WELLSVILLE — Allegany County United Way has received a donation of $5,729.10, all contributions made by employees and owners of Giant Food Mart in Wellsville and Cuba, as well as Park Plaza Liquor in Wellsville and Cuba Liquors. Mandi Joyce-Phelps, director of ACUW, recently accepted a check in the amount from Phil Williams, Wellsville Giant Food Mart store manager, and Jesse McKee, assistant store manager. Joyce-Phelps said Giant Food Mart has historically been a strong supporter of the

United Way, regularly having 100% employee participation in their annual fundraising campaign. “We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful hometown grocery store in our county,” she said, “one that continues year after year to show both their commitment to our community and their dedication to making it a better place.” The contribution will be used to support local health and human service agencies, and will impact the lives of many Allegany County families, she added.

BELVIDERE — The longawaited water line to the Crossroads site will be up and running by the end of the month, economic development officials hope. Craig Clark, executive director of the Allegany County Industrial Development Agency, told the Times Herald that the last of the pipe is in the ground from Friendship to Belvidere after more than a decade of planning. It “should be operational by end of February and probably earlier,” Clark said. “We have a temporary easement that allowed the rest of the waterline to be installed, so the line is now complete.” The system now needs to be tested and given the OK from health authorities. First proposed in the mid2000s to get water to a water park destination in Belvidere, original efforts to create a water district to handle the line were thwarted by the Office of the State Comptroller as financially unfeasible. In 2012, the Allegany County Board of Legislators bonded $3.5

million for the line, and more recently a public benefit corporation was established to manage the system. Those funds were enough to build the line and purchase all of the surrounding property at the truck stop site at the corner of Route 19 and County Route 20, near the interchange with Interstate 86. Primary construction was completed in 2019, but right-of-way issues for a small stretch stalled the final work. Crews are continuing to build the first major development at the end of the water line. In August, the IDA announced that Quicklee’s, founded in 1995 in Avon, would build its 20th location on the site. A fast foodtype restaurant is also to be included in the development. In December, developers worked with local fire departments to burn down the former All American Plaza truck stop and restaurant as a training exercise. Work on the site began shortly thereafter. The foundation is in the ground and exterior walls and rafters have been put up by crews so far.

“Much site work with pumps and paving depend on spring weather,” he said, with an expected completion date of the fall still on target. Work planning a hotel and conference center is moving forward, Clark said, but added that it is “premature to call this a project at this point,” as final contracts have not been signed with the prospective developers yet. In addition, a full review by appropriate town and county planning officials and other efforts need to be completed before moving ahead. Clark added that if all goes well, the hotel construction could begin in 2021. Since at least 2012, officials with the IDA had attempted to attract developers to the site. Efforts were focused on finding a single developer to handle both the truck stop and hotel, but despite several attempts, no developer was able to take on both projects. In 2019, the IDA began seeking separate developers for each part of the project.

BELMONT — Two sixth-graders at Genesee Valley Central School were on a mission. Tristan Metatos and Whitney Young, along with other members of the Elementary Student Council, were charged by their advisor, Cynthia Emrich, to come up with a creative idea for their first service project. Tristan and Whitney presented a proposal based on their discovery that socks and undergarments are the least donated clothing items — and the most needed — by clothing shelters. Thus, the Genesee Valley Elementary Student Council’s Sock Drive was born.

“I originally thought that maybe we’d get 200 pairs of socks,” Emrich said. “But it exploded beyond my wildest dreams. After just the second week we were already up to 641 pairs.” The Sock Drive turned into a friendly competition between grades Pre-K3 through sixth with the winning grade to receive special recognition and a “sweet treat.” Running from Jan. 13 to Feb. 13, the sock drive concluded with a presentation at the annual Elementary School Valentine’s Dance on Thursday. At the dance, fifth grader Addison Bradt and sixth grader Whitney Young, co-presi-

dents of the Elementary Student Council, announced the final total of 1,257 pairs of socks. All 10 student council representatives shared in announcing the winning class who donated the most, third grade with 294 pairs. “We wanted to help the homeless and needy to be warmer during these cold winter months,” said Addison. “I am thankful to be part of GV’s student council because I want to make a difference.” “The Sock Drive is one small way that we can change the world for the better,” agreed sixth grader Logan Rice. The socks will be donated to Wellspring Ministries; Healing

Waters youth center; Genesee Valley’s nurse’s office; and other local organizations and individual families.

