BELMONT — Celebrating its 20th year of bringing fresh farmto-market products to Allegany County, the Belmont Farmers Market will be up and running June 4.

“We are looking forward to seeing and welcoming our old customers and new customers to the market,” said Deb Wagoner, market manager. “We’ll be smiling through our masks.”

Infections, quarantines diminish in Allegany County

By BOB CLARK BELMONT — Only three active cases of COVID-19 were on record as of this past weekend in Allegany County.

The county Department of Health reported that COVID-19 cases remained flat at 44 as of earlier this week — with just one new case reported in almost two weeks.

Meanwhile, 41 patients have recovered, with four new recoveries reported Friday. One death was reported in late March.

In Cattaraugus County, a third death due to COVID-19 was reported over the weekend.

To date, 630 residents

have been in quarantine or isolation, while 22 remain separated — down from 25 on Thursday.

IN NEIGHBORING STEUBEN COUNTY, numbers show that the majority of the county’s infections and deaths from the disease occurred at nursing homes.

Officials reported that

31 of 41 deaths occurred in three nursing homes — Hornell Gardens and Elderwood in Hornell; and Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital’s Skilled Nursing Facility in Bath.

Of the deaths, 21 were reportedly living in the Hornell nursing homes, while 10 were living in Bath.

According to a conference call held Friday, Darlene Smith, public health director, reported 255 cases in the county, with 174 recoveries.

There are also 116 people in isolation or quarantine.

Of those still ill, 22 are in nursing homes and nine are in hospitals.

GoFundMe effort started for Allegany County farm after fire

BELMONT — The Alfred Farmers Market has started a GoFundMe campaign to help one of Allegany County’s local meat producers, Mascho Homestead Farms, which was heavily damaged by a May 3 fire.

Organizers say many residents have purchased grass-fed beef and pork products at the Rogue Carrot or at farmers markets in Alfred, Angelica or Belmont from Danelle, James “Kink” and Gretchen at Mascho Homestead Farms.

The fire engulfed and destroyed two chicken coops containing 60 laying hens, and a two-bay garage with freezers full of meat products.

The cause of the fire was reported as undetermined but originated near an electrical outlet. While the Maschos have insurance, organizers say not everything that was destroyed will be covered by their policy, an approxi-

“Customers can preorder and pay with credit card, cash, check, EBT/ SNAP, senior farm market checks and WIC farm market checks,” Wagoner said.

The market is providing curbside service for both online and on-site shoppers who don’t want to get out of their cars.

When ordering online, a time slot can be chosen for pickup. While the times are set up depending on the first letter of the shopper’s last name, if that time isn’t convenient another slot can be requested.

If a shopper is uncomfortable with ordering online, they can just show up at the market and beep their horn. Someone will come to take their order and deliver it curbside.

Cornell Cooperative Extension will be providing recipe cards that will be distributed with every order, and plan to be in attendance to host cooking demonstrations as soon as restrictions are lifted and they are allowed back, as will the Allegany County Office of the Aging to distribute senior farmers market coupons.

As more local produce comes to the market upon harvesting, the farmers market is planning to offer Saturday online orders and pickup only. Times will be announced when Saturday ordering is available.

Started in 2000 by Walter Hofmann, the Belmont Farmers Market has one original vendor, Dick Benjamin, from Dick’s Bees, of Belmont.

He will be joining other vendors from across Allegany County, including: Wagoner Bees & Produce, a fourthgeneration farm; Amish baked goods from Henry and Ada Stutzman; Snyder Hill Nursery; Mascho Homestead Farms; New Starts Farm; White Valley Farm; Hint’s Red Roof Maple; Randall’s Farm; Jara Farms; Ross Chalker Wood Crafts; The Grab Bag and Laurie McCarthy, an independent sales representative for Avon.

WELLSVILLE — Every year, seven days in May are set aside to celebrate National Nurses Day. The week of May 6th until Florence Nightingale's birthday on May 12th is an opportunity to show our nurses how much they are appreciated.

This year, the nursing staff at Jones Memorial Hospital celebrated by giving back to the community that has been so generous and

supportive during the COVID-19 crisis by holding a food drive.

“The JMH Nurses Giving Back food drive was inspired by the incredible generosity from the community to the hospital during this COVID crisis,” explained Donna Bliven, RN, Vice President of Patient Care Services at Jones Memorial. “We wanted to do something for the community to show our appreciation and the

food pantry was in need, so it was a win-win.”

To support the effort, nurses brought in an assortment of canned goods including fruits, vegetables, beans, and evaporated milk, as well as cereal, pasta, and sauces. By the end of the week, they had collected ten boxes of food for the Joyce Family Food Pantry in Wellsville.

In order to maintain proper social distancing, guests were required to remain in their vehicles as they pulled into the school parking lot. Volunteers registered the guests and loaded the food boxes, which were provided by Foodlink.

Each family received one box of food, which contained the same contents and amount of items, and was served on a first-come, firstserved basis. Items included pasta, soups, fruit jelly, sauces, apples, carrots, a gallon of milk, cheese, and

bread.

The majority of the boxes were distributed within an hour, with the last box given out about an hour and a half after the event began.

Those who arrived after the last box of food was distributed, received gallons of milk and were provided with referrals to local food pantries, which can be obtained by calling the 211 Helpline, according to Belinda Knight, director of Community Operations at ACCORD. “ACCORD’s pantry also serves the entire county and can offer delivery,” Knight said.

“Locally, the Alfred food pantry and Almond food pantries can fill those needs.”

ALFRED — With over 300 prepacked boxes to hand out at a recent food distribution drive-thru event, more than a dozen Alfred State College faculty and staff members stepped up alongside other volunteers to provide food to those in need.

Foodlink, an organization dedicated to fighting hunger and building healthier communities, coordinated the two-hour event, which took place at Alfred-Almond Central School. The event was developed in response to food insecurity caused by COVID-19, and sought to provide staple items where food is difficult to access or there is lack of availability.

Pritchard named market leader of First Citizens Community Bank

WELLSVILLE — First Citizens Community Bank has announced the promotion of Abbie Pritchard to market leader of its Western Pennsylvania/New York market, which includes locations in Wellsville and Genesee and Ulysses in Pennsylvania.

Pritchard has worked for FCCB for more than 31 years, getting her start in the Ulysses branch. In 1999 she was promoted to branch manager of the Genesee office. From this branch, she built an effective network of business and customer connections in Wellsville, prompting the bank to explore opportunities for a branch in that community.

In 2005, Pritchard became the manager of the bank’s newly-constructed Wellsville branch.

As the new market leader, she is responsible for the financial performance of the branches in that market, which involves business acquisition, customer satisfaction and retention and staff development.

Pritchard spends much of her time volunteering in her community. She served as the president of the board of the Allegany County United way for eight years. She is the secretary of the Allegany County SPCA and is well

The dangers of mowing too low

Spring marks the return of many things. Trees and flowers begin to bloom again in spring, while warmer temperatures are welcomed back with open arms. Grass also begins to grow again in the spring. That means it’s not too long before homeowners have to dust off their lawn mowers and get to work. Those who don’t necessarily enjoy mowing the lawn may be tempted to cut their grass very low, as doing so can mean longer intervals between mowing sessions. However, mowing grass too low can have a very adverse effect on a lawn.

• Cutting too low can injure the grass. Cutting grass too low can injure the grass, creating what’s essentially a domino effect of problems to come.

Injured grass will focus on its recovery efforts,

thereby making it vulnerable to other issues.

• Cutting too low promotes weed growth.

Injured grass is vulnerable to invaders, including weeds and insects.
