Belfast Central’s hydroponic/aquaponic program gets boost BELFAST — Surrounded by fields of wheat and corn, Belfast Central School is looking beyond soil farming with the help of a grant program offered by State Farm Insurance. The school’s hydroponic/aquaponic curriculum got a boost through the program’s Teacher Assist grants for innovative teaching ideas. Belfast was one of 40 schools across the state to receive a $2,500 grant. The grant will fund the purchase of two vertical hydroponic growing systems to expand a current program in the school. Over the last decade, Joshua Hazelton, science and technology teacher, has been teaching a high school course called Hydroponics and Aquaponics in which students design and maintain several agricultural projects. With the new hydroponic systems, he will be able to introduce, middle school students to this innovative technology. “It is hard to believe that we live in such an
agricultural area and still have students who do not recognize certain plants,” Hazleton said. “Having hydroponics in their curriculum will give them exposure and may spark an interest and inspire them to keep technology in-mind when deciding their future careers.” Hydroponics is the science of growing plants without the use of soil. Instead, plants are grown using water infused with nutrients. Aquaponics is the science of using fish (catfish in the case of the Belfast program) in a water system where waste from the fish supplies nutrients to the plants. “In these controlled systems you can grow ‘clean’ foods without threat from feral animals, pests and E. coli,” Hazleton said. “We’re seeing this more and more in commercial fields. Some restaurants are even growing their own micro greens.” At Belfast, the foods grown hydroponically
and aquaponically are used in the school cafeteria, where fresh lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers show up in the salad bar. Hazelton recently donated 24 heads of justpicked lettuce to a food giveaway. More than just growing food, maintaining the hydroponic and aquaponic systems engages students in problemsolving, critical thinking, data tracking and exposes them to more opportunity and what is happening outside their world, Hazelton said. The two new hydroponic units to be purchased with the grant will be placed strategically in the school where they will be seen by the public and introduce elementary students to the project. One of the new hydroponic units will be placed in the elementary school hallway. The second unit will be placed in the recently renovated South Street entrance to the school, where the public will be able to

Catharine Young, but Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello won the nomination and then took the seat. Graves, a Republican representing District IV, which includes Wellsville and Andover, has served 11 years. ”It has been an honor and a privilege to represent you as a legislator in Allegany County government,” he said. “To say that I have enjoyed serving on the Board of Legislators would be an understatement.” Graves said his agenda while in Belmont was to “focus on things that I felt were holding us back.” He cited the cost of government, duplicating services provided by others and the 8.5% sales tax as chief among those concerns. ”As I have repeatedly advised my peers, there is only one way to reduce taxes, and that is to reduce spending,” he said. “For the most part every department head that I spoke with about this agreed with me and worked within

their agencies to be as cost-effective as possible. I’m confident they will continue to do so.” Graves said, as he did with his tenure as Andover town supervisor and as the

as chair of the Human Services Committee she is a member of Planning & Economic Development, Public Safety and Ways & Means committees. She was chair of the Allegany County Ad Hoc Committee on Opioid/Heroin Issues. Additional current responsibilities include serving on the Soil & Water Board and the Allegany County Industrial Development Agency, of which she

Simple ways to save after being laid off or furloughed The outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 had a dramatic effect on the global economy. Businesses were shuttered seemingly overnight as public health organizations across the globe embraced social distancing as a means to preventing the spread of the potentially deadly virus. Few, if any, businesses proved immune to the economic effects of the COVID-19 outbreak, which forced many employers to lay off or furlough employees. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the week ending April 18 marked the fifth consecutive week that more than three million Americans filed initial unemployment claims. During that period, which for many areas of the United States coincided with the first five weeks of social distancing guidelines going into effect, roughly 26.5

Consumer advocacy groups warn borrowers to learn what the long-term effects of deferring payments may be. Many people have long advocated cutting the cord as a means to saving substantial amounts of money. Cutting the cord refers to forgoing traditional cable television service in favor of less expensive streaming options like Netflix and Amazon Prime. The cut the cord mantra seemed to resonate in the immediate aftermath of the implementation of social distancing, as Netflix reported adding nearly 16
million subscribers in the first quarter of 2020. But before cutting the cord, consumers are urged to see if doing so would actually save them money. Customers who currently bundle their cable with internet and/or phone service may end up paying the same amount of money, if not more, even after canceling their cable subscriptions. Do your homework before cutting the cord, speaking with your provider to learn the true cost of cutting the cord. You may end up saving more by maintaining your cable but removing premium
channels and downgrading to basic packages. • Develop a new budget. Budgeting is an essential component of responsible money management at all times, and especially so in the wake of a layoff or furlough. Do not hesitate to develop a new monthly budget, examining all monthly expenses to determine where costs can be trimmed. The longer you wait, the less you may save during a layoff or furlough. Saving money in the wake of a lay off or furlough can be simpler than people think.

Pointing to a growing interest in hunting, New York state is expanding the deer hunting season in the Southern Zone with a “Holiday Deer Hunt.” The Department of Environmental Conservation is extending the late bow and muzzleloader hunting seasons for deer in 2021 from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, only in the state’s Southern Zone, which includes Cattaraugus and Allegany counties. The new season provides an additional seven days of late-season hunting with bows and muzzleloaders. Hunters must purchase a bowhunting or muzzleloading privilege to participate in the late season, while they may use all deer tags valid
during those seasons. The extended season will “provide new opportunities for New Yorkers and visiting hunters to venture afield during a time when families and friends are gathered together for the holidays and students are home on school break,” DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said. “The extended season is also a great time for younger hunters to go afield with experienced mentors and nurture their knowledge and skills as responsible members of the hunting community.” The extended season will give deer hunters nearly three straight months to go afield. This past year in the Southern Zone the archery season opened Oct. 1 and ran
through Nov. 20, the regular gun season was Nov. 21-Dec. 13 and the muzzleloader and late bowhunting seasons were Dec. 14-22. DEC officials said the extended late hunt does not include the Northern Zone because deer may already be moving to wintering areas by late December and a hunt could result in localized overharvest. DEC indicated it would “adaptively manage” the new late hunt and assess any potential impacts to other outdoor recreational activities or localized deer herds. Given the requirement for use of archery equipment and muzzleloading rifles, “biologists do not anticipate a significant effect on deer harvest or local deer populations,”
DEC said. Pennsylvania has a late archery and flintlock rifle season — this past year it ran the day after Christmas through Jan. 18.
In September, the DEC sought public comment on the proposal to hold the holiday hunt — the agency received more than 3,000 comments on the proposal
and, after a careful review, advanced the proposal for adoption. The new extended season will be posted in the Feb. 17 New York State Register.
HOUGHTON — Business students at Houghton are once again offering free income tax prepara-
tion to qualifying Allegany County residents. The college’s business department, in conjunction
with United Way of Allegany County, is offering this preparation through the IRS Volunteer Income
Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Individuals with low to moderate income, gener-
ally a return income less than $54,000, are eligible for this program, which aids them in preparing their federal and any applicable New York state returns. Student volunteers must pass IRS online tests before being certified to prepare returns and file them electronically, which shortens the wait time for refunds. The volunteers are able to help with special credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit, for those eligible. Houghton College students will prepare 2020 returns via the drop-off method this year. This means that clients will schedule an appoint-
ment to drop off all of their documents, students will prepare the returns separately, and then clients will schedule a second appointment to pick up their completed tax returns.
