Happy Valentine's Day! How did “XO” come to symbolize kisses and hugs?
As Valentine’s Day approaches, the pressure is on to find ideal gifts for a special sweetheart. The National Retail Federation indicates shoppers spent around $19.6 billion on Valentine’s Day gifts in 2018, a dramatic increase from the year prior. When gifting the men in their lives, others may be hard pressed to find an ideal gift for the guy who seems to have it all. Even though a small study published in Psychology Today determined that gifting men is seemingly easier than gifting women — regardless of who is doing the buying — there’s a prevailing stereotype that men are hard to buy for. That said, these suggestions for men’s gifts may get the creative gifting juices flowing. • Leather gloves: Leaving home when the weather is frightful can be a challenge. But warm, stylish gloves may help the process along. Look for gloves that also have touchscreen compatible tips, so that he doesn’t
have to remove the gloves to send that “I (heart) you” text. • Pixel heart mug: This heat-changing mug is ideal for gamers who realize you need full health, or hearts, to make it through game play — or the workday. The heart illustration turns red when it’s filled with a hot beverage. This mug is available from Kikkerland on Amazon. • Luxury shave kit: More men are realizing that indulging in quality grooming items does not require checking manliness at the door. In fact, it is quite trendy for men to use products entirely geared toward their skin and hair types, with more masculine scents to boot. • Portable record player: If he’s a music buff and has collected vintage albums through the years, give him a modern way to play them. A wireless, Bluetooth-enabled turntable can be a heartfelt and practical gift. • Whiskey-inspired gifts: From whiskey
barrel-faced watches to jumbo ice wedges to chill without watering drinks down, whiskey gifts are definitely trending upward. Of course, a good bottle of single-malt is certainly a winning go-to gift as well. • Ticket stub organizer: Whether he’s a sports fan, a concert-goer, or collects stubs to other events and outings, provide an organized way to preserve those memories. • Wireless phone charger: Tame that cord clutter with a gizmo that can quickly charge his phone and have him ready to take your calls or receive your texts. • Noise-cancelling headphones: Remove ambient sounds from his day, especially when commuting, traveling or working in his cubicle. • Stub Hub gift card: Gift him with the perfect way to catch up on live games. Gifting guys is a little easier with some Valentine’s inspiration.

first time that including the letter “X” at the end of a letter took on the meaning so many people give it now. As for “O” symbolizing hugs, even less is known about how that came about. The late American writer Leo Rosten, whose writings included 1968’s “The Joys of Yiddish,” suggested that including “O” at the end of a letter might have a similar origin story to “X.” Rosten theorized that “O” was used by Jewish immigrants who did not want to sign a document with “X,” which they, like the people in the Middle Ages, interpreted as symbolic of the Christian cross. Exactly when “O” was paired with “X” and came to symbolize hugs is unknown, though various historians suggest the two were not paired until the latter half of the 20th century.

were essentially stating the contents of the document were true in the name of Jesus Christ. While Jesus Christ’s teachings are rooted in showing compassion for one’s fellow man, signing a letter with “X” did not symbolize love in the Middle Ages. In fact, that development did not come about until much later. The Oxford English Dictionary attributes the first use of “X” to symbolize love and/or kisses in a letter to English naturalist Gilbert White. However, some historians debate the accuracy of that attribution, saying White’s use of the letter “X” in his letter was likely meant to convey blessings on the letter’s recipient. Researcher Stephen Goranson found many uses of the letter “X” to convey love and/or kisses in or after the 1880s, so it’s very likely that this was the

Love letters are a great way for couples to express their affection and devotion to each other. The sentiments expressed in love letters are as unique as the couples who write them. However, love letters often contain one particular turn of phrase regardless of their authors. When signing a love letter, it’s customary for writers to include at least one “XO” near their names. “XO” is widely recognized as symbolic of wishing “hugs and kisses” to a letter’s intended recipient. This tradition is such an ingrained part of romantic letter writing that few may stop to pause and wonder just how the letters “XO” came to symbolize hugs and kisses. The origins of “XO” are not definitively known, though many historians note that signing letters with “X” dates back to the Middle Ages. Few people could read and write in the Middle Ages, but signing “X” did not require either of those abilities. Christianity played a big part in many people’s lives during the Middle Ages, and “X” was seen as a representation of the Christian cross. So when people signed “X” on legal documents, they

Can You Pay Taxes With a Credit Card? If you owe back taxes to the federal government, you hopefully know the IRS offers options when it comes to paying them. There are many things taxpayers don’t know about paying taxes — including the fact that you can pay taxes with a credit card. Read on to learn more now… You might wonder, “Can I pay taxes with a credit card?” You can, but there are many factors to consider before you pay taxes with a credit card, not the least of which is the cost. How it works The IRS doesn’t directly accept payments from credit cards, rather it authorizes several different independent companies to accept these payment on its behalf. You can find a complete list of these companies on the IRS website. You can use credit or debit cards to make an income tax payment if they’re issued by: Visa American Express Discover MasterCard Although credit card payment surcharges are illegal in some states, the federal government is itself exempt from this particular law. The companies that accept payments charge credit card fees of between 1.87% and

2.35% of the amount paid, which is added on to the charge. So a person paying a $5,000 tax bill will incur a minimum of $93.50 in credit card fees. When paying taxes with a credit card makes sense, and when it doesn’t… Despite the high cost of paying these credit card fees, there are several different scenarios in which it may be a good idea to pay your taxes with a credit card. First, there are some credit cards that offer rewards worth more than the fees. For example, there are cards that offer 2% cash back, or travel statement credits worth 2% of the amount spent. So if a taxpayer uses one of these credit cards, and avoids interest by paying his or her statement balance in full, then it is possible to enjoy the convenience of paying by credit card while
coming out just slightly ahead. In addition, there are ways that credit card users might receive some interest-free financing of their tax debt. For example, almost all credit cards have a grace period that lasts between 21 and 25 days after the statement closes. So if a charge is made on April 15, and the card’s statement period closes on May 10 and has a 25 day grace period, then the payment could be due as late as June 4. Also, there are some credit cards that offer interest-free promotional financing on new purchases for at least six months after the account is opened, or as long as 18 months. By putting some or all of the tax payment on an eligible account, taxpayers can further extend payment while avoiding interest

charges. But if taxpayers are trying to finance their tax liability using a credit card’s standard interest rate, then they will likely be paying more than if they used the IRS’s own installment program. This program requires the payment of a onetime fee and currently charges approximately 3.4% annually, a much lower rate than most credit cards offer. By considering the advantages and disadvantages of paying taxes with a credit card, taxpayers can make the best decisions for their individual needs.
