Bradford Speedway opens season with capacity crowd By JOEL WHETZEL BRADFORD — The engines were revving, the fans were packed into their seats and, for one afternoon, life in McKean County felt normal again as Bradford Speedway kicked off its summer season. A capacity crowd was on hand June 7 as the local racetrack began its season with sunny weather and temperatures in the mid-70s. The line for tickets stretched well beyond the gates before racing had even started. Inside, spectators were shoulder-to-shoulder in the bleachers as fans kept arriving even after the action began. “It was a pretty good crowd,” said Bradford Speedway general manager Dennis Cummings, who is leasing the track this year. “We only had 106 cars, but this place was packed beyond capacity.” Cummings felt that the crowd size was partly due to the fervor that typically surrounds opening day as well as excitement by fans to get out and have something to watch and look forward to during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Everybody is sick of staying home, and we’re racing,” Cummings said. THE ANTICIPATION

Facebook posts by the speedway regarding opening day drew dozens of responses, with a number of fans expressing their excitement about being able to attend. One such attendee was Jamestown resident Jennifer Haskins, who made the trek from Chautauqua County with her 9-yearold son, Clint. Jr., and
7-year-old son, Hunter. The trio was on hand to watch a family friend take part in his first race, and Haskins said the family was happy to get out of the house to watch something live again. The tracks Haskins normally frequents — Stateline Speedway near Jamestown and Raceway 7 just outside of Erie, Pa., in northeast Ohio — are both still closed. She had positive impres-
sions of the speedway ahead of the races, and was looking forward to the action. “It’s a little track, so hopefully it’s very racey,” she said, adding, “The drive wasn’t bad. It’s a beautiful day.” The event began with hot laps at around 4:30 p.m. followed by heats — pure stocks, crate late models, pro mods, street stocks, mini stocks and a kids featured race — and
then a 10-minute intermission. The second half of the evening consisted of 20-lap features in the pure stocks, crate lates, pro mods, street stocks and mini stocks. Cummings says the track had a mixed day but that everybody was positive. “We had our ups and downs with the track, but all in all, everybody was into it having a good time,” Cummings said. Racing lasted well into

the evening, with events still taking place at 9:30. The schedule for the rest of summer will look fairly similar to Sunday. Races will be on weekends, most of which will take place on Sundays. There will likely not be an event on the weekend of July 4. Prices this year have slightly increased due to a loss of sponsors, with pit seating priced at $35, while grandstand tickets are $14 and kids 9-13 are $7. Children eight and under are free. The increase didn’t seem to deter fans, and with any luck, Cummings says, the crowds will keep coming back for more action. “Hopefully it’s like today; the more the merrier,” he said. Perhaps the best feeling for the Speedway and its crew, though, was the ability to draw the community together for the first time in a while. McKean County went into the green phase recently, allowing the track to host a bigger event than it would have been able to in the yellow. “It’s a great feeling,” Cummings said. “With all of the people out here, it’s awesome.” Full results from the evening will be published when they become available.