Wellsville men facing multiple felony charges for vandalism

WELLSVILLE — Wellsville Police Department has reported that an investigation into the recent vandalism in the village has ended with the arrests of two Wellsville men. Police reported that the incidents caused damage to numerous street signs, guard rails, vehicles and trafﬁc signal box’s throughout

the village, and led to the arrest Feb. 12 of Gavin M. Outman, 19, of Wellsville. He was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, a class E felony; making graffiti and fifth-degree conspiracy, both class A misdemeanors; and possession of graffiti instruments, a class B misdemeanor. On Feb. 13, Wells-

ville Police reported that Outman was additionally charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief, a class A misdemeanor. Also arrested Feb. 13 was Eric A. Roulo, 18, of Wellsville, who was charged with with two counts of thirddegree criminal mischief, a class E felony; fourth-degree criminal

mischief, a class A misdemeanor; making graffiti and fifth-degree conspiracy, both class A misdemeanors; and possession of graffiti instruments, a class B misdemeanor. Outman and Roulo were each released with an appearance ticket and are due to appear in Wellsville Village Court Feb. 25 on all charges.

should one break, it may not cause as much of an issue as if a serpentine belt were to falter. • Timing belt: Advance Auto Parts says that most cars have interference engines in which the clearance between moving parts is so small that they can end up bumping into each other if they’re not running on the same timing as one another. That is where the timing

belt comes into play. It connects the crankshaft to the camshaft, helping them stay in sync. Failing to pay attention to a timing belt can result in an expensive engine repair. Belts have ﬁnite service lives, and heat and wear and tear are usually their nemeses. It is important to look for fraying or cracking of belts. Even belts that look new may have worn out grooves that lose their grips on matching pulley grooves. Mechanics often use special gauges to check belts. Belts also may need to be replaced due to oil or grease contamination that can damage the rubber or synthetic rubber. It is important to check the owner’s manual and seek advice from a qualiﬁed mechanic about when belts should be serviced.

Young girl and teacher team up to help ‘Goin’ Bald for Bucks’ at Cuba-Rushford

By KATE DAY SAGER CUBA — At the age of 7, Lauren Smith has never had her hair cut, but decided to join other Cuba-Rushford Central School District students and staff who will have their locks cut March 6 to beneﬁt the ﬁfth-annual “Goin’ Bald for Bucks” fundraiser. Smith, who had been a student in Erica Quattrone’s class for children with special needs, decided to donate her hair in honor of several family members who have fought cancer. The event, slated to be held at 1:45 p.m. in the elementary school gymnasium, will provide funds for “cuttingedge cancer research and compassionate, innovative patient-care programs at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo.” Team leadership teacher Dave Volz said that over the last four years, the school event has collected $27,877. “With the $6,343 (collected) so far this year, we have raised over $44,000 and counting,” Volz said. Quattrone, who also plans to have at least 8 inches of her hair cut alongside Lauren and other teachers, said her personal goal is to raise $2,000. She noted a number of people also plan to shave their heads. “I’m already at almost $1,600,” she said. “Everybody chose a purpose or a person that they are doing this for … mine is for a

Smith, said she had reached out to Quattrone after she saw her daughter’s former teacher’s online posting of the event. “I contacted Erica to see if she would accept Lauren as a running mate,” Smith shared. “Erica responded, ‘That’s a wonderful idea, yes,’ so Mrs. Q started the process.” Smith said she also ﬁgured the fundraiser would be a way to convince her daughter to cut her hair, as she has only had it trimmed over the years. “Lauren was acceptive (of the plan) at that point, but
