Bolivar grad earns doctorate, accepts challenges
When Shanon Harmon gave his salutatorian speech as a 2004 graduate of Bolivar-Richburg, he left his class with the goal to explore the world outside of their hometown — but to come back and visit. Shanon has done just that. Having earned his doctorate in business psychology at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Los Angeles this past spring, with academic honors (4.0 GPA) he has followed up on his Bolivar upbringing and youth that included earning Eagle Scout distinction. The son of Randy and Lorraine Harmon and brother of Sheldon, Shanon has two master’s degrees — one in industrial and organizational psychology and another in clinical psychology from Edinboro (Pa.) University. Shanon started his college education at Elmira College on the salutatorian award and completed a bachelor’s degree in both biology and psychology. He has received first-place recognition in this year’s
Southern California Virtual Graduate Research Forum and his dissertation will be featured in the National Graduate Research Forum. Shanon is a senior advisor in the Business Readiness Department at Southern CaliforniaEdison, where he leads organizational business readiness activities for transformation initiatives ensuring all people-related change activities are coordinated and executed properly. He also develops and executes organizational change management plans, business process implementation, technology deployment, communication and training. In addition, he is an adjunct assistant professor at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, where he educates students in the doctoral business psychology and organizational leadership programs and the master’s in industrial and organizational psychology programs. In February, Shanon received the Jack K. Horton Humanitarian Award, which honors employees

Head Start in Allegany County plans reopening, expanded services
WELLSVILLE — The Head Start program in Allegany County is tentatively reopening its Early Head Start centers for infants and toddlers on Aug. 3. Home-based services will also resume that day. Head Start is tentatively planning to have its center doors open for students on Sept. 1. “While things will look different when children return to the classrooms as we take extra precautions to keep the children safe from COVID-19, they will continue to be in a loving, nurturing
environment while in our care,” a Head Start press release stated. Additional news for the 2020-21 program year: • Early Head Start classes are expanding services to toddlers in Friendship by opening a new toddler classroom. • Program hours have been expanded to Head Start students in Cuba and Bolivar to five days a week. • Enrollment is open program-wide for children ages birth to 5. Alfred State removes SAT/ ACT requirements for coming years ALFRED — Alfred State College will not require an SAT or ACT score from prospective students applying for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years. This decision comes after the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees announced it is suspending the testing requirements at its colleges and universities for prospective students. While SUNY’s temporary waiver only applies for the spring 2021, fall 2021, and spring 2022 semesters, Alfred State is waiving standardized testing requirements beginning this fall and continuing through the spring of 2022. Alfred State Vice President for Enrollment Management Betsy Penrose said, “With limited testing options available in 2020, Alfred State is pleased to join SUNY in waiving the standardized testing requirements through spring 2022. We understand that, due to the pandemic, many students were unable to take the SAT and ACT exams. Alfred State conducts a holistic review of applicants and considers many variables, not just
test scores, upon admission. Now, students may be admitted to bachelor’s degrees without those standardized scores and admission will lean more heavily on other factors such as high school grades and co-curricular involvement.” Traditionally, standardized test scores were not required for admission into associate degree programs at Alfred State, meaning the waiver will impact students applying for bachelor’s degree programs. “We are fortunate to have a myriad of educational opportunities for students at the associate and bachelor’s degree levels,” Penrose
said. “Associate degree students have never been required to submit standardized test scores and these students perform well at Alfred State. Now, our bachelor’s degree applicants will have the opportunity to be considered without SAT or ACT scores.” Alfred State will continue to evaluate each application individually using a holistic review to make the best decision for both the applicant and the college. A variety of factors are considered, such as individual program requirements, letters of recommendation, strength of academic program and extracurricular activities.

