2021 SPRING PASTURE MANAGEMENT CLASSES

Join Livestock and Field Crops Specialists, Amy Barkley and Josh Putman, for webinars focused on preparing for a productive 2021 grazing season.

SOUTHWEST, NY- – Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Southwest New York Dairy, Livestock, and Field Crops Program (SWNYDLFC) will be offering virtual training opportunities on pasture management topics including weed identification and management, frost seeding, pasture design, and rotational grazing. Classes will be held on 4 consecutive Thursday evenings starting on February 25th. All classes will begin at 6:30 pm ET and run for one hour, with the exception of “Early Season Weed Management” which will run for an hour and a half. There is a registration fee per class. “Early Season Pasture Weed Management” will provide 1.5 DEC Credits in Categories 1a, 10, and 21. To receive credits, participants will need to have their pesticide license available to show the instructors and be present for the entirety of the live class.

Gowanda Sports Report By Bill Peglowski It was quite an interesting week in Gowanda high school sports. There were three competitions involving Gowanda students: a virtual swim meet plus season opening home and away bowling matches. The Eden-Gowanda boys swimming team opened the week on Feb. 1 with a virtual swim meet against Depew. While no final score or official win/lose report on the meet has been made, the results and scoring for the individual events have been posted. Adding up those points shows a total of 94 for Eden-Gowanda and 66 for Depew. Eden-Gowanda swimmers took all but four events. Earning 1st place finishes for Depew were Nick Karnyski (100Y Freestyle) and Benjamin Wypij (100Y Breaststroke) along with

the Depew 200Y Freestyle and 400Y Freestyle Relay teams.The Eden-Gowanda boys swept the 500Y Freestyle with Cody Gemza, Hayden Kaus and Logan Gemza finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Cody Gemza also won the 200Y Freestyle event [2:19.53]. Christian Merrill took 1st place in two events: the 200Y Individual Medley [2:38.81] and the 100Y Backstroke [1:15.24]. Additional 1st place finishes for Eden-Gowanda were: Austin Timblin (50Y Freestyle) [25.11] and Paul Winiecki (100Y Butterfly) [1:14.90]. The Gowanda boys and girls Bowling teams both opened their season at home hosting Ellicottville on Feb. 3 and both teams came away with 4-0 wins. Leading the way for the Gowanda boys was Cameron Wight with a 224 high game and 588 series. Johnny Smuda was right

behind with a 586 series and a 178 high game. For the Gowanda girls, Paige Szalay had a 154 high game and 428 series to head up the Lady Panthers’ effort. Sierra Twoguns contributed a 414 series and a personal best high game of 191.The Gowanda teams headed to also unbeaten Hinsdale on Feb. 5 with both the boys and the girls teams suffering a 4-0 loss. For the boys, Daniel Marrocco had a personal best high game of 237 on the way to a 572 series for the Panthers. Drew Shull had a 487 series and a 160 high game. Just one pin behind, David Goodemote rolled a 187 high game into a 486 series. The Gowanda girls faced Hinsdale without Paige Szalay, their top bowler from the opener. • The student must complete the application, which includes writing an essay addressing an issue facing agriculture in their county, and how Farm Bureau may support its members in addressing it. • Return the completed application packet by mail to pdugan@nyfb. org or mail to New York Farm Bureau, in Albany, with a postmark no later than March 1, 2021. Scoring will determine both county and district winners and may include

a personal interview. Each district winner will receive $100 and then compete for one of three state scholarships, worth $1,500, $1,200 and $1,000, based on their submitted applications.
