What’s happening at the Cattaraugus Free Library.
CATTARAUGUS — Beat the heat at the Cattaraugus Free Library. It is an NYS cooling center. Feel free to stop in during the hot summer days. the air conditioning feels great! The month of August is a busy one for the library. The ChautauquaCattaraugus Library System (CCLS) will have a display at the Cattaraugus County Fair in the Corporate Building during fair week. Representatives from the Cattaraugus Free Library will be manning the display on various days. Stop in and see how the CCLS works. The Knitting and Embroidery class will resume on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 1 p.m. All levels of knitters are invited to join. This is a weekly event held every Tuesday and lasts roughly one hour. The Cattaraugus Free Library will be participating in the Cattaraugus Community Days on Aug. 9 and 10 when story walk will take place. A story walk is a children's story in which participants can read large picture boards as they walk on a designated path outdoors. We will also have a float in the parade and will be co-sponsoring the outdoor movie on Friday, Aug. 9.
Finally, the library will have a booth at the Firemen's Park on Saturday, Aug. 10 to disperse books and children's prizes. All events are free and we encourage the community to participate. We will be celebrating Winnie the Pooh's birthday on Aug. 21 at 11 a.m. Activities include games, Winnie the Pooh stories and sharing ideas of how to be kind to others. This free event will be geared toward children under 10. Just in time for back to school, on Friday, Aug. 30 at 10 a.m, local author Lisa Musall will join us at the library to read one of her new books. We will discuss ideas on how to stay focused during school. We may even learn a few dance moves! This is a fun event open to all ages. On Monday, Aug. 26 from 2-4 p.m., Lori will be handing out Identity Theft brochures filled with helpful tips to avoid identity theft and what to do if you are a victim. Again this event is free to the public. Remember the Cattaraugus Free Library is closed on Saturdays during the months of July and August.

Free grounds entertainment daily at the fair
LITTLE VALLEY — Between the farm animals on display, the fried treats and amusement rides and the nightly grandstand shows, there is still plenty of live entertainment to check out at the 177th Cattaraugus County Fair. Each spectacular attraction has multiple shows daily and is free with gate admission. Back again for 2019 are the Swifty Swine Pig Races. If you've never been to a pig race, you're in for a real treat. Swifty and his friends don't do it for the money, what they really want is that Oreo cookie waiting on a silver platter at the finish line. They run as fast as their little legs can take 'em, and then it's back to nap time to be ready for the next race! Swifty Swine travels all over the
United States, bringing this unique form of family entertainment to their fans. So get there early to get a good seat! If you’re in the mood for some big cat action, returning this year is Blaszak’s Bengal Tiger Show. Brunon Blaszak is a third-generation tiger trainer and has been performing with Sumatran, Siberian and Bengal Tigers his entire life. Lisa’s horses have waltzed their way into Japan and danced in the Main Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. What better way to maximize the summer season than by incorporating summer berries into the salad mix? In this recipe for “Blueberry Spinach Salad with Grilled Chicken” from “Cooking Light: Fresh Food Superfast” (Oxmoor House) from the Editors of Cooking Light, iron, folate, vitamins, and rich antioxidants combine to create a light, tasty meal that’s perfect for summer evenings. Blueberry Spinach Salad with Grilled Chicken Makes 4 servings
When the warm weather beckons, people are apt to spend more time enjoying the great outdoors. Many people also are less likely to prepare heavy
3 6-ounce skinless, boneless chicken breast halves Cooking spray 1 6-ounce package fresh baby spinach 1 cup crumbled goat cheese 1 cup blueberries, optional Blueberry-Thyme Dressing (see below)
Prepare Blueberry Thyme Dressing. Place chicken breasts in a medium bowl. Add 1⁄3 cup dressing, toss to coat. Heat a nonstick grill pan over medium-high heat. Coat pan with cooking spray. Add chicken mixture to pan; cook 5 minutes on each side, or until desired degree of doneness. Let chicken stand 3 minutes before cutting crosswise into 1⁄2-inch slices. Cover and keep warm. While chicken cooks, place 11⁄2 cups spinach on each of four plates. Top salads evenly with chicken slices; sprinkle evenly with goat cheese and, if desired, blueberries. In a large bowl, combine the first eight ingredients. Crumble turkey over mixture and mix well. Shape into six patties. Gender equality in the professional arena has come a long way in the 21st century. But while great strides have been made over the last two decades, women still face challenges unique to females as they look to establish themselves professionally and advance their careers. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women still earn roughly 80 percent of what men are paid in the same positions. Professional women often must walk the thin line between being too nice or too aggressive, a pressure not often faced by men. Assertiveness is an art for both genders, and women can take steps to be more assertive without giving the impression they’re ruffling feathers. • Be confident in your speech. It is easy to fall into “weaker language” habits when advocating for an idea. If unsure about the reaction to a proposal, you might say, “I think this is a good idea” or “I believe this will impart change.” More assertive language is to simply stand behind the point: “This is a good idea.” Confidence can go a long way. • Allow people to disagree. It is acceptable for others to disagree with you. This can lead to discussion and an opportunity to present evidence why something should be done in a certain way. It