McKean County to distribute emergency food By FRAN De LANCEY SMETHPORT — The McKean County Commissioners approved a resolution Tuesday in which the county becomes the lead agency and local recipient agency responsible for the distribution of U.S. Department of Agriculture foods through The Emergency Food Assistance Program, TEFAP. According to this agreement, the county will be responsible for determining the eligibility of households to participate in TEFAP and distributing USDA foods only to those households in the designated service area and allowing the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to conduct reviews and monitor progress to determine compliance with
the program’s purposes. In a related item, the commissioners OK’d issuing a memorandum of understanding with six county food distribution locations to participate in the TEFAP and State Food Purchase Program, SFPP. They are the Bradford Salvation Army, Bradford YWCA and food pantries in Kane, Port Allegany and Smethport, as well as The Friendship Table in Bradford, which has been added this year to receive some funding. The county receives approximately $60,000 annually and distributes most of these funds to the food pantries for ordering food. McKean County will continue to participate in the Medical Assistance Transportation Program with the
approval of the necessary resolution at this meeting. As the grantee of this funding the county assumes full responsibility for assuring that non-emergency medical transportation services are provided to eligible Medical Assistance recipients who require such services. Also adopted by a 3-0 vote was the Language Access Plan certification agreement for the McKean County Redevelopment Authority as part of the Emergency Solutions Grant. To meet the minimum needs of the authority’s identified limited English proficiency population, all pertinent communications and notices must be written in the various languages that the authority has identified. personnel items were approved. Bradford attorney Tony Clarke, LeRoy “Butch” Schaffer, Richard Kallenborn and Nancy Rathbun were reappointed to four-year terms on the McKean County Planning Commission. Commissioners accepted the resignation of Amy Agular, effective June 1. She was employed in the prothonotary’s office. Hired through the PA State/ Local Internship Program through Workforce Solutions were interns Gabrielle Neubert, GIS, in the planning commission office and Jennifer Amsler in the Good Growing Gardens program. Corey Cochran and Matt Bailey were approved as summer assistants in the 3G program. Many Department of Hu-
man Services contracts were OK’d, including one for Bradford attorney Stan Pecora Jr. as mental health review officer. During the commissioners’ comments part of the agenda, Carol Duffy reminded county residents, “It’s very, very important, very, very important to complete the 2020 census forms.” Filling out these forms can be done online, in person or via telephone. Congressional apportionment and federal funds distributions are just two of the many impacts accurate census data can have. Chairman Thomas Kreiner noted the commissioners’ June 23 meeting at 10 a.m. will be conducted via telephone conference.
Otto Township Old Home Days canceled DUKE CENTER — After careful consideration, the Otto Township Old Home Days committee has decided to cancel the 2020 Old Home Days Event scheduled for July 24 to 26. In your backyard: Conservation at home
While people have recently spent more time at home, they may have realized that home is a refuge and place to relax and recharge. The McKean County Conservation District suggests that, while people look at their property, they consider also making their yard a refuge for wildlife, birds and pollinators. Small changes to help habitat and the environment can have big impacts. Even a small backyard is large enough to help animals find food and shelter. One’s choice of plants and maintenance practices can help the larger ecosystem beyond the property. One important consideration in home landscapes is the choice of plants. There are problematic plants around, even ones promoted for landscaping, that spread into fields and forests. Examples of popular non-native invasive plants falling into this category include Japanese barberry, burning bush, Japanese honeysuckle, butterfly bush, Bishop’s weed, English ivy, periwinkle, Bradford pear and Norway maple. While these plants grow easily, quickly and are readily available, they can actually cause problems since they can quickly spread into the wild from seeds or shoots. Even if people do not see young plants starting nearby, birds have probably carried the seeds onto nearby locations, including forests Replacing non-native
landscape plants, trees and shrubs with native alternatives is a great start to improve backyard habitat. Native plants provide food for insects and birds that invasive plants don’t. All these creatures have evolved surviving on native plants in their local environment. Invasive plants are not often used or do not provide good nutrition for wildlife. Plants are the base of the food chain. Including a variety of native plants will provide resources for a wide variety of pollinators, birds and other wildlife. In addition to individual plants, consider the addition of a natural meadow, with wildflowers and native grasses. Meadows require little or no watering, and eliminate mowing needs. They provide many benefits for pollinators and birds. Visit the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources website for a detailed list of invasive plants and native alternatives. Many natives resemble and can replace common invasive landscape plants. A few examples include ninebark, a very similar beneficial replacement for barberry; spicebush is an alternative to invasive burning bush; or choose serviceberry over Callery or Bradford pear trees. The McKean County Conservation District has additional resources upon request; contact them at 814-887-4017.