Looking back at Whitesville’s 2004 basketball state championship
The 2003-04 New York State Class D runner-up Whitesville boys basketball team. Pictured are, back row (from left): Coach Doug VanSkiver, Rory O’Hagan, Drew Heisey, Zach Coleman, Dan Billings and Tim Meunier. Front row: Lance Brubaker, Jesse Lewis, Tommy Latterell, Tom Bissett, James Waters and Matt Burns. (Editor’s note: This is part of a series in which the Olean Times Herald and Bradford Era are presenting the best season/team accomplishment for schools in the Big 30 region.)
By JEFF UVEINO WHITESVILLE — From the sticks to the states. In 2004, dozens of vehicles in Whitesville sported bumper stickers reading that phrase. The decal became a slogan for the school’s boys basketball team that year, which after a nearly perfect regular season, made a run at the New York State Class D championship. The Blue Jays finished the year with a 25-2 record, their only regular season loss coming midseason at the hands of Allegany County rival Genesee Valley. After the setback, Doug VanSkiver’s team didn’t lose again until the state championship game. “That loss kind of shocked us,” said VanSkiver, who was named the Big 30 Coach of the Year that season and was a co-winner in 2007. “We stayed pretty focused after that.” After winning the Section 5 Class D crown, Whitesville met Class DD champion GV again in a state qualifier contest that VanSkiver called one of his all-time favorite games. “Alfred University was packed to the rafters,” VanSkiver said. “I had never seen it so full. You couldn’t hear.” The Blue Jays pulled out
a 46-45 win, which gave them a date with Section 6 champion Pine Valley in the Far West Regional. After trailing by double digits at halftime, Whitesville played a “near perfect” second half, according to VanSkiver, shooting 85% from the field to cruise past PV and into the state final four in Glens Falls. “We were kind of the darlings of the tournament,” VanSkiver said. “People were surprised when they found out how little our school was and the size of our town. The people (at states) were good to us.” THE BLUE Jays battled Section 3 champion Poland in the state semifinals, pulling out an overtime victory after some late-game heroics by Lance Brubaker. Leading by one point with five seconds to play, Brubaker stole a Poland inbound pass, was fouled and made both free throws to seal a 61-58 win for Whitesville. The Blue Jays’ luck would run out in the state title game, however, as they fell to Section 1’s Alexander Hamilton, 50-44. “To get there was pretty impressive, but it was pretty hard to lose that ballgame,” VanSkiver said. “They were just a racehorse team, but we slowed the game down. We had a couple bad breaks go against us and we couldn’t recover.” If VanSkiver could describe that Blue Jays team with one word, “deep” would be fitting.
Whitesville featured an arsenal of quality offensive and defensive players both in the starting lineup and off the bench. Zach Coleman and Drew Heisey, two of the team’s leaders, were each named to the NYS Class D All-Tournament Team. The team’s year-round dedication, VanSkiver said, was one of the driving forces behind its success. “We played basketball all the time,” he said. “We went to team camps and got into any league that we could. Those kids did anything that they could to get better and get a leg up on their opponents.” The result was a season and playoff run that the athletes, school and community rallied around. “It’s a tradition here in Whitesville that when a team wins a sectional championship, the firetrucks intercept them a couple miles from town and give them a parade,” said VanSkiver, who retired for good after the 2017-18 season after a decorated 26-year coaching career. “When we got back from states, I knew it was serious because the town was blocked off and the fire trucks were two wide on the road.” These Blue Jays were one of four sectional champion teams coached by VanSkiver. The 2004 team, however, made the deepest playoff run in the program’s history, and is remembered in the community as the group that went from the sticks to the states.

