PA Wilds showcased in new DCNR Conservation Landscape report work has grown by 900 percent over the last five years, visitor spending in the region has grown to $1.8 billion annually, and small businesses in the Center’s primary business development network — the Wilds Cooperative of PA — have created 99 jobs over the last two years. In addition, the Wilds Cooperative of Pennsylvania has grown to include over 300 businesses, artisans, and organizations from across the region. Several of the artisans are also seeing economic benefits from selling their products at the PA Wilds Conservation Shop, where 90 percent of the products sold are regionally made by small businesses — boosting local economies and fostering community pride. “A big part of our economy and way of life here revolves around our forest and public lands,” says PA Wilds Center Founder and CEO Ta Enos. “Our public lands make possible our internationally-acclaimed dark skies and habitat for our world-famous elk.

Achievements made in the Pennsylvania Wilds, a 13-county region designated as a Conservation Landscape by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), were recently highlighted in a report by the state agency. DCNR’s 2019 Pennsylvania Conservation Landscapes — Models for Successful Collaboration report shares the results of a recent evaluation of the agency’s Conservation Landscape program. The report also highlights landscape efforts and best practices being used to achieve conservation and revitalization goals. “The Pennsylvania Wilds Conservation Landscape (PAWCL) is one of the most ambitious landscape-level initiatives in the United States,” the report notes, pointing to the rural region’s success in attaining investments to grow an entrepreneurial ecosystem. “This highly impactful practice is most evident in the Pennsylvania Wilds conservation landscape, a very rural place with more public land than anywhere in the state.” The report, which points to the growing outdoor recreation industry and strategic investments in public lands and facilities in the Pennsylvania Wilds, positions the region as a model for how the Conservation Landscape program is gaining traction and creating real value for communities. Flu cases still on the rise in region By JoEllen Wankel Flu season is still in action, and area hospitals shared statistics and advice for avoiding illness when possible. The PA Department of Health, citing the number of flu cases reported between Sept. 29, 2019 and Feb. 15, 2020 for the region, reported as follows: Elk County has the highest numbers of confirmed cases, with 79 cases of Type A and 277 cases of Type
B; McKean County has had 46 confirmed cases of Type A and 171 cases of Type B; Potter County has had 37 confirmed cases of Type A and 186 cases of Type B. Cameron County has the lowest number of reported cases of both types, with four reported cases of Type A and six of Type B. Bradford Regional Medical Center has been handling an influx of cases during the new year. “Currently influenza
activity is high in our area and we do expect this to continue into March,” said Terrie O’Brien, Infection prevention/patient safety for BRMC. “We have seen an increase in the number of Influenza A cases, totaling 62 for the season and 127 cases of Influenza B. There have been hospitalizations at BRMC related to influenza complications.” Hospital staff is doing what they can to keep people healthy by putting some restrictions on who can visit. “For the safety of our patients and staff, we have instituted visitation restrictions which prohibit visitors under the age of 17 and anyone with symptoms of illness. In addition, we require patients who enter the building with a cough to put a mask

on,” O’Brien said. Meanwhile, UPMC Cole in Coudersport is experiencing its own trends in regard to flu cases. “UPMC Cole has seen an average of 30 to 40 confirmed cases a week since Jan. 12. These totals are trending and typical for peaks of what we’ve seen in years past,” said Jennifer Schieble, MHA, BSN, RN, director of Quality, Infection Control, and Patient Safety at UPMC Cole. “Early in the season (October, November, and early December) we had one to five confirmed cases a week,” Schieble said. “Since the beginning of the year, we’ve seen a steady uptick in the confirmed cases and it’s been at 30 to 40 confirmed cases

weekly for a little over a month.” When asked if flu cases in the area could potentially have peaked already, Schieble said that each year is different. For example, last year there was a late spike in cases at the end of the season. While success rates of the recommended flu vaccination is a topic of debate, medical officials do still firmly believe there are benefits to receiving the flu shot. “Influenza vaccination is still recommended for the simple fact that flu season lasts into April and sometimes May. While we don’t know the effectiveness of the vaccine this year, it appears to be similar to previous years, falling between 40 and 60%,” O’Brien said. “Recent studies indicate that even when the vaccine doesn’t prevent influenza, getting vaccinated may reduce the

severity of the illness. According to CDC estimates, there have been 26 million flu illnesses with 14,000 – 36,000 flu related deaths.” She added that nationwide, about 70% of flu cases are Type B, and about 30% are Type A. “We are seeing the same type of statistics in our community,” O’Brien said. “Remember that the numbers in our community only indicate those cases who have had influenza tests done, and do not reflect all of those folks who treat themselves at home without ever being tested.” Symptoms of influenza include fever, body aches, cough, sore throat, headache, fatigue and runny or stuffy nose. Some people, mostly children, may experience vomiting and diarrhea. “Antivirals remain an effective way to reduce the symptoms of illness and are most effective when given early,” O’Brien noted. “Most people do not need medical treatment or antivirals, and should stay home to avoid contact with others and get plenty of rest. Individuals who are at high risk, very ill or concerned about their illness should seek medical treatment. The most effective way to prevent illness is to get vaccinated, use good hand hygiene and avoid touching your face with your hands.”

Items to take to the tax preparer For many working Americans, April 15 is synonymous with taxes. But taxpayers may be happy to learn that they have two extra days to file their returns in 2018. That’s because this year April 15 falls on a Sunday, and April 16 is Emancipation Day, when the District of Columbia celebrates Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed more than 3,000 slaves in D.C. The extra two days to file might not be much time, but the extra 48 hours will no
doubt please taxpayers who tend to put off filing until the last minute. Whenever taxpayers decide to begin the process of filing their taxes, those who hire professionals to prepare their returns should have the following items ready when visiting their tax preparers.
tax ID numbers of all dependents • Last year’s tax return • Spouse’s tax return from previous year, if filing jointly
