The awards are presented to individuals, businesses or organizations that have undertaken outstanding efforts that give new meaning to “DO 6” by supporting and implementing sustainable tourism development along the PA Route 6 Heritage Corridor. The award winners exemplify the mission of the PA Route 6 Alliance to protect, preserve and promote the scenic, cultural, historical and recreational resources in the northern tier.

Purchasing a new car can be an exciting endeavor. Cars and trucks are among the most expensive items a person will buy over the course of his or her lifetime, and no one wants to spend more than necessary. Getting a good deal on a car or truck may come down to researching rebates and incentives. The online automotive resource Edmunds. com says incentives and rebates are used by automakers to spur sales of particularly slow-selling models. Incentives and rebates also are used to entice previous customers to stay loyal to a brand. Potential buyers who are aware of incentives and rebates are being offered can use that knowledge to negotiate lower prices on desired vehicles. Here is a close look at some of the incentives that may be available. • Dealer incentives: Dealer incentives are factory-to-dealer offers that reduce the true cost to buy a vehicle from the factory, according to Cars.com. Dealers are
under no obligation to pass on these cost-cutting measure to customers, but many do just to move stock. • Cash-back rebate: This well-known incentive is based on manufacturers offering cash rebates directly to customers when they make a purchase before a given date. Cash-back rebates are generally offered on models that may not be selling as well as manufacturers had hoped. Some rebates are rolled over from month to month until desired quotas have been met. Think of a rebate as a coupon of sorts applied to the cost of the vehicle. • Low APR financing: With this incentive, dealerships offer low interest rates on vehicles financed through their preferred lenders. Rates may range from 0 to 5 percent. Keep in mind that buyers’ credit scores need to be fairly high to qualify, and the low APR may only be on certain models. • Lease specials: Customers who lease may find manufacturers often offer special lease pro-
grams through captive financing companies. These are subsidized leases based on a residual value that’s much higher than the actual worth of the vehicle at term’s end. Dealers are playing with the numbers to bring down the monthly payment and thereby make their vehicles seem more appealing. RealCarTips says that sometimes dealerships will apply cash-back rebates or financing incentives towards a lease instead of a financed vehicle. • Bonus cash incentive: This type of incentive generally targets a specific demographic,
such as recent college graduates or military personnel. These incentives are not widely advertised, so it may be necessary to inquire about what is being offered. • Government rebates: Some savings are realized not through the manufacturer or dealer, but from government rebate programs. For example, tax credits may be available to buyers who purchase cars that run on alternative fuels or hybrids. There are many ways for savvy consumers to save money when buying new vehicles.

New ban on smoking near playgrounds announced for area state parks
ByJoEllen Wankel No smoking signs, long-standing as part of the atmosphere at many playgrounds in public parks and near schools, will soon be joining other signage located in state parks, as it was announced Friday that a ban on all forms of tobacco, vaping, and e-cigarettes at playgrounds in all state parks is set to go into effect by Memorial Day 2020. State parks impacted by the move in McKean, Cameron, Elk and Potter counties include: Bendigo, Hyner Run, Kettle Creek, Ole Bull, Sinnemahoning and Sizerville state parks. The state park playground ban eliminates children’s exposure to secondhand smoke at 135 locations in the state’s 121 parks. Notification signs will be installed by Memorial Day, May 25. Bendigo State Park is 100 acres in Jones Township in Elk County, 20 of which are developed and feature the playground and a picnic area. The park is a great place to visit and enjoy a historical talk or hands-on activity for environmental education. Ole Bull State Park consists of 132 acres in the Kettle Creek Valley, Potter County. Visit for children’s programs or evening campfires during the summer months. Sinnemahoning State Park is more than 1,900 acres between Elk State Forest and Susquehannock State Forest. Fishing and water recreation are a big draw for visitors, courtesy of the 145-acre reservoir created by Stevenson Dam, while visitors who enjoy wildlife observation could have the chance to see bald eagles, coyote, bobcat and the elk of the region. The park also hosts many holidays and seasonal celebrations. Sizerville State Park is 386 acres surrounded by Elk State Forest, located six miles north of Emporium. Visitors can enjoy activities, programs and teacher workshops as well as the annual autumn festival. Pennsylvania Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn and Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine announced the ban Friday, explaining that as part of the Pennsylvania
Department of Health’s “Young Lungs at Play” program, all forms of tobacco, vaping, and e-cigarettes no longer will be permitted within 30 feet of state park playground facilities. “Directly in line with our parks’ mission of promoting healthy lifestyles, their playgrounds join the growing number of county, borough and township park facilities that embrace the ‘Young Lungs at Play’ program and now forbid tobacco use,” Dunn said via media release. “Our children should be guaranteed the right to play in clean air and healthy
areas that are free of secondhand smoke.” The United States Surgeon General estimates secondhand smoke exposure contributes to approximately 41,000 deaths among non-smoking adults, and 400 deaths in infants each year. Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at an increased risk for respiratory infections, middle ear disease, severe asthma and slowed lung growth. “We are proud to work with DCNR on this effort to reduce the exposure to secondhand smoke for children,”

A Civil War Era hotel that was across the street from the store was connected in 1910 to the original General Store building and became the Feed and Farm supplies Area. Bags were originally 100# and were shipped by rail from Buffalo, New York. In the 1930’s and 1940’s, some groceries were still shipped to the store by rail. Items popular at the time were canned milk, coffee, tea, and bags of flour, salt, and sugar. At the beginning of the 21st century, the railroad was popular again with the filming of UNSTOPPABLE. Often rumored was we were offered five million dollars to have the store “blown up” for a scene in the movie.