Beautiful landscaping can add instant curb appeal to a property. But beauty isn’t the only thing that makes idyllic landscaping attractive to homeowners. Some landscaping features, such as shade trees, save homeowners money while adding aesthetic appeal. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home. Shading
also cuts air conditioning costs, which tend to be expensive in areas with warm, humid climates. In fact, the DOE notes that well-planned landscapes can reduce unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by anywhere from 15 to 50 percent. When planting shade trees, one of the first decisions homeowners will need to make is which type of tree, deciduous or evergreen, they want to plant. Deciduous trees are those that seasonally shed their leaves, while evergreens are trees that keep their leaves throughout the year. Deciduous trees can help keep homes cool in the summer by blocking sun, and those same trees can be beneficial in winter after they shed their leaves by letting the sun in and keeping homes warm. But evergreens also can be beneficial in winter by blocking wind, potentially preventing cold air from making its

Evergreen trees Planting evergreens to block wind is known as “windbreaking,” which lowers the wind chill near a home. Wind also can be used to cool a home in summer. But these benefits can only be realized when evergreens are strategically planted. • Location, location, location: The DOE advises planting evergreen trees to the north and northwest of the home to stop wind. In addition, to get the most bang for your windbreaking buck, the distance between the home and windbreak should be two to five times the height of the mature tree. • Plant trees on either side of the house. Planting trees on either side of the house will direct cooling winds toward the home in the summer. Shade trees can help homeowners reduce their energy bills, making them valuable and attractive additions to any landscape.

How to incorporate more heart-healthy foods into your diet
Diet and heart health go hand in hand. The American Heart Association notes that a healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons to fight cardiovascular diseases, which the World Health Organization says kill more people across the globe each year than any other disease. Men and women do not need degrees in nutrition science to create hearthealthy diets for themselves and their families. In fact, the familiar calls to “eat your fruits and vegetables” many adults recall from childhood lessons or nights around the family dinner table still bear weight today. A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables is a hallmark of a healthy lifestyle. And supplementing such a diet with other hearthealthy foods is a great way to reduce one’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Fruits and vegetables The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that fruits and vegetables are healthy whether they’re fresh, fro-
zen, canned, and/or dried. The AHA advises eating fruits and vegetables with every meal and snack, and that may require a little creativity as you sneak them into favorite dishes. For example, the AHA suggests replacing half the ground meat in recipes for burgers, meatloaf or meatballs with cooked chopped mushrooms. The mushrooms can be finely chopped with a knife or food processor, and then sautéed in some olive oil until they’re soft. They can then be mixed in with the lean meat, and the meal can be cooked as it normally would. At the breakfast table, add fruit to a bowl of cereal to make for a more flavorful morning meal. Dairy products When purchasing dairy products, the DHHS recommends sticking to fat-free or low-fat options. Replace whole milk with fat-free or 1 percent milk and buy only fat-free or low-fat cheese. When snacking, reach for fat-free or low-fat plain yogurt or
cottage cheese. You can even add fruit or vegetables to such snacks to make snack time even more heart-healthy. Proteins Healthy proteins are another way people can promote heart health with their daily diets. When choosing proteins at the grocery store, the AHA recommends choosing chicken and fish over red meats. That’s because red meats, which include beef and lamb, have more saturated fat than chicken and fish. Saturated fats increase blood cholesterol levels and can worsen heart disease, while the unsaturated fats in fish like salmon can actually reduce the risk for cardiovascular issues like heart failure and ischemic stroke. When preparing poultry, remove the skin, as most of the saturated fat in poultry is found just beneath the skin. Grains When buying grains, the DHHS recommends reading the ingredients list on the package before pur-
chasing. Make sure whole wheat or another whole grain is the first item listed in the ingredients list, and choose only those products
that say 100 percent whole grain. Instead of preparing white rice as a side dish, serve brown or wild rice, quinoa or oats.
A heart-healthy diet is easy to design and just as flavorful as less healthy alternatives.

