Come to ‘Celebrate Salamanca’ this weekend
By Eli Phillips Contributing Writer to The Press SALAMANCA — The city of Salamanca and the Seneca Nation of Indians have come together again to host the third annual Celebrate Salamanca Day this Saturday, July 13. The showcase event, running along Main Street and East Race Street in the city, will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The celebration will feature an estimated 30 vendors
offering locally made goods, crafts, food and more. Mayor Michael “Smitty” Smith said he’s been impressed by the growth of the celebration in its first two years and hopes to see the same — if not more — in its third. “We do this every year to celebrate what this city is and what makes it truly unique: we’re the only city placed completely on a reservation,” Smith told the Press in a previous interview. He said Celebrate Salamanca is a way to

What’s happening at the Salamanca Public Library
SALAMANCA — The Salamanca Public Library’s Summer Reading Program starts July 8. Children who are interested in reading and winning prizes may sign up at the library to receive their reading logs. For every 15 minutes that you read, mark it down on your log, you can check-in once a week at the library to turn your minutes into points that can be redeemed for a variety of prizes. To go along with the reading program, the library will be offering activities for kids almost every day of the week. On Mondays at 4 p.m., stop by for STEAM Club. Story Time will be Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. Crafternoon will be Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and LEGO Club at 4 p.m. on Thursdays. Get ready to ‘Rock the Park’ at ASP July 19
SALAMANCA — Picture the scene: a beautiful summer evening near a lake, listening to great live music -and you are smack in the middle of it! It can all be yours to enjoy at Allegany State Park’s 8th annual Rock the Park! This year’s event takes place on July 19 at the Red House Beach area. The day kicks off at 3 p.m. with a local vendor showcase. Various merchants and organizations will be on hand to familiarize park patrons and local residents with the many great things that are available to them in the surrounding area. At 5 p.m., Park
Naturalists will host an “Ask the Naturalist” program that will feature several interactive nature displays including a nature-themed photo booth. At 6 p.m., a sandcastle building contest will take place, sign up at the “Ask the Naturalist” table. Also at 6 p.m., it’s time to “Rock the Park” with opening act and Allegany’s own Artist in Residence, Tyler Calkins. This 31-year-old singer-songwriter set out to create a sound reflecting the songwriting techniques of the sixties and seventies, while also utilizing modern and alternative rock.
In the years since, Tyler's unique rhythm guitar, piano, harmonica and vocals have made him one of the most sought-after performers in the Southern Tier. Having achieved his Master’s Degree in Music Performance from Pennsylvania State University as well as a Ph.D. in Music Education, Tyler's musical knowledge and songwriting are growing each day. Backed by his band, Marshmellow Overcoat, Tyler has five albums under his belt (in addition to solo and side projects), including MMOC's upcoming album for summer 2019, featuring the sin-
gles "Smoke Screen" and "We've Got to Roll." He will be followed at 7:30 p.m. by the headliner, Pressure Sensitive, which is an explosive band sometimes referred to as a rock and roll time machine due to the variety of songs they play. They take audiences on a wild ride that stops anywhere between 1960’s, and into the new millennium. Pressure Sensitive is a band that will keep you dancing and singing all night long. On the drums/vocals is Pressure Sensitive founder/creator Gary Welcome of Jamestown. On lead guitar/
vocals is Joe Spano of Jamestown. On bass guitar/vocals is Craig Terry of Lakewood. On the keyboard, guitar and lead vocals is Dave Ahlquist of Jamestown. Pressure Sensitive is decades of rock, and so much more. Come to see what we are all about! You won’t be sorry!

A ketogenic diet is low-carb and relies on fat to supply as much as 90 percent of a person’s daily calories. How does a ketogenic diet work? The ketogenic diet tries to force the body into using a different type of fuel known as ketone bodies, which are a type of fuel produced by the liver from fat stores. This differs from other diets, which rely on glucose from carbohydrates to fuel the body. Getting the liver to create ketone bodies and reach a state of ketosis, in which the body is breaking down protein and fat for energy, isn’t necessarily easy, as it requires people to consume fewer than 20 to 50 grams of carbs a day. To put that in perspective, the Harvard Medical School notes that a medium-sized banana typically contains 27 grams of carbohydrates. In addition, WebMD notes that reaching ketosis typically takes three to four days,

Is a ketogenic diet safe? The Harvard Medical School notes that a ketogenic diet is typically recommended to reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures in children. People considering a ketogenic diet to lose weight may end up disappointed and could even be putting their health in jeopardy. “While (the ketogenic diet) also has been tried for weight loss, only shortterm results have been studied, and the results have been mixed,” said registered dietitian Kathy McManus, director of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “We don’t know if it works in the long term, nor whether it’s safe.” Others may look to a ketogenic diet to combat heart disease, certain brain diseases and even acne. However, WebMD notes that there is not enough research to support the idea that a ketogenic diet can help with any of these conditions.
Ketogenic diets carry certain risks. The Harvard Medical School notes that such risks include nutrient deficiency, liver problems, kidney problems, and constipation. In addition, the sugar from carbohydrates aides brain function, so a low-carb diet like the ketogenic diet can have an adverse effect on the brain,
potentially contributing to confusion and mood swings. People considering ketogenic diets or other popular low-carb approaches to nutrition should consult with their physicians before making any changes to their existing diets.