also enables you to point out the strong points in their argument. Listening to all ideas can sway people in your favor, even if they don’t necessarily agree with all you believe in. • Be proactive and future-oriented. This is expecially pertinent when asking for raises or promotions. Explain to a boss how you respect yourself and that your work merits the right compensation. Point out clearly defined future goals and successes you’ve had that warrant consideration for higher pay. • Don’t fear conflict. Conflict doesn’t have to be confrontational, especially when respectable language is used and everyone is allowed to voice their opinions. Conflict can inspire great change. And remember, while you need to have solid relationships with coworkers, they do not have to be your best friends. Board members and their immediate family (or persons residing in the same household) shall be prohibited from conducting with or profiting from the activities of any of the Enterprises, whether directly or indirectly. This prohibition may not be waived. Board members shall be considered “Public officials” for purposes of the Nation’s Ethics Law. Additionally, the following persons are not eligible to serve as Board members (a) employees of the Nation’s Enterprises; (b) owners or employees of contractors who conduct business with the Enterprises; (c) owners or employees of a business in direct competition with the Enterprises; (d) persons directly related to persons listed in (a),(b) or (c). For purposes of this Charter “immediate family” and “persons directly related” means being related to a person in the following ways: (i) husband/wife (including unmarried cohabitating relationships), (ii) mother\father (iii) child (natural or adopted (iv) brother/sister (v) aunt/uncle (vi) niece/nephew or (vii) grandparent/ grandchild.

