wedge of soil from their gardens to determine its moisture levels. If the top six inches of the soil is dry, water. If that area is still wet or moist, the plants have enough moisture to withstand the heat. Check these moisture levels more frequently during heat waves than other times of year. • Avoid overwatering. Novice gardeners may be tempted to water more frequently when they see wilted leaves on their flowers. But wilted leaves are not necessarily indicative of suffering plants. Plants

release moisture to protect themselves from excessive heat, and that release of moisture can cause leaves to wilt as the plants try to protect themselves by providing less surface area that can be exposed to the sun. So long as soil moisture levels are healthy, the flowers should be fine, even if their leaves have wilted. No gardener wants to see their flowers succumb to the summer heat. Fortunately, there are many ways to help flowers survive heat waves.

breakfasts and desserts, they’re equally at home in more savory dishes. Fruit often pairs well with mild-flavored meats like poultry and pork. For a refreshing dinner that’s easy to prepare and cooks up in just about 30 minutes, try “Roasted Pork Chops and Peaches” from “Real Simple: Dinner Tonight Done!” (Time Home Entertainment) from the editors of Real Simple. Roasted Pork Chops and Peaches Serves 4

The tastes of summer are often amplified by fresh, regional produce. Peaches are a classic warm-weather fruit that provide just the right amount of sweetness to a variety of dishes. While it’s easy to pigeonhole peaches into

small red onion, cut into thin wedges tablespoons white wine vinegar cup fresh basil leaves

Heat the oven to 400 F. Cook the couscous according to the package directions. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Season the pork with 1⁄2 teaspoon salt and 1⁄4 teaspoon pepper and cook until browned, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate. Add the peaches, onion, vinegar, and 1⁄4 teaspoon each salt and pepper to the skillet, and cook, tossing, for 1 minute. Return the pork and any accumulated juices to the skillet. Transfer the skillet to the oven and roast until the pork is cooked through and the peaches are tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Serve with the couscous and sprinkle with the basil.

Why homeowners should add more exterior light to their properties the amount of time one can use outdoor spaces and make them the perfect gathering spot. As autumn arrives, days become shorter. However, patios, porches and more can get extended use with lighting. • Safeguard security: A well-lit home may be less likely to be targeted by burglars than one swathed in darkness and shadows. Lights can remain on all evening or be motion-triggered. Setting lights on timers also ensures that the home is illuminated

Homeowners are increasingly realizing the benefits of improving the exteriors of their home, which can be just as valuable as improving the interior spaces. As individuals design picturesque garden beds and cultivate lavish lawns or revamp exteriors with architectural features,

they probably want to spotlight these improvements. This is where exterior lighting can be put to great use. Exterior illumination can cast a glow on various features, but there are many other reasons to increase lighting around the exterior of a home. • Safety: Trips and falls can occur at

night when trying to traverse walkways and landscapes in the dark, as it can be difficult to see rocks, stairs and uneven pavement. Outdoor lighting can illuminate pathways, entryways and other areas for safer access for homeowners and their guests. • Extend outdoor entertaining: Ample lighting can increase

service, say that exterior lighting can add roughly 30 percent to the value of a home. They also indicate that 50 percent of all home buyers say that outdoor lighting is important when buying a home. If current residents are thinking about selling, now may be the time to invest in exterior lighting. Improving a home’s exterior may be as simple as adding more lighting to improve functionality and beauty.

Uplighting in trees, silhouetting techniques to showcase plants and spotlights to show off architectural features are all options for homeowners to consider. • Add value: The experts at Parker Homescape, a landscape design

It’s a nearly-scientific fact that you can solve most any problem by putting dirt on it. Scraped knee? Dirt. Embarrassing bald spot? Dirt. Nagging mother-in-law? Dirt. Lots of it. Juuust kidding. The point is, when people need a little more excitement in life, they probably just need to add a little dirt. And that’s where KIOTI tractors come in. Intuitively designed to dominate the dirt, these machines make it an easy decision for anyone also inclined to favor the filthy.