Any time is a great time to get in shape. People with more time on their hands due to stay-at-home restrictions may want to begin an exercise regimen right away. When proper form is followed, exercise can be highly effective. However, failing to exercise properly can result in injuries that sidetrack fitness plans. Exercise is a significant component of a healthy lifestyle. The U.S. Surgeon General, the Institute of Medicine, the Ameri-
can Heart Association, and the American College of Sports Medicine all say that daily physical activity is necessary, but recommendations from these groups vary in regard to how much exercise is best. Harvard Medical School says most people should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise or 15 minutes of intense exercise a day. As important as duration of exercise can be, proper form is a must. The following are some ways to avoid injury while
exercising. • Consult with your doctor. Speak with a doctor before beginning an exercise regimen, especially if it has been some time since you last exercised. A physician will tell you if there are certain workouts or activities you should avoid, or give you a green light. Discuss exercise each time you get a physical. • Consider a personal trainer. A cold concoction perfect for summer nights Summer is synonymous with many things. Vacations, warm weather and al fresco dining are part and parcel of many people’s summertime routines. Another beloved routine is enjoying a cold beverage on a warm summer evening. As summer breezes invite scores of people outside to relax on their patios, decks or balconies, a cold beverage can be just what’s needed to take such relaxing nights one step further. The following recipe for “Summer Cantaloupe” from Andrew Schloss’ “Homemade Liqueurs and Infused Spirits” (Storey Publishing) is easily whipped up and can go a long way toward making summer evenings especially sweet.

Home inspections 101
The process of buying a home can be unlike any experience prospective buyers have ever had. After finding a home they like and coming to an agreement on a sale price with the seller, buyers can expect to add many items to their to-do list. One of the first things to jot down on that list is scheduling a home inspection. Home inspections are a vital part of the home buying process. Such inspections can protect buyers as they’re on the cusp of making what will likely be the most significant investment of their lives. Understanding the home inspection process can help buyers during an exciting yet potentially nerve-wracking time in their lives. What is a home inspection? The American Society of Home Inspectors defines a home inspection as an objective visual examination of the physical structure and systems of a house. Inspectors will conduct
visual examinations from the roof to the foundation of the home. Additional structures on the property, such as sheds or detached outdoor living areas, are not typically included in the examination. What do inspectors examine? The ASHI notes that inspectors will examine the condition of various parts of the home. The heating system, central air conditioning unit, interior plumbing and electrical systems, roof (though inspectors will not climb onto the roof), attic and insulation will be examined. Inspectors also will examine walls, ceilings, floors, windows, doors, the foundation of the home, basement (or crawl space), and structural components. Can a home fail inspection? Homes cannot fail home inspections, which are just assessments of a home’s existing condition. Municipal inspections are separate inspections conducted by
government agencies to verify that a property is in compliance with local codes. Home inspectors will provide detailed reports describing the condition of a home and indicate if any repairs are in order. Do I really need a home inspection? A home inspection is a vital component that can help buyers make the most informed decision possible. Forgoing an inspection can leave buyers vulnerable to potentially costly repairs and issues with a home that might have been detected with a proper home inspection. In addition, some lenders insist that buyers have home inspections conducted before they will allow them to borrow money. Home inspections can protect home buyers as they prepare to make the most significant financial investment of their lives. More information about inspections can be found at www.homeinspector.org.
Key to keeping cool is AC maintenance
Few things beat summer heat better than walking into a comfortably chilled air conditioned home. Air conditioning is often taken for granted, but sorely missed when it is not working. The key to keeping cool all summer long is to ensure that air conditioning systems are functioning properly. Maintaining an AC unit can save money and protect homeowners’ investments. Without regular attention, an AC unit will lose its efficiency, needlessly wasting both energy and money as a result. Poor maintenance also can lead to system failure just when it is needed most. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the average lifespan of an air conditioning unit is about 15 to 20 years. Home Advisor says homeowners can pay between $500 and $4,000 for central air conditioning, with the final cost depending on the unit, additional installation items, such as ductwork, and installation charges. With regular maintenance, homeowners can keep their units humming properly and avoid premature re-
placement costs. So what can homeowners expect as it pertains to air conditioner maintenance? The following are some oftneeded checks and fixes. • Keep it clean. Vacuum the fins and coils of the AC unit on the external compressor/condenser fan with a soft-bristled brush, advise the experts at Family Handyman. This may require unscrewing the metal box surrounding the unit to access the fins. Remove any accumulated debris that may be impeding air flow. Afterward, go inside and change the filter that is installed with the evaporator that’s located in a central duct near the furnace. Inspect the filter periodically to see if it is soiled and needs replacement. Timing can vary depending various factors, such as the time of year, the accumulation of dust and whether or not pets live in the home. • Straighten coil fins. The fins on the condenser are easily bent and that can affect the flow of air through the coils. If you cannot easily straighten them, then consult with an HVAC
professional to do so. • Check the thermostat. Ensure that the thermostat is still working properly. You also may want to upgrade an old thermostat to a programmable or smart thermostat that enables you to remotely set and adjust the temperature. • Consider an in-line duct booster. HVAC professionals can guide you through the advantages of an in-line duct booster for forced-air cooling. This can increase the flow of cool air into a room that always seems hotter than the rest. Another option is a vent or register booster fan that sits on top or replaces a traditional floor or wall register. • Deal with condensation. Condensation from air conditioning coils can puddle around the furnace if the condensate drain tube is clogged. Clearing it out will help prevent puddling and the formation of bacteria-laden water in the system. Periodic maintenance is necessary to ensure uninterrupted service on a home AC unit.