Cattaraugus County Fair to begin 177th year on July 29

LITTLE VALLEY — The 177th annual Cattaraugus County Fair, which kicks off July 29, will include a triple-double play. There will be two demolition derbies — Monday and Sunday nights; two concerts — Morgan Wallen on Wednesday and Josh Turner on Thursday; and two monster truck rallies and ATV exhibition racing — Friday and Saturday. Christina Charlesworth Golden, treasurer of the Cattaraugus County Agricultural Society, which owns the fairgrounds and runs the County Fair, said fairgoers will be able to order tickets online again this year — including $8 advance sale admission tickets — $4 off the gate admission, through July 28 at Etix.com. Admission includes amusement rides and grandstand Monday and Tuesday nights. All county fair tickets can be purchased online at www.etix.com/ticket/v/13340. Advance sale tickets are also available locally at Community Bank offices, Cattaraugus County Bank offices, the Cattaraugus County Federal Credit Union office in Little Valley, Seneca Nation Federal Credit Union in Salamanca and the county fair office in Little Valley. Golden said magician and hypnotist Lance Gifford will make his first appearance at the fair this year.
Other free grounds entertainment shows include Swifty Swine Racing Pigs, Blaszak Tiger Show, Commerford Petting Zoo, Olde Indian River Lumberjack Show and Horses, Horses, Horses. There’s plenty of fair food on the midway, in the infield, under the grandstand and at the 4-H Snack Shack and the new food pavilion at the horse ring. A rising country star, Wallen will perform at 8 p.m. on July 31. The opening act is Hardy. Seats are $35 for the track and $30 for bleachers. Multi-platinum country hitmaker Josh Turner takes the stage on Aug. 1, at 7:30 p.m. Track seats are going for $40, bleacher seats are $35 and grandstand, $35. Good track seats are still available for Turner, and fewer track seats are left for Wallen, Golden said. Some of the improvements at this year’s fair include: Blacktop in the 4-H Junior Dairy Barn. A new food stand pavilion by the horse ring. New exhibitor camping spots. Upgrades to grounds and grandstand speakers. Exhibitors will bring in their animals and other exhibits on Sunday. On Monday morning, soon after the first roosters crow, while the first cows are milked and other animals are being washed, all eyes will be on the horse ring for the Western Horse Show beginning at 9 a.m. There are all-day shows at the horse ring each day.
The Poultry Show also begins Monday at 9 a.m., followed by the Goat Show at 10:30 a.m. The Miniature Horse Show is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Participants in the July 29 Demolition Derby will start lining up to get into the fairgrounds early in the afternoon. Monday’s Demolition Derby starts at 7:30 p.m. Sunday’s Championship Demolition Derby starts at 5 p.m. It’s not too late to enter. Call the fair office at 938-9146 for details. Tuesday’s grandstand entertainment features the Western New York Pro Stock Tractor Pull at 7:30 p.m. On Friday night at 7:30 and Saturday at 1:30 p.m., the Monster Mash Truck Rally roars in front of the grandstand. Also, exhibition ATV racing will be held in front of the grandstand both days. Grandstand ticket holders will be able to attend a Monster Mash Truck Pit Party prior to the shows where they can see the Monster Trucks up close, meet the drivers and get autographs. There will also be two mini-monster trucks at the fairgrounds. Golden said a second Monster Truck show was added on Saturdays a few years ago because the Friday night show sold out. If they get sick, they get vet care.” According to Blaszak, his tigers are under a health program by the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and is supervised by the United States Department of Agriculture and the Department of the Interior. Each animal is housed in its own cage, and they travel in a wellinsulated, well-ventilated semi-trailer that is equipped with air/ride. As a third-generation tiger trainer, Blaszak said the act has been in his family for quite some time and he learned how to train and show tigers from his parents and grandparents. He and his mother, Ada SmieyaBlaszak, are fully

Making heads and tails of the Cattaraugus County Fair

There is always a certain feeling in the air the morning of the show—a mixture of excitement, nervousness and the unmistakable smell of pure animal. It has been this way since the creation of the Cattaraugus County Fair almost 177 years ago and will be this way until the end of time. As animal-owners of all ages ready their prized charges for the day’s competition, the bleariness of a 6 a.m. wake-up time is quickly forgotten as manes are braided and hides hosed down. With flora and fauna of all shapes, sizes and species being presented before esteemed judges, the Fair is a tremendous amount of work at every step. Horses, one of the biggest animals shown at the event, require a special amount of care and expertise. Erin Washburn, a recent graduate of Cattaraugus-Little Valley and lifelong equestrian, has come to know the procedure by heart.