The importance of being seen on the road (MS) — As they spend more and more time in their vehicles, drivers tend to grow more comfortable behind the wheel. As a result, drivers may be inclined to take certain things, including how visible they are to approaching motorists, for granted. When drivers think of their vehicle lights, they tend to be most concerned with how those lights impact how they can see the road ahead of them at night. Clearly lit roadways vastly improve driver safety, and the right headlights can go a long way toward illuminating even the darkest of roads. But drivers also must take the necessary steps to ensure they’re easily seen by fellow motorists. • Routinely inspect all vehicle lights. Headlights can make vehicles more visible to oncoming traffic, but it’s important that drivers routinely inspect brake lights, taillights and signal lights as well. Such inspections can ensure that vehicles behind and alongside drivers’ own cars and trucks can see them as they brake or attempt to change lanes. • Upgrade to LED lights. Even lights that are working properly can be a serious safety hazard. That’s because the standard incandescent lights found in many vehicles do a poor job of effectively illuminating vehicles when drivers apply the brakes or put their turn signals on. Lights that fail to immediately alert fellow motorists that drivers have applied the brakes or
are making a turn can contribute to accidents, especially when vehicles are moving at high speeds. The new LED lighting technology, which is used in Philips Ultinon LEDs, makes the lights much brighter and more visible than standard incandescent lights, delivering more dynamic lighting for both exterior and interior vehicle applications. Designed as direct replacements for brake and taillights, signal lamps, back up lights, running lights and side markers, Ultinon LEDs turn on instantly and can reduce braking distance by up to 20 feet at speeds as high as 75 miles per hour. That superior, more immediate light output ensures vehicles are seen more quickly when drivers are turning or applying the brakes. And because their advanced design
makes them highly resistant to extreme heat, vibration and other potentially harmful environmental conditions, Ultinon LEDs can provide drivers with the peace of mind that their lights will last longer than standard incandescent lights without exhibiting diminished performance. Lumileds, the exclusive supplier of Philips automotive light products, offers a full range of Ultinon LEDs and has also developed a convenient online Bulb Look Up that helps drivers identify the right LED
for their particular vehicles. The Bulb Look Up, available at www. philipsautolighting. com, even tells them where they can buy the LEDs. • Drive defensively, especially at night. A 2016 analysis of data from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Fatality Analysis Reporting System found that more than 40 percent of all motor vehicle crash deaths in the United States in 2014 occurred between the hours of 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. It’s no coincidence that automotive
fatalities spike during nighttime hours, when drivers’ vision is naturally diminished
and darkened roadways make it harder to see fellow motorists. When driving during twilight hours and after the sun goes down, drivers can make a concerted effort to drive defensively. Make sure brakes are applied early enough so other drivers have ample time to react, and flip turn signals on long before making turns. In addition, leave more room between your own vehicle and those of fellow motorists, which can protect you and your passengers from drivers whose vehicles are still employing outdated lights. When driving at night, drivers must remember that seeing and being seen makes for much safer roads. More information about vehicle lighting technology is available at www.philipsautolighting.com.

the 15.5-17.5% range for increased unemployment. On a related note, the Appalachian Regional Commission has released “The Appalachian Region: A Data Overview from the 2014-2018 American Community Survey Chartbook,” known more familiarly as “The Chartbook.” The data in this report showed employment in the Appalachian Region and compared it to the national average. According to a breakdown of the data collected, 73% of the adult workforce in the Appalachian Region (ages 25-64) participate in the civilian workforce. This is slightly lower than the national rate of 77.6%. However, 31.9% of Appalachian region residents are forced to work outside the county they live in, which is higher than the national rate of 27.7% of US workers required to commute to work in another county. The unemployment rates in Appalachia are divided into
regions, with the highest rate recorded in Central Appalachia at 6.9%. North Central Appalachia comes next, with 5.2%, followed by Southern Appalachia and South Central Appalachia, both with 4.7% and Northern Appalachia with 4.6%. This information shows that the Appalachian Region was holding its own in regard to employment, prior to the Coronavirus pandemic and related closures, which have had long-reaching effects and resulted in the permanent closure of many businesses. The Appalachian Region includes 13 states, one of which is Pennsylvania, 420 counties and 25.7 million residents. Southern and South Central Appalachia continue to show population growth, at rates of 6.7% and 3.9%, respectively. Meanwhile, the northern areas of Appalachia show population decline at rates of 2.6%(northern), 1.2% (north central) and 3% (central).
