As Allegany County saw six new instances of COVID-19 infection in the past week, the governor added three states to the travel advisory requiring individuals who have traveled to New York from those states to quarantine for 14 days. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said earlier this week the newly-added states are Delaware, Kansas and Oklahoma. The quarantine applies to any person arriving from a state with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a seven-day rolling average or a state with a 10% or higher positivity rate over a seven-day rolling average. As of earlier this week, 989 isolations or quarantines have been reported by the county health department, with 61 remaining separated. Precautionary travel quarantines included 35 separations. The travel advisory requires all New Yorkers, as well as those visiting from out of state, to take personal responsibility for complying with the advisory in the best interest of public health and safety, authorities say. BELMONT — A drive-through grocery distribution, including dairy, produce and other perishables, will be offered at the Genesee Valley Central School, 1 Jaguar Drive, on July 13 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., or until the food is gone. Each family will receive three boxes of prepacked groceries, with the same items and the same amount. The food is being provided by Nourish NY and the federal Coronavirus Food Assistance Program. Repaving work on 417 from Wellsville to Andover WELLSVILLE — The New York State Department of Transportation advises motorists that lane closures are in place along Route 417 in the towns Wellsville and Andover for resurfacing work. Approximately 6 miles of pavement will be resurfaced along Route 417 beginning near Northern Lights in Wellsville and con-

tinuing to Dyke Road in Andover. Work is expected to take place weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. and last for approximately two weeks, weather permitting. During construction, two-way traffic will be maintained using alternating single-lane closures and on-site flagging personnel. Motorists may experience

delays during this time and are advised to seek alternate routes. No detours will be posted. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. OLEAN — Jamestown Community College held a signing day for recipients of the Workforce Readiness Scholarship at the Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses this past week. Cattaraugus County Campus recipients include Cristian Burnell of Belmont, Meghan Scholla of Bolivar and Reanna Plyler of Wellsville. During a virtual ceremony that featured comments on regional workforce and employer perspectives by Mark Geise, chief executive officer of the Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency, and Mary Deegan-Collins, production manager at SolEpoxy, Inc. in Olean, the students signed a letter of intent to accept the scholarship and enroll in Manufacturing Technology Institute programs at JCC, beginning this fall. The scholarship is available to qualified high school graduates and non-traditional students in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties in New York and Warren, Forest, Potter, McKean, Elk and Cameron counties and in Corry and North East in Pennsylvania. Plyler sees the scholarship as a way to develop skills she can put to use immediately after graduating from JCC. With plans to study CAD/CNC, she spent two years developing her interests through the pre-engineering program at Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES. “The scholarship is my stepping stone into determining my career choice and entering the workforce,” said Plyler, who hopes to work for

What to do when considering nicotine replacement therapy

Quitting smoking can be difficult, but it’s something millions of people have already done. That reality should provide hope to current smokers who recognize the potentially deadly nature of their habits and want to quit. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, nicotine replacement therapy, or NRT, is the most commonly used family of quit smoking medications. In an effort to reduce the urge to smoke, NRT gives patients small, controlled amounts of nicotine, but none of the other dangerous chemicals found in cigarettes. Examples of NRT products include nicotine patches, nicotine gum, nicotine lozenges, and nicotine nasal spray. While NRT has proven highly effective at helping many people overcome their urges to smoke, the Federal Drug Administration notes that it’s vital that smokers speak with their physicians prior to using an NRT product. While these products can be purchased over-thecounter, that does not mean they cannot pose a threat to certain people

who are smoking. Men and women considering NRT to quit smoking can heed the following advice, courtesy of the FDA. • Pregnant women should pause. Pregnant women understandably want to quit smoking the moment they learn they’re pregnant, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that women who smoke while pregnant are more likely to give birth too early. Babies born prematurely miss important growth that happens during the final weeks of pregnancy, and such children may be born with issues such as low birth weight, breathing and feeding difficulties, cerebral palsy, and problems with hearing or eyesight. Pregnant women who want to quit smoking should only begin NRT if their doctors approve. Quitting cold turkey might be difficult, but it could be the healthiest option for pregnant women and the children they’re carrying. • Consider your current health. The FDA also recommends people with various preexisting conditions speak with their doctors before beginning NRT. Such conditions

The presence of any of these symptoms, or any other irregularities NRT patients notice, should be brought to the attention of a physician immediately. NRT can help smokers quit, but it’s vital that people considering NRT discuss it with their physicians before beginning any treatments.

7 things to consider when buying a shed Backyard sheds can be useful assets. Sheds can create storage space in the garage, basement or other areas of the house that have become gathering spots for gear typically used outdoors.