ents itself, the sun and the fresh air can induce a deep sense of relaxation. Lying on a hammock or floating in a hanging chair provides that additional soothing rocking motion that can make a cat nap even more enticing. Use it indoors or outdoors Create a retreat in any corner of your yard or home. A hanging chair can be hung in the corner of a bedroom to provide a spot to curl up with a good book or rock a baby to sleep. The same chair can be brought to a covered deck or patio so people can swing with the breeze when the weather allows. Super stargazing retreat Hammocks and swinging chairs can make it easier and more comfortable to stargaze at night.
With a double hammock or chair, bring a romantic partner along to snuggle and watch the cosmos. Or teach children about the constellations in the night sky. Be inconspicuous among nature Lying on the ground disturbs the lawn and other outdoor components. Being suspended several inches above the ground in a chair or a hammock can help a person blend in with the natural environment. Birds, small animals and insects may not even know you’re there, and that can make them easier to observe. Everyone can appreciate the opportunity to sit back and relax. Hammocks and swinging chairs can help a person feel lighter than air and recharge in the warm summer air.

Auto Club Address windshield damage promptly Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion. Windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem. Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds,
debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield. Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your

Managing credit when buying a car
car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly. Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a doit-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.
Many people in the market for new vehicles intend to lease or finance a car once they find the make and model they want. Such an approach will necessitate a credit check. Credit checks make some consumers, even those who have relatively good credit, uncomfortable. But when managed well, credit and checks on individuals’ credit ratings can go smoothly and save drivers considerable amounts of money over the life of their leases and auto loans. • Don’t leave room for surprises. Even consumers who feel they have firm grasps on their credit scores should check their scores before they go shopping for leases or auto loans. Reports may contain errors that can affect the interest rates lenders are willing to give lessees or borrowers. Fixing mistakes in advance of shopping for a car ensures drivers they will get the best interest rate and loan terms possible for someone in their financial standing. • Clean up a score if it falls short of expecta-

tions. Buyers who don’t know their credit scores may be disappointed if those scores come back lower than they expected. Numerous factors, be it missed payments or high debt-to-credit ratios, can lower credit scores. Even buyers with good jobs and money in the bank may not have good credit scores. When possible, buyers with low credit scores should wait until they can improve their scores before shopping for a lease or loan. The higher buyers’ credit scores, the lower their interest rate will likely be, saving them considerable amounts of money over the life of their lease or loan. • Wait before having your credit run. Some auto dealers may want to run prospective buyers’ credit histories the moment those buyers step onto their lots, but
it pays for consumers to be patient and wait until they have found a vehicle they like before agreeing to a credit check. Each time a person applies for credit, his or her credit score dips. But according to Bankrate.com, applicants who file all of their loan applications within one two-week period will only have those applications count as a single credit inquiry. • Don’t overdo it. Buyers with great credit scores may be tempted to stretch their automotive budgets. But drivers who spend more they can afford may soon find that their excellent credit ratings are suffering. Stay on budget so payments can be made on time and credit scores stay strong. Buying or leasing a new vehicle can be made easier when buyers enter the process with strong credit scores.
