WNY Wilds entices visitors with new campaign, Art in Our Nature

BELMONT — The Western NY Wilds Offices of Planning, Development and Tourism has launched its newest marketing communications campaign aimed at enticing visitors to explore the Art in Our Nature — from the works created by the many talented artists and artisans tucked within the hills to the beautiful landscapes that are like works of art in themselves. The Art in Our Nature marketing campaign is the first to be rolled out under Allegany County’s new branding as the Western NY Wilds. From the creative collaboration of Josiah Brown, the marketing consultant behind the new brand, Genesee Valley Media, and the Western NY Wilds Office of Tourism, the campaign launched its first video across social media on Monday. “In the months since launching our new branding as the

Western NY Wilds we’ve received a lot of positive feedback from the countywide community and leaders across business, government, and the tourism industry,” said Gretchen Hanchett, executive director of the Greater Allegany County Chamber of Commerce, which contracts with

the county for Tourism. “We’ve also had a signiﬁcant amount of interest from Allegany County businesses and organizations who want to identify themselves with the Western NY Wilds brand, which is very exciting,” she said. “The launch of the Art in Our Nature marketing communications campaign is the next step in telling the Western NY Wilds story.” The marketing campaign will feature content that highlights the Western NY Wilds population of artists and artisans, the deep relationship with nature that exists here and inspires human creativity and celebrates the wild natural beauty that is evident all around us. The campaign will run throughout the spring and summer seasons into October, culminating with the Allegany Artisans Studio Tour Weekend.

“A unique attribute of our county is the density of our creative talent,” Hanchett said. “With the launch of this new marketing communications campaign, we’re inviting visitors to experience the range of creative talent we have available here; visitors have access to a variety of artistic experiences — whether through learning in a class, shopping for unique artisan works, or being inspired to capture the beauty of the Wilds for themselves.” The Art in Our Nature campaign will target visitors across digital and traditional marketing mediums, including print, social media platforms, video and email. WELLSVILLE — PM Research Inc. has entered into a lease agreement with the Steam & Air Solutions business of Curtiss-Wright to utilize a portion of the office space located at Plant 2, 2475 Tarantine Boulevard. The lease agreement, effective March 16, will allow Curtiss-Wright to utilize a portion of the office space for the 32 employees who currently work at the former Dresser-Rand office building located in downtown Wellsville. “We are very excited to have come to an arrangement that benefits all parties, especially the employees who can retain their positions within our local economy," said Scott Vossler, general manager of PM Research, in a press release. "The lease will allow PM Research to maintain full utilization of the manufacturing area within the building, while providing office space for the needs of Curtiss-Wright and its employees." In 2018, PM Research signed a lease agreement to occupy the former GE/Lufkin Building on Tarantine Boulevard. Jones Memorial celebrates Year of the Nurse and Midwife

WELLSVILLE — In conjunction with the 200th birthdays of Florence Nightingale and Susan B. Anthony and the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote, Jones Memorial Hospital and UR Medicine have joined the World Health Organization who in celebrating 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife. Each of the 127 registered nurses, 31 licensed practical nurses, 17 patient care technicians, two nurse practitioners and the nurse midwife received pins denoting 2020 as the year of the Nurse and Midwife. “It’s so important to focus on the vital part nurses play in health care, and to encourage future nurses to choose this ﬁeld, which offers meaningful and important work in a variety of settings,” said Donna

Jones Memorial Hospital’s nursing and midwife staffers are celebrating 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife.

Nurses are the largest workforce in health care and are a critical part of the health care team. “Nurse are special people

who are passionate about the work they do,” said Karen Davis, chief nursing executive at UR Medicine. “This is an opportunity to highlight them and tell their stories.” According to WHO, the world needs 9 million more nurses and midwives if it is to achieve universal health coverage by 2030. WHO also notes there are currently more than 20 million

nurses in the world, and according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) there are currently 3.8 million registered nurses in the United States. WHO will release a State of the World’s Nursing Report on World Health Day, April 7. The report aims to provide evidence to make a stronger case for governments to invest in nursing.

