ACCORD produces video on COVID-19 biz reopening By BOB CLARK BELMONT — A helpful video created by a local nonprofit should help businesses get back on their feet as the region reopens from COVID-19 shutdowns. Ruby Lananger, business and loan manager with Belmont-based ACCORD Corp., working with Genesee Valley Media, prepared a video presentation on how to certify business compliance and safety plans. The 10-minute video outlines how to access planning documents via the NY Forward website, required and recommended best practices for various industries, how to create a safety plan, and how to affirm compliance with the state. THE ALLEGANY COUNTY Department of Health on Friday reported that COVID-19 cases rose to 57 over the past 72 hours, with two reported Sunday and two reported
Monday. Meanwhile, 51 patients have recovered. One death was reported in late March. As of earlier this week, 730 residents have been in quarantine or isolation, while 27 remain separated. On June 12, Allegany County officials issued a fourth state of emergency for COVID-19. County Board of Legislators Chairman Curt Crandall, R-Belfast, signed the order. The state of emergency, along with allowing for special actions, also allows for local residents, businesses, governments and nonprofits to access certain government grant and loan programs. The order also allows local municipalities to issue separate orders. Since the order was first issued in March, county officials have taken several steps under the order, such as allowing the county administrator to make purchases of COVID-19 supplies without prior approval from the board. However, the resolutions are limited to a maximum of 30 days, and must be renewed or allowed to expire — impacting aid opportunities. The first was issued March 14; the second on April 13; and the fourth on May 13.

Rachel, the daughter of Wade and Charlotte Marsh, has an overall GPA of 91.65. United Way, ACAF grants support Allegany County
BELMONT — With the coronavirus pandemic creating significant economic disruption in our area, the Allegany County Area Foundation and Allegany County United Way recently created Community Relief Funds (CRF). A shared grant application and review process has streamlined support for local organizations that are assisting county residents. To date, $17,000 has been awarded, with recipients including: • Cuba Cultural Center for the continuation of its Backpack Program providing weekend meals to 175 children from the CubaRushford, Friendship and Belfast school districts • Genesee Library for its activity kits for school-aged kids • Salvation Army in support of food programs • YMCA Wellsville for the Shepherding Program, which actively reaches out to residents countywide and helps to take care of needs
identified through this contact. Most recently, the CRF reviewed applications from two libraries seeking help with the unplanned expense of reopening in line with CDC guidelines. Realizing the importance of our local libraries and that these expenses would be experienced by all of them, the grant committee has decided to provide support to all 17 Allegany County libraries. The shared grant committee includes the directors and two board members from ACUW and ACAF. Once a grant is approved the organization directors determine the funding specifics. Each organization brought existing resources to this effort; these funds have been buoyed by generous community donations. “The shared grantmaking process has worked well,” said ACAF Executive Director Bruce Campbell. “It’s been great working
with our colleagues at the United Way to support the county in this time of unusual need. We are really grateful for the support we’ve received from individuals and businesses around Allegany County.” ‘We are thankful for the opportunity to collaborate with ACAF on this fund, and for the support we continue to receive from community members and businesses alike,” said ACUW Director Mandi Joyce-Phelps. “Coretta Scott King once said ‘The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members,’ and I think that rings true now, more than ever.” For more information and a link to the grant application, visit acafny.org. Choose a backyard lifeguard At least one person should be designated as backyard lifeguard when the pool is in use. This person should always direct his or her focus on the pool, counting swimmers and keeping track of who enters and leaves the pool. Safe Kids Worldwide suggests rotating water watchers every 15 minutes. Pools are fun places to spend summer afternoons, especially when every step is taken to ensure the safety of swimmers.

The benefits of organic foods Modern grocery stores are unlike the ones many of today’s adults encountered when they were children. Radiator coolant is another important fluid to check. Antifreeze protects the engine in cold temperatures, but it also helps the engine run cooler in hot temperatures. Wait for the RV to cool down before checking fluids. • Periodically run the generator. RV generators shouldn’t go unused for too long. Gasoline has a short shelf life, and after time it can break down, condense and damage the generator’s internal components. Run the generator if the RV has not been used for awhile. Be sure to change the oil and filter of the generator regularly as well. • Drain and clean water and waste systems. Water systems can benefit from being drained periodically and flushed with clean, fresh water. The disposal waste system needs to be drained as indicated in the owner’s manual. • Lubricate joints and slide-out rails. Avoid rust and corrosion by spraying moving parts with a lubricant spray. RVs can be a home away from home while vacationing or touring the country. With proper maintenance, they can run like new for years.
