vinyl siding, concrete and sometimes wood decks to treat mildew and other growth that accumulates over time. Powerwashing can be a great way to remove grime without having to scrub by hand. But it requires a delicate touch to get it right. Sometimes it is best to leave the job to professionals. But homeowners willing to give it a go can try powerwashing themselves, as various stores rent power washers. The home improvement website ImproveNet says that, until very recently, pressure washers were almost exclusively commercial machines sold to professionals or rented to do-it-yourselfers. Lately manufacturers have targeted homeowners looking to buy with lightweight options. For those who see powerwashing as a routine venture, purchasing a unit may be worth the investment. It is important to exercise caution when operating a powerwashing machine. The high-velocity spray can tear through skin. Parents imploring their children to eat their fruits and vegetables is a nightly occurrence at many dinner tables. Reluctant youngsters may have a seemingly innate resistance to vegetables, but parents should stay the course, as the importance of making fruit and vegetables a routine part of one’s daily diet is hard to overstate. Children might be seen as the most resistant to fruits and

Entertaining comes easy when the weather is pleasant. Many people welcome the chance to host in warm weather, and with hosting comes the need to provide tasty foods and refreshing beverages. While grilling is often the method of choice when hosting warm weather gatherings, following up tasty grilled fare with an equally pleasing homemade dessert can set any soiree apart. “Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp” from “CrockPot: 365 Year-Round Recipes” (Publications International, Ltd.) from CrockPot test kitchens creates a cobbler-esque dessert chock-full of comforting flavors. It can be enjoyed on its own, or topped with a dollop of cream or ice

Cut in butter using a pastry cutter or two knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in almonds. Remove the lid from the Crock-Pot slow cooker and gently sprinkle topping onto fruit. Transfer the stoneware to the oven. Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until tipping begins to brown.