Yorks Corners Mennonite volunteers help in South Carolina

BOLIVAR — The Steuben Trust Co. branch in Bolivar will be one of three closing in May as the bank becomes part of Community Bank N.A. In a Workforce Adjustment and Retraining Notiﬁcation issued Feb. 20, the Hornell-based bank announced that 60 employees at the headquarters and at six other locations will be laid off between May 15-28. Four of those employees work in Bolivar. The closure appears to be a matter of redundancy following the merger — Community Bank operates a branch at 380 Main St., about two blocks from the Steuben Trust branch. The closing branches include Bolivar, Alfred and Geneseo. A worker each at locations in Belmont and Rochester will also be laid off, while

two will be laid off in Warsaw. In October, Community Bank and Steuben Trust announced the sale, with a value of around $107 million. “Together, we will strive to continue building quality relationships and to better serve our valued customers and communities, as our companies have over the past 150 years,” company ofﬁcials said in a press release. “We are excited about the opportunity to bring together two strong and culturally aligned companies that will continue to provide excellence in ﬁnancial services. The merger is consistent with Community Bank and Steuben Trust Company’s long term commitment to provide an enhanced customer experience.” Steuben Trust was founded in 1902. The bank currently has branches in Alfred,

Andover, Arkport, Bath, Belmont, Bolivar, Canaseraga, Canisteo, Clarence, Geneseo, Henrietta, Warsaw and Wellsville. One location, in Whitesville, was closed in December. Headquartered in Dewitt, Community Bank has more than 260 locations in New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Massachusetts. Local sites include Olean, Salamanca, Cuba, Portville, Wellsville, Angelica, Belfast and Franklinville. The area also houses some administrative operations on North Union Street in Olean and in the town of Allegany. Earlier this winter, the company closed its Westons Mills branch. Community Bank ofﬁcials said that while a report to the state indicated there will be layoffs associated with the merger of the two banks, other employees will be

retained. “While the Workforce Adjustment and Retraining Notiﬁcation issued Feb. 20 states 60 employees will be displaced, that number does include 21 employees who are being retained but moving to other positions or nearby locations,” said Hal Wentworth, senior vice president for retail banking at Community Bank. “All customer-facing branch employees will be offered employment with Community Bank, N.A. including the Bolivar, Alfred and Geneseo branches. … In the end, 39 Steuben Trust positions will be eliminated due to overlapping operational responsibilities."

WELLSVILLE — From Feb. 16 through Feb. 22, Yorks Corners Mennonite Church in Wellsville sponsored a service trip with Mennonite Disaster Service to Bennettsville, S.C. The trip was to help residents rebuild homes destroyed or damaged by ﬂooding from Hurricane Florence in Sept. 2018. This record breaking rainfall of up to 30 inches caused extensive ﬂooding. Mennonite Disaster Service is a volunteer network of Anabaptist churches that responds in Christian love to those affected by disasters, often serving on site for several years after the disaster. The ten volunteer participants were Gene Miller, Matt Engle, Marcia Studer, Terry Freeman, Chris Draper, Frank Engle, Peter Havens, Jim Smoker, Patty Havens and Joelle Havens.

This year, that falls on March 8 — the day we’ll have ofﬁcially moved our clocks forward one hour at 2 a.m. (Most folks who remember to do so turn their clocks forward when they go to bed that Saturday night.) Daylight saving time means the sun goes down an hour later relative to the clock. In Allegany County, the sun will set Saturday, March 7, at about 6:10 p.m. The next day, sunset will be 7:11 p.m. Daylight saving time

The department’s website says that daylight saving time saves energy, reduces trafﬁc fatalities, and reduces crime. Not everybody accepts the time change. The leading author on daylight saving time said it only cuts electrical use by 0.5% — if that. A study in Indiana in 2008 showed little change in energy use when parts of the state went to daylight saving time. Similar results were

found in Australia in 2000, when part of the country switched temporarily to DST to extend the hours for Summer Olympics events. States can opt out of DST as long as the governor, state legislature and Congress agree. At least four DST bills have been introduced in the New York Legislature. One bill would make daylight saving time permanent, one bill would eliminate it altogether and two would create task forces to study daylight saving time. Each of the measures are stuck in committees in Albany.
