In one case — a manufacturer that works with the food industry — the firm had been attempting to get an exemption as an essential business before this week. “With that exemption not coming along, that’s great news for them,” Crandall said. Phase 2 includes professional services, retail, administrative support and real estate. Phase 3 includes opening restaurants and food services for regular operation. Phase 4 includes arts, entertainment, recreation and education. Crandall said he was not particularly concerned over how the county started to reopen — whether part of the Western New York region or as officials in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties asked the state over the weekend to consider opening just those three counties. “The rural counties were coming in good with the numbers,” Crandall said, noting that Erie County — with Buffalo seeing a large outbreak of the disease — skewed the figures into causing the region to remain closed longer. Monday brought the region into a position where it could reach Phase 1 of reopening. “However it’s sliced, it’s good to be back in business,” Crandall said. One workforce that will not immediately return, however, is the approximately 50 Allegany County government workers who were furloughed. Crandall said there are two issues at play to return the workers — the furlough of which is projected to save hundreds of thousands of dollars before July 31 if they remain off the job — are demand for services and particularly revenue. “We still don’t know where we’re going to be with cuts from Albany,” Crandall said, noting a line in the state budget which gives the governor’s office the power to cut spending if revenues lag too far behind. In addition, Crandall noted lower sales tax revenues and concerns over residents being able to pay their property taxes on time complicate the equation. However, the county will assess programs and services demands daily — and if there is a need, “there’s no reason those furloughs have to be out until July 31,” he said.

This, after all, was a group that helped Fillmore elevate not only the softball program, but was the latest contributing class in an unprecedented era of success for all girls sports at the small Allegany County institution. This year alone, the soccer team (18-1-1) won the Section 5 Class D-1 championship — also under Beardsley’s watch; the basketball team (20-3)

Alfred State donates face Pain management specialist masks, gowns to healthcare to serve UR Medicine clinics workers

ALFRED — With so many healthcare workers currently in need of personal protective equipment, Alfred State has stepped up by donating face masks and gowns to local hospitals and nursing homes. Altogether, the college has donated more than 2,300 N95 face masks to medical workers. St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville and Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville have received between

500 to 600 masks each. Nursing homes such as Wellsville Manor, Elderwood at Hornell and Hornell Gardens, each received anywhere from 120 to 320 masks. Additionally, roughly 180 gowns that were in stock were also donated. Volunteers sought in Allegany County for ROC COVID initiative

BELMONT — Allegany County residents are being asked to enroll in a voluntary health data system developed by University of Rochester Medical Center as COVID-19 cases remain stable in the county for a third straight day. The Allegany County Department of Health reported Thursday that the number of positive COVID-19 tests stands at 43 for the third day, with 32 of those having recovered. To date, 584 resi-

dents have been in isolation or quarantine, while 38 — a drop of 12 overnight — remain separated. ROC COVID, a cooperative screening initiative from the University of Rochester, Common Ground Health and Rochester Regional Health, is seeking volunteers to sign up for daily health reporting. Officials hope the simple web-based tool will be used to collect health information from volunteers in Allegany, Chemung,

May is Clarity and Mental Health Awareness Month WELLSVILLE — COVID-19 has brought anxiety and uncertainness to rural Allegany County. In this time when nothing is normal, and the new normal is social distancing from many people who have provided comfort in the past, Clarity Wellness Community continues to be a lifeline for the community. “When Clarity began providing services remotely in March, we were confident in our technology and planning that we could continue to meet the mental and behavioral health needs of the community,” said Michael Damiano, execu-

tive director of Clarity. “What we didn’t know was how receptive the people we support would be to seeing their counselor on a computer or speaking with them over a telephone,” Damiano said. Many of Clarity’s current clients were already experienced with participating in telepsychiatry sessions with Clarity’s psychiatrist and nurse practitioners. Most people rapidly adjusted to also seeing their counselors that way also. “May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and I want to recognize not only the Clarity staff who have continued to provide

the highest quality services during this pandemic, but also our clients who have remain engaged with us. Change can be difficult in ordinary times, but our clients are key to the success Clarity has achieved in the virtual treatment environment.” The organization has begun planning for the ultimate return to office-based services. This is likely to initially be a combination of office-centered and remote services, but the timing will depend on protocols established by New York State and the regional groups authorized by the state. “We would like to