For her, the whole process of readying her ride, waiting and competing can take anywhere from 12 to 20 hours. For many riders, showing at the fair is a several-day commitment, but it is, truly, a labor of love. “I started riding as a young child and started showing as soon as possible,” Washburn said. “My horse has been with me through thick and thin, and in all
honesty, I love him more than I care for most people. He is my best friend, and I cannot imagine my life without him in it.” Washburn said she loves horses because they are honest, proud, graceful, kind and humble, but they’re also not afraid to sneeze on you and trip over their own feet. “I think a lot of kids see that and it helps bring them back to reality a little bit,” she added. Despite Washburn’s deep bond with her horse, the stress of showing, especially in the equine department, is sometimes too much to bear. “We strive to achieve perfection,” she said, simply. “Every drop of sweat, every tear, every ache and pain, every late night and

early morning are all in the pursuit of perfection. We have this picture in our minds of what perfect equitation looks like — how big a certain breed’s stride should be, where they should hold their heads, the length of our reins, the sparkle on our saddles and the muscle tone in their rumps.” When showing, Washburn said they spend every moment of their time trying to get as close as possible to perfection, and when they step into that arena, it is a game of finding out who is the least wrong. “We are looking to complete strangers for affirmation of our abilities as riders, and it’s very easy to get lost in that, especially as a young person competing,” she said. 1974 W. Showing presents a whole new set of challenges when a year’s worth of hard work culminates in having to say goodbye. Brooke Eddy, an Ellicottville Central School senior, will be taking Donald (a goat) and Comet (a pig) to the fair. Both market animals, they will be shown during the week and auctioned off to the highest bidder after judging. “These animals will normally be bought for consumption, which is the cause for lots of tears Sunday morning,” Eddy said. “Other exhibitors will be taking their dairy cows, dairy goats, bunnies and even breeding hogs, which they will show and then bring back home.” For both women, the Cattaraugus County 4-H has played a role in getting them to where they are today. “4-H does wonders for kids,” Eddy said. “Over the past five years that I have been involved, I have gained responsibility, respect and lots of other skills that not only help me with my animals but help everywhere. I truly wouldn’t be the person I am without it.” “It’s no secret horses are expensive,” adds Wash-
burn, “but 4-H takes away some of that cost, and in doing so, allows kids to experiment with their chosen discipline. “Without 4-H, I don’t believe I ever would’ve branched out,” she continued. “Now, I go to many different show circuits and I can always find someone who rides 4-H, had a sibling in it or recognizes my face from pictures shared on our social media.” Washburn said a lot of the 4-H-ers she idolized as a child are now doing great things with their lives, and she’s heard from a few parents that she became the figure their kids are looking up to. “It really gave me a good feeling to know that those kids are part of the community we shaped as my generation grew up,” she said. From July 29 to Aug. 4, Eddy, Washburn and dozens of other 4-H-ers, past and present, will be showing months of hard work and determination in front of people just as passionate as they are. It isn’t hard to see why this rural tradition has lasted over 150 years and is sure to continue for years to come. SALAMANCA -

Morgan Wallen, HARDY to perform for fairgoers July 31
LITTLE VALLEY — Rising country hit-maker Morgan Wallen will provide a night of entertainment with special guest HARDY July 31 during the 177th Cattaraugus County Fair. Between Platinum-certified No. 1 summer smash “Up Down,” featuring Florida Georgia Line, and his highly anticipated follow-up single, “Whiskey Glasses,” burning up the charts, Wallen has burst onto the scene as a dynamite solo artist and
in-demand songwriter. Wallen’s debut album “If I Know Me,” premiered in April of 2018 and was soon after named one of Taste of Country’s Top 10 Country Albums of 2018, So Far. With over 400 million combined digital streams to his credit, he was spotlighted in CMT’s Listen Up “18 for 2018” class of newcomers, named a 2018 Taste of Country RISER and earned opening spots touring with the likes of Luke Bryan, Florida Geor-

Michael Hardy, known professionally as HARDY, is a country music singer and songwriter who has

Born in Philadelphia, Miss., he attended Middle Tennessee State University, where he got a degree in songwriting. After moving to Nashville to pursue songwriting, HARDY became a writing partner of the duo Florida Georgia Line. Among his songwriting credits are "Up Down" by
Wallen, after the release of which he was signed to Big Loud Records in 2018. In October 2018, HARDY released an EP titled “This Ole Boy,” which he supported by joining Wallen's If I Know Me Tour.