National Public Radio says the average American home has nearly tripled in size during the last 50 years. Despite that, 10 percent of Americans still need to rent off-site storage, according to a report in the New York Times Magazine. Self-storage facilities are one of the fastest-growing commercial real estate segments, and the Self Storage Association says there are more than 50,000 storage facilities in the U.S. alone. How motorcycle Tire maintenance keeps drivers safe riders can stay safe Warm weather and road trips often go hand-in-hand, and spring and summer are prime seasons for motorcycle riders to get out on the highway. Motorcycle riders are at an extreme disadvantage when sharing the road with cars and trucks. In the event of a collision, motorcycle riders can be seriously injured and are far less protected than those in a car or truck. The latest data indicates motorcyclists are about 28 times as likely as passenger car occupants to die in a motor vehicle crash, states the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Motorcycle riders face greater hazards from debris on the road or other road conditions. Despite all this, the NHTSA says the number of motorcyclists killed in crashes dropped to 4,985 in 2018, marking an almost 5 percent decrease from their most recent study on motorcycling fatalities. Continuing to be safe, and educating oneself about motorcycle safety — whether you are a rider or someone sharing the road — can continue to keep injuries and accidents low. • Wear protective gear. The NHTSA says the right helmet can mean the difference between life and death. From shape to style to fit, riders can work with helmet companies and

outfitters to find the right helmet for them. Long pants, eye protection, riding gloves, and a waterproof jacket also make for effective and protective gear. • Take a class. Novices would be wise to enroll in classes to go over motorcycling basics and safety guidelines that can keep them alive and well on the road. Check with your local motor vehicle commission or driving schools about classes that may be available. • Avoid blind spots. Motorcycles are difficult to see on the road. Try to stay out of vehicles’ blind spots as much as possible and maintain safe distances between your bike and others on the road. • Make yourself visible. Wear something bright or use reflective or nylon tape and mesh to make yourself more visible to fellow motorists. • Never ride tired or intoxicated. Fatigue and/or alcohol reduces reaction time and could find you making costly mistakes that put your life in danger. • Share the road responsibly. Drivers of cars and trucks need to be diligent in keeping their eyes and ears open for motorcycle riders, allowing them a wide berth. Motorcyclists will be taking to the roads in increasing numbers, and safety should be their top priority.

Maintaining tires is an important component of safe driving. Tires are some of the hardest working parts on a car or truck and are subjected to wear and tear every time rubber meets the road. Tires affect many components of driving, including handling, braking and the comfort of the ride. Maintaining tires makes driving safe not only for drivers and their passengers, but also for fellow motorists. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that, in 2017, 738 fatalities occurred because of tire-related crashes. Many of those crashes were no doubt preventable, and that only highlights the importance of maintaining tires and monitoring their performance. Poor tire maintenance can lead to premature wear and potentially result in a blowout. The automotive group AAA notes it is important to visually inspect tires as often as possible. Drivers should look for overall tread wear. Pay special attention to tread wear on one edge of the tires, which could indicate poor alignment. Erratic tread wear may mean tires are out of

balance. Drivers also should pay attention to how their cars drive and sounds. Unusual vibration or thumping noises suggest issues with the tires. A car that pulls in one direction also may be experiencing tire problems. Vehicle owners should be aware of the routine maintenance steps that can keep them safe and improve the life expectancy of tires. • Tire pressure: The NHTSA says only 19 percent of consumers properly check and inflate their tires. Keeping tires properly inflated is one of the most important steps to maintaining them. Tires lose around 1 psi per month, and underinflated or overinflated tires can contribute to unusual wear, blowouts and even excessive fuel consumption. • Rotation: Check the owner’s manual or
